Some of us made up as crew for mark W on December 2nd. Tug, Pom, Steve & Derick (Son-in- Law of former member.). Departed Pondalowie at 7.30am. We headed towards Wedge Isl. After several drops we had 8 big snapper and countless number of Nannygai, ruggers and a couple of sweep. We dropped anchor S.W. of Wedge and then all hell broke loose, all 12 ob board had fish on their lines, resulting in 5 double headers and 7 single large snapper. Mark and his deckie were flat out sorting the biggest for our bag limit and getting the rest back in the water. One of the double headers was TUGS, he was unable to get them to the top and had to hand his rod to the deckie from 80 meters of water and 2 big ones were too much for him. With all fish boxes full we headed back home. Mark stated that when we had our bag limit, no more lines were to go into the water at that spot. We shifted to various other spots and got our top up. December 3rd. I had a minor stuff up with the reserve crews I went out again on the 3rd with Mick C, Fred with yet another top up crew we went to the same area as the previous day and there were fish showing at all drops but they were only playing with the bait, after yesterday it was quite a let down although we did manage 2 big snapper 1 to us and one to a seal who had a great time with it., this of course upset the chap along side us who had caught it and gave the rest of us quite a few minutes of entertainment before it won the battle. Results were plenty of ruggers up to 60 cm. Plenty of Nannygai and again large Sweep. December 6th, Norm B. & No 2 son Evan and myself went out with Clayton from Pt. Victoria. I did not record the catch, but must have had a shitty on after getting a run, then being unable to hold my rod with the drag fully tightened, Clayton offered to take over for me, suddenly the 120lb braid parted between the rod tip and the water, we finished up with nothing. The trip just prior to Christmas on December 21st we got a crew from within our group, being Tug. Norm B, Evan B, Nick W, Roy B. & Vince I. We had many shifts during the day, Clayton worked hard for us, and a final result were 6 big Snapper (Tugs big one 61 cm.) the remainder of the big ones were all quite good size. Vince starred with 2 big Snapper, both being 81 cm. weighing 13Kg. 30th December. Tug, Mike C, and Fred, as a make up crew for Clayton. Again working very hard, trying many drops. I had a big run and handed it over to Clayton this time, the line went between the roller and the hanger and again away went 120lb braided line. The day finished up okay, one 6 foot plus Gummy Shark in excess of 30 kg. 2 big snapper, 3 nice ruggers and 2 lonely KG Whiting. Tuesday 4th January. This was the first charter for the year, saw yet another group crew plus a chap and his young son. Tug, Mike C,Norm B, Richard I, Evan B, all had a good day with plenty of moves resulted in a bag limit of big Snapper for all. Norm not content with 1 big one he got 2 and threw one back credit to Mike M, he talked the young lad all the way up so he landed his big one, result 7 big snapper, 17 or 18 K.G. of which M.M got 8 of them plus 2 squid. (Note:- Tugs snapper set the record for this years Hall of Fame with 97cm ) FOR INFO :CLAYTON 'S CHARGES FOR THIS YEAR FOR WVFG MEMBERS IS $145 WITH NO EXCEP- TIONS. OUT SIDE THE GROUP IS $200 SO IT IS A VERY GOOD SAVING. TUG

We are home safe and sound, after a good trip which spanned from the 13th Dec to 2nd Jan. Leaving Adel we travelled down the Coorong, and how good it was to see the lakes full again. Penola was still full of Mary McKillop celebration gear as we passed through on our way to Casterton (the home of the Kelpie dog breed ) where we camped on the side of the flooded Glenelg river ; no fish caught. The next day we travelled through Coleraine; Hamilton; Penhurst; Mortlake; Camperdown; Colac and Geelong to Queenscliff our evening stop. Early the following morning we boarded the ferry across the famous RIP to Portsea from where we followed the coast as far as possible to Montrose where we stayed with Helen's sisters family. The four of us went to the EAGLES concert which we all enjoyed as well as Lofty with the BIG COD at SWAN HILL spending a birthday with Helen's sister. Ken and I (brotherin-law) went out on a charter whiting fishing one day; $90 for 6 hours; 12 whiting each (27 cm legal size and 20 pp bag limit ) a couple of good size salmon and yellow eyed mullet topped of the catch. Left Melbourne on 27th and found ourselves next to the River Murray above the Hume Weir that night. Hooked one good fish but failed to land it The next day we travelled through Albury / Wodonga, Howlong to Corowa, our stop for the night, again no luck fishing but the mosquitoes were ferocious and were to be the same for the rest of the trip. We had bought a North East Angler magazine, and Moulamein on the Edward river at the junction of the Billabong creek had some good reports even though the river was in flood, so we travelled through Tocumwal, Finley and Deniliquin to get there. We stayed two nights at Mooloomoon station where I caught my first Murray Cod 38 cm (to keep they have to be 60cm) The owner took me out in his boat but I could only manage one good bite Swan Hill, Robinvale, Mildura, Renmark and Berri, led us to Lake Bonney (full of water again) for our last night away. It was a good break away and now we have to settle into our homely routine.

MEMBERSHIP DONATION REPORT 2010 was the first year the Membership Donation was introduced. This step was well received by members with over two-thirds making their annual donation of $20. This money was put towards the production costs of the monthly newsletter which was posted to all financial members. Further copies of the newsletter were forwarded to various ESO's,veterans welfare organizations and medical practitioners. Trophies which were not kindly donated by our sponsors have been purchased with these funds also. Those that made the contribution can be confident in the knowledge that funds were used solely for the purposes for which they were sought and have resulted in a great improvement in the quality of the newsletter as well as the distribution of copies to persons likely to benefit from involvement with the Group. It is intended to continue with this Membership donation and I am hopeful that in 2011 we will be able to boast of an increase in the number of member donors together with increased participation. I trust that 2010 has been a good year for you all as we look forward with great anticipation to 2011 STONEY Fishing for Whiting Sillaginodes punctata Of the several whiting species found, King George Whiting is the largest and most renown. It would have to be considered as one of the best table fish around, and South Australia is most fortunate to have the densest concentration of King George Whiting, in Australia. The fish themselves,f reeze very well, and the fish are very easy to scale and fillet. King George Whiting can be caught all year round, winter usually seeing the largest congregation of them in the gulf waters, while early summer can land you a catch off lower York Peninsula. Dodge Tides can be slow, but you are more prone to get a hook-up in shallower waters than the deep. Generally, with any fish, several hours after the turn of the tide, whether it be high or low, can be very productive. Once the King George Whiting are biting, it is important to land the fish, re-bait and recast your line as quickly as possible. King George Whiting tend to stay in one area for only around 20 minutes before moving on. Try casting to the edges of sandy patches among weed beds, as the fish tend to come out and sniff the berley and bait. With the life cycle of Whiting, spawning takes place in April through June in mainly offshore areas. The water currents then carry the fertilised eggs and larvae into sheltered bays of mangrove tidal creeks and seagrass areas. Undersize fish are most numerous in the tidal channels and tagging has shown that their movements are not extensive at this stage of their lifecycle. During the summer months, when water temperatures are relatively warm, growth is rapid and most fish reach a size of about 28cm, when about two to three years old. Areas where King George whiting is caught at this time include Kangaroo Island, Coffin Bay, West Coast bays and Southern gulf waters. By the time the fish have reached 35cm (three to four years of age) most have moved out from the bays, progressively moving into deeper offshore waters as adult fish. They can reach a maximum length of 70cm, weigh up to 2.5kg, with a maximum age of fourteen to fifteen years. Legal Minimum Length Current Limit: 30 or 31 cm, dependent upon location Area East of Longitude 136 including all waters of SG & GSV. West of Longitude 136 but not including Gulf waters. 30cm, 12pp, 36 per boat Legal minimum length is 30 cm. The reason for such a

