Caloundra Cooee 1 Charles Woodward Drive Caloundra 4551 Telephone:(07) Fax: (07) admin@caloundragolf.com.au Website: April 2018 PRESIDENT S REPORT A er a very wet March and the first couple of weeks of April the weather is improving and allowing our course to dry out. The concrete path program has proven to be quite successful throughout this wet period as it has allowed golf buggies to be permi ed on the course all throughout the month regardless of the rain. The paths are all complete and will only require repairs or small addi ons in the foreseeable future. As a mainly volunteer based work project over the years it has improved our course durability beyond excep ons and at a vastly reduced cost to our club. Our golf buggy fleet is working very well, even with our reduced playing numbers over the past months. Please remember when using our buggies to treat them as if they are your own, this will ensure they last the test of me. Jim Burns President Inside this Issue: Financial Report pg 2 Greens Report pg 3 Mens Match pg 4 Ladies Match pg 6 The Veterans Voice pg 15 The Pro shop was broken into and an amount of cash stolen. The perpetrator smashed through the front door, and fortunately our security cameras caught an image which we passed onto the police who are dealing with the case. In the near future new cameras will be installed inside the Pro shop, outside the locker rooms towards the spike bar and in the buggy storage area. Members with lockers may have no ced some of the ligh ng in these areas is off un l you walk into the room. We are trailing a new mo on detec on system in hopes to reduce our electricity usage. The new ice machine in the breezeway has been installed. Go try it out and fill up your eskies and water bo les to keep cool out on the course. As a final note, please make sure your contact details including your address are up to date with the club as annual subscrip on no ces will be sent out shortly and this year we are hoping to send out most of them by , saving the club money in paper and postage as well as doing our bit for the environment. 1

FINANCIAL REPORT A be er than expected result for March has put a bit of a posi ve spin on things. With most of the month s ll pre y wet we finished in front for the month $7, Although down on budget it was a nice result and we must give praise to our fantas c Green staff for keeping us playing, keeping the buggies on, and the course looking so good where other clubs were struggling, well done!! Neville Reid Treasurer The purchasing of the new buggies is proving to be a great asset for the club and a er the first 3 months I m happy to report they are showing a profit of $23, which is certainly helping with our P & L, and considering the condi ons through this period, is an amazing result. With a good run from now we could see them paying for themselves quicker than an cipated. Once again thank you to members for suppor ng them and also suppor ng the club so well and hopefully April to June can get us back in front Cheers & good golfing Neville WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS John Deakin Steven Grimes Greg Irvine Anthony Merri Miles Romagnoli Travis Romagnoli 2

GREENS REPORT There is not a great deal to talk about at the moment so I thought I would run through our normal/regular maintenance of the greens. The following is what we do daily/weekly/ fortnightly on the greens throughout the growing season. It does change as the temperature drops and the growth slows. The greens are cut at 3mm for most of the summer period. They are at 3.5mm at the moment and will soon be raised to 4mm. Wayne Anderson Greens Superintendent The greens are double cut every day. On Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday the in-head groomers are engaged and the greens are double groomed at the same me as they are double cut. The greens are rolled every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Unless there is something special on, the holes are changed every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Every fortnight the greens have a foliar applica on of an N.P.K fer liser, root s mulant, soil condi oner and Primo which is a growth regulator. Every month the greens have an applica on of a we ng agent and soil micro organism s mulant. As you can see there is a bit of work that goes into producing good greens. The products that we use on the greens are to keep the greens healthy with a strong root system so the grass can withstand the stress of play and of being cut short and rolled regularly. The weather has been a major talking point for the past 4 to 6 months. So far this year the rainfall per month is as follows. January 46mm. February 316mm. March 209mm. April 27mm so far. That is a massive amount of rain in February/March, which is a third of our yearly average in two months. Despite the amount of rain we have received the course has stood up extremely well. The drainage work we have done over the past few years has been very effec ve at ge ng the golfers and workers back out on the course. There has not been much disease around, which is unusual when you get that much rain together with very hot/humid condi ons. I am s ll hoping for a dry winter, Wayne Anderson 3

