WVFG NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2011 On Sunday and Monday 6th & 7th February went fishing with friends from Warooka with 2 boats. We went to on Whiting, 12 Snook plus some other fish. As usual the wind blew on both days. Thursday 10th Feb. both boats went to Port Vincent They use Snook as Snapper bait and NO sinkers, we were getting bites before the baits touched the bottom. T h e y s a i d t h a t The Snapper were on the bite at Port Vincent Edithburg, it was very windy, my boat went to Point Turton and fished out from the marina and the others stayed at Edithburg and fished. They bagged out on Snook and Garfish and we caught Salmon Trout (11). The next day my boat fished at Port Vincent and bagged out on Garfish, 1 Squid, 3 Snapper, 3 Whiting. The other boat went to Corny Point and almost bagged out leaving the boat ramp at 5 a.m. which meant I had to get up at 2-30 a.m. and leave at 3-00 a.m. We both went to their snapper spot and both boats had our quota of Snapper within 30 minutes and were back at the boat ramp before daybreak. I was home in Adelaide by a.m. The Snook were extra big and most were over 80 cm. Snapper don t usually bite on the bottom, so it s best to have the baits above the weed line. Boy, what a lesson in fishing. Ike A very lean month was February, due to lack of interest in charters by members, plus the weather factor, there is very little to report. On the 27th Jan, Clayton required 4 people for a top up, I could only get 3 starters, this was cancelled due to a poor weather report. The 5th Feb. Roy B. and I, had a full crew with Clayton. This was again Cancelled, however he got another booking and went out, much to his regret, as it blew up and he ended up coming in with little to report. The next trip on the10th Feb, Clayton asked me to help him with a top up crew, I was unable to arrange any except myself so arrived at Pt. Vic. at His bookings failed to arrive, so Clayton suggested that we have a go just out side the island in the shallows, we tried many spots, catching 1 or 2 K.G.W. in Next Pondie charter 17th March most spots. They were all around the 40 cm+size we then tried inside the island only being able to get under size fish. Returning back to Pt. Vic just after lunch with 11 KG. 1 large Flathead (Claytons) 1 Gar and 1 Tommy. That was the extent of my February report. FUTURE ACTIVITIES: I have a charter booked out of Pondalowie on the 17th March with REEF ENCOUN- TERS and at this stage I only have 7 starters. The cost $250 which includes overnight accommodation. We will most likely have a go at Tuna as well as the usual species that you get down there. If you are interested please give me a call. p.s. NEW MEMBERS ARE WELCOME TO JOIN US. Tug.

WVFG NEWSLETTER - 4- FEBRUARY 2011 The reports were down as were numbers but that s to be expected as the new year begins. The weather hasn t been kind thanks to the God of Fishing, so, many people had not been fishing. We need to make a virginal sacrifice to the Great God Ba al for better weather at group activities in (after the rain debarcle on 8th, maybe we had better not. Ed.) Pete S. reported that he had fished off Glenelg a couple of times and that he had scored a total of 15 KGW. Pointed out that on the second day it rained and he lost sight of the coast and found he was geographically embarrassed because he couldn t see which way to go because of the rain. But he followed his compass and found his way back. The price he pays for not having the Boat Pedro went out with Rod L. and caught his first legal snapper from the Port Wakefield area, it measured 54cm. Over all, it was poor fishing explained Rod. Most of the problem came from small snapper in what sounds like plague proportions but if that is the case, then it augers well for top of the gulf fishing next year. Equally, Rod said that they caught large numbers of undersized crabs too, but to his distaste, not a single KGW. Vic E. stated that he decided to be reactive to fishing and made a rash decision to go out with two of the women in his life. They left North Haven and headed south to Semaphore, however, the wind and sea were rougher than expected, so when the women unloaded their berley over the side early, So he put it in reverse and went home. Vic is now convinced that he has to shape his life around fishing instead of shaping fishing around his life. Ramp in his GPS. I present the "Tool of the Month Award " to Peter on behalf of Spike and the Executive Management Group, a subsidiary of Spike Publications. Spud had a couple of days on the water in the past month and brought back some squid and some Gar, but he hasn t been out much for obvious reasons. But on a much brighter note he added that Sue was much, much better and coping well. Ron S. went down to Meningie to have a look at the lakes now that the water level has risen. Wanting to see what was available he tossed in an Opera House yabbie net and left it u n t i l morn- ing tea. O n retrieving it he found it c o n - t a i n e d two Catfish, some Callop and some Carp. He also noticed that people were fishing nearby for the first time in a long while.

