Caloundra Cooee 1 Charles Woodward Drive Caloundra QLD 4551 Telephone: (07) admin@caloundragolf.com.au Website: October 2018 PRESIDENT S REPORT The AGM was held on Sunday 14th October. We had 104 members a ending which was a lot more than in previous years. Thank you everyone. The construc on phase of the new dam has been completed one week ahead of schedule and $10,000 under budget. This was largely achieved because of member Dudley Farrow volunteering his exper se in the planning and supervision of this project. Thank you Dudley for all your hard work. We had only just completed digging when the rain set in, and this unfortunately delayed our fairway repairs. The fairways and manicuring of the area around the dam will be completed in due course. Jim Burns President Inside this Issue: Financial Report pg 2 Greens Report pg 3 Mens Match pg 4 Ladies Match pg 5 The Veterans Voice pg 14 The greens renova ons have also been badly effected by this con nuing rain with the coring being completed on the Thursday instead of Tuesday. A great effort, in trying condi ons, by our greens staff! I must also thank our lady members for their understanding with the change to their Thursday compe on. Our course has held up well considering the amount of widespread rain we have received. Our drainage systems are working over me and very well but this is an area which we need to keep improving to keep our lost playing me to a minimum. Tom Arno, our club professional, has been with us now for ten months and is providing a great service to our club. I would like to impress on members the need to support our Pro Shop and purchase your golfing needs from Tom. Our gaming area will receive a makeover with the replacement of 6 of our machines and the rest will have new note heads installed, to allow the use of the new $5, $10 and $50 bank notes. Jim 1

FINANCIAL REPORT From a financial point of view a big thank you to all involved in the new dam works, not only for bringing it in well under budget, but also a week early which as it turns out was perfect ming. The original budget for the dam was $70,000 but the opportunity to increase the capacity by another million litres existed so the budget was extended to $75,000, at this stage the figure for comple on is around $65,000 so that s an awesome result. Neville Reid Treasurer September was another steady month and our first quarter for the year was up on budget, although a li le down on last year. Our motorised carts starred clearing $26,800 for the 3 months a er deprecia on and commission, bar and catering also were up on budget but down on same me last year with less func ons and also some prepaid in advance. Green fees, compe on up Y.T.D. and visitors just a li le down, although at the me of wri ng things are a li le wet so let s hope that clears up soon. Expenditure for the quarter was also good with admin be er than budget and our club house solar star ng to show some good savings. Course is on budget and match expenditure was over budget. Overall a net opera ng profit of $52,026 for the July to September quarter. Cheers & good golfing Neville 2

GREENS REPORT There is not a lot to report this month. Everyone will have seen the work being carried out for the dam construc on between the 5 th and 7 th fairways. The amount of rain we have received in recent weeks has hampered the clean up work. Hopefully with some fine weather we can finish the work. The end result is great and the costs and effort and inconvenience to golfers was well worth it. Wayne Anderson Greens Superintendent The con nuous rain has hampered our greens renova ons. Somehow we managed to get the greens scarified, cored, top-dressed and fer lized in between the showers. I put the call out for help from members and was pleasantly surprised with the amount of people to offer assistance. In the end we didn t really need too much help because the weather forced us to change our normal rou ne. A massive thank you to all the members who did offer to help. We didn t get me to renovate the tees. Hopefully we will find me in the next few weeks to renovate them, but the grass is growing and our focus now will be to maintain the course to the highest standard and to finish the repair work a er the dam construc on. 4 MENS MATCH REPORT Our end of year events with our last Gala Day on the 25th November being a Mixed 4 ball Ambrose. Wednesday 5th Dec (Men's 4 ball Ambrose) and Saturday 8th Dec (4 Ball Ambrose), we will be using the new rules planned for coming into effort in January 2019, since these events aren't golflinked. With the removal of bollards around the tees, I am seeing more buggies with two wheels on the grass and two on the path provided. When this happens on a grand scale, ruts appear on the edge on the paths. There may come a me when someone could twist their ankle either stepping out of the club carts or just walking and not paying a en on. On one occasion I chipped 4 members having their 2 carts parked right on the 11th tee beside the path provided. Russell Michael Men s Captain MONDAY CLUB We are at the stage where we need to consider the end of year luncheon. Qualifica on criteria (1) All players must have played 15 games to be able to a end, excep onal circumstances may apply (i.e. Health) (2) The compe on on the day, prize alloca on will be the same as all year. (3) Compe on Fees - 30 plus games $ games, $ Exemp on $25.00 (4) Other prizes eg, Hams, Cakes will be by random draw. Winner must be present. Russ 4

