3 Winter 2010 The Green & White News+++News+++News+++ Cutting from the Limerick Leader Recognition for Limerick Football Stars The performances of Limerick footballer John Galvin in this year s Championship were recognised when he was nominated for both the 2010 Vodafone All Stars and the Opel GPA Team of the Year. John has starred in the Limerick engine room for over a decade and has consistently matched and even outshone the country s top midfield performers. John was deemed most unlucky to be omitted from the Vodafone selection. However, justice was seen to be done when Galvin was named on the 2010 GPA Team of the Year. Limerick colleague Stephen Lavin, who is a teacher in Scoil Iósaf in Adare, was also nominated for the GPA selection. The Vodafone All Stars team is chosen by the country s top GAA writers while the GPA team is chosen by a ballot of intercounty footballers. For many players, the latter is more valued because it s all about recognition by one s peers. John Galvin was named at midfield on the 2010 GPA Team of the Year Limerick s Sarah Carey who was nominated for the 2010 Young Camogie Player of the Year award and won the Munster Young Player award Maurice Horan is New Limerick Football Manager Maurice Horan was recently ratified as the new Limerick Senior Football manager taking over from Mickey Ned O Sullivan after five years. A member of the Na Piarsaigh club, the Ballinrobe native was a selector with Mickey Ned in Maurice has represented Mayo at minor, u-21, junior and senior level. He also played senior Gaelic Grounds Hosts Ireland v Australia Match The International Rules match between Ireland and Australia played at the Gaelic Grounds attracted over 30,000 fans to HQ. There was a magnificent atmosphere in the stadium before and after the match although the match itself didn t live up to expectations, probably due to the fact that the Australians adapted to the modified rules better and more quickly than their hosts. The Irish learned from the experience and were in much better shape for the exciting decider football for Limerick in 04. Cork native Ephie Fitzgerald was also ratified as coach/selector. Ephie managed Nemo Rangers to win four county titles in a row as well as two Munster titles. As a player with Nemo Rangers he won four All-Ireland medals and five Munster club medals. He also won two u21 All- Irelands with Cork along with a Munster senior title. played at Croke Park the following week.the organisation of the Limerick leg of the series was a triumph for all concerned and highlighted exactly why Limerick is the perfect choice for European City of Sport It also sends out the message that Limerick s Gaelic Grounds can and should host many more days and nights like this in the future. 3

Played in scorching sunshine, Ballybrown NS had a titanic duel with Crecora National School but emerged winners on the scoreline of Ballybrown NS 2-1: Crecora NS 0-4. Indeed Paul Kennedy of Cumann na mbunscol who presented the trophy to Ballybrown s captain Melissa Kearns, said that it was a shame that any side had to lose. In the semi-final, Ballybrown defeated holders Templeglantine NS by 3-4 to 1-2 while Crecora overcame South champions Ballyagran NS by 1-7 to 2-1 in the other semi-final. G&W 6

8 The Green & White Winter 2010 Memories of by Henry Martin OZ The recent GAA-AFL International Rules series brings back fond memories, as I travelled to Australia for the previous series back in The first game brought me to the Subiaco Oval Stadium in Perth. Inspired by Leighton Glynn, Ireland won a thrilling game by (45) to (44) in front of 35,000 fans. The following Friday night, the second match took place at the MCG Stadium in Melbourne and Ireland, led admirably by Graham Canty and Sean Cavanagh, won the game by (57) to (53) and claimed the series and the Cormac McAnallen Cup I rounded off the trip with a visit to Flemington racecourse for the Melbourne Cup. Of course, the trip wasn t complete without coming in contact with a couple of Limerick GAA ex-pats to find out about the GAA in Australia. Former Limerick Intermediate and underage hurler, Mark Tobin originally of Mungret was the Chairman of Sydney Shamrocks, and Eddie McGrath from Ardpatrick, a star corner forward for the Limerick Senior team in 1982, is a founder member of bitter Sydney rivals Michael Cusacks! 8 G&W

