Caloundra Cooee 1 Charles Woodward Drive Caloundra 4551 Telephone:(07) Fax: (07) admin@caloundragolf.com.au Website: August 2017 PRESIDENT S REPORT The application period for the position of club professional has finished with 34 applying for the position from as far as the USA, New Zealand and right across Australia. We have meticulously gone through every application and resume and have shortlisted six for the interview process. Our intention is to complete this process by the first week in September. Once we have selected the new professional we anticipate there will be a transition period in the Pro Shop around late December to early January and completed by the end of the first week in January. We have been pleased with the quality of applications we received, showing how highly our club is prized and sought after. Jim Burns President Inside this Issue: Treasurers Report pg 2 Greens Report pg 3 Mens Match pg 5 Ladies Match pg 7 The Veterans Voice pg 13 The club has purchased a new fairway mower at a cost of $81,000 this machine has state of the art cutting heads which will cut the contours in our fairways better and with technology to decrease the amount of grass clumps left after mowing. As normal this machine was paid for with our own funds. The new drainage on the 14th fairway has been completed this will improve this wet part of our course. As the growing season approaches we will concentrate on removing the bare patches on some of our fairways. This process would be helped if buggy drivers would refrain from driving over these areas and exercise caution wherever new turf has been laid throughout the course. Jim Burns Please note - You can now put money or trophy vouchers won on your member account to purchase food and beverages from the Drinks Cart and Bar. Please see our friendly office staff to organise it for you. It is a very simple process. 1

TREASURERS REPORT The Annual Report should be available in a few weeks (naturally before the AGM) and, of course, we have again returned a profit, albeit less than the previous year of 2015/16. Once the Auditors have finished, I will advise details in my Annual Report for the AGM. David Valen ne Treasurer July has started well with Gross Trading Profit above Budget by $4,000. Annual Subs are slightly down on Budget but slightly up on last year. Other items are up and down with the bottom line of 'Other Income' almost the same as last year. Expenditure is up $12,000 on last year but $16,000 below Budget. All in all we are operating better than Budget but as I have stated in the past, one month's figures mean very little. I am aware that some members have a problem in paying their Annual Fees each June. Why not pay into your account during the year your winning vouchers (I should be so lucky) or when you have a spare $50 or $100 so that when June 2018 arrives, your Subs will be greatly reduced thus avoiding the struggle. DAVID VALENTINE TREASURER WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS Gary Bretz Felix Hill Oskar Hill Brady Mann 2

GREENS REPORT The weather in July and early August has been very dry, with only 28mm falling in July and only 13mm so far in August. This is not that unusual at this time of year, as August/September is normally our driest months. So far this year we have registered 800mm of rain which is about average for us, although if cyclone Debbie didn t drop over 200mm of rain on us in March the rain fall would have been well under average. Wayne Anderson Greens Superintendent The work that has been going on to the right of the 14 th fairway is drainage work. A lot of water comes from the 13 th fairway area and runs across the 14 th fairway. The pit that has been installed will catch most of that water and take it across to the existing pipe in the 14 th fairway, then ultimately into the burn across the 10 th fairway. Catching the majority of the water before it crosses the 14 th fairway will see the low area in the fairway dry out a lot quicker in wet weather. Once this work has settled down we will then assess whether we need to install sub surface drainage as well. The extension to the 11 th tee is finished now and we are just waiting for the grass to take hold before bringing it into play. The project we are working on at present is the realignment of the path between the 10 th and 14 th greens. The major projects we are looking to complete before the growing season is in full swing are - Subsurface drainage installed in the gully in front of the 17 th green. Subsurface drainage installed in the wet area in front of the 5 th green. Rebuild or redrain bunkers, such as back of 11 th, back right of 12 th, back right of 4 th, back of 8 th green and front of the 11 th green. Install wiring to new irrigation banks on the 8 th fairway. Construct Tif nursery beside the men s 3 rd tee. 3