LADIES MATCH REPORT Introducing the 2018/19 Match Commi ee L-R: Debbie Crick, Gae Howell, Glenda Kamen, Lee Boyle (Captain), Jacqui Crawford, Barb Zorgdrager (Vice Captain) and Barbara Hopkins. Lee Boyle Ladies Captain From the Match Mee ng September: Barbara Zorgdrager is collec ng names for Pennant If you haven t spoken directly to her & would like to represent Caloundra in the 2019 season please let Barbara or me know. At this stage we are confident we can field 4 teams, a week end, and one in each of 3 mid-week divisions. The handicap cut off is GA 32.2, so don t be shy. Opinions were sought on how or if Caloundra would par cipate in the Golf Queensland Brooch and Interna onal Bowl. The op ons were as follows:- 1. Revert to the old system and only those who have paid their money will be included in the calcula ons for the compe ons: Cost will be $10 per player. 2. Increase the annual fees to cover the shor all and all members will be included. 3. Do not par cipate in the two GQ events paid for on a per capita basis. NB: the Gertrude McLeod is not currently charged on a per capita basis and could con nue as the sole GQ event with a whole of club par cipa on. At this stage, consensus is that op on #1 is the preference. If you have something to say on this please let me know before the end of October. Our new member program is con nuing to be a success. Thank you to Joyce Penman and all our volunteers for giving up their me and thank you to our newer members for suppor ng the ini a ve and providing your feedback. It is wonderful to see the names of our new ladies in our field on Tuesday & Thursday. Trish McConnell is away un l late November. Dell Hughes and Jan Moon will support the programme in her absence. Bragging Rights Ne Pennant. Caloundra Finished the year in 3 rd place behind Bribie Island & Pelican Waters respec vely. This is a sensa onal result for our club. A er a slow start we came back with vengeance with a second place at Headland in September and at Pelican Waters earlier this month we were the winning team thanks to some fabulous individual performances from our 24 strong con ngent. Congratula ons to all those who par cipated in the South Zone Open Days throughout the year and we look forward to your support of this event in Remember it is strength of numbers that win the day and your handicap is irrelevant. Thank you to Susan Lowrie who was responsible for bringing Ne Pennant to the a en on of members and chasing up entries. 5

VETERANS VOICE President s Say (who always advises} Keep on playing golf as long as you can. Welcome to Anthony Cheswick-Jackson and Laurie Williamson who joined the Veterans this month and I encourage you to speak to any one of our commi ee members if you need clarifica on on any issue. Pleased to see Denis Smyth, Ron James and Pierce Bragg back on the course again. On Friday October 5, we hosted 21 members from Pelican Waters. Playing condi ons were great but our visitors found that we had a few more trees to contend with than perhaps they were used to. Our 2018 Veterans Club Championship was played over two Fridays and some great scores were recorded as you can see from the scores. Congratula ons to Ian Broom who is our 2018 Veterans Club Champion with a great gross score of 161; well done Ian. NAME RD 1 RD2 Result CLUB CHAMPION IAN BROOM JUNIOR CHAMPION (55-69 YEARS) DUGAL CLARK SENIOR CHAMPION (70-74 YEARS) JOHN BRYAN ELDER CHAMPION (75 YEARS & OVER) GARY VARDY JUNIOR RUNNER-UP CHRIS RICKETTS SENIOR RUNNER-UP GEOFF STEPHEN ELDER RUNNER-UP PAT HEATH Our October monthly medal compe on was deferred to Friday October 19 due to rain, which reduced our playing numbers. This will be my last President s Voice as I have decided that a er 11 years it is me to sit back and focus more on golf. It only seems yesterday when I was invited to join the commi ee. My very first role was selling raffle ckets with a 6.00am start as s ll happens today except that John Massie has a list of volunteers to take on the early start. This was an excellent way to meet all our members especially as I was a rela vely new member. 14