End of Year Dinner and AWARDS The last Saturday in November the WVFG had their Annual dinner and awards night at the Marion Hotel. The night was well attended with 12 members and their wives. Graham Parks, last years winner presents Richard with his award. the award was the nights Emcee Kevin Stone. The award for the Carp day was taken out by John Murphy, who managed the heaviest bag and most fish caught. Greg presents John with a Sports Marine voucher, thanks to Max Harrop at Sports Marine. by Richard Iverson with his Fisherman of the year award went to Greg Dwiar for his untiring efforts arranging trips, and Newsletter publishing, presenting Hi to all my friends in the WVFG. Mud Crab here alias Keith Masson in Vung Tau City, Vietnam with another fishing report of my recent trip to Port Pirie and Ardrossan. For those who do not know I live in Vietnam most of the year and return to Australia twice a year to have medicals and then spend 3 weeks serious fishing with my brother Roy and some of the time with Port Pirie Pete My plan this trip was to fish at Port Pirie for 2 weeks and the last week at Ardrossan as we had heard reports that in early December the Snapper are thick in the Ardrossan area. I commenced fishing on Wednesday 24 th November, 2010 and the weather was far from kind to us. Roy had purchased a 4.2 metre Quintrex Dory boat from the local boat dealer Boats and Bits and it was our first day out in it. We headed to Cockle Spit which is about 15 kms from the Port Pirie Boat Ramp with a full tank of petrol. Cockle Spit is about 2kms from the township of Port Germein out to sea for those of you who do not know the area. The boat was going great and with a new 30 hp Yamaha two stroke motor all was well. Things got worse though as an unexpected front came through and within no time at all we had 8 10 foot waves confronting us as at this stage we were in deep water and about 5 kms from our destination. The Dory Boat did a great job and got us to Cockle Spit safely even though we all got drenched with the squalling rain and wind. On arrival at Cockle Spit the front had moved through and the sea calmed down to a mill pond. We baited the crab nets which Roy had made in Melbourne using a bottom ring of 3 ft diameter and an outer ring of 3 and half ft diameter using 5cm mesh net for the netting part of the crab net. These nets are great as they catch a lot of shit fish (trumpeters) when you pull the crab net up and there is always plenty of fresh bait. They are also great for catching plenty of snapper, we use trumpeters for most of our snapper bait and it has been really successful in the past. Unfortunately the crabbing was not that successful as we only caught 12 large

male blue swimmer crabs (full of meat) and had to return many female crabs carrying eggs at this time of the year. Our trip back to the boat ramp in Port Pirie was going just fine, when we reached the pylons in the channel at Mangrove Point which is some 7 kms from Port Pirie the motor stalled and sputted then stopped. A check on our fuel tank found that it was empty and on our maiden voyage. What an embarrassment. We made the phone call to the SES and they came shortly after and tied us up along side of there large vessel and towed us back to the Port Pirie Boat Ramp. A lesson learnt from this always carry a spare container of fuel. We were fortunate that one of Port Pirie Pete s friend had a spare petrol container he was not using anymore and kindly gave it to Roy which he readily accepted as you all know that he is a Tight Arse and doesn t like to spend any money as a matter of fact I can assure you, he still has change left over from his first pay packet in So Lofty is not the only one who has had to be assisted at sea. By the way there was no charge for the tow and it became a rescue for their log. The only requirement that Roy had to do was produce his Boat Licence. The next day Thursday 25 th November 2010 we headed back to Cockle Spit again but this time we had two full tanks of fuel and we launched off the beach at Waroona Island which saved about 10 kms each way off the trip. The weather was kind to us on this day and in no time at all we where at Cockle Spit and had the crab nets baited and set in 12 feet of water. We purchased a new Garmin GPS Map Plotter and Sounder and it shows the water depth and water temperature along with many other great features. We are still in the learning curve with it though and it should be a great asset for our fishing trips. We had caught about 9 nice size male blue swimmer crabs when all of a sudden from no where came this big black image which was quite scary. It turned out to be a black backed White Pointer Shark about 5 metres in length and very mobile. It came under the boat where I was sitting up the front and lifted the boat out o f t h e w a t e r t w i c e. (This was a scary experience and one I don t ever want to experience again) He also had a go at our propeller and it was time to get out of there quickly. When he headed