4 Frost Delay Procedure: During frost delays, all players are required to stay off the practice putting green, chipping green, all parts of the course in an effort to prevent damage to the turf. Golf play shall not start until you are officially notified by the Golf Shop staff or the greens superintendent. When there is a light frost and play begins, all players with a registered starting time will start in the usual order on a delayed basis. When it is obvious that there is a heavy frost and long delay, play may begin with a shotgun start. If in doubt about the status of play, please check the Course Conditions/Weather page on the website or call the Golf Shop. We will try to have an estimated starting time as early as possible, but cannot make an accurate assessment until daylight. (Please keep in mind determining when the frost will lift is not an exact science...estimated starting time may change as the morning progresses). 5 AWGA Corner with Sue O Donnell It is hard to believe, but our 2018 golf season has come to an end. Many Arrowhead Golf Club members contributed their time and talents to give our lady s the best possible golfing experience over the last year. Your efforts made all the difference! We can be proud of our league and our members. Phyllis Millan, our outgoing AWGA President, is especially appreciated. Phyllis s introduction to golf began in 1991 when she met Mike Millan, whose passion for the game became hers as well. Phyllis and Mike have golfed in Scotland at St. Andrews, Turnberry, Carnoustie, and Gullane. Locally, Bandon Dunes is a personal favorite golf destination. When not golfing, Phyllis enjoys grandchildren, gardening, volunteering at Tualatin National Wildlife Refuge, birding, and hiking. Phyllis gives 110% to everything she cares about. AWGA is fortunate to be one of her passions. As the cold season approaches, many AWGA ladies will be heading south to warm and sunny destinations. We wish them safe travels. For the rest of us, Hawaiian warmth awaits! Diane Taylor and her team of elves are busy planning a festive Mele Kalikimaka Christmas Luncheon for all Arrowhead Women. ** Mark your calendars for 11:30 am, December 6, 2018** As we approach this season of gratitude for family and friends, let us hope Mother Nature gives us a winter suitable for some rounds of golf. Bundle up and come play with us! ~Sue O Donnell, AWGA President AWGA Hole-in-One Procedure AWGA is pleased to recognize our ladies who have earned this special honor of a Hole-In-One. When you score a Hole-In-One, please inform the Golf Shop; they will arrange for your Hole-In-One Burger (courtesy of Arrowhead) and your cash (if you have paid into the holein-one fund). Please let the Vice President of AWGA know about your accomplishment. The VP will notify our OGA representative so they can acknowledge your ace as well. The VP will need your name, Hole #, date of your hole-in-one, club used, and distance of the shot. AWGA will add your name to our Hole-In-One plaque in the Members Room to commemorate your achievement Page 5

6 President s Corner with Jerry Calvin What a fabulous month October was with some of the best Fall weather we have ever seen. We were blessed with the perfect climate for the greens to recover quickly from aeration and most of the fairways were lush with plenty of roll. Now, welcome to November, as we see the leaves falling in full force. Please remember: there is no leaf rule in golf. If you lose a golf ball, it is exactly that a lost ball, which requires a stroke and distance penalty. We have also started playing OGA preferred lies, which allows you to lift-clean-place your golf ball. We had a few minor tournaments this past month with the Men s Club. Congrats to the winners of the 1-Gross & 2-Net Game: Pat O Donnell, Mark Sullivan and Don Macauley with a 199. We also had the Men s & Women s Mixed Scramble with Chris Oviatt, Bob Schroeder, Don Meyer, and Leslie Romanio winning the gross side with a 61 and Shawn Alldritt, Buddy Luft, Krystal Stoneking, and Craig Daufel winning low net with a We have a few more events coming up, with the Men s Club Fall Finale on November 10 th Please pick your foursome and sign up in the Golf Shop. We will also have the 3-Club Tournament after Thanksgiving. Also as a reminder, The Civil War will be played prior to the actual football game, so get ready to pick your team: duck or beaver! The Men s Club Board will be meeting on November 3, at 7:30 am, at Legend s, to discuss next year s tournament schedule. Please plan on attending or contact a board member with any suggestions on what we can do to make the tournament schedule more fun or appealing. Please remember to leave the course in better shape than you found it, replace divots, fix ball marks and use sand after you replaced the divot. ~Jerry Calvin, Men s Club President Saturday Men s Club Games Throughout the winter months, the Saturday Men s Club games will be played from a rotation of the Blue Tees, White Plus Tees, and White Tees. Each day s tee will be at the Golf Shop s discretion based on weather conditions. 7 Around the Greens with Adam Vidourek To say the least, we had an absolutely beautiful October. It was perfect golf weather, with many days reaching the mid- to upper-70 s, sunshine, and no frost delays!!! I certainly hope you were able to take advantage of the weather and come out to play some golf. If you were at the course, you were treated to some of the most vibrantly colorful views around. As the leaves turned their fall colors, they stayed on the trees a bit longer this season due to a lack of storms helping them fall off. Wow were they pretty! Now, after a few stormy days, many of them have fallen from the trees. It as an intense fall rate for a few days, which made for a LOT of leaf cleanup for the crew. We are doing our best to get the leaves picked up, with a priority on the areas that come into play most. On a side note- once the rain really sets in and you don t feel like going out and getting wet, remember that the indoor golf simulator is available for you to use. I have played on it several times and it is a blast! It also has my second favorite course of all time: Muirfield Village in Ohio. Muirfield Village hosted me for a 4.5 month internship just out of college. I have played the real thing, and the simulator brought back some good memories, just like I was there. It has many other world-renown courses, too. Hope to see you out on the course, or in the simulator, or in the restaurant, or in the pool. ~Adam Vidourek, Superintendent The Coach s Corner with John Cassidy We re getting into the time of the year where the weather is starting to become colder and wetter, and the more it does so, the more it will have an effect on your game. Higher humidity in the air, the shorter your ball will fly. Colder air coupled with more humid air, your ball will fly even shorter yet. On top of this, our fairways and approaches will become softer as increased rainfall saturated the ground. All of these factors combine to make the course play longer. However, on the bright side, the softer greens make it easier to take aim at the pins. So as the length adds some difficulty, the greens softness takes a little away. It also changes how we might play certain shots in and around the greens. You may decide to throw a pitch up near the hole instead of playing a bump-and-run, as you would in the summer. You may have to use less loft than normal on those bump-and-runs or long chips because the ground is a little softer. At the end of the day, golf is about adapting to the course, the elements, and your game. The better you can adapt, the more you ll be able to get out of your game. If you can learn how and what adaptions to make (and when to make them) you ll be on your way to playing your best golf. See you around the Club! ~John Cassidy, Lead Teaching Professional Page 7
