This explains why the club has never had an alcohol-fuelled incident while its bar has been operating. In an effort to showcase its responsible attitude in this regard, the club is applying for registration with Good Sports, a nation-wide scheme run by the Australian Drug Foundation (ADF) aimed at reducing the focus of alcohol in community-based sports clubs. The scheme seeks to recognise through a certification and audit process, those sporting clubs that serve alcohol in what it calls a healthy and family-friendly way. The Sutherland Shire Council now requires all sports clubs that use its grounds to be accredited with the program. Although we play on a ground owned by Boystown, the club felt obliged to guage future expectations of the wider community and apply for registration. Bosco s licensee, Neil Skillcorn, has been working with Good Sports since late last year, a relationship which recently culminated in a presentation being given to our committee by Rachel Lynch, the scheme s local representative. According to Neil, Bosco is looking at Good Sports as a way to prove to potential sponsors that we run a club which understands it responsibilities when serving alcohol. We want to rubber stamp practices that we already employ. said Neil. There are three levels of certification with each level taking approximately one year to achieve: Level 1 Liquor license Bar management (RSA training) Smoke-free Level 2 Maintenance of Level 1 criteria Enhanced bar management (RSA training, etc.) Food and drink (low and non-alcoholic) options Safe transport policy Diverse revenue generation Level 3 Maintenance of Level 1 & 2 criteria Alcohol management policy One of our big advantages is we don t rely on alcohol as a revenue stream or for any form of sponsorship, explained Neil. Our bar has been there purely as an accepted social service. All of our bar staff are trained in the responsible service of alcohol (RSA), we don t serve beer in glass nor do we permit smoking in the club. These are key to obtaining Level 1 registration. I can t see how the program will outwardly alter how we do things because we do them well anyway. he added. The trend is for sponsors to require beneficiaries to prove they operate in an acceptable manner when serving alcohol and the Good Sports program offers this proof. In the Shire, major sponsors like The Tradies require such proof which means it is only a matter of time before others do too. Bosco views the need for registration is simply getting a head start in protecting its sponsorship dollar. Good Sports clubs are allowed to promote themselves as compliant and are then placed on an online register where results can be filtered by area and sport. REP HONOURS FOR RAPER Bosco s latest representative player is Monty Raper from the U11As. Monty was recently selected for the NSW Mackillop Catholic Primary Schools Team following trial matches with district and regional teams. In June this year our Monty joins his Mackillop teammates in St Marys to trial for a place in the National Championships which is held in Queensland at the end of the year. Good luck Mont. You ve made your club and your family very proud. SUPPORT SUNDAY SENIORS This Sunday we have a full day of footy at Boystown featuring the two U16s sides and our senior team, the U21s. The day starts at 11.15am with the U16Bs playing Aquinas. Next is an all-away U17B match between De La Salle and Sutherland from 12.20pm. Third up is Bosco s U16A team up against Cronulla-Caringbah at 1.45pm, followed by our in-form U21s who kick off to Cronulla-Caringbah at 3pm. Supporter numbers are growing on Sundays and the club hopes the trend continues.

2 U13b Won 8-6 In a tough and sometimes spiteful game the boys really earned the 2 points today. They played well in patches but silly mistakes and not getting to their kicks kept De La in the game. Some good strong forward play enabled the ball to get spun wide and this is when we looked most dangerous. There was also some good strong defence, but there was also some poor attempts mixed in as well. Leading 8-6 with only seconds remaining, De La Salle got a penalty next to the post. With their fans screaming take the two they decided to take the tap which saw them run into a Shaun & Hayden sandwich (not very tasty) and with the help of almost all of the team the tackle was made and the game was over. Man of the Match James Flood for a strong game. Zac Wyenburg scored our two tries. U11a vs Yarrawarra Lost 6-46 Aquinas were the better side in defence today to seal their win. Our playmakers Lachlan, Jack, Blake and Logan did their best to find gaps and Jo was able to snatch three tries. Oliver, Jo and Luke lead our defensive strike. Daniel and Riley were consistent with their hitups. Despite Aquinas defence there were still great off-loads just enough to let Aquinas have a glimpse of the best attacking side in the comp. The highlight of today s match though, was not when Ryder was totally creamed by the brute strength of Aquinas forwards, but when, after having his wounds treated, he came back on the field and kept playing, despite his fears and injuries. Ryder won today s encouragement award for his bravery against a side that would not give an inch. Daniel won the Man of the Match. Each week Daniel is improving in his attack and defense and is developing a great palm that allows him to consistently break the forward line. You played really well today boys. Giving a side like Yarrawarrah more than 60% possession makes it difficult to be competitive and the halftime score reflects that point. Coach Craig Taylor gave the team a stern dressing down at the break and asked them to stand up and put in for the 2nd half. It was a much improved Bosco Bulldogs in the 2nd half with Monty Raper crossing over for a great team try off the back of the famous Morse move. Max Hogan converted for a 30-6 scoreline. While it was a much improved effort by the boys in the 2nd half they still had a 5 minute lapse which saw the Tigers run in 3 tries. In the end it was a big loss with the only positive being a better 2nd half performance. In conclusion congratulations from all the players, parents and friends of the Bosco 11A Bulldogs to Monty for his selection in the MacKillop Rep Side. Monty Raper scored one try and Max Hogan 1 goal. Coach s Award went to Max Hogan. 