3 What is the NJ CLUB INTERNSHIP PROGRAM? The NJ Club Internship Program is a program developed by the New Jersey Club Managers Association to link students who attend a four-year University Hotel and Restaurant Management Program with New Jersey Clubs and Club Managers for purposes of potential internship and employment opportunities. Overview The Club Managers Association of America (CMAA) is the professional Association for managers of membership clubs. CMAA has close to 7,000 members who manage more than 3,000 country, city, athletic, faculty, yacht, town and military clubs. The objectives of the Association are to promote and advance friendly relations among persons connected with the management of clubs and other associations of similar character; to encourage the education and advancement of its members; to assist club officers and members, through their managers, to secure the utmost in efficient and successful operations. The Association s Club Foundation supports the advancement of the club management profession. The Club Foundation sponsors research, funds industry education programs, provides financial assistance to educational institutions and awards scholarships to outstanding students interested in the club management profession. CMAA s budget is $8.5 million. The staff numbers 40. There are 46 senior chapters, 45 student chapters and colonies, both in the United States and abroad. Member Club Facts and Figures Club Type and Location 80 percent of CMAA members clubs are golf and country clubs. 11 percent of CMAA members clubs are city clubs. 4 percent of CMAA members clubs are yacht clubs. 71 percent are IRS classified tax-exempt-501(c)(7) organizations. Club Income Gross revenues more than $13 billion annually. Food and beverage revenues equal $3.8 billion. The average club income is $5.5 million. Club Employees Clubs employ more than 290,749 employees. Club payrolls equal just over $5.3 billion. Club Outreach Programs Clubs raise more than $385 million for charities. Clubs raise more than $7 million in student scholarships. Most of CMAA s 46 chapters sponsor scholarship funds. Economic Impact of Clubs The average club spends $2.79 million in the local community. The average club spends $2.9 million within the state as a whole. Clubs as a whole paid $351 million in real-estate taxes, $708 million in payroll taxes, $528 million in sales taxes and $218 million in other taxes (i.e., liquor, excise, occupancy and school). 2

4 Association Services Professional Development CMAA conducts more than 100 national educational programs annually. CMAA chapters also offer more than 400 local or regional professional development programs yearly. Certified Club Manager (CCM): The CCM designation is known as the hallmark of professionalism in club management. It is a valuable and widely respected mark of a manager s commitment to professional development and the club industry. Certified Chief Executive (CCE): The CCE designation was developed to recognize managers who have shown the ability to successfully serve as the most senior manager in a club. While the CCM designation is still the hallmark of professionalism within the club industry, the CCE designation is meant to augment the CCM designation, not replace it. Master Club Manager (MCM): The MCM designation is a certification and recognition program for a special group of professionals who have made extraordinary and long-lasting contributions to the club industry. Student Membership and Development Undergraduate and/or graduate hospitality management majors enrolled in four-year accredited colleges or universities are eligible to apply for a CMAA student membership. CMAA recognizes its responsibility to assist students in gaining a better understanding of the club management profession and in selecting a career in this sector of the hospitality industry. There are currently 45 CMAA student chapters and colonies and more than 1,200 student members. The association affords Managers superb educational opportunities through local, regional, and national seminars and courses. In addition, Business Management programs have been established with the following universities: Cornell, Michigan State, University of Nevada at Las Vegas, California Polytechnic University and Georgia State University, to name a few. In addition, CMAA has established one of the most comprehensive certification programs of any profession. The Certified Club Manager (CCM) designation is the hallmark of success for Club Managers to achieve. In addition, and for the select few, a Master Club Manager designation has been established as the pinnacle of professional achievement for a Club Manager. Annually, the association conducts its conference in a major city within the United States. The world Conference on Club Management and Golf Industry Show is the Association s most visible event of the year. Over the past several years, audiences of nearly 5,000 have attended CMAA s conference and show, which is held in major cities throughout the United States. Members truly benefit from the variety of opportunities available at the World Conference, which includes more than 90 education programs with much hands-on advice that can be easily put into practice. The New Jersey Club Managers Association, a chapter of the Club Managers Association of America, has developed a program to facilitate 3

