Caloundra Cooee 1 Charles Woodward Drive Caloundra 4551 Telephone:(07) Fax: (07) admin@caloundragolf.com.au Website: February 2017 PRESIDENT S REPORT Having just been through the longest dry spell in a very long time it has prompted us to revisit our dam system and to look into increasing our storage capacity. We will investigate extending the large dam on the 3rd back towards the bridge between the 2nd and 3rd. This could increase our holding capacity by another 10 million litres. The largest possible amount of water storage on our golf course is essential and an investment for the future. Renovations of the old workers bar area, near the rear exit, have commenced. The area will be transformed into a kitchenette where we will be able to offer various hot foods to all members and visitors whenever the bar is open. Jim Burns President Inside this Issue: Treasurers Report pg 2 Greens Report pg 3 Mens Match pg 4 Ladies Match pg 6 The Veterans Voice pg 11 There have been a couple of complaints about items going missing from golf bags around the club. All instances should be reported immediately and if you have any information please talk to Jason ASAP. We have recently installed CCTV around club and hopefully, moving forward, this will deter any would be thieves. On a positive note, the greens renovations have been completed with the help of volunteers. Our Tuesday volunteers have gained a few new members which is great! The more the better. Thank you all for your time and efforts. Welcome to our new members Isaac Cavanagh Jonathan Drechsler Noel Gneiding Nic Gray Ryan Hadland Tony Valli Tulio Rojas 1

TREASURERS REPORT Last month I wished everyone a Happy New Year. Unfortunately your club did not have a happy January in relation to profitability as we went backwards by just under $23,000. As I have reported many times, any one month does not necessarily tell the big picture, only the annual result is what counts. So why did we lose? David Valen ne Treasurer Competition Green Fees were down by over $4,000 due to a very hot January causing loss of players in the main fields of Wednesday and Saturday. Bar Sales were down because of the same reason i.e. loss of players. January was a 5-pay month i.e. an extra $14,000 to $15,000 in wages. No functions in January, plus paying some food bills for events held in December. Electricity bill for clubhouse $7,800. Irrigation system maintenance $2,700. One of the Toro Mowers - Repairs and Maintenance $2,100 A lot of the above was budgeted for so we knew January would not be great. So far as year-to-date goes, we are still ahead of budget with an overall profit of $84,000 so there is no doom and gloom. You will note bar prices have increased from the beginning of February in keeping with normal practices. The manufacturers/wholesalers increase the price each August and February. We generally absorb the August increase and only apply a small increase in February. Please note that, in future, there will be a small surcharge for EFTPOS use under $15 as the charge we encounter from the bank cancels the profit on small transactions. Another big thank you once again to our President Jim Burns for renovating the old workers bar in preparation for our new kitchenette area. This has again saved the club several thousand dollars in labour costs. DAVID VALENTINE 2

