Jim Britton saltytalesfishingcharters.com Even though we will have some brutal heat heading our way, a look back at last years fishing log makes me anxious for July to get here! For inshore fishing, this time of year, get out early and rig up several top water plugs. I usually have one walk-the-dog (Zara Spook Jr.) style plug and one chugger (storm chug bug) ready to go. Redfish should go crazy for these plugs on the flats and fishing deeper areas should produce nice trout. These same plugs can also be used later in the day around bulkheads or docks for some fun ladyfish and jack crevalle action. If you cannot get out early, try the same tactics around dusk for similar results or fish after dark for the busy trout and snook (catch and release only as the season is closed) bite around dock lights. Offshore anglers will continue to find schools of dolphin. Looking for the telltale signs (birds or weed lines) in 130 feet or deeper should be the keys to filling the fish box. Bonita and blackfin tuna may also make their way into the trolling spread. Bottom fishing reports are looking promising also. Mangrove snapper from 5 to 15 pounds are being pulled off of many different wrecks and reefs. The reefs will also hold the normal residents like sea bass, trigger, porgy, grouper and amberjack. For those looking to fish nearshore July will be a great month to continue targeting kingfish, cobia, tarpon, and shark. These same species should also make their way within casting distance of the pier. Surf and pier fishermen will also be able to target pompano, flounder, whiting and bluefish. Remember sun protection and hydration, tight lines! 2017 Club Bottom Trip by Tim Miller The club bottom trip abroad the Sea Spirit out of Down the Hatch Marina was held on June 17, As the boat got further off shore the seas became calmed down and the winds were light. Greater weather stayed with the group for the full day. After boat ride to 24 miles off shore, the Captain anchored along a reef. Although the Captain made many moves around the reefs to find active fish not many fish were willing to take an ice bath in the fish box. The mates were helpful and friendly. Members did catch Grouper, Porgy, Sea Bass, Vermillion Snapper, Mangrove Snapper, Red Snapper, Trigger and sharks. An Octopus was also brought up from the ocean depths. A crew member was able to entice a nice Dolphin, with a jig, that was swimming behide the boat. Daniel St. Hilaire took 1 st place with a 4lb 6oz Mangrove Snapper, Michael Janzen took 2 nd place with a 2lb 15oz Mangrove Snapper, Dean Roberts took 3 rd place with a 2lb 12oz Trigger, Dan Gibson took 4 th place with a 2lb 4oz Mangrove Snapper and Scheyenne Welch took 5 th place with a 1lb 15oz Porgy. Dan Gibson won the Calcutta.

8 8 Club Meeting Minutes :00 7:30 PM: No Quick Tips at this meeting Pledge of Allegiance : Led by Pat Gleichmann Minutes of May 02, 2017 meeting were passed, motion made by Dean Roberts and seconded by Peter Bessette Treasurer s Report: Gary Fisher said we are 20% behind memberships from last year, he said the members should share with others all the club events and activities that are planned. Expenses are on track and in good shape, the club dues help us to meet our budget expenses, the scholarship and charity expenses and the Family Life and Fall, Gratitude America donations. We have many free tournaments for our members, he said that sometimes people don t win at the tournaments and then one day you will get a check and all your work will be worth it and you will be successful. The more you put into the club, the more you will receive out of it. Chuck mentioned that at the breaktime, we will be having a cake for the past administration officers and directors, they have left the board and this is a recognition of their efforts towards making the club better. Tonight s 50/50 amount will go to the Disabled American Veterans. There will be a survey coming to all club members in an shortly. We would like to gather your input on what you want to see included in our club to help it grow, so please fill out this survey to give us a better outlook on what changes we can implement for the year 2018 and our events! Weigh Master Report: Rita Waddell, said it has been a good couple of months, we put 125 catches this last month on the yearlong tournaments and thanks for the participation from our members. Chum Line gives you the results, our website might have more current standings, so check that also. This month s species list has been updated. If you have any fish that are missing from the standings, let Rita know. She asks that you please completely fill out the weigh slips. She also said that we need help for the tournaments and if anyone would like to help, to please let us know as we could use chairpersons for the upcoming tournaments. Welcome visitors and new members: We had 7 visitors or new members in attendance. Surf Tournament Wrap Up: Jeff Rafter was absent from this meeting and in his place, Chuck Gleichmann gave the wrap up for him. There were anglers signed up, there was great food and raffle prizes at the weigh in and a good time was had by all. We paid out $ in prizes, when we take in money, it goes back to the club for our events. The next surf tournament will be held in Oct., if you missed being in the tournament this time, gear up for the Oct. one. Bottom Trip: Tim Miller told us the club Bottom Trip will be on June 17 th, it is filled up with 40 people and has a waiting list. There is a flyer in the June issue of the Chum Line with all the information on it, including directions, boat leaves at 7 AM, spots on the boat will be picked at 6:30 AM, if you are delayed, call Tim to let him know. One of the raffle prizes is a ½ day trip on the Sea Spirit. Meet in the back of the room tonight if you are interested in car pooling to the boat. There are no glass bottles or braided line allowed on the boat, you can bring your own alcoholic beverage, food and bait in a small cooler, if you wish. Tim will be weighing in the fish for the tournament and also any you would like to include in the year long tournaments. Scheyenne Welch will be holding a Calcutta drawing, money will be collected for this before the first stop to fish. Watch your speed in the area, cops are watching. Boat has air conditioned cabin and leaves from Down The Hatch restaurant in Ponce Inlet. The crew will be tipped by the club, you can tip them for cleaning and filleting your fish, if you choose to. Continued on page 9