GREENS REPORT We have been busy over the past couple of months completing small maintenance jobs that we just don t get time for during the growing season. Some of these small jobs are - Wayne Anderson Greens Superintendent Repair three washouts in edge of dams at 3 and 6. Install new drinking fountain at 3 rd tee. Repair drainage pits at 1 st, 5 th and 6 th fairways. Install grass protection mats at entrances to bridges on holes 3, 10, 13 and 17. Install new seats on holes 9 and 1. Sow seed into poor areas on holes 12,13 and 17. Trim edge of most paths around course. Remove stumps around course. This work is ongoing. Install quick coupling valves around course to make it easier to get irrigation to poor areas that are not covered by pop up irrigation. Topping up mulch in gardens. Repairs to both bridges on the 4 th. Lastly a big thank you to all of our regular volunteers who work their backsides off every week. Without their efforts this course would not be in the great condition that it is. Our volunteers do jobs such as mowing roughs, spraying weeds, trimming trees, spreading mulch, maintaining gardens, edging paths and topdressing areas. Nothing is too much effort for these guys so thank you very much. Wayne Anderson. 5 MENS MATCH REPORT Russell Michael Men s Captain With the 8 minute gaps on Monday, Friday and Saturday on our time sheets, the fields are moving at a steady pace but often we still seem to get a hold up on our par three's especially on stroke days. It doesn't help with having a par 3 for the second hole on each nine. Unfortunately with the size of our fields on Wednesday's, we have to stay at 7 minute intervals during the winter months to accommodate all members. We don't have compulsory call ups on par 3's, as there is no advantage for the fields to move any faster, as then you would have to wait on the next hole. Sometimes in the afternoon's with fading light on our ninth, you are allowed to voluntary call up for everyone to finish. There is nothing to say you can't voluntary call up during the day but then the problem of groups waiting goes to the next tee. It is not difficult to get in a pickle on any holes when you go from bunker to bunker around the greens but most members believe that could be me one day and accept it. Most are aware if this happens to a mate then the group will need to catch up to the group in front of them. When this happens we get a backlog of groups on certain holes. I am seeing a small minority of members walking down the face of bunkers to get to their ball and walking out the same way leaving the handle of the rake pointing towards the sky for someone else to use as a target as they have used it as a climbing implement. There have been times when I have brought it to the attention of my group that some inconsiderate person in front of us has left footprints down the face of the bunker and walked out then, the way they should at the lowest point. Some members believe if I had to play out of a footprint then those behind me can do the same, this is why I want more members to be more considerate for others and, for the life of me I cannot understand why some members have their shot and walk out dragging the rake behind them hoping it will cover the footprints they have left and have scant regard where they leave the rake. Their reason is, I am trying to follow your guidelines for pace of play which doesn't gel, all it shows is your lack consideration for anyone else. If you are playing with someone like this bring it to their attention in a nice way so that they don't do it again. If you don't take it on board, you will find that no one will want to play with you. Around tee's and green's, golf buggies are to remain on cart paths always. There are a few members that have medical certificates to help them get closer to the green to play their shot but their limit is no closer that 5 meters. What they aren't allowed to do is drive through wet or damp areas around greens to get to play their shot or anywhere else, it is only for the hole they are playing and nowhere else. The same penalties will apply to those members as to everyone else, with a warning letter and if there is a next time, disciplinary action will be taken. The playoff for our Patron's Cup was to be held on the 12th Aug between John Nibbs and Wade Krechting, but John had to forfeit for family reasons and Wade was presented with the Patron's Cup. 5

MENS MATCH REPORT Russell Michael Men s Captain A little known rule was brought to light during our recent Club Championships and unfortunately the Match Committee had no choice but to disqualify several players for breaching this rule. It is never pleasant for us to have to enforce these rules in this way, but we also cannot overrule a rule of golf. Rule 6-3b reads: In stroke play, the competitor must remain throughout the round in the group arranged by the Committee, unless the Committee authorises or ratifies a change. PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE 6-3b: Disqualification. Only start playing when your group is called to the tee, don't take it upon yourselves that the group in front of you are out of range and hit. By waiting till you are called, this should alleviate getting so many groups waiting on the next hole especially during stroke rounds. On occasions, the first groups in the fields have a tendency to start before their allocated time saying what's the matter in starting a bit earlier, we get to finish a bit earlier. If anyone starts before their allocated time they will be disqualified. This applies to all men's competitions (Monday Club), Wednesday's, Vet's on Friday's and Saturdays. Men's Captain Russ Michael. 6