3 U9a vs Yarrawarra Lost 54-0 U16a Lost Lets just say it was a forgettable scoreline! Coming from B grade last season the boys now realise this is a new ball game. Yarrawarrah finished runners-up last year in the U/8 As and are known for their size and physical play. They are a formidable team and a worthy A grade side. Our boys knew this game that it was an insurmountable task. Despite this, they took the field with enthusiasm, belief in their ability and a willingness to accept the challenges this match presented and that is what the great game of Rugby League is all about, finding the courage within even though the odds are stacked against you. Yes, it is clear the boys need to work on holding a firm defensive line and moving up but they never stopped trying. With limited control of the ball it was difficult to find good field position or gain any momentum. Boys don t be too disheartened, even the game s elite have been beaten badly (particularly when ever Easts played Parra in the 80s). Lets learn from this one and look to the future. 998 Old Princes Hwy opp Epic Realty A tribute to Italian culture Engadine Char Grilled Chickens Shop 13 Waratah Arcade OK it was a loss, but it was the 1st time they have beaten you since Rnd 1 last year and you did no worse than other teams that have played them. They are a nasty conceited bunch of players and I hope you learnt from this and we put them back in their place next time. The game was hard fought and a few lapses and mistakes cost us dearly. Cut them out and we are the better side. The forwards played well with Damon having his best game so far this year. The backs, well a few played out of position but it worked well. Jake played at fullback and crossed for two tries. Robbie s try at the end was entertaining too; he started the move with a little kick through that was chased by Tate who kicked again for Nathan G to regather and offload back to Robbie for the put-down. Two great goals by Nathan K, but guys, you don t give him many easy ones and he still gets them. Next week is Cronulla Caringbah so good luck and bring home a win. Two tries to Jake Hollis and one to Robbie Lightfoot. Two goals to Nathan Knigge. Our defence was oustanding with Joel, Luke O and Lachlan making some try-saving tackles. It then came to our attack which would have tested any team s defence. Eden, Harry, Jesse and Sam ran very hard and were only caught by last ditch defence to stop them scoring tries. Cooper took control of the dummy half role and gave good service to Will to set up his runners, one of which was Luke A who made a lightning run to score a try. We tried our new training regime which involved no boring footy drills, just fun games and it paid dividends. We may stick to this all year! Just a big thanks to Damien and Harry H for your time you dedicate to the boys at training. Keep barking you little Dogs! Two tries to Lachlan and one each to Luke A, Will and Joel. 4 U10c Lost 4-28 Round 4 saw the U10Cs play De La at Boystown. Again the boys were up against it from the start as we were only able to field nine players. Although we lost the game I was very happy with the boys performance individually and as a team. De La s main difference was they had one kid that was very fast and could run around our 9 players. Our boys were more than competitive in every other area of the game. The boys deserve a big pat on the back for turning up each week to play with nine players. On the weekend the boys improved in the areas we addressed from the week before and never gave up. As a coach I will not ask for anymore than that from my team. Keep playing with the same attitude and a win will come with or with out nine men. Strong games by Will Smithers who did the tackling of three men, David Cook for a strong captain s game and who lead from the front. Our Man of the Match went to Zach as he also did enough tackling for three men and never stopped trying. the party shack one-stop party shop Frozen Finger Food Frozen Cocktail Machine Table & Chair Hire Balloon Decorations DIY Balloon Kits & Partyware Shop 3, Miyal Pl Engadine U16b vs Como-Jannali Lost After last week s win we failed to shine on Mother s Day although we did have some promising moments. The final 10 minutes before half time the boys defended well to force errors and put points on the board. Some solid running by Dylan, Stuart, Lachlan, Sean and Michael helped. Our attack picked up 10 minutes before and after the break. We had moments of solid defence from Hayden, Max, Josh, David, Jacob and the two Adams, but a few too many ball handling errors and offside rulings kept us on the back foot. This was a game that our boys should have won. In the 20 minutes that we were focused we scored 16 points and kept Como at bay, but we need 100% commitment for the full 60 minutes from every boy. Under adversity Sean Gannon performed brilliantly giving 110% in defence and attack. It was a tough week for the Gannon family and our thoughts and prayers are with Pauline, Marty and family. 