2 The Green & White Summer 2012 Summer 2012 Issue Number 48 Summer 2012 Volume 16 Number 3 The Throw In When the first issue of The Green and White appeared on bookshelves and in classrooms way back in the last century (well okay, 1996) it was a 16-page booklet in black and white. Today, you re holding a much larger 36-page, full-colour, glossy magazine. Yet, the biggest problem facing the Editorial team of the magazine nowadays is not what to include but what to leave out! Are there busier areas in the known world than the playing fields, handball courts and indoor venues of Limerick city and county? Maybe Tiananmen Square at rush hour might come close but judging by the volume of activity we report on, it s surprising there is a blade of grass left in any GAA field in Limerick! Have a look at the contents of this issue: Mackey Cup, Eithne Neville Shield, INTO Mini Sevens, Indoor hurling and camogie, handball... and then there are the various competitions, leagues and blitzes going on in the City, East,West and South of the county. And did I mention the 66 boys and girls who played for Limerick in the Primary Game in 2012? As usual, we met up with some of the finest adult and young players and put them on the spot. Declan Hannon is a legend already and Anthony Maher of Kerry will surely see plenty of Croke Park action this summer just like the boys and girls playing in the Mini Sevens on All-Ireland Day. The G in GAA stands for Gaelic but it would be a mistake to think that Gaelic games are confined to these shores. We ve tracked down football leagues in Brittany and hurling in Dubai as well as other far-flung spots. Read all about it in on Page 17. And of course, there are puzzles, cartoons and the Prize Crossword. As if that s not enough, why not make use of the broadband in all our schools and check out the blog on Even better, ask your múinteoir to turn on the interactive whiteboard and try the Maths Trail and Quiz (all answers are to be found in this issue). Doing the Crossword as a group activity is also very enjoyable all you need is a dry-wipe marker and the crossword frame projected onto a whiteboard. Go on, give it a go! Our next issue will be out in Autumn Wouldn t it be great to be looking back on a long hot summer culminating in a scramble for All-Ireland tickets to see Limerick in an All-Ireland final! The 2012 GAA congress decided to make the wearing of gumshields mandatory. This rule change takes effect from 2013 for all underage levels up to minor level. For all other levels it will come into effect from The main function of a gumshield is to reduce the impact of a collision so that it is not focused on one tooth. There are two kinds of gumshield available: 1. Mouth Adapted boil and bite Gumshield. These can be purchased in most sports stores 2. A custom made mouthguard made by your dentist. An impression of your mouth is taken by your dentist, not just your teeth but also your jaw bone. The mouthguard is then made in the lab to fit your teeth and jaw bone exactly. Ireland has one of the highest rates of sportsrelated oral injuries in the EU, with one third of all adult dental injuries being sports-related, according to IDA figures. The IDA believes parents and coaches in particular will have a key role to play in ensuring a safer playing experience for young GAA players. Meeting & Greeting! Munster GAA deserves a lot of praise for its latest initiative to improve the customer experience at 2012 Munster Championship matches. Munster Guides dressed in distinctive pink Munster GAA jerseys have been appointed to welcome patrons, direct them to their seats and act as a point of contact for queries. We met some of the happyshiny-guide-people in Semple Stadium before last month s Limerick v Tipperary thriller and they told us they also help out with pre-match entertainment activities, including FREE face painting! Quicker than you could say the words green and white, an arrangement was made for the boys and girls on Limerick s Primary Game teams to be painted up in their county colours. War-paint applied, they were ready to face the (friendly) fire of their Tipperary equivalents and give an exhibition of all that s good about Limerick hurling and camogie. Welcome Rebel Óg! Citing the Green & White Magazine as a big influence, brothers Brian and Paddy Kelly have launched a new GAA Youth Magazine for Cork. It s called Rebel Óg and it s sure to be a big hit with followers of Gaelic games the length and breadth of Ireland s biggest county. Brian and Paddy are primary school teachers (just like the editors of this magazine). The fact that Paddy is a star on the Cork senior football team means that the lads will have the inside track on all the breaking GAA news in the Rebel County. On behalf of all our readers, we send our best wishes to all associated with this exciting new publication. Rebel Óg abú! 3