away from the boat I quickly retrieved the 3 crab nets pulled the anchor and Roy had the motor started and away we went with the big shark chasing us for about 50 metres and then we lost him. I have since been advised by my elder brother Len who is a fisherman in Streaky Bay that black white pointers are territorial so there must be plenty of snapper around for him to eat all year in the Port Pirie area. As a result of this incident we headed home for the day thanking our lucky stars that nothing more than a scare happened. It could have been worse as white pointer sharks have the ability to jump out of the water. The next two days we concentrated our crabbing and fishing at Port Davis which is 17 kms by road from Port Pirie, you can launch your boat at the concrete boat ramp and head down the Port Davis River and out to the end channel marker which is 8 kms from the boat ramp, fishing and crabbing in 20 ft of water we were able to catch 48 nice big blue swimmer crabs (full of meat) over those two days. For the next two days Roy and Port Pirie Pete decided to try their luck at dabbing for Garfish at Port Davis at night. Roy had brought his new set

the end channel marker which is 8 kms from the boat ramp and fishing and crabbing in 20 ft of water we where able to catch 48 nice big blue swimmer crabs (full of meat) over those two days. For the next two days Roy and Port Pirie Pete decided to try their luck at dabbing for Garfish at Port Davis at night. Roy had brought his new set of LED Lights with him from Melbourne and according to them both it lights up a large area and great for dabbing Garfish. They ended up with there quota of 120 Garfish on both nights so was productive. However I had the task to scale and fillet them. I have filleting Garfish down to a fine art and can do 2 every minute so in an hour, I was able to clean each nights catch, once I had scaled them. The weather turned sour for the next couple of days so we remained land locked. By this time the snapper season had commenced so on the 1 st December, 2010 we used Port Pirie Pete s Sundowner boat and travelled to Port Broughton to travel to the Illusions to try our luck at catching some Snapper. When we arrived there was 21 boats surrounding us and not much action happening. Apparently the day before on the opening of the season it was all fired up and snapper quotas where the norm. Not for us. We never even got a bite except for the normal catch of dog sharks. We stayed there for 4 hours on the out going tide and it had stopped flowing and still no action. We did see 3 nice snapper caught during this time but none for our boat. After 4 hours we decided to shift so travelled down to the Plank Shoal Light but still no luck only shit fish being our catch. There was one boat close to the Light pole that was having great success at catching Rugger Snapper. Off again and this time to the Middle Bank and then onto the Santa Anna where there was about 10 boats fishing. No one was catching anything. The next night Roy and Port Pirie Pete tried dabbing for Garfish off Waroona Island. The conditions where ideal to start with and they had dabbed about a dozen gar when the wind came up from no where and that was the end of Garfishing for that night. It was very disappointing, we had been in Port Pirie for nearly two weeks and so far not one snapper and only six dozen crabs which we normally catch every day at this time of the year. It was now the 6 th December, 2010 and Port Pirie Pete received a phone call from a fisherman friend who had been snappering the day before at Port Davis who had bagged out on big snapper. He gave Pete the GPS marks for this spotwe were now on our last day of fishing in Port Pirie and had planned to go and fish for snapper again at Port Davis where we had nearly bagged out the day before. We were anxious to try this spot so the boat was loaded with fresh bait and blocks of ice and in no time we were on the road to Port Davis. While travelling down the Port Davis River there was not a breath of wind and as we came to the entrance to the sea it was flat calm across Spencer Gulf. As the spot was only 9 kms from the end channel marker we were on the spot in no time with the calm conditions. Pete dropped the anchor on the mark and a check of the sounder showed fish everywhere under the boat. Our lines where baited and dropped over the side in 40 feet of water. Roy had no sooner got his bait to the bottom when he had a fish on. Then it was Pete s turn and then mine all within minutes of each other. A three way hook up Oh what a feeling. It was not long before we had 3 nice kilo snapper on board and on ice.

