SPARTANS AT THE REGIONALS The San José State women s golf team is making its 23rd appearance at an NCAA Regional as the team travels to Columbus, Ohio, for the NCAA Columbus Regional hosted by The Ohio State University, May The 18 teams will play three rounds on the Scarlet Course at The Ohio State Golf Club. The par-72 course will play at 6,416/6,349 yards. The top-six teams and topthree individuals (not on an advancing team) after the third round advance to the national championships, May 19-24, at the Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. 2 San José State Women s Golf SPARTAN LINEUP: San José State will travel the same lineup that has played in all 10 tournaments - My Leander, Abegail Arevalo, Franziska Friedrich, Alexandra Cooper and Elizabeth Schultz. SAN JOSE STATE AT REGIONALS: The Spartans are making their 23rd appearance at an NCAA Regional and only the third appearance in a regional in the Eastern Time Zone (2001, 2015, 2017). San José State has won at least a share of two regional titles & Individually, Madeleine Ziegert is the only Spartan to ever win a regional title. She was the co-medalist at the 2010 West Regional held at the Stanford Golf Course. SPARTANS LIKE SCARLET: San José State has played three times in the postseason on the Scarlet Course at The Ohio State Golf Club. The team played at the National Championships in 1986 (6th place), 1991 (2nd place), and 1997 (2nd place). The 1991 team finished tied for first with UCLA after four rounds but lost in a one-hole playoff to the Bruins. The Spartan team featured LPGA players Pat Hurst and Tracy Hanson, Nicole Horner, Lisa Walton and Ninni Sterner. The 1997 team lost by two shots to Arizona State. Former Spartan and LPGA player Janice Moodie finished second at the 1997 Championship. SPARTAN COACHING STAFF: Head coach John Dormann is in his 12th year at the helm of the women s program and his19th season affiliated with the San José State golf programs. Dormann was the assistant for both the men s and women s teams from October 1998 through 2005, and was named the women s head coach in April Last week, his conference peers selected him as the Mountain West Coach of the Year. He has received Coach of the Year honors four times. San José State Hall of Fame member Dana (Lofland) Dormann serves as the associate head coach for the program. She is a three-time All-American and a member of San José State s first national championship MOUNTAIN WEST HONORS: San José State women s golfer My Leander was named the MW Women s Golfer of the Year, Spartan head coach John Dormann the MW Women s Golf Coach of the Year and Abegail Arevalo received second team All-MW honors for the season. Leander also was named a first team All-MW honoree for the second consecutive year. Nationally, she is ranked 23rd on Golfstat and 21st on Golfweek. She leads the conference with a stroke average, the best in school history. Leander won the Ptarmigan Ram Classic and the Meadow Club Intercollegiate, finished in the top-10 in eight of her 10 tournaments played this season and has shot 16 of her 27 rounds under par. She was honored as MW Women s Golfer of the Week three times this season and was the September Golfer of the Month. Dormann received his fourth Coach of the Year recognition after receiving the honor in 2006, 2009 and 2012 (co-coach) when San José State was a member of the Western Athletic Conference. In his 19th year at San José State, Dormann has coached this year s Spartans to a #37 ranking in Golfstat and a #34 ranking in Golfweek. The team started the year by winning the Ptarmigan Ram Classic, won The Gold Rush to end February and finished third at last week s MW Championship. He will lead the Spartans to the program s 23rd appearance at an NCAA Regional when the team plays at the NCAA Columbus Regional May Arevalo was voted to the second team All-MW, her first all-conference honor of her career. She has a stroke average and finished third at the 2017 MW Championship where she tied her career best with a four-under 68 in the final round. Arevalo has shot three rounds under par and five rounds of par over her 27 rounds this year. Leander and Dormann are the first Spartans to receive MW Women s Golf Player and Coach of the Year honors since San José State joined the conference for the school year. The 17 par rounds is the most in the last 19 years, while 26 rounds under par is the second-highest number. My Leander leads the team in both categories this season, shooting 16 of her 27 rounds under par and six rounds of par. 4 San José State Women s Golf John Dormann Head Coach Mountain West Women s Golf Coach of the Year Continuing to keep the Spartan name among national contenders, John Dormann is in his 12th season as the San José State University women s golf head coach. In his 19th season affiliated with the San José State golf programs, Dormann was the assistant for both the men s and women s teams from October 1998 through 2005 when he took over as the head coach for both teams. Dormann was named the women s head coach in April This season, Dormann led the team to a top-40 ranking in Golfstat and Golfweek and two tournaments wins at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic and The Gold Rush. He guided My Leander, the Mountain West Women s Golf Player of the Year, to one of the best seasons in school history as she enters regional play with a stroke average, the best in school history. Leander was a first team All-MW selection, while Abegail Arevalo was