- 3 - WVFG Newsletter May 2012 Activity Reports Very little fishing has taken place since our last meeting, the cold and wet weather has taken its toll on our aching bones and ageing bodies, however it wont be long now before the sun starts breaking through the clouds, warming up our bones, getting us all back into the swing of things. With quite a few missing from this meeting it allows us to presume that not a lot of fishing took place. So to kick off with what has happened, Lofty gave us a report that he had gone out to the Fairway beacon on a week day morning to work over some of the whiting marks he has on his GPS. Now that Lofty has his Stressfree anchor winch installed, and working a treat, he is able to move about more often to find the fish, all he has to do now is say, Its time I moved from here and find another spot, so with the flick of a switch, the anchor comes up nice and quickly, at the rate of 90 feet per minute, so he is on his way before he could get up out of his seat and grab hold of the rope. After many tries all that he was able to catch was one (1) Flounder, it was legal size as well. Working his way back to the St Kilda ramp, he did try a few spots that had been good to him in the past, this time without much luck although he did catch a few Mullet, all reasonable in size. Murph had been out to his Garfish grounds at Hallett Cove only once since our last meeting, once again John caught his usual number of fish, it wasn't the bag limit that is his usual catch, but enough for himself. John mentioned that the season for Gar is coming to an end and if you want to catch Gar you will need to go out to the deeper waters, however the Gar will not be as big as they have been during the summer months. A trip up to the Riverland's, in particular to Loxton with a couple of mates who regularly go there for the Yabbies. They have a small tinnie which will fit 3 people in comfort and go into the back channels off the main river itself and drop their nets, the maximum number of single ring hoop nets allowed per person in South Australia is 3.

This has been taken from the PIRSA web site on regulations for yabbies:- Yabbie pot (including Opera House) Yabbie pots do not need to be registered, but do need to be buoyed (if not set from shore) and tagged. Specifications Maximum dimension:100 cm (1 metre) Maximum funnel diameter: 7.5 cm Maximum number permitted: 3 per person Structure: No more than 2 fixed entrance funnels allowed. Marking: 1 white buoy (if not set from shore) 1 tag with name and address of owner WVFG Newsletter May 2012 Activity Reports Opera House net Klaus and Trevor show their recent catch of Yabbies from Loxton

- 5- WVFG Newsletter May 2012 Activity Reports Tug s Northern Adventures Hi everyone, A very short report this time. We arrived in Darwin mid April, I did not make the march or dawn service this time, I did go to the RSL for the gun fire breakfast with the intention of marching from the RSL to the dawn service, once outside, one drop of rain and I was off home to watch it on t.v. We never had an opportunity to go fishing until 22nd May. We departed bufflo creek at 7am with 2 boats, headed towards Mecketts Creek, one of the boats expired on the way out, about 4km from the ramp. Mal and I headed off to set our pots, then returned back to the other boat and towed it back to the ramp. Returning to pull our pots, we crabbed the run out tide. Here once the tide goes out you are trapped in there until the incoming tide, so we crabbed until there was enough water to get out and having our bag limit, our last run we were able to get our bag limit, We caught a few undersized crabs which we returned to grow bigger for next time, and finished up getting 15 crabs, so it was one of our best days. By the time we returned the other boat was going again, but it could not get back into the creek so they crabbed outside the creek. Their result was one size mud crab, which shows you have to be in the right place at the right time. regards Tug. ANNUAL PIPI CLOSURE COMMENCES The annual closure for the taking of Pipi (Goolwa Cockles) came into effect in South Australian waters at midnight on 31 May and will reopen on 1 November During the closure, recreational fishers are not permitted to take Pipi at any South Australian locations including popular Pipi fishing spots in the South East, the Coorong, Goolwa Beach, Eyre Peninsula and the West Coast. The seasonal closure is an important management tool in place to help ensure the continued sustainability of the Pipi fishery and reduce year-round fishing pressure. COWELL TRIP IN AUGUST The trip to Cowell/ Arno Bay in August showed some interest from some of the members. The best tide times are Mon 20th till Friday 25th, planning to depart on Sunday 19th Aug and leave Cowell/Arno Bay Sat 26th, a $10 deposit will be required to secure your spot on this trip. Ideal arrangements would be 3 or 4 person per Car, Boat, and Accommodation. This will keep costs to a minimum. Accommodation has been pencil booked for 3 cabins at the FRANKLIN HARBOUR CABIN PARK. Our Last trip proved to be very successful fish wise, bagging out each day on KG Whiting., the bigger boats could easily do a Snapper trip weather permitting. Start canvassing your boat and crew now. FINAL NUMBERS ARE NEEDED BY JULY MEETING