9 A Limerickman in Australia Ahane and Limerick hurler, Niall Moran visited Australia this summer. He compiled this account of his trip Down Under especially for the readers of the G&W Magazine. As I am very interested in the AFL, I decided to go to see Carlton FC and Sydney Swans in action. Former GAA stars Setanta O hailpin and Tadgh Kennelly are on the books of these clubs. To see the levels of fitness, strength, power and skill these players have achieved just shows how far GAA players have to go to match them. However these players are professional!! Melbourne is home of the AFL and ten of the top sixteen teams are based there. I was lucky enough to attend a Carlton training session along with some friends. While there I met up with Setanta O hailpin. Setanta and I played against each other in Munster Minor, U21 and Senior Championship as well as at Colleges level so it was great to see first hand how he was getting on. To witness the sheer intensity of their session on the day before a match was super. Setanta went out of his way to show me the club s facilities which included underwater treadmills for pool recovery sessions, personal pools, fully equipped gym, restaurants as well as 50,000-seater stadium. He told me about meetings before training to inform players of their role in training! Work starts at 8 a.m. and doesn`t finish until 4 p.m. Wednesday is the only day off during the season (so it`s not as easy as some suspect!). Meeting AFL Bronlow medallist Chris Judd and fellow players was a definite highlight. Setanta was injured when I met him but had made quite an impact earlier in the season scoring goals for fun. He was keen to know how all his old hurling team mates and his former opponents were getting on, while he seemed more nervous about Cork s semi final against Kilkenny than his impending match. As it transpired I think Kilkenny were relieved to see Setanta stay in Melbourne for that particular match!! One of the best things about GAA is the people you meet. No matter where you are in the world you`ll always meet a team mate or a former opponent. 10 The Green & White Winter 2010 Scoil Chríost Rí win 2010 Ard Scoil Rís Hurling Academy Cup On a cold Saturday in October, Scoil Chríost Rí won the Ard Scoil Rís Hurling Academy Trophy for the first time in the 4-year history of the tournament. Teams from primary schools in Limerick and Clare took part. Scoil Chríost Rí defeated Adare BNS and Gaelscoil Sáirséal in the group stages but lost to the holders, Patrickswell NS. Scoil Chríost Rí qualified to play Shountrade NS in the semi final. In the second semi-final Patrickswell played St. Nessan s of Mungret. In the final the boys of Chríost Rí met the boys from Mungret. Victory for the Caherdavin boys was particularly pleasing for their mentors Liam Dillon, Mike Cronin and Shane O Neill. Shountrade NS won the Shield final (3rd place play-off) v Patrickswell NS. Organisation of the tournament was overseen by Ard Scoil teachers including Niall Crowe, Niall Moran and Liam Kennedy. The 2010/11 Harty Cup panel was also on hand to help out. 11 Winter 2010 The Green & White Limerick Ladies Crowned 2010 All- Ireland Football Champions! Final Result Limerick 4-10 : Louth 3-08 Limerick came from six points down at half-time to claim the All-Ireland ladies junior football championship crown against Louth at Croke Park. The Shannonsiders, beaten finalists against Antrim last year, came storming back in the second half, having trailed by 1-4 to 3-4 at the break. Tommy Stack s charges completed a remarkable turnaround in the second half, outscoring Louth by 3-6 to 0-4 as the West County Hotel Cup was secured in emphatic style. This success marks a very first All-Ireland Ladies football crown for Limerick in the adult ranks and they will now make the step up to the intermediate grade in Ultimately, it was the scoring prowess of Marie-Claire Curtin and Dympna O Brien that settled an exciting Croke Park decider, as the lethal pair hit 3-10 between them. Curtin finished up with 2-5, including 1-4 in the second half, while sensational full-forward O Brien took her championship tally to with a 1-5 haul. Clodagh Reidy completed the scoring for Limerick, beaten Bord Gáis Energy NFL Division 4 finalists this year, and it was the wing-forward s stunning goal four minutes into the second half which sparked a spirited revival. Limerick captain Sandra Larkin raises the cup. 12 The Green & White Winter 2010 West Limerick girls retain Eithne Neville Cup Eithne Neville Cup The Eithne Neville Cup, donated by one of the iconic figures of Limerick camogie, is back in West Limerick for another year but for long spells, it looked like the famous trophy might be on its way to a new home. Since the competition was inaugurated in 2005, the girls of West Limerick have been in the winners enclosure each year but this time their grip on the Cup was severely threatened by Limerick City in a pulsating semi-final. Played in