GREENS REPORT The hot dry weather seems to be going on forever. We did have a bit of respite recently with 25mm of rain being dumped on the course which almost filled all our dams. Considering how low our dams were, that rain could not have come at a better time. The fairways have suffered this time with some of them not looking great. We have enough water now to continue our normal watering program and as soon as we get some follow up rain we will look to fertilise the fairways to help them recover. Wayne Anderson Greens Superintendent All it took to break the drought was to start greens renovations. Rain interferes with our renovations most times and this time was no different. We don t need heavy rain when the greens have been heavily sanded, as the rain can wash the sand up in piles and it can take ages to get the greens smooth again. Our summer greens renovations went smoothly thanks mainly to our band of hard working volunteers. Without their help we could not do the amount of work that is required to renovate the greens. The big dam on three has always had a small leak into the small dam on the 3 rd hole. When the water was down in the large dam recently we had a go at stopping the leak. This was successful to a degree. The water leaking through the dam wall has slowed significantly with only a couple of small leaks remaining. I intend to persevere and do my best to stop the leaks completely. We are in the process of replacing the permanent markers on the tees. The old and broken pavers are being replaced with new plastic discs with distances on them and they look very smart. 4 MENS MATCH REPORT Russell Michael Men s Captain With the size of our fields, everyone should be keeping up to the group in front of them. There will be times when you have to look for a lost ball, but you then have to catch back up to the group in front of you. There may come a time when you have trouble with a buggy, possibly a flat tyre and you have to call the pro shop to get another buggy, this all takes time so keep calling the groups behind through, that is if your playing partners are prepared to wait with you. Most just excuse themselves from the game as this procedure could take 30 mins to complete and is unfair on the rest of the group. Gone are the days when a game of golf takes 4 hours, because with two tee starts with both the morning and afternoon fields at capacity. The golf balls are harder to pick up with the dry conditions we are experiencing. The degree of difficultly on the ninth and fifteen holes will always see a backlog of players when the pins are behind bunkers but we have to do it to give the rest of the greens time to recover. I could tell the office to remove the 8.00am tee time from the field, possibly even the 10.30am tee time off both tees so the fields can run smoothly, but our waiting list for that day would be larger with another 16 names on it looking for a game. The majority of members don't like the waiting but accept it as part of the game today, as it could be me that misses out on playing. We have a strong membership now and I would hate to go down the path of say Pacific Golf Club where I have heard they do a ballot for the whole field. When we have a one tee start on Mon's and Fri's, the earlier groups can play in 4 hours or under but some of the lads are half way through their swing as they step out of their buggies. All it takes is for a couple of groups to lose a ball and the day gets longer for those behind, sometimes it is hard to catch up but you have to try. Pay attention to where your playing partner's golf ball goes as they should be doing the same for you. Some members eye sight is not what it used to be so the more watching the flight of the ball, the better for all. The safety of our staff is paramount and they have the right of way on any day but Monday is our course maintenance day where they try and do as much as they can. If they have their backs to you, wait until they are finished what they are doing, they are aware that you are there and will move to one side for you to play through. We have installed security cameras on the 1st and 10th tees for the pro shop to make sure everyone hits off on time. In order to address the times that members are taking to play, we are implementing a time stamp with our score cards, so someone out of your group will need to put their card in as soon as they finish. If this does not happen, I will be speaking to the group as too why you have taken so long to play. If a pattern appears with any group, they will be made to play at the end of the afternoon field. This time stamping will be done on all competition days and will be monitored by the Ladies and Men's Match Committee's. 4

MENS MATCH REPORT Our website offers more than just booking a game of golf, if you click on (My Information), this will bring up where you can check that your contact details are correct, check the balance of your house account which can be used in our spike bar or for a drink with mates after the game. It also has where you are booked to play and by clicking on each game it will tell you, who you are playing with. If you have played in the morning, you can follow the scores that are coming in with the leader board, you can check how you have played with Mi-stats and also the weather site where we are all praying for a good downpour. Vouchers won can be retrieved from the match office and if no one is in the match office, the staff behind the bar can access them for you. Many of our sponsors will honour the vouchers, you could put it on your bar account or off your fee's. You may wish to open up an account with the pro shop with it. Russell Michael Men s Captain Our B grade Pennant side has started strongly with two wins from two starts and our Master's side won also with their season starting on the 5th Feb. Our Juniors put up a strong fight only to lose on the 18th. A grade's season starts on the 19th Feb. For those wishing to follow our pennant teams, the results can be found each week on The only time you are able to give someone a putt is in a Matchplay event and scuttlebutt is that some are doing it in other events. If this is found to be true, you will be disqualified. Our new dress code rules signs are posted at the entrance of the club and next to the pro shop. I hope all members follow these guidelines as I would hate to order you off the course for your attire. As this newsletter is posted, the match office is putting on an eagle's nest for both Wed's and Sat's competition. We are starting off with 6 balls in each. The crows will take anything from unsupervised buggy so make sure everything you value is locked up tight in your golf bag, don't park closer to the green trying to protect what you have, all this will do is wear out the sides of our greens and most of us couldn't get back to the buggies in time to save what ever they have taken. The members that walk still have to be vigilant with all their gear but the advantage they have is their bag is close to where they are taking their shot. Men's Captain Russell Michael 5

