At the going down of the sun, and in the morning. We will remember them. Lest We Forget. Vale I would like to inform our fellow fishermen of the passing of one of our foundation members of the fishing group. Bill Beaton passed away in his 85th year on Jan 3rd this year. Bill spent his Military time in the British army attached to the Artillery, later changing to the Education Unit, where his skills at teaching English was more value than firing Artillery shells into the air. Bill served in Singapore and Malaya, before ending his service and migrating to Australia, where his first teaching appointment was at Mt. Gambier. Bill moved on to be a Master of English at Pultney Grammar School which continued on for 15 years before retiring. Bill lived at Elizabeth and is survived by his wife Olive. His love of fishing will always be remembered in the early days of the group and his trophy fish was the Snapper with Whiting close behind. Tug Wilson attended Bill s funeral on behalf of the group on the 7th January. 3 War Veterans Fishing Group -3- Newsletter January 2010 Well here we go, as this is the first reports to come through since the last time we met in November, there should be some great stories and catches to be reported, starting with Kevin S who was on the Pondalowie charter in Mid January. The most novel catch of the day was an Albatross hauled in by Vince I. when it became entangled. It was later released after spending some time on deck with us but in the release process sunk his beak into yours truly...ouch!!!! Well it was a crackerjack charter as it promised to be. Full compliment of 12 on board. Honary member for the day Mr Alby Tross enjoyed the company of the group Vince helps Alby on board The looks of anticipation says it all on the faces of the gang, Mick, Tug, Evan and Nick were all camera shy by the looks of it. Four records bettered or created. Blue Morwong (Queen Snapper) School shark Octopus Sweep. G.P. With a Nanny Mick s Octopus Roy, with his catch of the Year The weather was superb with just a bit of swell and not a whitecap to be seen all day. A couple of the boys were nonetheless unwell, the worst being Parksy who kindly berleyed up for us. The charter o p er at or, Mark W ynber gen a n d h is deckhand "Freckles" were superb and he tried a lot of spots for us. We got Snapper, Nannygai, Trevalley, Sweep, School Shark, Octopus and a few assorted unwanted Gurnard, Rock Cod, Sergeant Baker etc. The rewards of a hard days work for the boys One of the best days on the water in a long time and good fish to boot. I do not think it will be our last out of there. More reports page 6

5 War Veterans Fishing Group -5- Newsletter January 2010 Members of the Eyre Peninsula WVFG met at a Port Lincoln Hotel early in December for a Christmas get-together and meal in appreciation for our Skipper David and his wife, Rosemary, we gave them their lunch and their first drinks. It was a happy occasion, unfortunately one of our members had a big operation mid October and was not well enough to attend. Mid December we went to the groups leaving the moorings at 8.00am. David H had decorated the eating area on the Elly Mae with silver tinsel and bells, looked quite effective. On board with skipper David and wife Rosemary, were David J, Margaret V, Johnny H and myself, and friends Ken S and Leo H, they were good at untangling lines and taking the hooks out of the fish, and very good at fishing too. It was a dodge tide, the whiting were hard to find even the rubbish fish were scarce, the snook were not biting, somehow we did manage to get 22 whiting and about the same number of tommies. During our lunch break we had home made Xmas cake and wine, it was a great day out and we arrived back at the moorings about 5.45pm. Lloyd H our sick member had a smaller operation this year and gone home to his own house to recover, so we suppose he will be eager to find out when our next ishing trip will be. Johnny H celebrated his 90th birthday on Australia Day, so from all of us on Eyre Peninsula, have a Happy New Year, good health with good fishing to all the WVFG members in Adelaide and around the state. Editors comment: The Eyre Peninsula members get out at least once a month, Margaret N sends a report of that trip, which is probably more than the city members get to do. Dont forget to send us a photo of any unusual catch or record fish that you get while on one of your trips out. Kevin would like to have your names in our records lists. There is a combined blue