We re-baited and over the side again. Roy was on again in quick time and he retrieved another nice 10 kilo fish. Then Pete was on and he was really struggling to get this fish up it must have been bigger than the rest we had caught. His reel was peeling line off as quick as he could retrieve it and he the way from the West. From Pete s house looking out to the West the sky was pitch black and the cloud above us where beginning to roll past us at a great rate. At this stage in Port Pirie it was the calm before the storm and then within half an hour the storm hit. Tug has secured a date and is getting a full crew together for a charter o u t o f P o n - dalowie/marion Bay on St Patrick's Day, Thursday, 17TH March. This is the prime time of the year for fishing down that way so anyone wishing to participate should contact Tug for details. The Wirinna day fishing day on Monday 21st had to be cancelled because of the strong winds that were forecast down that way, with winds up around the 20 knot speed, conditions were not conducive for our frail bodies. A new date will be set at the next meeting. had the fish near the top of the surface when it broke off and with this it raced away taking the big school of fish that we had under the boat with him. What a blow, no more bites. We pulled up anchor and tried to find the school again with the sounder but to no avail. So we headed home with 4 nice snapper which had a smile a mile wide on Brother Roy s face. We were now on our last day of fishing in Port Pirie and we had planned to go and fish for snapper again at Port Davis where we had nearly bagged out the day before. I checked the weather forecast and all was not good as there was a severe thunder squall warning with possible winds from 60 to 100 kph on It was like a mini tornado, as it roared past us bringing torrential rain and wind and causing lots of damage not only to the Port Pirie area but as it moved through South Australia it caused flooding and major damage to housing and trees in its path. No fishing this day so we cleaned up and began to pack our things ready to move down to Ardrossan for a weeks fishing there chasing snapper and crabs. More of M u d C r a b s adventures next month. The next fishing day we have organised will be the Crabbing day on Tuesday the 8th March, meeting at Nth Haven Boat ramp at 9.30am. The High tides is Of 2.21, the low is at 1310 of 0.22, the next high is 1920 of Interested? Arrange a spot on a boat now. This will be confirmed at this months meeting Land based fishing in West Lakes near Vics place is on Tuesday 12th April. Arrive after 0930 to enjoy what the lake has to offer, BBQ s are available in the Park just off Brebner Tce, so bring along a lunch

The TPI Association will be guests of the Balaclava Race Club when the Balaclava Cup is run on April 13th this year. We should join in with the TPI Association and enjoy a fun day at the races. The cost is only $20 per person, which includes your entry into the race course, Lunch, some refreshments and includes a ticket in the raffle which could win you a seat at this years AFL Grand Final. In September. The association has booked a bus, so for an extra $10, why not go and return in comlete comfort and safety, then pick up your car from the Association on return. Just remember, its first with the money gets the best seat on the bus, Kevin Stone will be happy to take names and give them to the Association. Come on, if you have not had a day at the races for a long time, this is the one to go to. Kevin will talk about it at the next two meetings Some of the fillies you are likely to meet on course Fishing activities over the last two months were once again down on what they should have been for this time of the year. Roy went out on the Charter at Pt Vic in December leading up to Xmas day, the results were disappointing with only a couple of Snapper caught and a few Whiting. Roy went out from the O Sullivans boat ramp on 30th dec get 12 King george, 19 garfish and 12 big Tommies. Sid went to West Beach for crabs along as far as AAMI Stadium he got 25 big Crabs and 15 Garfish on the morning tides. Vince did a charter with Clayton in Jan he caught 2 Snapper over 77cm, he was then asked to stop spoiling everyone else's fun and put his rods away, the charter did get 15 whiting also. Rod and Pedro fished Pt Wakefield for a couple of days, using the morning tides they got 22 Rugger Snapper, 24 K G Whiting, and a 4ft Gummy Sharks well as 50 Crabs Lofty went to Port Prime and got 50 Crabs, tried for Snapper at the Goannas, but no luck. Greg went to Pt Turton over Xmas, very lean time, only 6 fish in 3 days. Mick M went to Goolwa Beach Cockling and easily got his limit of 300