- 6 - WVFG Newsletter May 2012 At our last meeting a discussion took place on the do s and don't s of Yabbying in the waters off the Murray at Loxton. This information is from the Fisheries Website, so we assume it is the Gospel truth. Recreational river fishers are being warned to ensure they are complying with fishing rules and regulations after more than 80 pieces of illegal fishing equipment was seized in April. Patrols by Fisheries Officers between Katarapko Creek and Old Customs House saw a range of illegal and unmarked nets seized and numerous warnings issued to fishers. Fisheries Officers are conducting further targeted patrols in the area and are urging fishers heading out on the river to research local fishing rules first which includes understanding the type of gear and number of devices you are legally allowed to use. Senior Fisheries Officer for PIRSA Fisheries and Aquaculture, Dave Grant, said it was extremely disappointing to see this type of behaviour. Ignorance is not an excuse, Mr Grant said. We all have an important role to play in protecting the sustainability of fish stocks and fishers need to take ownership of their responsibilities as these rules are in place to ensure resources can be shared between users and enjoyed by future generations. Some of the issues encountered included: Incorrect use of buoys, which are required to be white and at least 2 litres in volume. Unmarked Yabby nets, which should be clearly marked with the owner s name and address on a tag or the white buoy. Use of excess Yabby nets and/or operating nets belonging to another person fishers are only able to operate up to three opera house nets at any one time. Use of Yabby nets (mainly opera house nets) without entrance funnels (7.5 cm rings max), which are required to restrict other species from entering the trap. Future Activities A sinker making day has been set for Thursday 28th of JUNE at Sids place, so gather all your bits of lead, some sinker moulds and all the necessary gear you will need. Arrive anytime after and bring your own eats and drinks, If you are all good boys Sid might just shout you one of his home brew.. A spare gas bottle or two will come in handy in case we run out. It has been 2 years now since we had our annual Port Victoria whiting hunt, so its time we got back on track and had another one. Lofty has made a booking for the Group to stay in Rowley's place, a lovely accommodation with all our needs catered for. The week of Mon 16th July till the Friday morning 20th is all systems go, the tides are good, the winter whiting should be in full swing. If you would like to be in it there is still time to put your name down this Friday at the meeting along with your $10.00 deposit. All the relevant info will be available at the meeting.

- 7 - WVFG Newsletter May 2012 In Robbies Kitchen COOK your CATCH When you want to show your affection by pulling out all the stops for a special occasion meal -- Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, birthday, anniversary, etc. -- why not let the salad show how you feel, too? Best of all, this salad tastes as good as it looks. It features apricot-glazed shrimp, sweet peppadews filled with tarragon-scented feta, and brandied apricots over baby greens. Ingredients: 3 Tbsp brandy : 1 Tbsp water : 6 dried apricot halves : 2 Tbsp crumbled feta cheese (or mild blue cheese) 1/2 tsp cream or milk (plus additional as needed) : 1/4 tsp dried tarragon 4 medium peppadews (see Cook's Note): 8 peeled and cooked jumbo shrimp (see Cook's Note) 4 thin wood or metal skewers : 1 Tbsp apricot (or peach) preserves: 1 Tbsp light olive oil 2 tsp white wine vinegar : Pinch of cayenne pepper : Salt and pepper to taste Preparation time 25 minutes Cook Time: 10 minutes Total Time: 35 minutes In a small saucepan, heat the brandy, water, and apricots until just simmering, then cover and turn off the heat. Let sit for 15 minutes. Mash the feta, milk, and tarragon together until almost smooth, adding a few more drops of milk if needed. Fill the peppadews with the feta mixture. Dry the shrimp thoroughly between plain paper towels. On a flat surface, arrange 4 of the shrimp into two heart shapes. Push a skewer across the tops of the shrimp, maintaining the natural curve. Place a peppadew inside each 'heart' and push another skewer across the middle, through the shrimp and the peppadews. Repeat with remaining shrimp and peppadews. Preheat broiler on high heat. Place the shrimp skewers on a broiling pan. Brush with the apricot preserves. Broil briefly (just a few seconds) very close to the heat until lightly coloured. Set aside. Remove the apricots from the brandy and cut into strips. Whisk together 2 tablespoons of the brandy with the remaining ingredients. Divide the greens between two plates and drizzle some of the dressing over the greens. Top with the apricot strips and the shrimp skewers. Makes two servings of Twin Hearts Apricot Glazed Shrimp Salad Cook's Note: Pair up shrimp that are approximately equal in size. If they don't have enough of a natural curve to form a proper heart shape, adjust the curve as they are skewered. Peppadews are a sweet, slightly spicy pepper from South Africa. They can be found in jars in the pickle and olive section of the supermarket.