MENS MATCH REPORT The winner of our Monday Club Masters Day was Ross Hopkins on a countback from Allan McDermo with 41points. Ross a ributes his good form to a lesson from our pro's. Russell Michael Men s Captain I con nue to see some members hi ng more than 2 golf balls in a prac ce round: If you refer to our green book on by laws of Caloundra Golf Club - 4. Play on our course (vi) In prac ce rounds or social rounds no more than two (2) balls shall be played. A warning le er will be issued about your behaviour and if you con nue with this prac ce, disciplinary ac on will be taken. We have a chipping area as well, and the bunker there has been upgraded. If you want to hit a bucket of balls go to our prac ce range and not on the course. We all have to be more vigilant on our greens with our feet, if you have got new spikes on your shoes be careful when you have just missed a pu, don't spin round on your feet if you do or even accidently drag one of your shoes, pat down the sprig marks a er you have had your shot, you are able to fix a plug mark on your line but what you aren't allowed to do is fix any sprig marks on your line of pu this rule is due to change in 2019 but un l then, do it a er your pu for those following you. We all want to play the course as it was presented to you. It has also been reported to me via a happy snap that some are walking into bunkers stepping over rakes, having their shot and walking out the same way. If you see someone in your group doing this bring it to their a en on, it will make my job a lot easier, if they refuse to do it, don't sign their card or you could put in a le er of complaint about their behaviour. In the handbook of the rules of golf: SECTION 1- E que e, Behaviour on the Course. If players follow these guidelines it will make the game more enjoyable for everyone. In the case of a serious breach of e que e, the commi ee may disqualify a player under Rule

MENS MATCH REPORT Rule 6-3 relates to the mes: of star ng and groups The player or players must start at the me established by the commi ee. b ( Groups ). In any event the player or players must remain in the group arranged by the commi ee, unless the commi ee authorizes or ra fies a change. What you aren't allowed to do is make up your own group and enter the field because no one is hi ng off now. We have gone to 8 minute intervals for all to enjoy a quick round. It is quite easy for a gap to appear if the first group hit off just before their allocated me and the groups behind them are of the belief we need to catch up to the group in front. This is how a gap could appear in the field. Russell Michael Men s Captain This happened recently when a group were told if they split up they could play in the comp as there were single spots in the field or if they were prepared to wait un l near the end of the field, they declined this op ng to stay as a group and asked our pro (Tom) if he could print some cards for them as there was a gap in the field. Tom is trying to accommodate all members wishes but ini ally found it hard to print them but, by pu ng them in an inac ve line on the sheet, he could. I have asked him not to do this in the future as any changes have to be made through the Men's match commi ee. There is a website available for the match office where we can check how long each group takes to play and that the three gentlemen playing at 5.52 from an inac ve spot on the sheet and took 4 hours and 20mins to play and the group (3) following them taking only 3 hours and 15mins to play. Admi edly I think these three must be halfway through their backswing as they step out of their buggies to play 18 holes in this me. For this, the group hi ng off from an inac ve spot on the comp sheet and fi ng into the field is a serious Breach of Rule: 6-3b: PENALTY, Disqualifica on. If there aren't any spots available when you want to play, put yourself on the wai ng list early and set the me you want, Monday's will be between 6.30am and 11am. Because we offer 4 grades for prizes for Monday's and 2 grades for the pro pin, our numbers are increasing and may go the same way as our Vet's comps. Friday's will be between 6am and 11.52am for all the Vet's comps including host days. Wed and Sat is between 6am and 8am for the morning fields and the a ernoons will be between 10.30am and 12.30pm. If you don't want to play compe on, there are mes between 6 and 7am off the first for nine holes or if you prefer to follow the last group in the comp a er for 18 holes on Friday's or 11am for Monday's at the moment. Because Mon is our main course maintenance day, you could go off in front of the field but only socially as the comp starts at The men's match commi ee of myself, Mike Setchell (Vice Captain), Kevin Clues, Blue Loxton and Ian Broom (rules) are responsible for all the men's compe ons held on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Men's Captain Russ Michael. 5

