2 Photo by Georg Höfer Dear Friends The final whistle of the World Cup is still ringing in our ears, while all the excitement of the world is already overpowered by less joyful events: natural disasters in Russia, China and Pakistan. The public interest in South Africa is ebbing away as quickly as it arose. We, however, think back to the intense time of the World Cup with pleasure and butterflies in our stomachs. It was truly impressive to see how the simple language of football can unite a nation separated by apartheid, racial tensions, and poverty. Even though there were lots of critics voicing their concerns surrounding the role of FIFA and the mammoth public investments burdening South Africa, the event proved to be very helpful in raising global awareness about the problems of this fascinating continent. As an added bonus we also received a fair share of that focus. The media covered our work with more interest and detail than ever before, allowing us to spread our message to a greater audience. As a result of all the media hype, we received important donations that helped us stabilise this young initiative. We are confidently looking into the future and are determined to stay on track. At the same time, we hope that we can count on your continued support so we can proceed with our educational work even after the euphoria of the World Cup has passed. 3 Internally After the successful startup phase of KuLutsha the time has come to move towards the next step of the project. KuLutsha is becoming In order to create a homogeneous organisation and to minimise the administrative costs, the non-profit organisation e.v. (Education & Football) was formed in Germany. The goal of the organisation is to serve as a parent organisation for the KuLutsha project in South Africa, as well as other future projects. KuLutsha will from now be known solely as a project under the umbrella of the organization. We were able to recruit Philipp Jäckel from the Allianz Versicherungs AG (insurance company) as our chairman of the board, and tax accountant Robert Fischer as his representative. The management of the organisation continues to be carried out by Florian Zech and Jakob Schlichtig. We now face the challenge of communicating this change to the existing network of. 2010: Year of important progress The restructuring of the organisation is running smoothly so far and marks an important step towards the internationalisation and expansion of the concept to additional locations. Due to the frenzy surrounding the World Cup, 2010 is the year for. It is unlikely that there will be a similar interest for African football projects in the foreseeable future, as the public s attention will slowly shift towards Brazil and the 2014 World Cup. For, this means: Seize the moment! If the progress that occurred during the first quarter of this year is any indicator, is looking forward to a promising future. In addition to the formation of the German non-profit organisation, the registration of the organisation in South Africa has also been a success and marks a significant step towards a more stable structure for the organisation. Furthermore, the release of the newly developed homepage and corporate design is looming on the horizon. The new logo displayed in these news is part of that change. In addition new and exciting partnerships were formed and we are in the process of developing our already very successful programmes in the field of youth education. 4 Internally The generous donations received during the World Cup put wind in the sails of our programmes and enabled us to increase the number of our football leagues to 8; with over 120 teams playing more than 1000 matches and thousands of children participating in weekly life skill sessions all with the goal of improving crucial social competencies. 8 Leagues more than 120 teams over 1000 matches In addition, we are very glad that we were able to strengthen and further extend the long-standing partnership with the American-based CTC Ten Foundation, with whom we initiated the Chris Campbell Memorial Football Field. After intensive talks we are happy to announce that will from now on be responsible for managing all programmes and events that happen on this exceptional field. This field provides us with a unique platform to develop and improve our programmes. The lessons learned on a small scale at the Chris Campbell Memorial Field can then be applied on a larger scale to influence all other activities of. The local township children are the ones to directly profit from the field, but in the long term all children and youth who attend the football leagues and life skill programmes will also benefit from the new arrangements. 5 Activities The middle of April marked the beginning of the football leagues, the Youth Leadership Programme and the Life Skill Programme GoalGetter. The opening whistle for the World Cup Season 2010 had been blown! April: Opening whistle for the World Cup Season 2010! This year, more than 40 teams from 33 various orphanages, drug rehabilitation centres and juvenile detention centres are taking part in the football leagues for both boys and girls. Additionally, similar football programmes are carried out at the Chris Campbell Memorial artificial turf facility in the Khayelitsha Township. The field programmes are open for all children and youth from the surrounding area and on most afternoons you will find the field crowded with children. One of the major challenges in the programming at the Chris Campbell Field is the management of the weekend night league. The league is intended to draw youths and young adults, away from bars and illegal activities in order to prevent violence, alcoholism and crime. It is primarily organised by members of the Site B community, who are supported by the management. 