1 PO Box Key Colony Beach, FL Jan-Feb 2014 Newsletter Next Meeting Friday February 7, pm Cocktails 6:30 Meeting City Hall Auditorium PLEASE REMEMBER TO WEAR YOUR NAME TAG KEY COLONY BEACH FISHING & BOATING CLUB JANUARY 3, 2014 MINUTES The January meeting of the Fishing & Boating Club was called to order on January 3, 2014 at 6:30 P.M. with the Pledge of Allegiance. Commodore Bill Knickman then stated the purpose of the Club which is to promote fishing, boating and good fellowship among all members. On behalf of the Executive Board, he wished everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year. The minutes of the December 6th meeting were accepted on a motion by Ken Duffy which was seconded by Norval Smith and passed by the members. A special thank you to Jerry Ellis and Lyn Paterson and their helpers for their efforts in making the New Year Eve s Party a success. The brunch will take place on Sunday, March 23rd at Little Palm Island at a total cost of $87.00 per person. 57 people have already signed up and paid. If you are interested please sign up tonight as seating is limited to approximately 60 people. Payment is due upon sign up. Director at Large Jerry Ellis reminded members of two other events that are being held in January Relay for Life on the 16th to benefit the American Cancer Society and the KCB Association Luau on the 18th. Fund Raising Director Tom Alferes asked for volunteers to help at this year s clambake. Please sign up at the end of the meeting. Skinny Water. Don Palmer stated that the fly fishing contest started on January 1 st. The winner of this year s Angler of the Year contest will receive a custom rod and reel. Also, please see Don or John Albin if you are interested in Project Healing Waters.
2 Tournament Director John Fruhmorgen was not able to attend the meeting so in his absence Commodore Bill Knickman presented the prize money to the following winning anglers: Glenn Baron, Darleen Cropper, Kerry Geaneas, Cindy Casey, Tom Casey, John Luciano, Ray Andro and John Tyson. The winners of the Marathon Marine & Boatyard Tournament were Tom Casey who took First Place, Geza Zoller in second place and John Luciano in third place. Once again Frank s Grill is sponsoring the Fish for Food Tournament in which all members can participate. Tom and Cindy Casey have a signup sheet for anyone interested in participating in the Fraternal Tournament this year. They are also looking for sponsors pledging anywhere from $ Please see them if you know of any organization that might want to be a sponsor. Also, please contact John Fruhmorgen if you have any items for the silent auction. Florida Air Conditioning is now sponsoring the Off Shore Tournament and Captain Hooks the Mackerel Tournament. You can find out more information about all the tournaments on the club s web site. Commodore Bill Knickman then addressed the meeting about the club s policy concerning the use of sponsor discounts. No one will receive the club discount at Captain Hooks or any other sponsor without showing their membership card with a current 2014 sticker as well as a photo ID. Our club depends on the generosity of our sponsors and we need their goodwill. It has come to my attention that some individuals have been taking advantage of our sponsors, particularly Captain Hooks. Therefore, I have instructed Captain Hooks not to give a discount to any member who does not produce a current membership card (with 2014 sticker) and photo ID. If any member is caught giving their membership card to anyone else they will lose their membership in the club. Also, any member who is disrespectful to any of our sponsors or their staff will also be subject to the loss of membership. Please see me if you have any questions. Commodore Bill Knickman reminded members that our big event the Clambake will take place as usual on President s Day, February 17th. Tickets will go on sale at the February meeting and in front of the Post Office on Saturday (Feb 8th and Feb 15th). Tickets for the Wheelbarrow of Cheer will also be on sale at that time. We need your help to make the clambake a success. Other news: Rene Warn is selling tickets for Casino Night (January 10th). Tickets are $25.00 (that includes full buffet dinner, open bar, and $25 in chips). Proceeds go to the Shriner s Hospital. Joe Schmidt informed the group that Wounded Warriors will be at the Marathon Firehouse next Saturday and will be going by on the Causeway. Please support them. Sue Redding reminded everyone that she is providing free boat safety checks.
3 We need more members to help furnish the fish for the clambake. Please contact John Tyson ( ) if you can help. To date John has received only 20 pounds of fish and our goal is approximately 200 pounds. A reminder that tonight is the last opportunity to pay your 2014 dues. If you paid your dues and need a sticker, see Dee Settles. The Captain Hooks Appreciation Party for the club has been rescheduled to February 4th at 4:pm at Captain Hooks. There were three guest speakers at the meeting. Danise from Captain Hooks. The Mackerel Tournament will run from the 1st to the 31st. The winner will be the angler who catches the fish that weighs in at the highest percentage of the state record. John & Larry & John from Florida Air Conditioning. They described in general the services offered by Florida Air and informed club members that they will receive a 10% discount on all services. They then thanked all Florida Air employees and family who were helping with the food service. Mike Kennedy, Vice President of the Coastal Conservation Association (CAA). The CAA is an advocacy organization that protects the rights of recreational fishermen. Mike gave a brief presentation of the threats to recreational fishing as we know it in the Florida Keys. Biscayne is already a no fish zone with a lottery for the right to fish there. The CAA is endeavoring to fight the proposed no fish zones and support local recreational fishermen. Membership in the CAA is $ If you are interested in joining, please see the CCA website ( Other business: John DeNeale reminded members that there will be a meeting of all Clambake Captains on January 17th at 4:00pm at City Hall. Members of the Executive Board will also be present. Please see Tom Alferes if you can help with the barracuda races since more volunteers are needed. A motion to adjourn was made by Corky Spehrley and seconded by Joe Schmidt. The winner of the 50/50 was Leslie Ryder. Remember to visit our web site for information and events.
4 FROM THE DESK OF THE COMMODORE Our 2014 Clambake is only a few weeks away. This year we are adding live music to the event with the excellent band of Rick and Dana. Tickets go on sale at the Friday, February 7th regular meeting. We will also be selling tickets on Saturday February 8th, Friday February 14th, and Saturday February 15th. Tickets remain $15.00 for members, $25.00 for non-members. Just a reminder, everyone who attends must have a ticket. This includes workers. This is the only way we can continue to offer this great price year after year. Centennial Bank will also be serving hot dogs and we are adding back waffle fries this year. We will be utilizing wrist bans again as tickets. Please do not lose or forget your wristbands. There will be a huge silent auction hosted by John and Carol Fruhmorgen at the Clambake. All revenue from the silent auction is donated by the club to local charities. If anyone has anything of value for the silent auction, please contact John and Carol at (813) We are all saddened by the passing of long time member Clyde Burnett. Clyde will be missed and our condolences go out to his friends and family. Wheelbarrow of Cheer tickets will also be on sale at the February meeting and again on the same days we are selling Clambake tickets. If anyone has fish fillets for the Clambake, please arrange to get them to John Tyson so we can determine how much fish we have. We still are in need of more fish for the Clambake, so please help us out by donating some of your catch. Any amount will be appreciated. You can contact John at (305) or john@bluerunnerfishing.com The Past Commodore s Miami Boat trip has been cancelled. Refunds are available from Treasurer Chick Lees. If you are a Clambake Captain and need volunteers to help your crew, please contact Tom Alferes at (508) or nowpacking@comcast.net. If you need servers, please contact Lyn Patterson at (305) Since we are now tracking the volunteers, if you have volunteered, please make sure your Clambake Captain makes a note of this and if you have volunteered for another event or task, please contact Tom Alferes to make a record of your involvement. All members must volunteer at least every other year and all new members must volunteer during their first year of membership. Hope to see you all at the February 7th meeting, Commodore Bill Knickman
