As part of this plan our financial performance over the past ten years has been analysed with the club receiving a glowing report especially our assets to debt ra o with our club in the top 2% of clubs statewide with our only ongoing liability being staff en tlements i.e long service leave and holiday pay which our club accumulates and holds in a separate bank account but is always shown as a liability for bookkeeping purposes. The main weakness pointed out in our financial structure is our ever increasing number of half fee members, this year at 107 and in 5 years me a calculated number of 213. With a maximum membership of 900 this would represent almost 24% of our membership and steadily increasing. This is unsustainable with our annual subscrip on needing to be increased to maintain our course requirements something to think about. The main complaint in our members survey was with our bunkers. To address this issue we have iden fied 29 bunkers which need to be renovated at an es mated cost of $120,000. A project of this size will require at least 3 years with a comple on rate of ten a year, with work to be done between March and September each year. A summary of the results of the members survey will be released shortly and the strategic plan which is s ll being worked on. We will have it completed in me for our AGM in October. The club auditors are at present comple ng last years financials. Our expected ne profit should be approximately $23,000, a very good result considering the amount of lost revenue due to the weather throughout the last year. Jim Burns 1

2 FINANCIAL REPORT Welcome to the first report for the new financial year and it s nice to report a good start with July up on budget. Club trading was good and great to see visitors green fees back on track. Our friends from south of the border and across the ditch have been enjoying our great winter weather, as well as our great course. Another plus is we have been able to retain our membership numbers this year and even had a bit of an increase with the new monthly payment op on helping en ce some new younger members as well as assis ng current members to stay on at the club. Neville Reid Treasurer Next week we should have all the EOFY figures (relieved to say it looks like we finished in front) and also the new five year plan which has been put together with the help of the professional planners and the great input from the members survey. This month will also see a small increase in bar prices due to the government excise tax increase, we held the prices with some pre-purchasing but with the new stock arriving so come the new prices. Cheers and good golfing. Neville 2

3 GREENS REPORT Well the weather certainly has been a lot drier in recent weeks. We have started watering the fairways again, which is something we haven t done since way back in January. That really highlights how much rain we have had over the past 6 or 7 months. I am amazed how well our three troublesome greens have come through the wet period and to top it off it has been a very cold winter. The three greens are the 1 st, 13 th and pu ng green. Even though I say they have done well they are s ll not great, especially the first green. The following is a brief outline as to why they struggle through this me of year. Wayne Anderson Greens Superintendent First green. The oldest green on the course and it was constructed using a very ordinary soil rather than sand which is the normal. The drainage system is inadequate which is a major issue for greens. The green is not a big green and it has a substan al er in the middle, which reduces the pin posi ons which in turn increases traffic wear. 13 th green. This is one of our smallest greens and has a major er in the middle, which again reduces pin posi ons and increases wear especially on the bo om er where the majority of pins are placed. Poor air circula on is another major factor that contributes to the greens poor health. Without going too deeply into it, to have a healthy green we need the moisture down lower in the soil profile and dry at the surface and air circula on helps keep the surface dry. Shade is not as big a factor on the 13 th green as it used to be due to several trees being removed over the past few years. Pu ng green. The pu ng green struggles for one reason alone. Wear. The amount of foot traffic on this green is massive compared to our course greens. Considering the amount of traffic on the green, it is doing okay. The health of these greens is only an issue during the cooler months when the grass is not ac vely growing. When the weather is warmer, and the grass is growing, it can withstand the stress from wear and poor drainage etc. 3

4 GREENS REPORT Wayne Anderson Greens Superintendent With the drier/cool weather comes an opportunity to get a few projects completed. We have recently completed reconstruc on of bunkers on 11 th, 12 th and 4 th greens. These three bunkers were the worst for holding water in wet periods. If the weather holds we are hoping to reconstruct two more bunkers before we get into the growing season. They are the bunkers on the le of the 10 th green and le of the 13 th green. We have also constructed a shade house at the machinery shed and cleaned up a drainage gully in the same area. We have spread topsoil and turfed bare areas in the 13 th and 3 rd rough and intend on using as much of the soil we have behind the 4 th green to top-dress bare and uneven areas around the course. Over the next couple of weeks we will be hiring a concrete planer to remove any trip hazards around our paths and hiring a root pruner to cut any roots from trees that may be encroaching into our fairways. We are very lucky at Caloundra Golf Club to have a great group of volunteers to help out with course work. The club recently purchased some shirts for the volunteers to wear when working and they look great. On a more sober note our thoughts are with Ron James one of our regulars who is having some health issues at the moment. 7 PRO SHOP Hi Members, What a beau ful month we've had, finally! Day a er day of perfect condi ons leading into championship me and what a me it has been. The course has certainly shown its teeth and it can be tough and mean with a simple li le adjustment to the speed of the greens. Some of the quickest pu s I've seen in a long me and congratula ons must go out to all the winners that held their nerve and pa ence in very difficult condi ons. Tom Arno Club Professional Speaking of holding nerve, Brooks Koepka was again outstanding to win his second major of the year. While I'm sure he was nervous on the inside he was very calm on the outside. It was really a great lesson to us all and the perfect example of staying in the moment and not le ng the occasion such as a championship put us off our game or change the way we normally go about our day. With spring brings new arrivals in golf apparel, footwear and I'm sure there will be some exci ng product releases from the major companies. There will be some fi ng days coming up in September and early October so stay tuned for those dates as they are always great days to check your current equipment against the latest releases as well as get fi ed into the correct equipment to suit your game and all at no charge. Juniors, Ladies and Vets clinics are going very well and a special thank you to all the members that have donated clubs, balls etc to help get the beginners up and running. Thank you to all that have been involved in making this all come together and I'm sure it will only get stronger with me. Good golfing into Spring and we look forward to seeing you all at the club enjoying our beau ful course. Regards, Tom 7