swimmer / sand crab catch limit in South Australia. For example, 22 blue swimmer crabs and 18 sand crabs constitutes the daily crab bag limit of 40. Tuesday 23rd Feb. is our next activity, We are meeting at North Haven boat ramp at 0930h for a crabbing expedition, the crabs are still running and from reports from around the traps is that they are all of good size and full of meat, so what are we waiting for. The tides on the day are : 0851 is the high tide of 1.42 m while the low is not until 1442, going down to 0.60m, there should be enough movement in the water to get the crabs on the move, don't forget to bring your rods as well you never know you could manage to pick up a feed of Whiting or squid as well, we have the whole gulf to ourselves that day so you get to choose where ever you want to try for the crabs, Wonga Shoal, Semi reef, near the jetties at Largs or Semaphore, go down to Grange if you wish or maybe in front of AAMI stadium is another good spot, I caught a monster crab in line with Bower Rd once, it measured 75cm from claw to claw. The day will finish when you have had enough or you have bagged out. Hope to see as many of us there as possible Can you either me or give a ring if you intend on taking part or if you will have your boat as well. Crabbing is a popular recreational pastime in South Australia. The two main species targeted are blue swimmer crabs and sand crabs. The giant crab (or king crab) is also occasionally caught in rock lobster pots set in deeper water. A number of legally permitted devices are commonly used to catch crabs. They must meet the following dimensions. When baiting for crabs, you are permitted to use fish or fish based products only. It is illegal to use bone, meat, offal or the skin of an animal including birds. Hoop nets A net attached to a hoop. Maximum hoop diameter: 107cm Maximum depth of net bag: 92cm * If no other fishing gear is used, a maximum of 10 hoop nets can be used. If other fishing gear is used (ie rod and line) then the maximum number of hoop nets Drop net Two hoops joined by a cylindrical cone-shaped net bag. Maximum hoop diameter: 107cm Maximum depth: 92cm Three drop nets per person can be used. * If other fishing gear is being used, you are only permitted to use 3 drop nets OR 3 hoop nets OR a combination of both to a Hand net May be a dab net, dip net or shrimp net consisting of conical shaped netting which is attached to a hoop which is attached to a rigid handle. Maximum hoop diameter: 1 metre Maximum depth of net: 1 metre Crab rake Hand-held device for scraping the bed of any waters consisting of a pole with a rake

6 War Veterans Fishing Group -6- Newsletter January 2010 Greg D. got away to his place at Point Turton over the xmas break for a week, managing to get out on the water 4 times, Garfish were in plentiful supply wherever you went. Whiting and squid were very hard to find. Sid J. ventured up to Port Hughes and found the going tough as well, using all his skills Sid only managed 1 Snapper and 1 Whiting, his next trip was down Brighton way and returned with 7 Squid 12 Garfish and 2 Blue Crabs, next time out he fished the Grange grounds and had a return of 25 Garfish and 15 big meaty Crabs. Tony L at Port Hughes also found that the fish have gone elsewhere, but with many boats in the area, the fish have scattered to all points, Snapper are still around, you have to search for them, while Squid and Crabs are starting to show on all the known grounds, the Crabs are all meaty and tasty. During the last week in January, Tony found schools of Whiting on one trip out caught 24 Whiting all over the 42cm size Vic E reported on the charter out of Pt Vic in December, there were 8 on board and had good returns of Snapper, not quite the bag limit, however Richard I caught the ever elusive 1 meter snapper, this one measured 1.05m, a new group record, while only weighing in at 9kg, the longest skinniest snapper seen for ages. Keith Masson introduced Vic to a different type of hook called a true turn, the hook is almost a C style with a bent barb, once it goes into the mouth it catches on the inner jaw bone and stays there until taken out, the Snapper cant spit the hook once he has it in his mouth, this should return less missed Snapper and bigger fish. Peter C has again fished the Price area and returned with bag limits of Yellowfin Whiting and plenty of good size Crabs are moving at the moment Ike T. Was on the Pt Vic charter in Dec as well, Ike added to the list of fish caught saying that 