Puzzle Page PUZZLE PAGE SUDOKU SQUARE TRIVIA TIME Using only digits 1 to 9, just once each, how can you make three numbers, each of three digits, where the second number is twice the first number and the third number is three times the first number? JUST FOR A LAUGH Jerry was in the hospital recovering from surgery when a nurse asks him how he is feeling. I m OK but I didn t like the four-le er-word the doctor used in surgery, he answered. What did he say, asked the nurse. OOPS! A fellow walked into a bank in New York City asking for a loan for $4000 dollars. Well, before we lend you the money we are going to need some kind of security the bank teller said. No problem the man responded here are the keys to my car you ll see it, it s a black Porsche parked in the back of the parking lot. A few weeks later the man returned to pay off his loan. While he was paying it up, along with the interest of $11 dollars, the manager came over, sir, we are very happy to have you re business, but if you don t mind me asking, a er you le we looked into you and found out that you are a millionaire, why would you need to borrow $4000 dollars? Well, the fellow responded it s quite simple, where else can I park my car for three weeks in New York for $11 dollars? 13 VETERANS VOICE President s Say Welcome to new members, Rod Robertson, Darren Davies and Russell Schroder. If you have any questions please contact any committee member or myself. Our visit to Nambour is covered elsewhere so I will only add that ball run down went to 35 points. Just a reminder that on Monday August 28 we have our District Veterans Carnival played at Mt Coolum. This event is played in four divisions with stroke in Div.1 and Stableford in Div.2, three and four and there are some great prizes on offer. We d like to see a good representation from Caloundra the largest Club on the Sunshine Coast. On September 1 & 8 our Veterans Championships are played and details are on our notice board. If you are unable to play in the two rounds you can still play in the comp of the day competition. Please lock in Tuesday September 5 when we travel to Tin Can Bay. We will have a coach that can take 40 golfers. See Brian Benson to book a seat on the coach. We still have a number of members out of action and from all our Veterans we wish you a speedy recovery. Keep on Playing Golf as long as you can. John 13

VETERANS VOICE Cont Nambour Away Game The very best people live in Nambour and the best of them are golfers, which is why our visits to this course are always enjoyable, fitness improving and educational to golfers used to playing on flat boring terrain. Here, talking about the ups and downs of golf is not metaphoric but truly literal. Given the weather of late, the course is in great condition and the greens are the best they ve ever been. Congratulations to the new greenkeeper. This old scribbler braved the course and called for Tensing to pass the oxygen on only two holes, the 7th and the 18th come to mind. We flatlanders had some success it must be said. Brendan Furley blitzed Division 2 with 43 points! Has he climbed the Matterhorn more than once? Phil Gardiner managed to keep a ball on the 6th to win NTP and Geoff Corbett mastered the beautiful 10th. If we had snow, this hole would make a great jump. Only two Caloundra men featured in the ball run down - Matthew McKiernan (36) and the in form Lord of Culloden, George McCarthy (35). Brendan, our hero, hides modestly beneath his hat. Norm Smith Trophy I get quite excited looking at these results each month. (It doesn t take much and beats watching plants grow.) We have some jostling for position as we enter the final stages. George, who has reigned supreme for far too long, has been knocked off by an old champ, John Bryan (36.9), who has jumped from 4th place to the lead. Chris Webb has tired and slipped back to 6th place - just gathering strength for the hill climb I should think. And what about that dark moustachioed horse, Geoff Stephen - 13th up to equal 2nd! Enough raving - here s the results down to John Bryan (36.9), George McCarthy (36.7), Geoff Stephen (36.7), John Morison (36.5), Stanley Crook (36.1), Chris Webb (36.1), Lyle Higgins (36), Ian Broom, Dugald Clark, Keith Courts all (35.8), John McPherson (35.7), Nick Gedig, Ron James and Ian Sharman all (35.6}, Richard McKenzie and Bob Wood (35.4) Anthony Brangwin, Phil Gardiner and Terry Watson all on Common use of range finders illustrated above. Age Takes its Toll I can t mention this Vet s name he s a bit sensitive but the other day he provided a classic example of failing memory. Well into the round he started patting pockets and muttering darkly. His keys are missing. A phone call to Jacob in the Pro Shop rescues them from his locker door. Having enjoyed after game drinks, our hero started frantically patting pockets again. Sure enough the precious keys are again in locker door this time with door left open. Covered in shame and ridicule, he walks to his car which is parked as far away from the club house as possible. As he bends to get into the car he feels something in his hip pocket. He hasn t put the cards in! If you know this fellow, do be gentle with him and give him all the assistance you can. 14