5 the process for students to meet Club Managers and vice versa through a program entitled NJ Club Internship Program. The Clubs and Club Managers within New Jersey wanted to create a vehicle to attract and retain hospitality management students who were seriously interested in both employment at a private Club and/or interested in a career in the Club Management profession. NJ Club Internship Program meets these objectives. What Does the NJ Club Internship Program Offer? There are several opportunities and benefits that accrue through the NJ Club Internship Program. These include: Opportunities to meet Club Managers and discuss possible employment within the individual Club or the Club Management Industry. Intern Program opportunities within individual Clubs. Scholarships. How Do We Get to Meet Club Managers? There are several ways to meet Club Managers. These include the following: Involvement in your University s Student Chapter of Club Managers Association of America. Club Managers are frequent guest speakers and lecturers at Hospitality Management schools. Career Days at Universities with Hospitality Management Programs. Through a link at the NJ Club Internship Program, listed in the appendix of this brochure, is a list of Clubs in the New Jersey Chapter who currently participate in this program and would like to hear from you. The Managers of these Clubs realize that summer and full- time employment of students is only realistic if the students live in close proximity to the Club. Some Clubs have housing facilities available. Employment at a Club or participation in a Club Intern Program. Complete a NJ Club Internship Program application and send it to the Club where you would like to work. How Does the Intern Program Work? Several Clubs in New Jersey offer Intern Programs. Each is structured by the individual Manager to provide students with an opportunity to get exposed to multiple facets of Club Management. Internships come in all shapes and forms in the club management profession. To give some parameters and guidance to club managers and students alike, please consider the following types of internships. Level 1: Position of Experience Based Internship. This is an internship where a student is assigned to a basic club job or staff position but is also oriented to a club s culture, tradition and its operations. Usually a short orientation starts the experience and then the student intern is trained in the position and occupies it for a set time period. Good examples of position internships might include: receptionist, wait staff, an activity staffer in a summer children s or youth program or beverage cart attendant. Level 2: Rotational Internship. This is an internship where a student rotates through the various departments in the club, which includes one 4

6 week in each departmental area, such as: clubhouse dining, culinary operations, golf shop operations, golf and tournament management, pool operations, club accounting and financial reporting, grounds and turf management, membership marketing and services, clubhouse event planning and other areas of club operations specific to your club. Student interns would typically rotate through these club departments and then settle into a specific area for a more in-depth orientation and provide service to the club in the second portion of the internship. These are highly rewarding internships for both the club and the student. This type of internship would typically be engaged in at the second level or during the second or third summer of a four-year program. In some colleges, this is the only type of internship that is considered a true internship experience and may be the only one accredited by the college. Academic credit and special project status may be assigned to this type of internship. Level 3: Leadership Internship. This is an internship where a student operates a revenue center for the club and is highly responsible for staffing and providing all operational guidance or leadership in managing this area. This might include the operation of a poolside cafe or operating the cabaña venues at a beach club or running the snack bar on the golf course. This internship is typically considered a third level and is performed during the third or final summer of a college student s four-year program. Candidates seeking this internship are highly experienced students who are ready and able to take on a leadership role and are able to assume full responsibility of an operational area. Academic credit may be earned and a summary report of the experience can be expected. Tell Me About The Scholarships That Are Available The New Jersey Club Managers Association has developed a scholarship program in an attempt to recognize students who have demonstrated a sincere desire through their actions to pursue a career in Club Management. The criteria for scholarships are as follows: Active membership and participation in the CMAA Student chapter at their college or university. Proof of part-time or full-time work, or