Dave Birkett Ron Callis James Jefferson Val Lynch James Giles Bill Regan John Sippel 9659 Golf Course Rd Ocean City, MD A Message from the President - I know that I have been talking about it for the past couple of Marlin Bills, but I mean it this time. Spring has sprung and the boatyard is a buzzin. I can feel the blue water splashing on my face and hear the cry of, there he is on the dredge! It is almost upon us boys and girls. Diving right into business this month there are a couple of things that I feel need to be cleared up a little for the membership. The Marlin Club is not in the hall rental business. The club house facility is available for club members to rent, with certain guidelines. The Board of Directors came up with the rental policies because of the huge volume of rental requests that were received as soon as the new club house opened a handful of years ago. If every, scratch that, if most of the rental requests were accepted there would be rental functions at the clubhouse every night we are open. This would not be fair to the members as a whole. I am going to outline a few of the key items that seem to bring up the most confusion. 1. In order to rent the club a request must be made through the Club Administrator (Amanda Shick). This request is then sent to the Board of Directors for Approval. The bartenders, the kitchen staff, and Shirley are not involved in the decision making at this part of the process. 2. You must be a member of the club to rent the club house for a function. 3. The rental fee for the club begins at $500. It goes up depending on the number of people in the rental and the length of time. $500 is the minimum charge. (Amanda can provide all the details) 4. Friday and Saturday evening rentals are seldom approved. (There are exceptions, but each case is looked at on an individual basis). A large portion of our membership is only in town for the weekends, and we receive enough requests that there would be a rehearsal dinner, wedding or class reunion every weekend at the club. Would that be fair to the members? Afternoon rentals are an option on weekends. 5. The bar and restaurant are always open to members, no matter what function is going on. (During my wedding reception- which was held on a Saturday afternoon- there were several members that came in and enjoyed the bar). There is no exception to this other than club monthly dinners and tournament functions. I hope this clears up some of the issues with rentals. I cannot stress enough that we are not in the catering hall business. Nor do we wish to get into that business. The Ocean City Marlin Club is first, and foremost, a fishing club. The Pirate s of the Caribbean dinner is scheduled for this weekend (I like to think of it as the 2 nd annual Pirate Ball). I am looking forward to seeing all of the Buccaneers and Wenches in full pirate garb. This dinner was a blast last year and I am sure this year will surpass the inaugural event. Next on the list is the club s 75 th anniversary party on May 7 th. Amanda, Annette and Dee have been plotting big things for the party and I for one can t wait to be there and celebrate our club s anniversary.

2 A Message from the President - (continued) For those of you that are into the social network, be sure to check out the Ocean City Marlin Club Facebook page. We are going to work hard on keeping it updated with lots of pics and all of the club news and events. Feel free to post on the wall and put some fishing pictures on there. All I ask is that it stays within a PG rating. Fishing has been good over the past few weeks in lots of locales. The sailfish bite has been consistent in Costa Rica. I talked to Capt. Gary from the Pumpin Hard and he had a good couple of trips down there last week. The bluefin tuna bite has still been off the charts in Oregon Inlet, although the inlet itself has been a little more hairy than usual. If you head down there please be safe. And last, but not least, the daytime sword fishery in South Florida has been going strong. Susan McCart sent me some pictures of a pair of swordies caught aboard the Billfisher two weeks ago. Capt. Jonny estimated them at 100 and 250 pounds. Definitely nice fish. The Marlin Club has lost 2 of its own yet again recently. Doug May was a long time member of the club and was very well liked with a large circle of friends. He always supported the club and never missed a function. I did not know Doug well, but the love of his friends and family attests to the type of man he was. He will surely be missed. Amy Granville-Smith lost her battle with cancer this week. Amy was well known in the fishing circles while fishing with her husband aboard their boat, Phat Mann. She loved to fish and loved the lifestyle that went with it. On behalf of the club, I offer sincere condolences to both Amy and Doug s family and friends. Until next month, Franky Pettolina Save the date... 3 6 th annual OC Marlin Club NAUTICAL FLEA MARKET!!! On Saturday May 7 th we re having our 6 th Annual Nautical Flea Market in the parking lot of the Ocean City Marlin Club. It s time to spring clean get all that gear in order and sell what you don t want or use any more. You know you have rods, reels, anchors, line, and lures all kinds of nautical stuff just lying around. Why not sell it at the Flea Market and make a few dollars? For the past two years the spaces were sold out and everyone said they were successful in selling their stuff so sign up soon space is limited! The cost is $20 per space you set up one of your tables or throw out a couple of blankets or just put the stuff out in some boxes or on the ground whatever! Reserve now by calling: Tami or Mark Radcliffe *(Note you don t have to be a club member to rent a space)* The sale will begin at 8 and ends at noon so you need to be set up and ready to sell, and then to pack up anything you didn t get rid of and make the parking lot available for club parking. Let s get rid of all that STUFF so we can buy more!!

