Caloundra Cooee 1 Charles Woodward Drive Caloundra 4551 Telephone:(07) Fax: (07) admin@caloundragolf.com.au Website: February 2018 PRESIDENT S REPORT The vacant posi on of Treasurer has been filled and approved at the last Management Commi ee mee ng. We welcome Neville Reid to the board of the club. The Pro Shop renova ons are now complete and the result is really good, with the area having a bigger feel to it. We encourage all members to support our new professional Tom whenever possible. Our new buggy fleet has been very successful, so much so that Management Commi ee approved increasing the number of buggies from 20 to 25. To accommodate the extra 5 buggies we have moved the beer cart from the garage at the front of the clubhouse. It will be temporarily relocated to the new machinery shed. A new double garage will be erected next to our wood chipper carport, this will house the beer cart and one of our course utes. Jim Burns President Inside this Issue: Financial Report pg 2 Greens Report pg 3 Mens Match pg 4 Ladies Match pg 5 The Veterans Voice pg 12 Our solar system is working very well, resul ng in our clubhouse bill being reduced by one third, using only about half our system. To explain, when we installed the panels we had to split the system over our two bills, one our monthly clubhouse bill and the other our quarterly bill for the kitchen. This result proves we made a very good investment in our future. The amount of good feedback from visitors to our course over the holiday period has been excep onal. I would like to thank our greens staff for their ongoing work commitment to always improving our golf course. WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS Bailey Arno Jan Baumgarten Larry Campbell Kristopher Curd Murray Rogers 1

FINANCIAL REPORT Firstly I would like to men on the outgoing treasurer David Valen ne, David has been involved in the club for many years and has always done an outstanding job, thanks David. I would also like to thank the Management Commi ee for the opportunity to join them, they have many exci ng things planned for moving the club forward and it will be great to be involved in this. Neville Reid Treasurer For January the club made a net loss of $17,765.00, with expenditure over budget (but I m sure we can all see the benefits of that with some work happening around the club, the course looking so great and the seamless changeover in the pro shop) but the good news is bar takings were up. The other things taking a hit were the pokies and green fees. As for the green fees, looking ahead to this years holiday period we should look at Dec/Jan as a whole and to where the public holidays fall and when school goes back, as this can make a difference to comp days and course traffic with the visitors, we have 5 months of the year le so hopefully we can keep things ght and make up some ground. By now you would have no ced the extra 5 buggies have arrived on course taking the fleet up to 25, thank you to the members for suppor ng the great $22 deal and keeping them turning over. The extra carts not only will help with so many people on the wai ng list for sheds but we can now also accommodate some of the larger social clubs. Cheers, Neville 2

GREENS REPORT Wayne Anderson Greens Superintendent Autumn greens renova ons have been carried out and at this stage the result looks great. Renova ons at this me of year are all about ge ng the greens ready for Winter. We don t go as hard with thatch removal as we do in Spring because we want to have more grass on the greens through the colder period. More grass on the greens through the colder period allows the greens to withstand the wear and tear of golf at a me when the grass is not ac vely growing. The process from here is most likely one more light top -dress, a bit more fer liser and if the heat stays, the greens will be back to normal in no me. A huge thank you to the volunteers that helped out on both days, we couldn t do it without you. By the me you receive this newsle er we will also have cored the tees. A er coring, we rub the cores back into the holes and only top-dress the tees that have either bare patches or low areas. The construc on of our new 328 Tifgreen nursery near the 3 rd tee, is almost complete. It is hoped that we will be plan ng it on Monday 26 th February. I will be looking for a few volunteers on the day. Over the course of the next few weeks we will be patching out bare areas in and around the fairways. Areas of concern at the moment are the 16 th fairway, 12 th fairway, 3 rd rough le side and the 13 th rough both sides. Wayne Anderson 3

MENS MATCH REPORT Our Pennant Season kicked off on the 4th Feb with Masters taking on Headland at Mt Coolum. The lads (of which I am one) didn't fair too well going down 5.5 to 1.5. We hosted the Junior Pennants on the 11th Feb and our team of Liam Dawson, William Stringer and Jonathan Drechsler put up a good fight to square with Gympie. It was a new experience for Will and Jonathan playing Pennants, but according to our Pennant Coordinator (Kevin Clues), match official (Bass Broom) and the team manager (Mike Dawson), the boys did us proud. A grade had a close game against Headland at Maroochy River with our No. 1 (Chris Wilson) being one down a er 16 and sinking a monster pu on the 17th to square and win the 18th for the team to finish 4/3, well done to all. Russell Michael Men s Captain George McCarthy and myself have put up the coloured disc's we voted on to install as beacons on the edge of fairways, for those of us whose eyes aren't what they use to be, at our last AGM. The supplier only had blue, red and white to work from but these are difficult to see where we put them and may need to be tweaked a bit, both in placement and a bit more colour added to them. I am forever chipping the same members who fudge the no-go areas around our greens and tees in their buggies, these areas need to be preserved for all of us to enjoy. You may be the last group of the day and think I won't see you but the social groups following you will and they may think if it is good enough for the members to do, we will too. It has been reported to me that certain members are using the head of their pu er to retrieve their ball out of the hole, again others see you doing it and think why not. You are se ng a bad example for those around you. The top 16 pairs from the 4BBB Stroke to be held on the 17th March will qualify for the Smith and Henry 4BBB Matchplay (Honour Board Event). You need to be available for the first round on the 14th April, 2nd round 21st April, 3rd round 28th April and the final to be held on 12th May. I will be giving a courtesy call to the top 16 to see if they will be available. If for some reason your partner can't play one game, you can take the opposi on yourself and if you get through that, your partner can re-join you for the other rounds. First Prize is $100 and the runners up will get $50. Men's Captain Russ Michael New Mobile ( ) 4

