1 July 2009 Ocean City Marlin Club Board of Directors: Franky Pettolina, President Mark Radcliffe, Vice President Annette Cropper, Secretary Brian Tinkler, Treasurer BOARD OF DIRECTORS: Ron Callis James Jefferson Val Lynch Robby Paquette James Giles Bill Regan John Sippel A Message from the President Well folks, I know we are a little behind in getting the Marlin Bill to you this month, but after all it is fishing season. So lets get to it. We have had 2 successful tournaments, the first White Marlin and the first Blue Marlin have been caught, and fishing is in full swing since the last Bill went to press. I would first like to congratulate all of the winners in the Small Boat Tourney and the Canyon Kickoff. There was a great turnout for each event, and almost all of the feedback I have received has been positive. I would also like to thank our staff, the Auxiliary, and all of the volunteers that helped to make the tournaments a success. Congrats also go out to the crews of the Marlin Magic (first Blue caught in OC), Brother s Pride (first Blue caught by a club member), and last but definitely not least the crew of the Nontypical (first White). 2 Capt. Mike Bulkley sent in this photo from Zihuatanejo, Mexico. forgot to mention.. Coming in late 2009/ early 2010 just when you thought it was safe to go back into the Marlin Club watch out you don t get attacked Ok, Ok, Ok, enough of the drama from me.. Capt. Terry and Jim are donating the mount of the new state record Mako to be displayed at the club. It is truly an honor to have yet another state record on display at the club. Thanks Terry and Jim! As I am writing this the Kids Classic Tournament is almost upon us. A lot of work goes into this event, and countless hours are spent working to ensure its success. I am expecting a great turnout, and can t wait for the Carnival to come to our club. I would like to take the time now to thank all of the folks that have put in the effort to make this tournament the best it can be. Also, thanks go out to the OC Parrothead Club for their generous donation to the tournament. Following the Kids Classic by 2 weeks is going to be the OCMC 1 st Annual Ladies Tournament. Allison Sappington is the Director for this event, and she has quite a lineup in store for the ladies. I am especially excited to see how the Heels and Reels party is going to turnout- there may be some hungover Lady Anglers out there on day 2!!!! Speaking about the tournaments The White Marlin open will have come and gone by the time I write my article for the next Marlin Bill, so I will remind everyone now. WMO catch reports do not count for the OC Marlin Club. You must fill out a separate catch report (and remember all catch re- ports, with the exception of the Club Tournaments, must be filled out online) for your fish from the Open to count for seasonal awards. I looked back and saw that this was in the July Bill last year, but there was still some confusion, and a fish didn t get an award because of it. Make sure you fill out your club catch reports!! Mike, Shirley and the rest of our staff have been doing a great job of keeping up with the summer rush at the club. I know some nights are busier then others, but your patience is greatly appreciated when the staff is covered up! In closing this month I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to the Johnston family. Skip passed away shortly after the last Marlin Bill was written. He was a great man, and well liked by so many people. Please remember his family in your thoughts and prayers. Until August- I will see you all around the Club. Franky Pettolina Pictured above are this year s recipients of the Bertha Holloway Scholarship Fund for Stephen Decatur High School Students. Anthony Whaley, who will attend Salisbury University in the fall, and Lindsay Chetlate, who will attend the University of Delaware, each received $4,000. The funds were raised through the hard work of the Auxiliary fundraisers held throughout the year. Also pictured are Auxiliary members Dee Rigsby (center) and Evelyn Angel (right).

8 A Message from Joe Riley Fellow OCMC members, here is an update on what happened with me in Guatemala during the 2008 prime billfishing season, January thru April. I arrived at the end of January to do maintenance work on the 31 Hydra Cat I was to run and then start fishing. We got done everything that needed to get done - it took some doing in a third world country. The weather had been and continued to be unusually bad for Guatemala. That time of the year the seas are generally quite calm - rollers for the most part but never like it was in My first trip was with some of Bill Pino s group. Bill is an OCMC member and owner of Squidnation Products. We had seas of 2 to 4 with an occasional 5 footer and close. Weather was bad. I think that we went 2 for 3 or 4 and we all were happy to see the end of that day. My next charter was a group of fly fishermen from New York. Day one we raised 4 sails and did not catch any. Day two we again raised 4 and caught 1. Day three we raised 1 black marlin - caught - and 3 sails - 1 caught. Day four we raised 1 black and 4 sails and caught 2 sails. We thru a prop on the way back and it took a week to get a replacement. I was off for a week and had to transfer my charters to another boat. That group did OK catching several billfish a day but fishing was generally off. We did catch some 20 pound plus Mahi daily - made it to the table that evening, of course. I took an Edgewater, Md couple, Kim and Tim Miller, fishing for a couple of days on the Monkey Business. They had a grand time. They both caught their first Pacific Sail plus some Mahi. They were down for 4 nights and three days of fishing. We will be seeing them again in 2010 along with another couple. Paul and George Winter, Bill Dailey Sr and Jr and Kenny Navis came for a cluster of 9 days, fishing 6. The fishing was getting better and better by the day. We were using two boats, the Monkey Business and the Fat Cat. We would get some live bait in the AM just in case. Both boats had about the same number of fish raised and caught. I do not think that we raised less than 12 billfish per boat per day with several Mahi in the mix. Paul Winter did catch a 150 to 175 Black Marlin on the Fat Cat. The last day we fished each boat caught and released 20 sails and we probably raised 25 to 35 - not all were eaters. This is SLOW by Guatemala standards but it was fine with us as we had a wonderful 6 days. Some general numbers for my stay are Black Marlin, saw 4, all eaters, caught 2 - Sails, saw about 325, about 275 were eaters, caught I had developed a relationship with the owners of Buena Vista Sportfishing Lodge, Jody and Monte Elswick, over the last several years doing the various outdoor shows in the winter. We had worked out an arrangement to let me run one of their boats for the month of February to see how we each liked the arrangement. We did!!! I got a call from Jody several weeks ago asking me if I was familiar with the Jupiter 31. I was not. I looked it up and started asking around. I found out that it was a great fishing platform, fast and angler friendly. I went to see one and I was impressed with the ride, layout and fishability. Jody told me that he was in the process of purchasing one and if he did would I run it. I said "YES" I could in February and March in 2010 and perhaps more in 2011 depending on how the trips filled in. I am eagerly looking forward to the 2010 Guatemala fishing season and would like to encourage anyone that is interested in fishing with us to please give me a call at , my is tjoeriley@aol.com and you can check the lodge out on Captain Joe Riley 1270 Turkey Point Road Edgewater, MD
