3 WVFG NEWSLETTER MAY 2011 Tuna Trawling at Port MacDonnell It was the Friday after Easter and the magnificent autumn weather was set to continue for our charter out of Port MacDonnell. Michael C, Paul M, Cousin Jeff, Robert (Pom), Lofty A stayed in a comfortable beach house in Port Mac which cost $100 per night. Nick and his wife stayed in a honeymoon suite at a Mt Gambier Motel. The team assembled on the jetty at about 6:30am the following morning, with some light rain falling to moisten up the jetty walk. Michael and Pom carried out a large ambitious esky which we later filled with tuna and other delicacies from the charter. We set off towards the Continental Shelf some 40 kms from Port Mac and depth of around 150 metres. On the way the deckie, Jamie, fired up the BBQ and we were treated to an egg and bacon sandwich as we motored to the fishing grounds. After about 1 hour s cruising we put out our tuna lures four across the back the boat and two outriggers on extended poles out to the side. Mark, the skipper, put a teaser into the water to get the tuna excited. (A teaser is a pick float covered in mirrors designed to attract fish up to the surface.) We headed for a small flock of seabirds as they are an indicator of schools of baitfish and hopefully with some Bluefin Tuna chasing them. We soon found 4 of the rods feeding out the line with a great noise from the reels. We let the lines run out a further 150 metres, the boat slowed and four of us picked the rod and reel to haul in our catches. You do need a gimble and a lift and reel in retrieving system to draw in your quarry. It a technique to practise so that you don t tire with a manual hauling in of the fish. By 9:30am we had our bag limit. One tuna per person! Mark, the skipper, promptly changed the lures to a barbless single hook designed to help us catch, tag and release the tuna. We landed 14 large kg tuna during the morning. The fish we kept were blooded and filleted so as to preserve the meat in pristine condition. About 40% of the tuna is discarded as the dark red meat often taints the flavour of the superb tuna cutlets. Between the tuna runs we enjoyed a BBQ sausage and hamburger cooked by our enthusiastic deckie, Jamie. After lunch we headed inshore to try our hand at drift fishing. We seemed to always be on a school of small gurnard fish which has poisonous spines and need to be treated with caution when recovering your hook. We caught some smaller red snapper, a small school shark and a few flathead. By the time we motored back to the jetty our deckie had filleted all the fish and packed them into our waiting eskies. W e s t r u g - g l e d d o w n the jetty with o u r p r i z e d c a t c h a n d t o o k them to the local bait shop to cryopack our fillets. We were able to snap freeze them overnight ready for taking back to Adelaide the following morning. The tuna trawling charter was a new experience for most of us and the relative ease of picking up a decent catch was a tribute to the instructions and planning by Mark and his son, Jamie.

4 WVFG NEWSLETTER MAY 2011 Overall it was a great experience and an enjoyable adventure out of Port MacDonnell. We can thoroughly recommend this charter. ($250 pp). Remarkable Charters Mark Moody mobile Two friends are fishing near a bridge. Suddenly a Hearse and two Funeral Cars go over the bridge so one of the men stands up, takes off his cap and bows his head. When the cars have gone he puts his cap back on, sits back down and carries on fishing. His mate turns to him and says, " Dave, that's one of the nicest most respectful things I've ever seen " Dave replies, " Well we were married for nearly 60 years " Hi there, as you may have already guessed I have made my annual trip up to Darwin to escape the cold weather you blokes are having right now. We arrived in Darwin on the 30th April. I missed the Dawn Service in the Territory for the first time in many years. Malcolm arrived some 2 weeks later. Not much to report on the fishing scene, due to the late run off, however things are starting to move now, we tried the boat out the other day, out of Shoal Bay into Mecketts creek with a 7 meter turn around in the tide, it was almost a dead loss as the crab pots were hard to keep track of, and the bottom was hard to hold. However we managed to get 11 nice mud crabs and a real nice flathead plenty of small stuff and heaps of throw back crabs i.e.;- UNDER SIZE AND EGGS and with the price of mud crabs in the supermarkets now at $49.95 a kilo a well worth while day out. Hopefully I can give you a better report next time. regards Tug. From the TOP END This article was recently reported by Claire Peddie, Science Reporter, Adelaide Advertiser. Authorities are considering giving fishers year-round access to cockles on both sides of the Murray Mouth. Commercial Fishers take their cockles from the Coorong side of the Murray Mouth on Younghusband Peninsula all the way to Kingston in the South East. Recreational fishing for cockles is largely restricted to Goolwa Beach. However, senior fisheries manager, Dr Lianos Triantafillos says two years of research funded by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation, will feed into a new strategy. The stock was fished heavily for many years so we want to make sure it is recovered sufficiently, he said. Once that s done we re going to look at sharing both beaches again. For 25 years, John Jackson from Hindmarsh Island has enjoyed fishing for cockles on both sides of the Murray Mouth. I think cockle fishing should be allowed on the other side, for recreational fishers as well as the commercial fishers, Mr Jackson said.