4 2nd Annual Island Time Fishing Festival The Fishing is Legendary..The party Never Ends. So read the banner at the 2nd Annual Island Time Fishing Festival at Isla Mujeres, Mexico, February 15-19th. And banners don t lie at least in this case. In two days of fishing 21 boats released 414 sailfish out of 786 bites, plus numerous wahoo, tuna, and dorado. But that s only part of the story. There s a reason it s called a festival rather than a tournament, and that reason is the high quality entertainment for all five nights and the money raised for charity. Here s a little history. Several Americans who now live on Isla Mujeres were thinking of how they could contribute to the betterment of their adopted home. The idea fermented, not unusual on Isla, into the concept of a fishing tournament where the fortunate could give back to the local community. The decision was made for the event to benefit The Little Yellow School House of Isla Mujeres. This is a non-profit school that assists special needs children and their parents. Then the second ingredient, entertainment, roared to life with several Nashville country music artists and executives offering to provide their services. Among those artists were singer/ songwriter Phil Vassar ( Just Another Day in Paradise ), Sony Music Executive Renee Bell, and Emmy Award winner Tim Nichols, among others who love the island life. Thus in February 2010 the first tournament was held and over $30,000 was raised for The Little Yellow School House. These funds allowed them to hire medical professionals and expand the facilities for these learning disabled kids. The vow was to make 2011 bigger and better, and it was. For example, the Captain s Meeting was held Tuesday evening with Phil Vassar entertaining for three straight hours. Wisely, Wednesday was a mandatory lay (read hangover recovery) day. Fishing days were 2 out of 3 starting Thursday, but in truth, with the entertainers and the party every night there were more than a few whose next day complexion matched the ocean. The bottom line is about $60,000 was donated this year and it s all because good people do good things to help others. I can t possibly name all those that contributed to the success of this event, but Jackie Walker and Mike LeFiles, owners of tournament headquarters, Jax Bar & Grill, worked tirelessly every day to see that the meals, entertainment, and awards went smoothly. Others donated items for the tournament buckets, or like OCMC Member Ron Laycock, who supplied at no cost all the t-shirts that were sold. Guitars signed by notable Nashville Artists like Brooks & Dunn and Kenny Chesney auctioned for thousands of dollars. All this went to The Little Yellow School House and hopefully some kids who haven t been dealt a very good hand in life will have a brighter future. It just makes me feel good about our sport and those who participate. 5 FW: Killer Whales off of Outer Banks Here are the photos of a very rare pod of orcas off of Oregon inlet yesterday! They normally do not come further south than Iceland. This pod was in behind the fishing fleet attacking blue fin tuna! There were a total of ten fish that were hooked up, that were taken by these huge killer whales. Captain said they were behind the boat like barracuda in the keys!!! In the last pic you can see the line coming from the boat to the bluefin tuna in the orcas mouth!!! 6 Myself, Brian Bowman, and Steve Sody went fishing Guatemala out of Casa Vieja Lodge. We fished with Ron Hamlin and for 3 days released a total of 33 sailfish, 27 on just the 1st day and a handful of dolphins. Three pictures from our trip are attached. This is our 3rd year at the lodge and as usual, the food was excellent and the personnel could not do enough for us. OCMC Member, David Barnes

9 MONTHLY RECIPE This is my all time favorite dip and beware, it s deadly you can t stop eating it. INGREDIENTS: 2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened 1 cup mayonnaise 1 (4 ounce) can chopped green chilies, drained 2 ounces canned, diced jalapeno peppers, drained 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese DIRECTIONS: Mix everything together. Pour mixture into baking dish. Cook for 30 minutes or until browned.
