3 WVFG NEWSLETTER APRIL 2011 Aldinga beach for Mullet Whiting Snapper at the Norma Dismal day at Ardrossan Mick M went down to Aldinga beach with his family and grandchildren during the school holidays after some of the mullet which were along the gutters close in to the shore line. They took with them a couple of different baits to make sure they would get some fish for the younger kids to keep them interested for the day, Gents, Cockles, and Seaweed worms as well as a Mullet mix was used. The mullet mix in a berley spring with a hook under the spring was the best method to get a keeper, surprisingly the Gents were not a good bait, as the Mullet were not interested in them at all. A good number of legal sized fish were caught, as well as a lot of unders, but it was mainly the bigger ones t h a t w e r e c aught, and the y o u n g siblings r e a l l y had a g o o d time. Vic picked a couple of fine days to go out to the Norma wreck with his sons looking for the whiting, although they were patchy and only in loose schools, the did manage to pick up 20 Whiting on the first day as well as a few keeper Snapper. It is pretty well excepted that you have to do a few drops out there for the Whiting if you want to get your bag limits, the fish are all good sized at the moment with only a few throwbacks amongst them, of course there are pleny of the undersized bait stealing snapper about, all contesting for your tasty cockle on the hook. Going back to the same area the next day, Vic and crew were able to get another 18 Whiting, applying the same method. Vic advised not to use any burley if you go out to the Norma wreck as it only attracts the sh!tt!es and the undesirables to your baits. With great expectations Greg D. and myself headed off once again for a day's fishing at Ardrossan on Monday 4th April. We picked up some extra bait plus the mandatory cream cakes at Port Wakefield. It was going to be a real good day with a relatively early start and that in itself is a winner when you have Greg D involved. The moon was right and the tides were good. We met up with Lofty and his friend Tony at the boat ramp and immediately reviewed our position. The waves were up a bit and also the tide was out as far as I have seen it at Ardrossan so much so that both Lofty and ourselves had some difficulty getting out with the very shallow water. Nevertheless we hit the sea at around 11am hopeful in the knowledge that the weather would settle down a bit. That was not to be the case and when the S.O.D. rolled up a while later conditions had worsened. Sid did finally launch however and was content and bright enough to fish the shallows only. We persevered trying spots up to 15kms out. We got tossed about a lot and matters were not made better by the distinct absence of any fish bar one Dogshark and a myriad of undersize Snapper. The best part of the day was when we were given the opportunity to watch a pod of 9 Dolphins frolic about and around the boat for some 15 minutes or more, then disap-

6 WVFG NEWSLETTER APRIL 2011 Smashed Spuds Pre-heat oven to 200 degrees Celsius. Boil potatoes until they are almost cooked through. Drain. Place the potatoes on a paperlined baking tray. Break up the potatoes a little with the back of a fork. Don't mash them - just break them up a little. Drizzle over the oil and sprinkle liberally with fresh rosemary and salt Bake in oven for 30 minutes until golden brown. Quick Traffic Lights Cook the peas and corn until almost tender. See instructions on the packet for timing. Add the capsicum and continue cooking for 3 minutes. Drain well and add salt and pepper to taste. Fish gm (1 and 1/2 pounds) white fish fillets 2 cups of cornflakes 1/2 cup plain flour 3 tablespoons of sesame seeds 1 teaspoon of dried oregano 1 teaspoon dried basil 1/2 teaspoon of dried tarragon (if you like it) 1 teaspoon dried mustard powder 2 eggs, beaten 1/2 teaspoon salt, pepper to taste Place cornflakes, sesame seeds, herbs, mustard, salt and pepper in a food processor and make fine crumbs. Coat fish in flour, then in egg and then in the crumb mixture. Shallow fry in a small amount of oil, turning the fish half way through cooking. Serves 4. On the Easter weekend we decided to go and try out the new camper trailer with some friends so it was decided Lake Eyre was going to be the destination due to it being in flood and none of us had seen it that way before. The roads were a bit ordinary to say the least due to washouts but we took it slow and all made it safe. We stayed on a Station about 90k's from Marree not far from the hot springs. Not far from our camp site was a few smaller creeks still with water flowing so the kids promptly set the yabby nets and within a few hours we had yabbies on the campfire. I have not seen yabbies that size since I was about 10 and they were in large numbers ( not that we waisted to much time counting as they went straight into boiling water). The next day we decided to travel to Coopers Creek and try for a few hours of fishing. As soon as we arrived the lines got wet as the ladies made lunch. We were getting bites almost immediately and i managed a 39cm Callop. then the kids got a few more fish after that. we didn't stay as long as we would have liked as we to travel back to the campsite before dark to cook dinner as where we stayed the were no facilities whatsoever. The next day we travelled to Lake Eyre but didn't get time to drop a line in the water. All in all it was a good weekend and worthwhile trip.

