1 WELCOME Ladies to the April Newsletter and hoping everyone enjoyed their Easter activities surrounded by family and friends, indulging in lots of hot cross buns and yummy chocolate Easter eggs. It has however been enormously beneficial with the fairways looking so lush and green and our water catchments lovely and full for the Winter months ahead. MARCH QUALIFYING EVENTS: On March 24 th the Final of the J P Mullholland Cup was played in great conditions and our congratulations go to both Therese Tathem and Diana Wilson for their previous wins to make it to the Final. The Junior Committee is working to develop the skills of the juniors involved in the program and we are seeking your help. 5 NEW LADY MEMBERS: On behalf of the Ladies Committee and lady members, we wish to extend a very warm welcome this month to three new ladies, Bronwyn Hope, Kirsty Veron, Tracey Noble and Cath Alley who have joined our friendly club and we hope they enjoy playing in the many and varied daily competitions available to them. TROPHIES TO BE COLLECTED: There are a number of prizes to be collected from the office. Please see a committee member or Peter in the office for collection. Uncollected prizes are waiting for the following winners: J Spencer R Yeo W Edmiston K Mayes S McLean G Blackmore x 2 K McCloy C Nash T Noble M York A Corcoran SPEED OF PLAY: Please consider your speed of play. There are several things that each of us can do to keep the pace of play fair for everyone. Each player in a group should take their turn to step up to the tee in short order while the others are marking cards. Take your turn stepping up smartly and don't leave it to the same person each time. Think about your choice of club as you approach your ball and keep moving to the ball if you are a reasonable distance from a player and not likely to affect their strike or place yourself in any danger. Be ready to play in turn. If you are losing the group in front then the two players who have finished putting should leave the green and move to the tee block to begin the next hole. Adopting some or all of these practices really helps to keep the pace of play a pleasant experience for everyone. Please give consideration to others enjoyment of the game. GET WELL WISHES: On behalf of the Ladies Committee and lady members we wish to send warm Get Well Wishes to Pam Nicholson who is recovering from an operation and we hope to see her fully recovered and back on the fairways soon. We also hope that Denis is proving to be a great nurse!! 5
6 GOLFER OF THE MONTH!: On Tuesday 21 st April, Kate Oudenryn had a day to remember whilst playing in the ladies comp. It was her first day of playing in Div. 1 with a Handicap of 22, she scooped the pool by collecting the Div 1 WTA, the Div 1 Approach and best of all, she had an EAGLE on the 7 th Hole. WELL DONE Kate!! EXTRA EARLY TEE TIMES FOR SAT: The Ladies Committee decided at the April meeting that the two early Saturday tee times which were being trialled for the month of April will remain available until the end of May, 2015 and the usage will be assessed at the next meeting. These new times are on Saturday mornings at 6.35am and 6.42am which will allow 8 more ladies to opt for early play on Saturdays. 8 RULE OF THE MONTH: BALL UNPLAYABLE (Rule 28) The player may deem her ball unplayable at any place on the course, except when the ball is in a water hazard. The player is the sole judge as to whether her ball is unplayable. If the player deems her ball to be unplayable, she must, under penalty of one stroke: Proceed under the stroke and distance provision of Rule 27-1 by playing a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played or Drop a ball behind the point where the ball lay keeping that point directly between the hole and spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind that point the ball may be dropped; or Drop a ball within two club-lengths of the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole. If the unplayable ball is in a bunker, the player may proceed under Clause a, b, or c. If she elects to proceed under Clause b or c, a ball must be dropped in the bunker. When proceeding under this Rule, the player may lift and clean her ball or substitute a ball. Penalty for breach of rule: Matchplay Loss of hole; Stroke play two strokes. 8
9 Spirit of the Game Honesty, integrity, courtesy: three words that have come to represent the spirit in which the game of golf is played. Part of that spirit sits beneath the term, etiquette and part of it relates to the Rules of Golf. But the Spirit of the Game goes much deeper than just those two tangible terms. It is something that every golfer should develop an innate sense of, something that is born of golf s unparalleled history, and something which lifts golf, one could argue, above other sports. Whether it s through divot and pitch-mark repair, or simply through silence on the tee, the spirit of the game dictates that players make sure they give others on the course, often opponents, a fair chance to play the best shot they can. For most of us, the game of golf is self-regulating. There is seldom a referee present so we are reliant upon our own honest adherence to the Rules in order to enjoy the game. As a result we are all occasionally forced to call a penalty on ourselves for infringements which often will go unnoticed by everyone else. Honesty, integrity, courtesy: three words that have come to represent...the game of golf. 9
