1 St Ursula s Weekly Issue 182 Friday 9th October 2015 Message from the Head Teacher Charity directs everything to the honour of God and the good of souls St Angela Merici (c.f 2nd counsel /6) Parents Forum On Wednesday 14th October at 2.00 pm we are holding our regular Parents Forum meeting. All parents are welcome and it would be lovely to see as many parents as possible. For the benefit of parents new to the school, this is an opportunity to explore together ways in which the school can be made better. Outdoor Uniform The weather is now turning colder and the girls will need to wear outdoor coats over their uniform. I would like to remind parents that coats should be plain navy/black. Denim/leather jackets, track suit tops, fleeces/hoodies, body warmers/gillets are unacceptable. Whole School Attendance = 97.38% Congratulations to LIGOURI, MAJELLA and NEUMANN for a top weekly attendance of 100% Well done girls. 3 STUDENT NEWS / ACHIEVEMENT STEM CLUB - 08/10/15 Today in STEM club, we built a motor, like you d use to power an elevator, a car, or a small portable life raft you d use to escape from the island your fellow pirates have marooned you on. We lashed pencils together with string, furiously fused wires and elastic bands, and crafted beautifully artisanal cotton reel devices, all in the hope of the brilliant whirr of a motor- like the kind you d install in a Porsche, possibly to escape the pirates who heard you escaped from the island they marooned you on. But the whirr never came. None of our motors worked- and when we tried to look for error, like good scientists should, we couldn t decide. Some said that we d tied the pencils too tightly and our motor wouldn t spin. Others said that we d looped the rubber bands badly, and could improve that to make the energy transfer easier. At least one person said that they heard the distinctive noise of a peg leg, and the cawing of a parrot prior to the experiment, and that sabotage was afoot. FORTHCOMING EVENTS Parent Forum Wednesday 14th October: 2.00 pm Charities Day Friday 23rd October Year 11 Parents Evening Wednesday 11th November Year 10 Academic Reviews Tuesday 24 th November We ll keep investigating to make our experiments more accurate and efficient, but maybe most importantly- we had fun doing it.
4 STUDENT NEWS / ACHIEVEMENT FOOTBALL RESULTS 2nd win in a week for U16 s 07/10/15 John Roan 0-10 St U s U16 s The U16 Football team went to John Roan missing 3 players but won comfortably against an improving Roan side. The joint players of the game centre backs Nnebesi and Lisa dominated the speedy Roan strikers and were ably assisted by assured full back performances from Katie Byrne, Amy and Jayde. The teams passing was very impressive and the first goal illustrated that, a quick break down the right saw Toyosi s shot saved but the rebound fell to Orlagh who made no mistake. Then Julia played a clever disguised ball for Toyosi who finished neatly, before Lisa brilliantly cut out an attack then swept the ball to Toyosi who flicked it on for Orlagh s second. Captain Tatiana, who seemed to be everywhere at times then, got in on the act scoring a brilliant solo goal. Roan seemed overwhelmed as Toyosi got her second goal and Lauren fired in a fantastic curling effort then finished in the corner to make it 7-0 at half time. To their credit Roan reorganised and gave as good as they got in the second half with Regina pulling off two excellent saves to keep her clean sheet. Jessie drove in a low shot for number 8 before a well worked move involving Jayde and Orlagh was finished with a pin point chip by Jessie again. Unfortunately Tatiana picked up an injury but there was still time for Julia to make it 10 clipping in a shot with the outside of her boot. An excellent performance by St U s then but as Roan improve they will give us much tougher tests in future. Team and goals () Toyosi (2), Nnebesi, Lisa, Amy, Katie Byrne, Orlagh (2), Tatiana (c) (1), Lauren (2), Jessie (2), Julia (1), Jayde, Regina Players of the match-lisa/nnebesi