LADIES MATCH REPORT Hello Ladies, What a shame our Opening Day on 1 st February could not have gone ahead. It would have been before this dreadful heat descended upon us. It was great though, to see so many ladies come out to the club and just enjoy some friendship with their mates. Penny Miller Ladies Captain So we have really only had one game and that was the single stableford sponsored by Lucy Cameron from Escape Travel Personal Travel Consultants. Lucy was able to speak briefly to the ladies before having to leave. Thank you Lucy, for your sponsorship. The best score of the day went to one of our newer ladies, Jan Baumgarten who had 40 points in C Grade. A grade went to Debbie Crick with 36 and B Grade to Maree also with 36. Tuesday was greens renova on which prevented play and we hope the greens soon recover. There were a few fairly rough ones yesterday Thursday 15 th February when we played our rescheduled Opening Day. Oh boy, what a scorcher. I am so amazed that 99 ladies managed to play in that dreadful heat. Thank goodness it was a 2 ball ambrose and we were able to rely on our partners occasionally. Personally, it was lucky I could pu because Fay pre y much carried me the rest of the way. Thanks Fay. In the end though, the Chairlady s team won the day. It was a close call, so I will have to leave it to Lee next year to try for the Captain s side. Congratula ons Pam and all of the ladies who made up your team. I would like to welcome our new lady members and hope you enjoy playing with our exis ng members. There is not much to tell you about this month, but remember that the Invita on Day is closing soon, so put your names on the sheet. Do remember to look in the Red book for upcoming away days. Un l next month, good golfing and here s hoping for a bit of cooler weather. Penny. 5

PRO SHOP The pro shop renova on has come together very well so all the members that haven't seen it please come in and check out the new layout. 11 VETERANS VOICE President s Say Welcome to our new member who joined the Veterans this month, Neville Herrmann and Kevin Caldwell. If you have any ques ons please contact me on and we ll clarify any issues you may have. Our February compe on started with a very wet day, which was great for our course but reduced the field to 18 enthusias c club members to tackle the wet condi ons! Your results have been entered for Norm Smith Trophy purposes. Well done gents! Friday February 9th our field equaled our record of 164 players and the field moved excep onally on me. The last group took 4.5 hours. This is a big improvement. On Wednesday, February 14, we played our first away game for the year at the Noosa Golf Club. Weather condi ons were extremely uncomfortable with high humidity. Never the less we did bring home some of the bacon on offer. George McCarthy and Les Heywood both had 38 points, George Duncan 36 points, Ian Black and Howard Murray 35 points, Ma hew McKiernan 34 points and Varmi Geyl 35 points. Peter Ryan and Ray Harvey scored N.T.P. on 10 and 12 respec vely. Congratula ons to you all a er playing in such hot condi ons. (The editor, perhaps feeling a li le faint, met the devil on his way back to hell to cool off!} Just a reminder that we have a team playing in a two-man district event at Maroochy River on Friday, February 23. On Monday we play our second away game at Woodford; details are with Captain Phil. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to members who, due to health reasons, are unable to play. Just remember play golf as long as you can!!!! John 11

Where do old vets go when they die? VETERANS VOICE Cont Back in December we lost a vet who hadn t been a member for long but had already established himself as good golfing company. Those of us who knew him find it difficult to accept he s not s ll around. I refer to one Richard Cou s, a lad from the West like Noel Laverty - Dalby boys, both of them. Richard always had a yarn to tell and if there was a laugh it was more o+en than not on him. Coffee with friends during his long ba le with illness never touched on his troubles and was always just an enjoyable get together either solving world problems or exchanging golfing anecdotes. He could always find something to smile about - even in pallia ve care and in pain there was s ll a wry smile for a visitor. Richard served his country in the navy and was involved in several roles with the insurance company, Na onal Mutual. He loved his family first, always, but found a large place in his heart for golf, cryp c crosswords and the odd pple of his home made rum. His family will have this plaque at Gregson & Weight in his honour but his golfing mates will remember him on course. Much of that golf was played at Redcliffe. When Richard s father died, we followed his instruc ons and spread his ashes at a lovely spot on the course. Later, when a good friend and colleague called it a day, we added his ashes and recently, some of Richard s ashes joined them. Redcliffe members o+en swear they can hear argument and laughter emana ng from that spot as they play the 16th hole. The picture bo om le+ shows a toast being made with a tot of Cou s rum. That was all solemn and sincere but being mere males there had to be a touch of irreverence. Who s next? is the cap on of the pic on the right. 12