LADIES MATCH REPORT Hello Ladies, We have finally reached a point where the ladies have played some golf this month. Colleen McDowall and Glenda Kamen were the winners of the 4 ball Matchplay knockout with Bev Caldwell and Jacqui Crawford being the runners up. Congratula ons girls. Ladies this is a very interes ng game to play and I would encourage you to play. Because this par cular comp has handicaps restric ons, it means you have a high and low marker playing together. The next 4 ball Matchplay does not have handicap restric ons. It commences with a 4 ball stableford round as a qualifier on 17 May, and you can choose to con nue with the format or not. Of course there are limits to the numbers able to qualify, but I would encourage you to try. Penny Miller Ladies Captain Tuesday 20 March also saw Dell Hughes 38 and Anna George 41, winners of the single stableford. Thursday 22 March was our Invita on Day with 124 ladies from our club and visi ng clubs. Our social club put on a very delectable morning tea thanks to the donated food from our ladies. Thanks to all. Our sponsors Suncity Travel were very generous which enabled us to give lots of prizes. The winners were Kate Wilkie and Diane Gilmour from Headland. Our ladies came in at 4 th for Felicity Stephen and partner, 5 th for Carolyn Watson and partner and 6 th for Wendy Quinn who partnered with our Zone President Judy Pa erson. Congratula ons to all and thank you again to Suncity Travel. On Saturday 26 March Wendy Quinn won with 36 points. Tuesday 27 th Colleen McDowall 35 and Kathy Byrne with 31 were the stableford winners. Hills Robes and Screen stroke round was postponed due to rain and the sinlge stableford was won by Lee Boyle and Kathy Byrne. There were 35 players which was fairly good for a rainy day. Saturday 31 st was won by Glenda Kamen with 36 points. On Tuesday 3 rd April Lee Boyle was a winner with 37 and Anna Geroge with 35. The monthly Medal on 5 th April was won by Carolyn Watson 72, Marilyn Foreman 76 and Anna George 76, Our sponsors for the day were Ros Kendrick, Jacqui Crawford and Blue Orchid Thai Restaurant. Thank you sponsors. The Saturday medal as won by Debbie Flannery with 68. 6

LADIES MATCH REPORT Tuesday 10 th was the Irish 4 ball which had been postponed due to weather. Our sponsors for the day were Relma Fox, Elmi Parviainen, Carolyn Watson and Debbie Flannery. Thank you ladies. We had a field of 66 and the winners were Tracey Liddelow, Liz Donaldson, Barb Hopkins and Pay Morrissey. Thursday was a 4 ball sponsored by Dinny Garnsworth, Kate Setchell and Maree Su on. It was a wonderful day for Kim Curd. She started with a hole in one on the 2 nd and con nued the day with great scores. Jo Burley also had a good day which resulted is a 46 point score for them to win the day. Glenda Smith had a win on Saturday 14 th with 32 points. Penny Miller Ladies Captain Below is a diagram which shows the pace of play of each group. The blue indicates a 1st tee hit off and the red is obviously the 10 th. For some reason, ladies are taking a lot longer when hi ng off from the 10 th. So lets talk about how long it takes to play. Firstly there are no prescribed mes available for players to finish 18 holes. We now hit off with 8 minutes between star ng mes, which means each group should finish 8 minutes apart. It has been shown though and there can be a minutes extra lost between groups. Therefore if there are 10 groups hi ng of the first, the last group should take no longer than an extra 10 minutes. You don t have a four hour or a four and a half hour en tlement. The rules are many, but in the E que e sec on the overriding principle is that CONSIDERATION should be shown to others on the course at all mes. It goes on in PACE OF PLAY to say that players should play at a good pace. The group s responsibility is to keep up with the group in front. Where a group has lost a clear hole it should invite the following group through. The fact that some groups are in carts and others are walking, should not impact the pace of play, because in front of a group in carts may be a group of walkers. We all know that we can get into trouble and this is a me to invite the following group through. If you look at the diagram about, the 1 st hit offs longest round was 4 hours 10 minutes, so why did a group hi ng off the 10 th take four hours forty minutes to play the same course. 7