WVFG NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2011 Stonie, Spike and Nick W. went fishing at Ardrossan and managed to catch a very large and lively Ray that gave them a run for their money, Stonie was just pleased that it didn t escape with 150m of his braided winch. Graham P went down to Wirrina for the cancelled fishing trip and he and Peter fished the reef with very good results of snook of consistent size and numbers. They did manage to catch some squid which went for both the table and bait. Almost all the snook hit lures at the top or shallow part of the reef making it easy to repeat the catch by following the GPS lines. The water was unusual in that the waves were 1.5m to 2.5m but were a long way between. Having sold the souls of his as yet unborn children to repair his boat, the Play Pen performed flawlessly in the large seas but Graham P was much happier back on terra firma. Carp Day Lofty has organised a Carp Catching Day up his way at Houghton, on a private dam on a date to be advised. It is a two-pronged thing where we help a farmer clean out his damn and we get crab bait in return. It is expected that the day and place will be ed and telephoned when available. Crabbing Day Future Activities The crabbing day remains on Tuesday 8 March and it is hoped that we will have plenty of Carp for bait on the day. It is proposed that we meet at the boat ramp at North Haven at 9.30, however, as was pointed out, high tide is 7.00am meaning we will be fishing the outgoing tide, not a good idea when crabbing in that area. There will be an early s t a r t e r or two on the day, so w h e n you do get on the water, find out who is out there and how they are doing. When crabbing between the Black Pole and Football Park, it is best to fish the sand holes because although crabs will move onto the broken ground, they spend much more time in the sand where they hide from predators, ambush lunch and sleep. Vic asked about keeping the crab net flat on the bottom as his experience has been that it tilts. It was suggested that the crab net not be thrown out too far and that the length of rope attached to the net not be tight to allow the rope to billow out in the tide. Tight crab ropes will also cause problems with anchor swing. If the anchorage is affected by tide, you need keep in mind that the swing range will be larger at low tide than at high tide and we ll be crabbing the outgoing tide. However, no matter where the vessel is anchored, the largest possible swing range should be considered, as well as what obstacles and hazards might be within that range markers, buoys or poles. Other vessels' swing ranges may overlap, presenting a further variable. Boats on permanent moorings, or shorter scope, may not swing as far as expected, or may swing either more rapidly or more slowly (all-chain cables tend to swing more slowly than all-rope or chain-and-rope cables.)

WVFG NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2011 Balaklava Race Day Balaklava races are on again. The Veterans Day race meeting is on 13th APRIL some of early starters for the group are Mick M, Nick W, Stonie and Spike. Nominations intending to be a starter can contact Stonie, or raise your own group and book through the TPI House front desk. If you require a northern suburbs pick up, ring TPI House on Mondays and talk to Sampson if he isn t busy with Delilah. Tickets are $20 which gets you into the course, the Veterans undercover enclosure, BBQ Lunch, $2.00 schooners of Coopers Pale Ale and a ticket in the raffle. Or you can book a seat on the bus for an extra $10 a rider. Lastly, Stonie advised that we have been contacted by Max Grund, now living in Hell over at Cowell and catching all the fish he can stand. Max says he is now ready for a group fishing trip to Cowell and June and July are prime times. You need to begin thinking about that as it won t be cheap to drag our canoes over there so car pooling is the way to go. Accommodation will be the caravan park. Exact dates are not yet determined. But just you watch this space. General Business Stonie showed us the Tide Book bought for the group as suggested by Paul Millbrook. Now we have the tide book, some silly arguments will cease when picking days to fish. Captain of the WVFG Dressage, Cap n Spike has 2 caps and two group shirts left for sale. Caps are $15 while shirts are $20. One of each has be sold meanwhile so I only have a XXL shirt remaining. If you want to clean out Ol Mother Hubbard s cupboard you should contact Spike via the allelectric telephono if he ever returns from Point Turton. Graham P spoke about the need for more input to the Newsletter. He reiterated with Mick M that Spike can only put in what is provided or what he hears or makes up from other sources. It is a good newsletter and we need content. He explained that it doesn t just have to be just about your fishing trips but could be tackle reports, like the one Rod L is going to write about his new snook and snapper softie lures. But when you do write them, and you are not computer literate, just jot them down in biro on a piece of toilet paper and hand them to Graham P at the meeting or post them to him at PO Box 1213, NORTH HA- VEN So tell us about a new boat you ve seen, improved boat ramps, missing markers, your fishing trip to Glenelg jetty, a visit to the lo-