7 WVFG NEWSLETTER APRIL 2011 It s a Bird! It s a Fish! It s Supermale! It s the parrotfish, a fish that looks like a bird! But it s no ordinary fish: it s a female, it s a male, it s a supermale! Why there are even supermale Queen and supermale Princess Parrotfish. And not only that, these strange, bird-like, gaudily colorful fish travel in herds and graze on plants. So how can one fish have the beak and colors of a parrot, behave like a cow, and change from female to male and from male to supermale in a single lifetime? For the parrotfish, it s all part of an ordinary day in the coral reefs. Home on the Reef Water-bound, scaly, gilled, and finned, parrotfish are all-fish, in spite of the name. They have large, smooth scales and can be brightly, even garishly colored. Their teeth are fused into beak-like structures that make them look a bit like parrots. Very common on coral reefs, parrotfish are herbivores and are therefore restricted to relatively shallow water where sunlight penetrates to allow plant growth. They often travel in groups, and, like terrestrial grazers, they crop from various locations (and thus do not destroy their food source). Parrotfish use their beaks to nip pieces of large algae and to scrape algae and other encrusting organisms such as sponges from rocky bottoms. In the process they ingest large quantities of rock and coral, which is ground to a fine powder by highly specialized teeth in their throats. They then void the ground-up rock and coral, thus creating sand. Turns out that most white sand beaches in the tropics come from the poop of parrotfish and their peers! A study in Bermuda estimated that parrotfish create a ton of sand per acre of coral reef per year. Those swimmers over coral reefs have discovered that when parrotfish feed, the noise of their teeth scraping rock is easily heard. Supermale Gets His Female These striking fishes undergo an unusual sexual development, marked by distinct color phases. In some species, all the young are drably colored females, and some of these then change to males. In others there are two kinds of males those that start life as males, and those that complete a female phase before transforming into males. A number of species include juvenile, young adult male and female, older female, and terminal male or supermale phases. The Stoplight Parrotfish is one species with all of these phases. Its young adult/female coloring is so different from that of the supermale, the two were long thought to be different species. Most adults of a given parrotfish population are ordinary males and females; supermales are pretty rare. So what s so great about being a supermale? Well for one thing you get to be super colorful. And for another, a supermale parrotfish gets to spawn with an individual female or a group of females, while ordinary males spawn in groups with other males. A supermale, therefore, is more likely to pass his genes along to a new generation. A Little Night Mucus At the end of a busy day, parrotfish turn in for the night. They burrow into the sand or squeeze into a crevice to sleep. Some species of the genus Scarus, which includes both the Queen and the Princess parrotfish, are then able to secrete a mucous envelope around themselves. It takes a fish about half an hour to fully wrap itself in the slimy secretions, which appear designed to mask the fish s scent from hungry sharks and morays. A bed of slime may not seem like an apt resting place for a Princess, but it sure beats being a shark snack. VETERANS RACE DAY Five members of the WVFG attended the annual veterans' race meeting at Balaklava on Wednesday, 13TH April,2011. One couple made their own way to Balaklava with the rest catching the bus put on by the TPI Association at a minimal cost. The bus stopped at Two Wells where the local RSL put on a sausage sizzle and refreshments which all the travellers enjoyed. The races provided a good spectacle however unfortunately with minimal financial benefit to most. Lunch was provided by the Balaklava Racing Club and volunteers from the local community helped and a good meal it was too. All in all a very good social day out and I would recommend that when next year's event comes around you seriously think about attending. I know for a fact that all those that attended from the WVFG are keen to line up again next year. Tight reins to all.. Percy the Punter "

8 WVFG NEWSLETTER MARCH 2011 Last month we had an article about the future Marine Parks that will be introduced to South Australia in the near future. A discussion also took place with various opinions from the members as to what they had heard. At the next meeting Mick has invited Trevor Watts from the South Australian Recreational Fishing Advisory Council to give us a more detailed and up to date account of what is happening. Trevor will be speaking after our midway break, it is in your best interests if you need to know the facts of what is about to happen to your favourite fishing spots along o u r c o a s t l i n e. Once you have your group together, then I will leave it up to your group to book into the Cabin Park and pay your own accommodation, a deposit is required to secure the cabin, this way there is no monies to collect, and if you drop out, it will be your problem of how you get your money back from the Cabin Park.