an internship for a minimum of 300 hours at a club located in New Jersey belonging to the National Club Manager s Association (CMAA) in the immediate past 12 months. Demonstrate academic achievement with a minimum GPA of 2.25 on a 4.0 scale. Freshmen and Sophomores must be taking or have completed an introductory course in hospitality. Juniors and Seniors must be taking or have completed a 3-credit course dedicated to Club Management. Successful completion of one semester in a 4-year Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management program. A letter of recommendation from a New Jersey Club Manager. How Do I Apply for the Scholarship? Each academic year, the New Jersey Club Foundation may award up to four scholarships in the amount of $3,000 or more (based on the availability of 5

7 funds and merit of applications). Individuals selected may compete and be selected in subsequent years for these scholarships. Students who wish to compete for the scholarships should complete the enclosed application and return it by October 1st. The scholarships will be awarded at our Annual Meeting in November to the individual(s) who in the opinion of the Selection Committee are the best qualified applicants. The Clubhouse has a formal dining room seating 150, a mixed grill seating 60, and a men s grill seating 60, along with two private meeting rooms and a beautiful tavern. The Club is in excellent financial condition, with annual revenues exceeding $6 million. Food and beverage sales total $2.2 million. Manasquan River Golf Club has a very active golf and social membership and would provide an excellent opportunity for a training ground in all aspects of the business. The golf course, designed by Robert White, is considered one of the most unique and picturesque in the state, with 12 holes resembling a parklandstyle course with tree-lined rolling hills and the other six holes located along the Manasquan River, being flat like a links-style course. The course is currently undergoing a long-range plan to preserve the original design and improve the bunkers and tees. Founded in 1898, this club has a low-key, yet prestigious membership of 450 families. The 18-hole golf course, designed by A. W. Tillinghast, is a top-100 golf course in the United Sates and the world. The club is also one of the few in New Jersey that offer grass tennis courts. The clubhouse serves meals six days a week in the formal dining room (seating 100), terrace (seating 90), and grill room (seating 30). In addition, the club hosts private affairs and charity golf outings. Somerset Hills Country Club offers a unique interning opportunity as it is small, hands-on, and permits a broad range of exposure to all aspects of private club operations. Interns are encouraged to gain experience in, and rotate through, all departments. Interns are welcome to participate over a two- or three-year period, as responsibilities expand each year. Internships and Positions Available Intern Level 1 (the student with minimal background in hospitality in a club setting): Program will include front-of-house service, kitchen prep and expediting, housekeeping, bartending, golf course and tennis refreshments, event planning, supervising junior camp lunch, F&B inventories, office assist, and sales in the golf and tennis professional shops. Intern Level 2 (the student with more extensive hospitality experience and some supervisory experience): Working closely with the Clubhouse Manager and Assistant Manager, this person will be involved in scheduling, training and supervising waitstaff. 35 NEW JERSEY CLUB FOUNDATION STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM The New Jersey Club Foundation has developed a scholarship program in an attempt to recognize students who have demonstrated a sincere desire through their actions to pursue a career in Club Management. SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS Each academic year, The New Jersey Club Foundation may award up to four scholarships in the amount of $3,000 or more (based on the availability of funds and merit of applications). Scholarship awards will be made at the recommendation of Selection Committee and approval of The New Jersey Club Foundation Board. The scholarship award will be made in November at the NJCMA Annual Meeting. WHO SHOULD APPLY? Any student who is actively seeking a career in the private club industry and is currently attending an accredited, four-year College or University, may apply. CRITERIA 1. Active membership and participation in the CMAA Student chapter at their college or university. 2. Proof of part-time or full-time work, or an internship for a minimum of 300 hours at a club located in New Jersey belonging to the National Club Manager s Association (CMAA) in the immediate past 12 months. 3. Demonstrate academic achievement with a minimum GPA of 2.25 on a 4.0 scale. 4. Freshmen and Sophomores must be taking or have completed an introductory course in hospitality. Juniors and Seniors must be taking or have completed a 3-credit course dedicated to Club Management. 5. Successful completion of one semester in a 4-year Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management program.