7 Summer 2012 The Green & White Meet the Limerick Netminders Aaron Murphy Aaron Murphy is an outstanding young hurler. After all, he won a Munster Under 21 medal with Limerick in 2011 and he has earned a call-up to the Limerick senior squad this year. He also stands out from the crowd he s over six feet tall with a shock of blond hair. Aaron has stood out as a wonderful prospect since he learned his hurling in Hospital NS. He was chosen for the South team that won the Mackey Cup in 2004 and made his debut in the Limerick colours that summer in the Primary Game v Cork on a scorching day in the Gaelic Grounds. His teammates included Declan Hannon, Sean O Brien and Niall Kennedy who all featured on last year s successful Under 21 side while Declan and Sean are fellow members of the Limerick senior panel this year. His grandfather, Jack Quaid, won a Munster senior medal in 1955 when a Mick Mackey-trained team shocked Clare in the Munster Final. Several of his uncles played hurling in the Limerick colours while his aunt Noreen Quaid was a camogie player of note. Nicky s late father, Tommy Quaid, was the first choice goalkeeper for Limerick between 1976 and 1993, while his cousin, Joe Quaid, succeeded him in the same position from 1994 until Tommy was a free-scoring forward at club level with his native Feoghanagh and later on with Effin when he went to live in the South Limerick village. He lined out for limerick in the forward line on a number of occasions. Nicky emulated his late Dad as he has played in goal and outfield for Limerick at senior level. 10 The Green & White Summer 2012 Allianz Mackey Cup 2012 City graduate with honours at UL Limerick City made it 3 out of 3 for the season when they added the Mackey Cup to the Sarsfield Cup and Larkin Shield which had been secured in November In what is truly a golden age for Gaelic Games in the City Division, the City slickers amassed the awesome total of 8 goals and 26 points in two games while conceding a miserly 7 points to claim the Mackey Cup and end a five year spell without victory in the prestigious hurling competition. With Paul O Connor, GDA Ger Downes and Limerick hurler Shane O Neill calling the shots, the training sessions during the Easter holidays bore fruit for the well-oiled City machine. The tournament was played on the allweather surface at the University of Limerick in Mediterranean sunshine. 12 The Green & White Summer 2012 Handball Glory for Limerick Schools It s a Long, Long Way from Clare to Here or so the song has it. It s a Long Way to Tipperary, goes another. Well, it s certainly a long way to Cavan. So, why was a group of children, teachers, parents and supporters from Broadford National School seen boarding a bus to Cavan at 6 a.m. one Saturday morning recently? Answer: to take part in the Allianz Cumann na mbunscol Handball Championships in Kingscourt, County Cavan. Now, it is well known that you would have to be up early in the morning to be ahead of Brother James Dormer of Doon CBS. And so it proved on this occasion, for when the Broadford group alighted in Kingscourt, who was there before them but Brother Dormer, in his capacity as Uachtarán of Cumann na mbunscol! What a day it proved to be for Limerick Handball! Declan Leahy and Timmy Brosnan overcame opposition from Mayo and Kilkenny to reach the Under 13 Boys Final. There, Tyrone awaited them. It was the Red Hand lads who carried the day but the Broadford boys did Limerick proud. Katie McCarthy and Cathy Foley were the standard bearers in the Under 13 girls competition and they were simply unstoppable. Armagh and Kildare were accounted for and it was a Galway pair who provided the opposition in the final. This Galway duo had previously carried the day in both Community Games and Féile but the Broadford duo made it third time lucky as they secured an outstanding victory. Eimear Lehane and Breda Magner only discovered on Friday that they would be in action the following day. They went on to claim second place in their competition, a remarkable achievement. Small wonder that bonfires were blazing when the bus pulled in to Broadford on their return to the West Limerick village. A torchlight procession followed as the heroes were feted in their own village. Another outstanding Limerick achievement was the performance of Caitríona Millane of An Mhodh Scoil, O Connell Avenue, Limerick. Caitríona added the All-Ireland U-13 singles title to the Munster title she won earlier this year. 12

17 Summer 2012 The Green & White GAA GOES GLOBAL TThe GAA field in Ratoath in County Meath is always a hive of activity but for one week every year, the air is filled with accents not just from Ratoath and other parts of Meath but also from Norway, Denmark, France and even Lithuania. These voices belong not to newcomers to Ratoath but to pupils from school in these countries who were introduced to hurling by a Norwegian called Oyvind Dahl who now lives in Toulouse in France. It all began in 1995, when Dahl was on holiday in Ireland and watched a hurling game on TV while visiting a pub in Kilkenny. Thus began a love affair that saw him introduce hurling to his pupils in Toulouse when he got a job as a PE teacher in the rugby-mad French city. Not content with that, he sought funding from the European Union for a schools e-twinning project. Oyvind had to fill in a 45 page form but it was worth it! Dahl had responses from Lithuania, Turkey, Romania, Denmark, England and Norway. Dahl took responsibility for coaching the teachers and students. He sent them coaching manuals, links to websites, YouTube clips, along with a 30 - minute coaching DVD which Dahl made himself. There are about 150 skills in hurling but he condensed them into 10 three-minute visual and demonstrative segments, covering basic skills. The next big step was the organisation of a five- team tournament hosted by Ratoath GAA club. Teams from Toulouse, Oslo, Derby in England and Copenhagen took part. Apart from playing matches, there were coaching sessions and a trip to Croke Park for the All-Ireland Club Finals. But, this is no isolated phenomenon. Gaelic Football in Brittany in France is so popular that the province has its own Gaelic Football Championship with local teams of native players. The tournament is run over six rounds hosted on different weekends in four different venues and is growing in popularity. The recent upsurge in emigration from Ireland due to recession has seen Irish people abroad meet up with each other through joining their local GAA club. in Dubai, Australia, France, Lithuania, Belgium and other European centres. GAA clubs have sprung up in Poland and Lithuania, neither country in the words of Micheál Ó Muirceartaigh a hurling stronghold. There are over 40 GAA clubs in the London area alone! Paul O Connor is a founder member of Stockholm Gaels and author of the book A Parish Far from Home. He speaks of the role GAA clubs play in the lives of young Irish emigrants: We provide a place for them to train and to play the games they love. We become their family and friends. Paul also points that that curious local onlookers at hurling and football training often become fascinated and join the club themselves. G&W 17