scorching heat in Bruff GAA Club, the large attendance enjoyed a superb evening s camogie. Speaking after the tournament, Brother James Dormer, Cathaoirleach of Cumann na mbunscol Luimnigh said that the standard of camogie in the 2010 competition was the best yet. Brother Dormer presented the Eithne Neville Cup to West captain Rebecca Noonan amid scenes of great jubilation. Finally, he thanked all the teachers and parents who had helped prepare the teams and paid special tribute to Allianz, sponsors of all Cumann na mbunscol activities. Bruff GAA club is to be complimented on the excellence of the playing surface and their facilities in general. Pat O Dwyer of Bruff was an excellent referee for all 3 matches. The Final West Limerick scored two early points to settle their nerves, the second a free from Katy Scanlon. The East girls looked as if they were finding their feet when West midfielder Aisling Scanlon waltzed through the centre and struck an unstoppable shot to the net. Half-time: West Limerick 1-2: East Limerick 0-0. West Limerick resumed in the second half with deadly intent and Marie Danagher scored two fine goals to put the game out of reach. The West weren t finished and Leanne Nolan s long shot found its way through a forest of sticks for a fourth West goal. The East are noted for their never-say-die spirit and Saoirse Barry raised a green flag but it was too little, too late for her side. Semi Finals 1: West Limerick 1-2: Limerick City 1-1 2: East Limerick 2-2: South Limerick 1-0 Final West Limerick 4-2 East Limerick 1-0 West Limerick celebrate their victory in the Neville Cup in Bruff Limerick City who played in the Neville Cup 2010 at Bruff East Limerick runners up in Neville Cup Brother James Dormer presents thr Neville Cup to West Limerick captain Rebecca Noonan The girls of East Limerick made history as they reached the final of the Neville Cup for the first time ever.

13 Winter 2010 The Green & White JFK Memorial School Limerick Leader Cup Champions JFK Memorial School firmly asserted their place at the top of the Cumann na mbunscol hurling scene when they won the 2010 Limerick Leader Cup. The Limerick Leader Cup, launched in 1931, is one of the most coveted trophies in the primary schools calendar. The competition, which is contested by the 15-a-side hurling champions of each of the four divisions, was revived in 1996 after a lapse of many years. There was great delight among the JFK supporters as it was their first ever victory in the competition. Great credit is due to the backroom staff of Dr Dave Boylan, Mick O Neill and teachers Tim Moloney and Eamon Egan. Scoil Mocheallóg gave their all to reach the final, maintaining a proud hurling tradition in the Balbeck nursery. Their mentors Mike Barron, John Ahern and John English have been in the winners enclosure before and will be back again. The first semi-final saw Scoil Mocheallóg defeat Killinure NS on a scoreline of 2-8 to 1-5. It was a first ever appearance in the Leader Cup for Killinure and Jonathan Dervan s team battled heroically. The Boher school brought an army of followers who cheered their every move. Killinure can hold their heads high after this display. JFK reached the final by virtue of a 2-6 to 0-3 victory over West Limerick standard-bearers Courtenay BNS. The Newcastle West lads are County Football champions but their hopes of a double were dashed despite fighting tigerishly to the very end. 14 The Green & White Winter 2010 Programme Recovery! Introducing James Lundon, GAA Referee and Programme Collector James Lundon Programme Collector Thurles is the location most beloved of hurling supporters. Nowhere compares to the sacred sod of Semple Stadium. Croke Park is where football legends carve their name in history but Mealy s of Castlecomer in Co. Kilkenny is Mecca to another select group of GAA followers- the collectors. Each July, collectors of GAA memorabilia-programmes, medals, books etc gather in the auction rooms to bid for rare, even unique items. It s there you will find James Lundon, a Cappamore native who now resides in Galway. James is known to our readers as the referee of the 2010 Mackey Cup tournament. Among his collection, James has programmes for almost all Limerick Senior Hurling Championship matches going back to 1947! I also have a full Limerick Senior Football Championship collection going back to 1989, says James. All-Ireland medals from the past are much sought after as are rare books. The Celtic Tiger saw these items soar in value. At the 2010 auction, a programme for the 1937 All-Ireland hurling final was sold for 1800 while other rare programmes were sold for sums in the region of 500. Many of our readers come from families steeped in Gaelic Games. Have a look in the attic or that old suitcase under the bed. It may be worth a fortune! We will feature other programmes from James extensive collection in future issues of The G&W Magazine Front cover of 1956 Munster Hurling final programme for the match between Limerick & Clare The teams as they lined out in the 1956 Munster SH final 14