30 ruggers were caught as well as 7 big Snapper and 1 KG Whiting Spud, went out from Sellicks beach on 3 occasions later in the evenings, catching his usual, Garfish, Tommies, and Squid. Graham P said he got up at 0400 to go to the Goannas, somehow he didn't manage to convince any of us that he did, he went on to say he had runs at 0600 which realised him 2 Snapper to about 48cm each (no photos were submitted to prove he actually did get out of bed that early). Another day he got a good amount of Crabs in the Black Pole area and on a third trip out caught 16, 31cm Whiting just outside the St Kilda channel, cant remember if he said he had some one with him or not. Jim Pugh has sold his boat now, so is land based now unless someone gives him an invite out in their boat, he went to Edithburgh over xmas with his grandchildren, from the jetty they caught Tommies, Whiting and 8 Blue Crabs, Jim said all the Tommies and Whiting were of a decent size. Max G said the Whiting have been very good around the Cowell area, Max has his boat permanently at Cowell now. Mick M was on the Pondy Charter, he was pleased that 2 Sharks were caught, 1 Sweep and Whiting were amongst the fish caught Klaus R spent 4 days at Pt Hughes, did very well on Garfish, Squid and Tommies, I hear he gave his catch to the PAMFC for them to sell to help raise the money they need to be there in Woody attended his first meeting for a couple of years, told us how he was fishing for whiting while wading in thigh deep water, felt something pulling on his creel, it was a cuttlefish with his feelers wrapped around his catch, woody did a Vince, reaching down, grabbing the cuttlefish behind his head and adding him to the days efforts.

8 War Veterans Fishing Group -8- Newsletter January 2010 The reaction from the members in relation to our all colour production of the newsletter has been very positive, with it getting approval from all that have seen and read it. The RAR Association at Burnside are doing the printing for us at what it costs to print to help us keep our distribution costs to a minimum, also the convenience is worth while, no more running all over the place to get the newsletter printed. At the last meeting many members paid in their $20.00, It can be done at a meeting or via the post in the way of a check or money order, made out to G DWIAR and I will take care of the rest, as we have no official positions in the group it was mutually agreed upon at the November meeting that I would be the holder of donations to pay for the costs of the newsletter, receipts would not be issued, with members donations being acknowledged in the newsletter. Donations paid in by the end of January are: Sid Jamieson; Lofty Atkinson; Kevin Stone; Peter Collyer; Ron Swain, Ike Treloar; Jim Pugh; Stan Stone; Vince Iannuzzi; Vic Ellul; John Hamlyn; Klaus Racman; Greg Dwiar; Ray Vadeikis; John Murphy; Graham Parks; Bernard Wood (part); Tug Wilson; Rod Langman. After the success of the last charter out from Pondalowie Bay, Tug has arranged another on Friday 12th March, if you missed out on the last charter and the fish that they caught then now is you chance to join in and have a great time, For all the good info on travel, accommodation and pricing, give Tug Wilson a call, his number will be on the Members list with this issue. How to prevent shark attacks : 1. Don't swim in the ocean or sea. More than 99% of all shark attacks happen in large water masses, also known as oceans or seas. The way to establish if you're in an ocean or sea is to taste the water. It should taste salty. 2. Swim with people. Always make sure there are people already in the water before you enter. Chances are you will be able to swim faster than them and save yourself. 3. Don't go in the water without a knife. That's to stab the nearest swimmer when you see a shark. As soon as he/she bleeds profusely, swim as fast as you can to the shore and claim you tried your best to save him/her. You might end up getting an award for bravery. 4. Listen intently All sharks have a 'theme song' - If you hear the following, swim for your life : da-dam, dadam, da-dam. If it sounds like this dadam, dadam, dadam you're already gone. 5. Don't panic. Stay calm when a shark bites you. Its over, you're gone and it doesn't help you try and survive. The people on the shore will appreciate it, they don't want to hear your mad yelling and screaming, it's not nice. It's not all about you. Hmmmmm. I d love to go next time Thanks to G.P. for the wonderful advice