LADIES MATCH REPORT Penny Miller Ladies Captain About 15 minutes is added to following groups per hole when you loose a fairway. Therefore the following groups are looking at long delays when you are too slow. CONSIDERATION is the main considera on. Slow play is selfish. You are not the only players out there. So if your rou ne takes too long adapt it so that it is less. If you get behind take steps to catch up. You can send 2 players to hit off the next hole and this does help you to catch up. While I am fully aware of Rule 10 which sets out the order of play it clearly states there is No Penalty for not doing it in honour order. If you insist on Honour, then play faster. The whole idea of the day is for EVERYBODY to enjoy their golf. We all pay the same fees and so should be en tled to get the same enjoyment (winning aside that s down to you. Just so you know, this program does tell me who is in each of those me slots, so you can t get away with saying you are not slow. Pick up your pace. Stop being selfish and give considera on to everybody so we can all enjoy the day. I would like to take a quick moment to send out a HUGE thanks to Elva Barnes, who has, so generously donated a new Lady Member Name Tablecloth to the club. This is now the third table cloth for us, the first one is mounted on the wall in the boardroom of the club. If any new lady members of the club would like to have their names embroidered onto the tablecloth please let one of our lovely Social Commi ee Ladies know. Good Golfing Ladies! Penny 8

We did look so smart. Caloundra hosted 10 teams and despite the humid condi ons, many compliments were received on the condi on of the course and the quality of the food. Thank you to Debbie and her volunteer helpers who managed to get all the meals out on me. Thank you to our ladies for providing a scrump ous morning tea and to the ladies who sent the field off & collated the team sheets and generally made the day run smoothly. Penny Miller Ladies Captain Results: Weekend: Dell Hughes, captain of the week end team and her team secured a 3 point draw against Maroochy River. 10 PRO SHOP Yet again another amazing Masters Tournament. Patrick Reed may not be the most popular player on tour but certainly showed some real strength and determina on to hold off Rickie Fowler and a charging Jordan Spieth. For those who watched the final round were privileged to what was almost the greatest round of golf in Major Championship history, if only it wasn't for that final branch on the 18th hole that got in Jordan's way. Not to be le out, Cameron Smith's 5th placing was an outstanding effort and his final back 9 of 30 shows he has all the tools to compete and poten ally win the Masters. Tom Arno Club Professional I was the club pro at Wan ma Golf Club when Cameron Smith was between the ages of I'll never forget the first me I played with him, a very baby faced and slightly built 14 year old. He birdied the first 5 holes and went on to shoot 64! Cameron came through the junior program at the club and as we are seeing has gone on to do great things. It is that very same program I'm working towards building here at Caloundra. We are up to 15 boys and girls in the junior program now and shortly we'll begin our 4/5 hole weekly compe on. Special thanks to Terry Ryan for helping out each week and it's great to see his 10 year old grandson (Thom) already outperforming his Grandfather. Pro Shop Stock, Demo's and Price Guarantee: I just thought I'd take this opportunity to let all the members know that I guarantee to at the very least match prices but I'm certain in most cases you'll find the prices in the pro shop are be er than anywhere else. The only me I can't beat prices is on superseded products that are bought in bulk by retailers such as Golf Factory Outlet. Also a reminder that all the hardware in the pro shop is available to demo and if we don't have what you want to try please ask because in most cases we will be able to source it for you. Thanks again to all the members for suppor ng the pro shop and good golfing for the rest of April and into May. Regards Tom Arno 10