5 U10a 2 Won 28-6 What a difference a week makes. This week we played De La 2 and came up with our first win of the season. The whole team played their best football of the year so far. Everything we practiced at training we put into place and finally crossed the line for our first points of the season. It was hard to single out any one player this week as everyone played their backsides off. The most pleasing aspect of the game was the passing of the ball; we moved the ball from one side of the field to the other a number of times throughout the game and scored some great tries. In defence we moved up and tackled hard with our smaller blokes again causing havoc around the rucks. Will B, Jake, Nathan, Mitchell and Riley crossed for tries and Jake, Nathan, Riley and Luke kicked goals. Thanks to Zac and Will S for once again backing up and lending us a hand. Thanks to the Mums and Dads for their help in the canteen and on the BBQ. But the boys stepped up and stood toe-to-toe with a physical De La side out to smash us. A great start saw us control the ball for the 1st 15 minutes with raid after raid. Eventually, Skin Jnr crossed in the corner. Muls great sideline kick saw us 6 up and well on top, but De La kept coming back and evened it up before half time. Condor, Terb and Sandy were awesome. Skin again killed them from dummy half whilst Jordan, Stubbsy and Hoodel were dangerous. In fact, all the guys got stuck in. Pebbles & Clint added to our injuries but played on strong, whilst Stubbsy, Pan, Muls and both Skins all spilt blood in a very tough game. Ball control and great direction from Muls & TK saw us cross for a number of 2nd ½ tries but the score didn t reflect a close hard fought game. Tries to Threeskin, Tom, Stubbsy & TK - Pan 3, Muls 1 goal. Sponsor s Man of the Match was Sandy Foster. Last round s matches U7 green vs Yarrawarra Lost A narrow loss to the Tigers, but the boys started to gel into a team to be reckoned with (as long as we avoid that pesky sideline). Man of the Match was Brodi Ballard who made some crunching tackles and scored a storming try in the corner. Tom Gilbert proved his strength running straight up the middle knocking down opposition like tenpins. Will Atkinson ate his Weetbix that day because he crashed through the defence for a try and made some try-saving tackles. We could barely see Zane Ryan because of his blinding speed as he ran the length of the field for a try palming off those who dared to give chase. Alec Jeffrey earned the Encouragement Award for his try and if not for the defence of Jack Wasson and Adam Fettell, I m sure the score would be more against us. Two of our tall players, Bailey Smith and Steve Cooke, teamed up to show the Tigers that we were not there for a picnic and a paddle pop. 6 U14b Lost st session FREE U8 makos vs Engadine Won 18-4 This is probably the best performance this side has produced for a couple of years. We may not have gotten the 2 points but we played with great aggression and commitment that has sometimes been lacking for the full 60 minutes in the past. A fair result would probably have been a draw in a high quality match but with the scores locked at 12 all with 1 minute to go a missed field goal attempt failed to go dead and a freakish bounce saw De La regain possession and place the ball down centimeters before the dead ball line; hooter goes, game over. Disappointing as it was every player should be very proud of themselves and if we continue to commit to EVERY game we will be out there in semi final time. sparkle p o o l s 962 Old Princes Hwy, Engadine Design Construction Renovation Maintenance Club Heathcote is proud to be the Major Club Sponsor of the Bosco Bulldogs 24 Oliver Street, Heathcote ROWLING AUTOMOTIVE Pty Ltd Unit 3, 118 Caldarra Ave Personal Training Group Exercise Specialists lgbfitness.com.au U14a Won /44-46 Flora St, Kirrawee What a turnaround in attitude and commitment within a week. After a hard week of training the boys turned up to the game in the right frame of mind. The first half performance was near perfect with the forwards charging onto the ball making valuable metres. Christian, James and Joel were unstoppable and created plenty of space for the halves to spin the ball quickly across the backline. With Bosco dominating possession the game was all but over by half time after we scored 6 unanswered tries to James, Joel, Daniel, Christian and Ryan to lead Aquinas came out firing in the second half but our defence was tough and disciplined especially Corey s one-on-one defence. Scott stopped a certain try to Aquinas stripping the ball out over our line. Second half tries to Corey and Daniel s third for the game, while Scott converted 6 from 7. Sadly Ryan Kayes sustained a very serious injury breaking both bones in his left forearm and was operated on that night. We all wish Ryan a speedy recovery. Having already beaten this Engadine side, the boys assumed they had an easy game. Engadine, however, were fired up and took it to our guys. Their defence had improved and they scored the first try. We found ourselves behind and making uncharacteristic errors. A request was made for the boys to defend better, to complete our sets and to be patient. The boys answered the call with a reply through Brad who continues his great run of scoring terrific tries. Tom organised the ruck while James, Josh D and Jacob acted as dummy halves, all three taking good last tackle options. Noah and Harrison showed good pace out wide while Jarrod, Josh G and Jack carted it up all day. Our error count eventually dropped and our defence improved. A clever blindside play by Troy saw him fly down the wing to score a try. This wasn t our best game but we did enough to win. Two tries to Brad and one each to Jacob and Troy. The Man of the Match was Troy and the Encouragement Award went to Josh Doyle. The first four rounds of 2010 saw Max Darlington (left) and Christian White from the U14As both pass the 100 game milestone for the club. They ve played integral roles in the ongoing success of this team and we hope they continue to lend their experience and ticker.