15 Winter 2010 The Green & White 1973 All-Ireland Hurling Final By James Lundon What a day it was for Limerick a green-letter afternoon of sorts for the county s hurlers! The programme is the standard bright yellow covered production of the time and cost ten new 73 pence (two old shillings!). It contained 36 pages. It is hard to find in perfect condition because of the weather conditions on the day; the rain poured out of the heavens all through but it was a perfect ending for the Shanonsiders. The thirty-three year famine was over. Michéal O Hehir s TV commentary was very evocative that day as is recounted in the foreword of Henry Martin s recent book, UNLIMITED HEARTBREAK. That video has been replayed on a number of occasions on TG4 since but never the presentation of Liam to Eamon Grimes. A shame. Mossy Dowling s push-over goal; Richie Bennis ten points; Eamonn Cregan hurling all before him at centre back; Seamus Horgan s crucial save; Tom Ryan s cameo; all life was there and for once Limerick were victorious. Thirty-seven years and counting since! 1973 All Ireland final programme The team sheets for the 1973 final as printed in the match day programme. Look who was no. 7 for Kilkenny! 19 Summer Winter 2010 The Green & White Donal O Grady Limerick s new Hurling Supremo Donal O Grady is a name familiar to Limerick hurling fans for the best part of a decade. The Granagh- Ballingarry clubman, known as Dodge to supporters throughout Limerick, has been a stalwart at midfield since making his name on the county Under 21 team. However, it is Corkman Donal O Grady who has been unveiled as manager of the Limerick hurling team. The Cork Donal is well known to many of our readers as a panelist on The Sunday Game and as an analaisí on GAA Beo on TG4. Donal was a star defender on Cork hurling teams of the early 1980 s, captaining the rebels to National League victory and playing in two All-Ireland hurling finals, losing to Kilkenny in 1983 before winning the Centenary All Ireland final in Semple Stadium in Two years later, Donal was a selector as Cork won the 1986 hurling title. In 2002, Donal took on the job of coaching Cork when the Rebels fortunes were at a low ebb. The players had been involved in a strike following a dispute with the Cork County Board. The post was seen as a poisoned chalice but the following year, Cork were back in the All-Ireland final although there was no fairy tale ending as Kilkenny once again emerged victorious. Twelve months later, Cork avenged this defeat when they toppled the Cats to bring the McCarthy Cup back to Leeside. Donal resigned as coach shortly afterwards, happy that he had achieved his goal and restored pride in Cork hurling. The parallels with Limerick are unavoidable and with Ciarán Carey, TI Ryan and Pat Heffernan in the dugout with him, let s hope there are brighter days ahead for Limerick hurling. G&W Seán Óg Ó hailpin on Donal O Grady and Limerick a few quotes from Seán Óg s internet column Limerick have the best in the business with O Grady. Donal O Grady is the best manager I ve ever played under, so Limerick have the man to turn their fortunes around. The Limerick situation is similar to us at the end of 2002 in that they re coming off a strike. If there s anyone out there to go into that situation and turn it around, Donal O Grady s the man. He ll be going in there neutral. He won t be taking sides, never does. He ll assess players on their merits. He s a players man, but on condition that you do the work for him. If you do, he d die for you. But if you bluff him, the show s over. Tactically and technically, he s the best of them all. I ve never seen anybody to touch him The Limerick lads better get used to looking at the back of a Cornflakes box. Donal always has his training schedule written out on the back of one, so we spent about two years looking at the back of a Cornflakes box. But seriously, those two years might have been the hardest training I ever did, but they were also the most enjoyable. (Regarding Limerick) There s no doubt they ll be competitive next year. No-one will be getting things easy against them with O Grady at the helm. 19