9 Defini ons from the New Rules of Golf that are coming into play 1 st January 2019 Ground Under Repair Any part of the course the Commi ee defines to be ground under repair (whether by marking it or otherwise). Any defined ground under repair includes both: All ground inside the edge of the defined area, and Any grass, bush, tree or other growing or a ached natural object rooted in the defined area, including any part of those objects that extends up above the ground outside the edge of the defined area, but not any part (such as a tree root) that is a ached to or below the ground outside the edge of the defined area. Ground under repair also includes the following things, even if the Commi ee does not define them as such: Any hole made by the Commi ee or the maintenance staff in: Se ng up the course (such as a hole where a stake has been removed or the hole on a double green being used for the play of another hole), or Maintaining the course (such as a hole made in removing turf or a tree stump or laying pipelines, but not including aera on holes). Grass Cu ngs, eaves and any other material piled for later removal. But: Any natural materials that are piled for removal are also loose impediments, and Any materials le on the course that are not intended to be removed are not ground under repair unless the Commi ee has defined them as such. Any animal habitat (such as a bird s nest) that is so near a player s ball that the player s stroke or stance might damage it, except when the habitat has been made by animals that are defined as loose impediments (such as worms or insects). The edge of ground under repair should be defined by stakes, lines or physical features: Stake: When defined by stakes, the edge of the ground under repair is defined by the line between the outside points of the stakes at ground level, and the stakes are inside the ground under repair. Lines: When defined by a painted line on the ground, the edge of the ground under repair is the outside edge of the line, and the line itself is in the ground under repair. Physical Features: When defined by physical features (such as a flower bed or a turf nursery), the Commi ee should say how the edge of the ground under repair is defined. When the edge of ground under repair is defined by lines or physical features, stakes may be used to show where the ground under repair is, but they have no other meaning. 9

10 There are certain topics which have not been changed in the New Rules for 2019 (as explained in the R & A March 2018 Update) and DIVOT HOLES IS ONE OF THEM. Preserving the Fundamental Challenge of the Game Play the Ball as it Lies In it s simplest form, golf is about playing the ball from tee to green by hi ng it with a golf club, and not otherwise touching the ball. A fundamental challenge of sport is to deal with whatever posi on your ball comes to rest in whether good or bad. While there are some necessary excep ons (such as obstruc ons and other abnormal course condi ons), the essen al nature of golf means these must remain excep ons rather than the norm. Therefore, the new Rules do not provide relief without penalty from situa ons that some golfers complain about, such as when their ball comes to rest in a divot hole on a fairway or in footprints in a poorly raked bunker. In addi on to being contrary to the fundamental principal of playing the ball as it lies, providing free relief in such circumstances would make the Rules harder to apply (for example, what is the difference between an irregularity of surface and an old divot hole?) and could slow down play when there are difficult ques ons about what is or isn t a divot hole Rules of Golf Decision 33 8/34: Relief from Divot Holes Q. May a Commi ee make a Local Rule providing relief without penalty from dicot holes or repaired divot holes (e.g. holes that have been filled with sand and/or seed mix)? A. No. Such a Local Rule would modify Rule 13-1 (Play the Ball as it Lies) and is not authorised. Explana on by R & A No Relief from Divot Holes Whilst it is understandable that golfers wish to take relief without penalty from divot holes as a good lie is their priority and Commi ees wish to protect their courses, essen ally, such holes are not abnormal ground condi ons; dicots are prevalent on all courses. If relief is permi ed from dicot holes (seeded or otherwise) there is the strong possibility that the player will create another divot in playing the stroke from the new loca on, o en a loca on with good grass cover and in good condi on. The number of dicots and poten al bad lies increases, which leads in turn to increased maintenance. Playing from a seeded dicot may prevent the new grass from establishing itself, but it does not damage any exis ng good ground; the sand/seed is sca ered, but this can be replaced. With such a Local Rule, problems also arise over dis nguishing divots from other damage, and the extent of the divot, i.e. whether the player actually has interference or not. If divots are seriously interfering with the proper playing of the game, e.g. there is an area where balls gather, the Commi ee may rope off the area and mark it as ground under repair for the me it takes for the area to repair. NO FREE DROPS. IF YOU ARE IN A DIVOT HOLE YOU MUST PLAY THE BALL AS IT LIES. 10