LADIES MATCH REPORT Hello Ladies Opening Day was a terrific way to start the new year. The two person ambrose was easy to play and the wonderful buffet was even easier to eat. Although it has been very hot, the course looks good, even if the poor dams look like they could use a drink. The thunder storm we had last week has certainly helped fill up the big dam and maybe it won t be too long before we get just a little bit more. Penny Miller Ladies Captain This year Caloundra hosted the Kangaroo Challenge, which has been a yearly event between Caloundra and Headland for many years. In truth, the poor kangaroo trophy has probably seen better days, but we still prefer to have her at Caloundra. In 2016 Kangy was lost, but before I handed her over to the winning team I held her high so she could see her way back to Caloundra. On Tuesday 7 th, 5 pairs competed and were victorious, so the Kangaroo is back in Caloundra and we will work hard next year to keep her. The competition is 4BBB match play and was a wonderful day of friendship and fun. Girls on Tour sponsored our first Thursday match and our winners were Denise Donaldson, Del Hansen and Delma Cagney. Judy Polkinghorn was in attendance for a short time, but had to leave to attend to business. It was very nice to see her and she got a chance to talk to clients, old and new. Greens renovation put Tuesday out of action but we were back on track today with a wonderful stroke round. I don t know why the Captain included a stroke round in February. If I see her I will ask. Some people seem to excel regardless of the heat and today winners were Ruth Brangwin, Andrea Nixon and Heather Taylor. Our sponsors today were Kerry s Keyboards and Bert s Carpet One. I hope those winning ladies enjoy their prizes. In these first few days, we have also managed to fit in our first Gala Day on Sunday 5 th February. Our sponsor for this day was Brad Manning of Warana Beach Bakers. Thank you Brad. Of course the ladies put on wonderful salads and the gentlemen cooked the steaks and sausages which were also delicious. If you have not played a Gala Day, you should give it a try. Don t forget to check the red book in the ladies lounge for the Open and Invitation Days. They come up very regularly in these first few months. We do need to get a minimum of 5 ladies to play at the Open Days to keep up our commitment to Nett Pennant. Your handicap is no bar to being involved, you just play your game, have fun and who knows, we may get good points. Remember, you can get your name in for the Invitation Day by ing me, or by writing your name on the sheet in the ladies lounge. Not both please. Good golfing and remember, we are now heading towards COOL weather (I hope). Penny 6

VETERANS VOICE President's Say Already two months in our 2017 playing year and I welcome our new members. We hope you enjoy the company and, of course, our golf course. Please feel free to contact me if you have a question or two. At this point it has been a little quiet around the course but, having said that, our Friday field at around 150 is very good. Warm conditions resulted in some great scores in all divisions, but take advantage of the warmer weather and lack of rain while we have plenty of run on the course. We did have some exciting news with George McCarthy scoring an Eagle; Terry Watson did one better and celebrated his hole-in-one the 15 th. Welldone gentlemen! To keep you up to date, on February 15 th, 24 veterans will tackle the Noosa Golf Club, followed by a visit from Tin Can Bay and Nambour on February 24 th. Good to see we have a great competitive spirit within our club as illustrated in this report from Ron Beattie. On Friday, 23rd December, a major newsworthy event occurred. Kevin Thornton finally managed to win the golden orb after nearly 18 months of valiant but failed attempts. In achieving this dishonour, Kevin managed to win the snake (awarded for three putts on any green) on the first hole played and clung to it despite concerted attempts to take it from him by Tony Brangwin, Darren Davies and Ron Beattie (who was the previous holder) for the complete 18 holes. Colin Andrews has expressed his horror that he went on holidays before Thornton achieved what most players thought impossible - especially as Kevin already holds the notorious tree badge (6 trees in succession on the same hole)! Colin noted that, before too long, Kevin will also hold the Lebanese Lawn Badge awarded for the most shots in any one bunker in one game! Well done Kevin 07! P.S. A word from Kevin: To be fair, Tony was the first to three putt on our first hole played. Unfortunately, I did the same after him and won the snake. No one had the decency to three putt any of the next 17 holes! It was a bloody miracle! Editor s Note:- Kevin if you feel discriminated against, insulted or vilified in any way at all, the office staff offer counseling. I think it consists of a pat on the shoulder and a sincere, There, there, never you mind. 11

Vale John Dickinson VETERANS VOICE Cont John lost his battle with cancer recently. John was a well-known character to members of long standing. He loved his golf and was good at it. A sometimes rough ex-army exterior contained a kind and generous heart. Rooster one day - Feather duster the next Are you the only Caloundra Vet who hasn t counted the dimples on the ball that scored a 2 a 6 on the challenging, index 1, third hole. It was a couple of Fridays ago and I must point out, off the white tees, but Lord George McCarthy actually did achieve this amazing result - holing out for two and applying the two strokes his handicap enforces him to take. Illustrated is the more normal treatment this hole dishes out. Full marks for perseverance though George! Golf Link Magazine I hope everyone noted the article in this publication telling of our money raising effort to support the Sunshine Coast Prostate Cancer Support Group. This Man Day will be an annual event for Caloundra Vets. The support group contact is Rob Tonge - Ph: Local Rule Some members have asked for clarification regarding wheeling buggies across greens. This is a time saver and golf buggies should be wheeled across in a straight line without stopping. This of course applies to golfers on foot - not those riding a vehicle of any description. Old Scribbler P.S. I would remind veterans that you can influence what appears in Vet Notes or even contribute your own amusing anecdote by ing to vetnotes@westnet.com.au 12
