1 Sept-Oct Ocean City Marlin Club OFFICERS Franky Pettolina President Mark Radcliffe Vice President Annette Cropper Secretary Brian Tinkler Treasurer BOARD OF DIRECTORS Pat Svehla Ron Callis James Jefferson Val Lynch James Giles Mike Diffendal Bill Regan 9659 Golf Course Rd Ocean City, MD A Message from the President - I woke up this morning to frost on my car. Just 3 days ago I was looking at pictures of a mess of mahi that the Grande Pez caught the day before in the Baltimore. Confusing isn t it? Anyways, welcome to the October/end of fishing season Marlin Bill. The official fishing season ended on October 6 this year. I would like to congratulate everyone on yet another fantastic Marlin Club season. The marlin bite was a little off when compared to the past few years, but it was still quite respectable. Tuna fishing was spectacular and there were some huge wahoo caught. All things considered, 2013 was not too shabby!!! The 4 th annual White Marlin Party was held last Friday night and the Seasonal Awards Dinner was held the next evening. Friday was quite a show. For any of you who missed out on it, all I can say is get out there and catch 5 (or more) marlin next summer. Best party of the year!!! I would also like to congratulate all of the anglers and crews that won awards for the season. Every category was competitive, and some of them were not decided until the very last day of the season. One category deserves special recognition here, and that is the junior angler division. The younger anglers take this every bit as serious as the adults do, if not more so. I was so pleased to see the number of junior anglers present at the awards and also to have the privilege of chatting with their families after they accepted their awards. In the case of Gavin Zimmer, who won the 2 nd place Junior Angler, I first fished with his father Joe when I was just a bit younger that Gavin is now. The Zimmer family has a long history with the Marlin Club, and it is awesome to see it carrying on into another generation. Here is to the next generation, and Congratulations to the top 3 Junior Anglers- Connor Campbell, Gavin Zimmer, and Taylor McCart!!! I will also extend congratulations to Gregory Benn who, by definition, could still be a junior angler, but has chosen to compete with the adults. Gregory had an incredible season, coming in second in the Top Gentleman Angler Category and also catching a personal slam out of OC (at the age of 15!!!). Again, congrats to all of the winners. At the Seasonal Awards Dinner we also present the Edna Hodgens Award for Distinguished Service to the Marlin Club. This year s recipient is Evelyn Angel. Evelyn is a long time member of the Club and the Auxiliary. Her husband Max was president of the club in the early 80s. In the 70s and 80s many of the top captains and mates in this business looked to her for mothering during their formative years on Talbot Street and at the White Marlin Marina. More recently Evelyn has focused most of her time on the Auxiliary s Scholarship program. The scholarship would not be where it is today without her efforts. Thank you for everything Evelyn!!! Continued on next page.

2 A Message from the President (continued) The By-Law revisions were passed. I would like to thank the membership for the support, and also thank Val Lynch and the By-Laws committee for their hard work in the re-write. The changes made will help keep the club current and running smooth. Again, thank you. We are 2 weeks away from our general election. Annette Cropper and I are running unopposed, and we both thank you for your confidence and trust in us. And I openly thank Annette for all that she does. I encourage you all to speak with the Board Candidates, or ask your friends about them, and please vote accordingly. In closing this month I would like to thank everyone who came out and helped me celebrate my 40 th birthday. What a crazy group of fishermen, pirates, parrotheads, shotski and slammer drinkers, lifelong friends, brand new buddies, and of course my family!!!! I can t thank you enough. I love you gals and guys!!! Until Next Time. GO RAVENS (please!!!) and THINK FISH!!! 3 Fish News: This is a story 15 year old Junior Angler, Grant Clubb wrote about his experience of releasing the 1st White Marlin on his first offshore trip out of Ocean City in The day was Sunday, May 27, The time was 5:30 AM and we had just thrown Chain Reaction II s dock lines and were headed out of Sunset Marina. We cleared the inlet and my Dad pointed the bow towards the 180 line just North of the Poorman s Canyon where there was an eddy that was holding good numbers of yellowfin tuna. On board were just my dad, Brad, my brother Ross and myself. We arrived at our destination at about 8:00 AM and set our spread of skirted ballyhoo, artificial lures and spreader bars. Until about 11:40 AM, the day was fairly uneventful with just three dolphin placed in the fish box. Another dolphin had just impaled itself on the long shotgun skirted ballyhoo and my brother cranked him to the boat and I flipped him in. To avoid tangles we had cleared all the lines except for the left long, a triple green machine chain, and the left short, a Blue and Silver Hatteras Eye Catcher Outlaw with a medium ballyhoo. As Ross was dropping a skirted ballyhoo back into position something grabbed it. Expecting another dolphin, he immediately tried to set the hook and to our surprise a white marlin exploded out of the water throwing the bait out of its mouth about twenty feet to the right. Without thinking I quickly ran over to the only other bait still in the water, the left short, and as I was lifting the rod out of the holder when I heard the outrigger clip pop. I instinctively dropped the rod tip and put the reel in free spool. When the line coming off the reel gained speed and I the marlin had the bait. I engaged the drag and gave four hard, quick jabs and it was game on. The fight only lasted about five minutes and was rather uneventful, but the white did take a few nice jumps. Ross got the leader and grabbed the bill to hold the fish partially out of the water for a few quick pictures. I then cut the leader right at the crimp and we pulled the fish alongside the boat for a few moments to get some water through its gills before we set it free. At this point we received confirmation over the radio that this probably was the first white marlin caught this year out of Ocean City from the captains that were close enough to reach us. However, we were no sure what was going on up in the Wilmington Canyon, where there was also a nice eddy that was holding fish. We set the spread back out while still in awe at what had just taken place. At about 1:45 PM we had a nice boil on the short shotgun, a green machine spreader bar. A few more lines also went down but only one more stayed tight and the fight was on. Ross and I cleared a few lines before going to work on the two yellowfin tuna while my Dad ran up and down from the bridge to clear the remaining lines. My fish was on a fifty wide eighty pound class rod so it did not take me long to crank my fish to the boat. Ross leadered the tuna, dad came down and gaffed it, and we were on to the second fish. Ross had worked on the second fish while I was reeling in the first but, as I found out, the second fish was not quite done when and took off on another short run. Five minutes later Ross grabbed the leader and my Dad sunk the gaff to complete our doubleheader. We fished until 3:30 PM without another bite then decided to head for the barn. We arrived at the fuel dock at Sunset at about 6:00 PM and learned that we were the only ones that they were aware of that caught a white that day. The crew from the Coastal Fisherman came to take our pictures and confirmed that we had caught the First White of the Year out of Ocean City! I was also interviewed on video by Sunset Marina for their daily report. We were very appreciative of the several charter captains that waved or gave us thumbs up as they passed us in the marina. Catching the first white marlin is my greatest accomplishment as a fisherman to date and will always be something I am proud of. Grant Clubb us your fish tales & catch them in the Marlin Bill!!