size being stipulated is that at this length, the King George Whiting can spawn at least once, before it becoming a legal catch. Current Bag Limit : 12 per person per day. Current Boat Limit : 36 per boat per day Type of Tackle Use line between 4 to 7kg. A rod around 1.8m is ideal for both jetty and boat fishing. Hook Selection No.6 Beak-Nickel "Holdfast" nylon snelled hooks that come pre packed are ideal. For the larger variety, a No. 2 or 3 Beak-Nickel "Holdfast" hook may be necessary. These hooks have barbs on the shank, to better hold bait such as cockles more effectively. With the larger variety of fish, a 1/0 hook may even be necessary. Also, a short length of red plastic tubing inserted onto the shank and eye of the hook helps attract the fish. Best Baits Cockles, Squid, Prawn, Crab, Cuttlefish, Razor Fish, Pilchard Pieces, Whitebait and Tube Worms. I have always had great success using small strips and tentacles of Squid. Squid tends to stay on the hook better, and this bait will also take Snapper in the same area. When baiting a hook with cockles, cover the hook completely with the bait, and place the black body of the cockle near the point of the hook. This is what the KG Whiting will go for first. Berley Mix A berley mix of the diced pilchards and pellets, crushed cockles, soaked in tuna oil works very well. Also mix in some chopped White Bread and Bran or Pollard. In shallow waters, using a berley bucket will suffice. Or simply throw the berley into the water to settle, at timed short intervals. If boat fishing in waters deeper than 12 metres, a berley bomb of the above concoction may help, or use a fine scaling bag with a brick it in to settle the berley on the bottom. Early December Went to the family shack at a secret York Peninsula location (Black Point) for Christmas and to do some fishing. Trekked myself to another secret location east of the shack and west of the ocean on the point and dug up some very good seaweed worms from under the seaweed. But never got to use them on the yellow fin. Called back to ADE- LAIDE. So I kept them alive in a spare aquarium until I had time to use them. Couldn t travel but thought I d give the Yellow fin a go at semaphore. Went to the Bower Road end and waded out to ankle deep at low tide by the stone seawall and fished the incoming tide. Alas, no Yellow fin as the newspaper had said, but wonderful KG Whiting. Picked up a few both early morning between 5.30am and 8.00am then again between 7.00pm and 9.00pm that night. Not whoppers but they did manage on average 38cm and on my 4lb line they fight like Kingfish. Used two types of rigs: one with a very small sinker so the line rolled in the wash and one with no sinker but a small berley cage to bring them in. Well there is a lot of sand between fish, isn t there? I know a lot of people don t use berley for whiting but a lot of people don t get whiting either. Late December With only a few hours available to kill and there was no cricket on after Boxing Day I wandered down to the new housing development at New Port Keys and fished between the railway bridge and the boat moorings using soft plastics. Used to be a good place for Bream. Still is. They took the plastic with a vengeance. But I had to return about for every keeper. A lot of small Leatheries around the pylons as well. But it isn t a bad place to toss a line occasionally, though I did have a couple of people come out of their Ivory Towers and tell me it was private property but like the great fisherman I am, I ignored them. But it should prove good fishing for a small tinny or so.