24 EAST The Green & White Summer 2012 A Memorable Day for Ahane NS in Last Year s Hurling Final By a Special Reporter East Limerick Schools East schools picture parade Ahane NS 3-3 Oola NS 2-1 Ahane NS recorded a fantastic win in the East Schools Hurling (Roinn 3) final over an excellent Oola NS side in a highly entertaining match at the Gaelic Grounds on 13th June, This was a thrilling match in which Ahane took an early lead and dominated the 1st half, thanks to a goal by Ciarán Barry and one goal and two points by Conor Morrissey. Ahane led by 2-2 to 0-0 at half time. Much of the credit for this lead belonged to the Ahane back line of Sean Devitt, Mike Ryan and William Brennan who expertly contained a strong Oola forward line. There were also some very strong displays from Cathal Flannery in goals and forwards, Joe Griffin, Áine Reynolds and Thomas Coughlan, in the 1st half. Things changed in the 2nd half when Oola came out strongly and scored 2-1 without reply. Ahane brought on Eric O Neill in the forwards and soon afterwards Ciarán Barry scored a fine point from the left-hand side of the pitch. Ahane looked very nervous going into the last 5 minutes until a fabulous ball sent across the square by Áine Reynolds was lashed to the net by the incoming Ciaran Barry. This sealed the victory for Ahane NS in what was a thrilling finish to a very sporting and entertaining final. This win allowed Ahane to retain the trophy that they had also won in Victory was due in no small way to teacher/coach, Micheál O Shea who had the team well drilled and organised throughout the competition. Ahane s path to the final included wins over Cappamore and Caherline in the group stages before coming up against Caherconlish in the semi-final, who they just pipped by a solitary point. The Ahane squad included: Gearóid Coffey, Jack O Connell, Mike Ryan, Conor Morrissey, Sean Devitt, William Brennan, Áine Reynolds, Niamh O Curry, Eric O Neill, Ciarán Barry (Capt), Joe Griffin, Cathal Flannery, Thomas Coughlan and Orla Twoomey. Foynes NS girls mini sevens football team Under the watchful eyes of our trainers, Liz Cahill, Gerry Conroy and Ms. Airey, our school indoor camogie team trained very hard every Wednesday evening in preparation for the West Limerick championship. We played 3 matches on March 22nd, beating Croagh NS, Feenagh NS and Shountrade NS and made it to the West final where we met Ardagh NS. We played a great game and won, making it through to the county finals in Caherconlish. In our first game (v Monaleen), we won comfortably. We played Cappamore NS next. This was a much tighter game but our skill and determination ensured we were worthy winners in the end. We had a great day and all our hard work paid off. We would like to thank our trainers and all the supporters who took time off work to support us. The captain for the West final was Sarah O Grady. I was captain for the County final. 28 The Green & White Summer 2012 The Lundon Eye! Notes on Limerick GAA programmes and the matches in question by notable collector of GAA memorabilia, James Lundon 2009 Munster Football Final JAMES LUNDON This was a day I will not easily forget. Undoubtedly, it was our best chance in years to annexe a much coveted Munster Senior Football Championship final victory--and our first since The 54-page programme cost 4. It was slightly bigger than standard size, something that many collectors dislike, as they can be difficult to store. Limerick had eased past both Tipperary and Clare while Cork had beaten Waterford and Kerry (after a replay) to reach the final. The game was played in Páirc Uí Chaoimh as Limerick had home advantage the year before when losing to two very, very late goals in that year s Munster championship. The Auld Enemy were, for once, not being faced in the final and hopes were cautiously optimistic that a positive result could be squeezed out if everything went right. Remember, Cork had been beaten in the 2003 championship in Cork. A very sunny day and a perfect seat at the top of the covered stand was mine. We started brightly and were well in the game at half time. Cork were rattled but a goal had been conceded. The game remained very tight all through the second half but a second Cork goal and Limerick getting no breaks not getting a score from a free or even a scorable one did not help. No matter how hard Limerick tried, the equalising score to bring the game back to Limerick never materialised. A gut-wrenching defeat was worsened as I spent the best part of the next two hours sitting in traffic in my attempts to get out of Cork as quickly as possible via the Jack Lynch tunnel. The next day s papers had a large photo of John Galvin banging the ground in despair at the final whistle. He wasn t the only one. A huge opportunity missed 28

I especially like The Lundon Eye, and seeing the old match programmes again, as I would have attended many of the matches recalled.