selected as a second team All-MW honoree. For all of his efforts, Dormann s peers voted him the Mountain West Women s Golf Coach of the Year. As head coach, Dormann has guided two Spartan teams to berths at the NCAA Division I Women s Golf Championships in Athens, Ga., and 2010 in Wilmington, N.C. The 2013 team shot the best single-round score in school history with a 284 in the first round. The four-under par score found the team tied for first place with eventual champion Southern California after the first round. San José State finished 19th at the 2013 championship. Under his tutelage, the Spartan team played at nine NCAA Regional Championships, won the 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 Western Athletic Conference Championships, captured 11 in-season tournament titles and been ranked in the top-30 of the Golf- Stat rankings. The team won four regular season titles along with the WAC Championship. Former Spartan Erica Moston won the individual WAC title twice (2007 & 2009). Dormann has recruited effectively and honed the games of young talents into tournament-proven skilled players. The three-time WAC Coach of the Year (2006, 2009, 2012) coached two WAC champions including Moston, and three WAC Freshmen of the Year including Regan De Guzman. San José State players have received 18 first team and 16 second-team all-conference honors with Dormann as head coach. As proficient in the classroom as on the golf course, the team received the Order of Spartan Team GPA award for the highest combined team grade-point average for the fall and spring semesters. As the assistant coach for the men s and women s programs, the Spartans women s teams finished in the top-20 at the 1999 through 2001 NCAA Championships including a 15th place finish in San José State men s and women s golfers received All-WAC first or second-team recognition 24 times while he was the assistant coach. Ashley Gomes, a 2004 honorable mention All-American, was the 2004 WAC Champion and Player of the Year. In the classroom, Spartan golfers received nine Academic All-MW honors and 20 Academic All-WAC awards, while three have received four Mountain West Scholar Athlete recognitions. Ten golfers were awarded national awards for academic excellence from the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA). In addition to building a national championship-caliber team, we want to develop a program and student-athletes that represent the best in San José and the university, says the Spartans coach. Before coming on board with the Spartans, Dormann was a professional caddy on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour. He worked for Meg Mallon, the 1991 LPGA Player of the Year and two-time U.S. Open champion, and his wife, Dana Dormann, when she, too, was one of the LPGA s top players of the 1990 s. Though Dana no longer competes as a LPGA touring pro on a regular basis, the Dormanns have reunited as player and caddy at three U.S. Open Championships. The native of Daly City, Calif., is a 1979 graduate of Riordan High School in San Francisco, Calif. A 1989 graduate of San José State, he majored in social studies. John and Dana reside in Pleasanton, Calif., with their two sons, William, a senior at the University of California-Berkeley, and Jason, a sophomore at Foothill High School and All-Star baseball player.

5 San José State Women s Golf Dana Dormann Associate Head Coach Dana Dormann joined the San Jose State University coaching staff in 2005 and is in her 13th season with the Spartans. After four seasons as the assistant coach, she was promoted to associate head coach in A three-time All-American, Dormann played on the San Jose State University women s golf teams during the 1985 through 1988 seasons. She was a member of the Spartans 1987 NCAA Championship team. Dormann was a four-time tournament winner and the 1987 Pacific Coast Athletic Association Player of the Year. Her stroke average for 141 rounds of college competition puts her in the top-10 all-time on the San Jose State list. Dormann was the 1985 U.S. Junior and Junior World champion. The win at the U.S. Girls Junior Championship earned her an invitation to the 1986 U.S. Open. The native of Oxnard, Calif., began her professional career on the Women Professional Golfers European Tour (WPGET). In her first LPGA event, the 1991 Oldsmobile LPGA Classic, she finished in second place. She won the 1992 Las Vegas LPGA International, birdieing her last hole, and won the 1993 McCall s LPGA Classic in Stratton Mountain, Vermont. Through 2011, she played in 228 LPGA Tour events with 27 top-10 finishes and ranks among the top 150 on the all-time career earnings list. Dormann was also a member of the 1992 and 1993 U.S. Nicheri Cup teams that competed against teams from Japan. She was the 1993 Most Valuable Golfer of the competition. She was one of five Spartan All-Americans to make the cut at the 2006 U.S. Open and has played in 14 U.S. Women s Open Championships. She won the 2005 LPGA T-and-CP Championship for teaching and club professionals. That win garnered her an invitation to the 2006 LPGA Championship. Besides her San Jose State coaching duties, she is a teaching professional at the Pleasanton (Calif.) Golf Academy. Over the past few years, Dormann has played a few tournaments on The Legends Tour, the official Senior Tour of the LPGA. In 2016, she finished tied for eighth at one-over 145 at The Legends Championship in French Lick, Ind. She has played at the championship three times.