The Underdogs team was made up of a selection of players from City schools who trained for two months as the Mackey Cup Development Squad. Many of the Underdogs came from schools playing in the City B and C Cumann na mbunscol hurling leagues. For JFK, this match was the final fixture in a gruelling 7-day period which saw them win the Olo Cup final (after extra time) and the Limerick Leader Cup final. The Underdogs raced into an early lead thanks to some outstanding finishing by Ian Coates. At half time they led by 2-4 to no score. The second half was a much closer affair and JFK got themselves right back into the game with four well-taken scores, one of which was a goal scored by Conor Houlihan, However, when the final whistle sounded the scoreboard showed that the Underdogs had won by 3-9 to 1-3. Deputy Mayor, Denis McCarthy presented the specially commissioned Mayor s Cup to City captain, Jamie Dillon. Jamie thanked JFK for a tough and sporting match. He also thanked team mentors, Pat Culhane, Ger Downes, Paul O Connor & Ciarán Crowe. Top scorer on the day was Ian Coates from St. Brigid s NS. Other City players to catch the eye were John Flynn, Donal O Conaill, Kevin Gleeson, Shane O Brien, Niall Quane, Simon Garland, Ger Daly and Daniel Enright. 34 The Green & White Winter 2010 Gavin s Havin a Ball! Kilmallock are Limerick senior hurling champions again. Captain, Gavin O Mahoney and star forward, Andrew O Shaughnessy are just two of the many top class senior players in the county who have featured regularly in the pages of The Green and White Magazine since they first started to make a name for themselves on their primary school teams... Gavin O Mahony Did you ever look at the faces in the old class photos on the walls of your school and wonder Where are they now? Or look at an old copy of The Green and White and ask yourself the same question. Well, let s look at one example. A long, long time ago (10 years to be exact) a boy played hurling with his school team in Kilmallock under the expert guidance of his teachers Mr Barron and Mr Ahern. When he was in Sixth Class, the school won the South Limerick Roinn A hurling final and qualified to play in The Limerick Leader Cup in the Gaelic Grounds. They defeated Doon CBS in the final and Gavin O Mahony accepted the famous trophy on behalf of his school. A photo appeared in The Green and White capturing the historic moment. Five years later, Gavin had the good fortune to captain Limerick in the 2005 All-Ireland Minor Hurling Final saw Gavin climb the steps of the Mackey Stand to accept the Daly Cup as Kilmallock were crowned Limerick Senior Hurling Champions. Gavin is no stranger to our readers as he is one of the top names in Limerick hurling and rated as one of the most promising players in the game. But he never forgets that it all started when he wore his school jersey in Cumann na mbunscol competitions. Who will follow Gavin s example? It could be you. Winner alright! Kilmallock Captain & Man Of The Match Gavin O Mahony proudly raises the Daly Cup. Photo John Mortell Gavin O Mahony accepts the Limerick Leader Cup from John O Shaughnessy in 2000 Kilmallock s Andrew O Shaughnessy, winner of a senior County Championship medal in 2010, captained South Limerick to victory in the 1997 Mackey Cup 34

There are 10 for you to discover Hello G&W, This magazine has gone under my radar for a number of years now. I last recall seeing it at home in Cappamore about a dozen years ago when my nephew was much smaller than he is now. It doesn t help that I ve been living out of the county for nearly 20 years too. Anyhow, it looks great--downloaded the latest PDF yesterday. I had a particular interest in it as I was down to help out with the Mackey Cup this year and wanted to read the Cup report. I was gratified to be namechecked at the end for my whistling efforts :) On another GAA matter, I have a large Limerick GAA programme collection. I have almost all Limerick Senior Hurling Championship programmes going back to the mid-40s - only missing 49 Waterford, 58 Tipperary, 63 Galway and 64 Clare to go back to 1947! Can anyone help? Keep up the good work! James Lundon Dear Editors, I love the mag and can never wait for the next issue. Keep up the good work!!! From Finn Hourigan, Killinure NS 35

36 The Back Door 2010 was the first time the Limerick Senior Hurling County Final was broadcast live on national TV. The match between Kilmallock and Southern Emmets was televised as part of their GAA Beo show by TG4. Three weeks later the TG4 team were back in the Gaelic Grounds to broadcast the first match in the International Rules series between Ireland and Australia. Doon and South Liberties contested the County Cup final on the same day as the senior decider.