WVFG NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2011 cal tackle shop, or, as in the case of The Sod, new inventions you have designed to make your fishing easier. If each of you set aside just one hour a month s that s about 20 hours of work we will have to fill our newsletter. And what about all the old fishing tackle you no longer need? Why not offer it for sale through the newsletter? Listening to some of the talk, it has become apparent that there are a lot of members who don t have a wide knowledge of fishing so any articles that deals with fishing techniques, terminal tackle, sinkers, lures, plastics or whatever, will add to the core knowledge of the group. Photos too are welcome. And one of our number noticed a For Sale ad in the paper this past week and brought it in. HORS A ANCER Hors, a ancer, a life gaket, good condition, $100, plus the phone number. He opined he should have rung up to see if there were any hors left! On a sad note, Ike advised that the bride was not well, indeed, far from it and Stonie expressed the concerns and best wishes of the members to her. The meeting closed at so that members could relax and talk rubbish to each other while they waited for lunch. Retiring Member Vince advised that Young Stan had decided that he was no longer able to attend the group or the trips so reluctantly has declined to be a member. He thanked everyone for the abuse they have given him over the years, for the happiness he had gained, the Pokie Machine money he had won and the camaraderie he had enjoyed, and wished the group well.

WVFG NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2011 OUR TRIP TO ARDROSSAN On the 8th December 2010 we travelled down to Ardrossan for 7 days of Snapper fishing along with crabbing. We stayed in cabins at the High View Holiday Resort. Roy fished with Pete and I with another friend Chris. The whole trip was disaster fishing for snapper. At that time in Ardrossan there was 6-8 professional long liners fishing the snapper area. Each putting 400 hooks in the water each time. They where catching up to 5 ton of fish a day and you dare not go near them as they have very large boats and are very intimidating as they said to me at the boat ramp why don t you amateurs go somewhere else and let us make a living. Some thing has to be done about their behaviour as if they continue to fish like this it is going to stop people coming to Ardrossan to fish and the town depends on tourists and especially fishermen to spend money. And money we do spend on food, accommodation, drinks and fuel. We have decided not to fish at Ardrossan any more at this time of the year. Roy and Pete tried all the known spots except where the long liners where and for a total of 7 days fishing they caught 4 Rugger Snapper one night and that was all. The crabbing was even worse as they caught hundreds of under sized blue swimmer crabs which all had to be return to grow bigger. A good sign for crabbers in the New Year. Roy and Pete also went dabbing for Garfish at Price and only dabbed 3 Garfish for the night. Roy said that it was more a lack of knowledge of where to go and more time spent in this area would bring about better results. They did however see many large Mulloway swimming in the shallows but they where spooked by the Yamaha motor. I guess an electric (battery operated) motor would be the choice to catch these huge fish which I am sure could be speared easily if you could stalk them quietly. Chris and I tried one solid day chasing snapper and our only result was a large fiddler ray. We then concentrated catching Tommies and salmon trout on the outer side of the BHP jetty at Ardrossan with 3 days of great fishing. We caught 200 fish each day and filled Chris s esky each time. Most days we caught about 140 slimy mackerel along with Tommies and salmon trout to make the total 200 fish. At first we gave most of the slimy mackerel away to people in the park but one morning we decided to cook some for breakfast. They are delicious and have a great taste like Tommies. No more giving away slimy mackerel for bait. We kept the next two lots for ourselves. Roy s Philippino family love eating them also. All these fish where caught using one size 6 circle hook on a leader with a small amount of split shot and set about 8 feet below the surface and using squid and pilchards for bait along with some of Chris s special burley mix which has many things in it including aniseed powder, curry powder, semolina, bread crumbs, flour, tuna oil, bran and pollard to mention a few things in his mixture. This is about all the news from Mud Crab s fishing adventure this time.

WVFG NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2011 Su is making good steady progress and ready for the next step G'day, Su had all the tests/ scans etc last week and we chatted to the oncologist Friday. The chemo has been very effective and the cancer has made no significant progress. However her blood marker levels are very high, so things can be expected to go a bit crazy now. The cancer/chemo/both (?) have damaged internals, so some repairs need to be done in that dept. before much else happens. The next tests are planned for 3 mths, by which time the doc says we will know what the cancer is doing, and can plan the next appropriate treatment - probably more chemo. In the meantime, Su is really comfortable. She charges about doing computer programming, works on her family tree, schemes about getting to the major cycling events, and for this - I'm really pleased! She gets tired quickly, but she drops off to sleep anywhere, anytime and then charges on. So, we carry on pretty well as normal! Murph This story can fit words.