Every N.T.P. had only one name and distances from pin not that flash - this in a field of 172! ooo000ooo The Masters Many of us enjoyed the Masters Breakfast watching the final round of the Masters. Bobby Jones, the bloke who built Augusta and started The Masters Tournament was probably the most famous amateur golfer of his day. The following might be of interest to some. Robert Tyre Jones Jr. (March 17, 1902 December 18, 1971) was an American amateur golfer who was one of the most influen al figures in the history of the sport; he was also a lawyer by profession. Jones founded and helped design the Augusta Na onal Golf Club, and co-founded the Masters Tournament. The innova ons that he introduced at the Masters have been copied by virtually every professional golf tournament in the world. 15

VETERANS VOICE Cont Jones was the most successful amateur golfer ever to compete at a na onal and interna onal level. During his peak from 1923 to 1930, he dominated top-level amateur compe on, and competed very successfully against the world's best professional golfers. Jones o en beat stars such as Walter Hagen and Gene Sarazen, the era's top pros. Jones earned his living mainly as a lawyer, and competed in golf only as an amateur, primarily on a part- me basis. He chose to re re from compe on at age 28, though he earned significant money from golf a er that, as an instructor and equipment designer. Explaining his decision to re re, Jones said, "It [championship golf] is something like a cage. First you are expected to get into it and then you are expected to stay there. But of course, nobody can stay there. Jones is most famous for his unique "Grand Slam," consis ng of his victory in all four major golf tournaments of his era (the open and amateur championships in both the U.S. & the U.K.) in a single calendar year (1930). In all Jones played in 31 majors, winning 13 and placing among the top ten finishers 27 mes. Augusta Na onal Golf Club Following his re rement from compe ve golf in 1930, and even in the years leading up to that, Jones had become one of the most famous sports figures in the world, and was recognized virtually everywhere he went in public. While certainly apprecia ve of the enormous adula on and media coverage, this massive a en on caused Jones to lose personal privacy in golf circles, and he wished to create a private golf club where he and his friends could play golf in peace and quiet. 16

VETERANS VOICE Cont For several years, he searched for a property near Atlanta where he could develop his own golf club. His friend Clifford Roberts, a New York City investment dealer, knew of Jones's desire, became aware of a promising property for sale in Augusta, Georgia, where Jones's mother-in-law had grown up, and informed Jones about it. Jones first visited Fruitlands, an Augusta arboretum and indigo planta on since the Civil War era, in the spring of 1930, and he purchased it for $70,000 in 1931, with the plan to design a golf course on the site. Jones co-designed the Augusta Na onal course with Alister MacKenzie; the new club opened in early He founded the Masters Tournament, first played at Augusta in March The new tournament, originally known as the Augusta Na onal Invita onal, was an immediate success, and a racted most of the world's top players right from its start. Jones came out of re rement to play, essen ally on an exhibi on basis, and his presence guaranteed enormous media a en on, boos ng the new tournament's fame. During World War II, Jones served as an officer in the U.S. Army Air Forces. His superiors wanted him to play exhibi on golf in the United States, but Jones was insistent on serving overseas. In 1943 he was promoted to major and trained as an intelligence officer, serving in England with the 84th Fighter Wing, which was part of the Ninth Air Force. While in England, he made the acquaintance of General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Landing in Normandy on June 7, 1944, Jones spent two months with a front line division as a prisoner of war interrogator, reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel. During the war, Jones permi ed the U.S. Army to graze ca le on the grounds at Augusta Na onal. Later, in 1947, he founded Peachtree Golf Club in Atlanta and co-designed the course with Robert Trent Jones. In 1966, the governing board and membership of Augusta Na onal passed a resolu on naming Jones President in Perpetuity. (Extracts from Wikipedia) Old Scribbler 17