9 9 Kid s Clinic: Capt. Mike Vickers said for the past 8 years, the club has given back to the community by working with the FWC and working the kids clinic. Fish Florida is a special license plate that you can buy and the money for it goes towards buying rods and reels and small tackle boxes that the kids receive for free. Bring non-perishable food items to be given to the Bunnell Food Pantry. The kids go through a series of clinics with their parents and the parents also learn. Last year we had about 40 volunteers from our club and we need to get just as many or more this year. Also, last year, there were about 215 kids, at the end of the clinic, they get their rods, we give them bait and they go to the dock at Bings Landing and fish. They learn how to do cast netting, how to tie on a hook, how to cast and bait a hook, etc. This helps them become good stewards for the waterways. The clinic starts at 9 AM, volunteers please be there at 7 AM. There are flyers and posters at the back table, please pick some up and distribute them to friends, neighbors and put up the posters at any businesses that allow you to. Big Al s has donated and will cook hot dogs for the kids and any volunteer will get a hot dog and bag of chips. Age range is 5-15 years old and they do not have to be from Flagler County. Last year there was a Kona Ice Cream truck there, not sure if he will be there this year. Hank Alper explained the Kids Invitational Tournament to the members. It is the boat trip, on 7/29/17 at Bings Landing that kids who won a raffle get to attend, the boat captains from the club take a parent and a child out fishing for a catch and release ½ day event. We always need boat captain s, so notify Hank if you would be able to help out for this. When the kids get back from fishing, the club will serve them hot dogs or if there is still a ban burn in effect, a non-flammable meal, like PB&J. Guys & Gals Tournament: Chuck said the signup sheet is at the back table, sign up whether you fish or not, if you plan on eating, so he knows how many people to provide for. There will be great raffle prizes, an Engel live bait cooler, a soft sided cooler, a filet knife and some gift certificates, plus a show up bonus drawing and the team that decides to dress up will get judged by the crowd and win a $50.00 prize. Tim Lamb will provide entertainment. Tournament fishing starts at 7 AM and weigh in is at Herschel King Park from 2-3 PM, food will be served. Kayak Tournament: Bill May said this tournament will be held on 8/19, weigh in spot will be determined at a later date, but for now will be at Backwater Bait at High Bridge. He wanted us to know that his whole budget of $600 will be used for prizes. He will have one very nice raffle item, but is being secretive as to what this item is and he said he will have decent food. Kayaks can be rented from Max, he is at the meeting, please see him if you are interested, he has 12 kayaks for rent. You can use canoes, but no electric motors are to be used. He will have more information at our August meeting. Past Officers/Directors Presentation: Chuck told us that tonight was to honor past directors and officers. Among the honored were: past President/Chris Davy, Vice President/Bruce Bandes, Sgt. at Arms/Mike Brennan (absent) and his successor, Dean Roberts, and Directors Claire & Jim McIntire, Gene & Shay Morrow (absent), Emil Naeff, and Captain Jim Britton (absent). Break Guest Speaker: Capt. Billy Hunsicker, a captain with Endless Summer Charters based in St. Augustine. He has broken 13 world records and is on the Sunshine Network s Florida Fishing Report. He and his mate Cpt. Brian Holloway are this year s winners of the Conch House Marina s 6 th Annual Mahi Madness Tournament. With the Bottom Trip coming up in June, the Cpt. had good info for us all. He told us that bottom fishing is hard to figure out, what works for you may not work for everyone. He said you have to use circle hooks above the 20 th parallel. He showed us his Star rod and said he uses 100 lb main line, lb leader and uses a hook to match the bait size. Charter boats don t like braided line. Question was asked if the hurricane had affected his bottom spots and he said yes, of his spots are gone, what was there before the hurricane in many cases has disappeared. He told us if the current is hard to use a 3 way swivel rig and use a longer leader. Dusty Banks gave a shout out to Billy, he took a charter with him 3 wks ago and Dusty caught many fish and said Billy, was an excellent Capt. To catch mangrove snappers, he uses 80 lb test line, sardines or live minnows for bait with a sliding sinker rig. Let the snapper run with the line and hit the bait many times to take the hook. Chum and match the bait as your bait goes drifting down with the chum and you have a good chance to get a fish. For June & July, target mangrove snapper, chop up sardines and chum for them. Using your fish finder on the boat, always write down the spots of where you caught many fish. If you keep a hand written log book, you can go back years later and see what fish you caught. If this info is in a computer, you could lose that info. For targeting cobia, they like bigger structures, for pompano, stay up current from the spot they are in. Cpt. Billie offered to show us how to tie the mono rigs after the meeting and the equipment that he uses. Very good info! 50/50 Winner: Prize of $ was collected for the Disabled Vets of America. Tonight s winner, Mark Goodman, lived up to his last name and donated back $80.00 to the DAV. Thanks Mark! Meeting adjorned at 9:10 PM