VETERANS VOICE Those days we played every second Friday and slowly increased our playing calendar to every Friday. We got excited when our field numbers increased to 115 players (a lot easier to get a game) and so our Veteran s club grew to the membership numbers we have today. Technology changed the manner in which we administered our opera on. No more coun ng and checking every score card; no more manual count backs to determine the winners of the day. Host days were different. Some of you may remember the Mega Host days where three or four clubs were invited and we had a morning and a ernoon field but, a er twelve months, it was decided to return to limi ng host days to two clubs. Picture the numbers in the club house all wan ng their beer. (We ve had many memorable break up par es!) As our membership numbers and our fields grew, we needed to con nue to adopt changes to ensure all our members had their weekly game of golf with the veterans. Over these eleven years I have been part of excellent commi ees to take this club forward and am proud of the fact that we can claim to be the largest Veterans club on the Sunshine Coast. Over the years we have seen a number of changes. For instance, in the early days we had one sponsor and today we have ten sponsors, most of them having supported our club over seven years. Of course, there are a number of highlights but the annual Man-Day event held in November, which was introduced to our player calendar to raise funds for Prostate Cancer Research and their Support group, is a fantas c day of golf. And more recently our other main event is the Caloundra Golf Club now hos ng the annual Sunshine District Veterans Championship played in August. In closing, I thank current and past commi ee members as well as all our members for their support. I am sure we will con nue to strive to be the best club on the Sunshine Coast and I am proud that I have been part of this team. In case you forget Keep on playing golf as long as you can! John 15

A bit of nostalgia.not royal but ancient veterans might recall a me when our volunteer ladies put on sit down lunches for host days. 17 Educa on in the early 20th century VETERANS VOICE Cont Whatever your views on modern educa on, the old methods were o en brutal but strangely effec ve. The anecdote below comes from some autobiographical notes wri en by very ancient old scribbler - born Discipline was considered essen al for success. The cane was seen not only as the upholder of school rules but as a posi ve aid in obtaining be er class results. Bad spelling, carelessness in maths, bad wri ng, talking in class, not si ng up correctly were all offences punishable by caning whether it be merely one cut or six of the best. The cane didn't have much to do with me un l I reached Higher Fourth. My work was sa sfactory and any misbehaviour I was guilty of slipped by without drama. When it caught up with me, it did so with a vengeance and I think covered my sins of the day and all previously overlooked. One Monday morning the whole class handed in Exercises well below standard. *Exercises were just that - exercises in neat wri ng and had to be clean, free of mistakes and in copperplate wri ng. They were done with pen and ink and were also an exercise in concentra on. No cane was used but, a er a heated dressing down, the class was told that every lesson every day for the next fortnight would be copy books un l we could all write copperplate. This was really one of those days. It began with my forge ng my homework book. Forgot was not an acceptable excuse and I received four cuts. *Vigorous downward blows to the fingers of the outstretched hand. At the eleven o'clock recess, I picked a carrot from the class garden plot and ate it. This was permissible on occasion if one asked. As I hadn't sought permission, my earlier punishment was repeated with even more energy. Immediately we returned to class, I turned around to pick up my pencil and was accused of talking in class and copped another four cuts! Needless to say I wasn't too impressed with the day to date and being punished for something I actually hadn't done filled me with such righteous indigna on that I stormed out of the room and raced home. My Dad listened to my tale of woe, gave the teacher the benefit of the doubt, gave me a good strapping and sent me back to school where I received the maximum six cuts. Eighteen strokes of the cane in one day I have no trouble remembering THAT day! Old Scribbler 17