14 VETERANS VOICE President John Will be away playing golf in the Winter Sun Vets Tour and will be back by the 18th of August. He should come back with ba eries fully charged. Monthly medal results for August:- George Flaskas obviously had a day where those big drives landed on the fairway. He took out A Grade with 39 points. Ray Harris did even be er to take out the B Grade medal with 41 points and, good on you, Ian Terrey, taking out C Grade with a magnificent 42 points. Ian is a fine example of perseverance. As most Caloundra Vets know, Ian has had the odd ba le with health issues. Cooroy Twenty-four Caloundra Vets enjoyed a beau ful wintery day at Cooroy. Cooroy always gives us a warm welcome and their course is not without its challenges. The outstanding result of the day was the winning of the C Grade comp by Phil Courtney who played steady golf to chalk up a winning 38 points. Sa sfying to beat the locals on their own turf! Ross Carrigan won a NTP and the run down went to 32 points surprisingly. Nambour Caloundra fielded 16 vets all strong of heart lung and limb. The winner had 41 points and was local. The ball run down went to 35. Mat McKiernan did well to win a ball with 37 points while some sound performances were turned in by Dick Kamen and Phil Gardiner (34 points), Tony Brangwin (33 points) and George McCarthy (32 points). Captain Phil kindly chose not to men on the performances of the remainder. Zone Championships These will be at Caloundra for the first me on Monday 27th August and of course we want to do a terrific job as hosts. The event will be in 3 divisions with some great prizes. A Grade is stroke play whilst B and C Grade will be contested as Single Stableford events. As always, play golf while you s ll can. John 14

15 VETERANS VOICE Cont Jarrod Lyle Anyone who follows Australian golfers would know the Jarrod Lyle story. He overcame severe leukemia to perform as a top class pro. The disease eventually took him from us and the link below takes you to a tribute delivered by Robert Allenby which is very moving and well worth reading. h ps:// ooo000ooo Complaints Corner Here s a chance to get those gripes out into the open. Come on, it ll make you feel be er! A sympathe c ear awaits at vetnotes@westnet.com.au One of the biggest rorts large companies inflict on their customer base is the modern response to an a empt to contact them by phone. Instead of a competent switchboard fielding and redirec ng calls, we are now inconvenienced with this work, pressing interminable bu ons. And then there s call may be recorded for training purposes bit. What do they actually train them in? By them, do they mean their computers? I ve just dealt with a large insurance company, wishing to change the credit card from which automa c payments were made. It took about 50 minutes of my me. A voice kept telling me how valuable my me was, sugges ng how much easier it would be for me to do what I wanted on their web site. Of course, what I wanted could only be done by phone, mail or , their website told me! When I spoke to a human, she was lovely - polite and eager to help BUT her rapid speech was more akin to the chi ering of birds to a person in his eigh eth year and a li le hard of hearing. (A er three repe ons, I just take a guess at what they re saying.) Full marks to her for persis ng! But my point is that it was a harrowing experience for me, their valued customer. This is how all modern companies interface with their customers. ooo000ooo Norm Smith Trophy I seem to remember saying last month that it was Chris Ricke s job to catch the free wheeling pie scoffing Vardy and by jove he s done it! His long legs have done the job and 37.3 is now the top average. Should we require a sample? Next we have Bob Race (36.8) quietly holding at third and cha ng to Colin Grant (36.5) close behind. The pelaton hasn t changed much - Ian Sharman, an old showman (36.2), Dugald Clark, Patrick Heath, Richard McKenzie and Bob Wood taking up all the road on (36.1). Always keeping Dugald in sight, John Bryan (36) alongside Tom Simpson (36) and res ng at the back we have Jeff Griffin (35.9), Blue Loxton (35.8), Tony Brangwin (35.7) and globe tro ng Jim Maxwell (35.7). Stop Press! Results from the 10th are now to hand and there are some changes to report. I suppose the biggest change is the sudden appearance of Ray Harvey on He hasn t appeared before because he didn t have the requisite 10 games under his belt. He s now holding 4th posi on behind Ricke s, Vardy and Race. These people be ered their average score. Patrick Heath (+.3), Dugald Clark (+.2), Jeff Griffin (+.4), Anthony Brangwin (+.5) and Tom Simpson (+.2). Old Scribbler 15