24-Hour Event: More than 5000 football fanatics The annual 24-hour football event, 24, was a huge success for all participants and staff members involved. The Chris Campbell Memorial Field hosted more than 1400 excited children and youth who took part in the non-stop tournaments and various life skill activities. They were supported and cheered on by countless spectators for the duration of the day, through the night and right on until the next morning. The event enjoyed popularity with local representatives in politics, media and sport, and as a result was able to bring some much-needed attention to the work of the organization in the community. 6 The World Cup in retrospect Even though the 2010 Football World Cup is already fading from most people s memories, we would like to look back once more at the event which turned out to be a crucially important one and not only just for our organisation. Cup 2010 more than 2000 thrilled children! Even though there was a lot of skepticism towards South Africa s capacity to host the World Cup, the country and its people managed to impress the world. Aside from that, it was also a very delightful and successful time for. With our Ikamvalethu Cup (English translation: Our Future Cup) we were able to reach out to more than 2000 children and youths from the greater Cape Town area and engage them in our educational football activities. The Ikamvalethu Cup lasted for a period of four weeks and consisted of daily football games for children of all age groups. In addition to the football each game also involved an integrated educational component for the kids. Countless teams of young boys and girls took part in the tournament and as a result learned several interesting facts about the 32 countries competing in the World Cup. The children accepted the challenges with enthusiasm, curiosity and dedication, and within a short time they had gathered an impressive, detailed knowledge about the respective countries. Sharing this knowledge with others and helping the children escape from their often dismal daily lives were two of the greatest outcomes of this event. That way, not only the champions of the tournament came away as winners, but it was truly a major success for all participants. It showed us yet again that sport is a very valuable tool in giving children access to education, knowledge and social skills. 7 Goal! The Leadership programme is taking a very pleasant turn. The participating boys and girls are constantly making progress and are starting to take over more and more training sessions for the youth teams. Achievements such as a scholarship for university or internships with local businesses give them a motivational boast and confirm that they are on the right way. Youth: Coaching at Street Child World Cup Furthermore, a group of Youth Leaders was allowed to fly to Durban to attend the 10-day Street Child World Cup, where they gathered valuable experiences as coaches of the participating national teams. Nothemba, a member of the Leadership team, had a particularly special experience. Through the help of our partner organisation Coaching for Hope, she and David Beckham handed over England s application documents to host the World Cup 2018 to the head of FIFA, Joseph Blatter, in Zurich. 8 Goal! In addition to the daily football leagues and Life Skill programmes we regularly organise additional events and experiences for the different groups of boys and girls that we work with. Day of Intercultural Exchange At the end of May, we hosted a Day of Intercultural Exchange together with the German International School of Cape Town. Pupils from the German school played football with children and youths from the surrounding townships. Throughout the day they worked on various tasks and problem-solving activities in mixed teams. All groups were highly motivated and throughout the day the children got to know each other, while prejudices, barriers and differences slowly vanished. All around it was obviously a successful event for all participants. Bearing down prejudices: Children at the day of Intercultural Exchange Women s Day: Advancement of Women s Football in Townships On the South African Women s day at the beginning of August, organised a large football tournament for only girls, the IKASI cup. The aim was to advance women s football in the townships all the while bringing focus to the over 40 already involved in our girls educational programmes. Approximately 40 all-female teams shared many happy hours full of joy, competition and fun. Equality: Girl inspiring the spectators Leadership Camp: Learning to take responsibility Another exciting opportunity arose when we were able to send 30 Youth Leaders to a camp just outside of Cape Town. The aim of this 3-day trip was to further emphasize the messages and key lessons the boys had already learned in the weekly Leadership sessions. This was accomplished through intense workshops and training sessions focused on various leadership skills. Sense of responsibility: Youth Leaders engaging in a team building activity