6 WVFG NEWSLETTER - 6- MAY 2011 It is less than 4 weeks before our next fishing trip to Cowell, on the west coast.we have 4 cabins booked with the Cowell Cabin Park for the week commencing 18th July through until the 22nd July, our host Max G. will be away until early July, this will give him time to resettle before we attack the area. There were some concerns about the best tides and times, which are the following week, I asked about changing accommodation to the following week, however the cabins are fully booked out the following week, I also enquired if any cabins were available on the Sunday night in case any of us thought about getting there on the Sunday ready for a quick start the following day, unfortunately the earliest we can get in, is on the Monday. Cowell is a five hour trip by road. At this stage the response has been slow although indications were made at the last meeting, there is still time to have a re think. We should be looking at taking the minimum vehicles and maximum boats, tif you want to go then closing date is at Fridays meeting, which will give us tample time to cancel cabins that are not taken up, we will do our best to get you onboard a boat. Once you have your group together, then I will leave it up to your group to book into the Cabin Park and pay your own accommodation, a deposit is required to secure the cabin, this way there is no monies to collect, and if you drop out, it will be your problem of how you get your money back from the Cabin Park. The cabins are all 2 bedroom, with double bed, second double and single, with ensuite and all facilities including airconditioned ensuite cabins, Free Austar TV, Facilities for the disabled, Free undercover BBQ area, Walking distance to local shops and hotels, The boat ramp and Town centre is a short walk of about 500 meters Prices are $100 a night for 3 people or $33 each, if you require bed linen there is an extra charge of $15 p.p. You negotiate with the park owners Heather and Peter. 7 WVFG NEWSLETTER MAY 2011 INGREDIENTS: 4 alligator fillets ***STUFFING*** 1/4 cup margarine 1/2 cup onions, diced 1/4 cup bell pepper, diced 1/4 cup celery, diced 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1 cup water 2 chicken bouillon cubes 2 teaspoons parsley, chopped 1/4 cup scallions, chopped 1 1/2 cup bread crumbs from day old bread 1 egg 1 pound dark crabmeat PREPARATION: Carefully pound alligator fillets into hand-size rectangles, without tearing meat. Lightly season with salt and cayenne pepper. Set aside. In a large skillet, melt margarine and Sauté onion, bell pepper and celery until tender. Add salt, pepper and garlic to mixture and stir. Dissolve bouillon cubes in water, add to mixture and boil for 3 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in remaining ingredients, carefully folding in the crabmeat last. Spoon stuffing onto alligator fillets and fold over "omelet-style." Secure edges with toothpicks if desired. Grill in a pre-heated (350 degrees F) lightly greased skillet. Serve plain or with your favorite seafood sauce. Flares Flares (two red hand flares and two orange smoke flares) must be carried in all boats operating more than two nautical miles (a nautical mile is kilometres, so two nautical miles is 3.7 kilometres) from shore. If operating more than 10 nautical miles (18.5 kilometres) from shore, two distress rockets with parachutes (rocket flares- red) must also be carried. In case of trouble, these can be your only means of indicating distress or that assistance is required. They are also essential for showing your l9ocaiton to a search vessel. Flares should always be stored in a waterproof container and, in speed boats, endeavour to store them where they don t get too much pounding in rough conditions. You are required by law to always replace your flares before the expiry date. The expired flares are to be handed into the local Police Station for disposal. If you don t know how to use them, make yourself familiar with their operation even though you can t let one off just to see how it works.
