You are like a warm and cozy pair of house slippers. Thank all of you for your kindness and support. My board members worked hard to make our group what it is. You, all of you, make Teesters the fantastic group of lady golfers that you are. Some of our new members came to me this year and thanked us for making them feel so welcome in the group. I will be lost for a while not having the reins in my hands, but my wonderful memories of the past two years will see me through the transition. Barbara has her board ready and is making plans for her term. I know you will give her your support. And once again, I congratulate the Mountain Niners on their new independence. The time has flown by for me as I have looked forward to each and every Monday and the opportunity to golf with such a great group of ladies. Our Second Annual Hot August Swingers Tournament was a swinging success with 52 participants having a great 9 holes of golf followed by an outstanding dinner at Crosby s. Comments for our players have prompted us to make plans to enlarge our tournament next year to 18 holes. Our ladies went all out with their creative soups and salads and everyone had a great time. Thank you so much, KC, for allowing us to enjoy your home. For our final Monday playday of the 2009 season, Mary Hubbard will once again welcome us into her lovely golf course home for our last potluck this year. Mary, thank you in advance for hosting the potluck and for always stepping up to help. September brings the last of our scheduled tee times but there will still be many great Tahoe days to make your own tee times and get in all the golf you can before the Mountain Course closes on October 4th and the Championship Course closes on October 11th. I just want to take a minute to thank all the Niners for filling up our tee times this season and simply for being such a great group of ladies to play golf and have fun with. Thank you for allowing me to represent the Niners as Chairman for the past 2 years, and I look forward to being your president for the next 2 years. Thank you all for the lovely star. I will find a special place in the new house to display it. I am quite sure I will make a very good use of the Pottery Barn gift card as I pick up some great things for the house. The Niners want to thank Angie Rodriguez and each member of her great staff in the pro shop, the cart staff and everyone working hard all over the course for always being so helpful and courteous. Mary Hubbard, thank you for working to make it a great day of golf and fun and even prizes, too. The Closing Luncheon served as an end to the Teester Niners and a new beginning for the Mountain Niners Golf Club. There have been so many ladies hard at work writing by-laws, standing rules and getting our application ready to send out. Thanks especially to Mary Hubbard, Polly Wolfe, Linda Woglom and all the ladies who served on the by-laws committee for a job well done. Our new club is a reality and it will take each and every one of us to make it a success, so get ready to volunteer to help and have a lot of fun on our new journey. Handicap Information Deb Patchett, Chairman This is one last reminder to post all of your scores over the winter months. Any scores posted at your winter clubs should automatically be routed to us. If you are playing at a course that does not have a computer, just go to on your home computer and post there. It might be a good idea to keep a written record of your scores and each month when you get your revised handicap from GHIN, check to see if all rounds posted. After all, you don t want that good score to disappear. This year we purchased new Teester red tehema shirts. There are still 5 shirts available for $33. If you are interested in purchasing one, please contact Norma Buller at I want to answer a question I have gotten a lot. Why don t I shoot to my handicap? According to the USGA, you should only be playing to your handicap 20-25% of the time. This is about 2 times out of 10 rounds. If you post every time you play, your handicap will reflect your true ability. And... as an added note, only 1% of all golfers actually play par or better.

4 !"#"$%&'(#)*$+%,-*# Rules Corner Dawn Maggio, Chairman During recent team play, one of our members hit a ball which looked like it went right down the middle of the fairway, so no thought of hitting a provisional in case it was lost. Subsequently, the ball could not be found. The rest of the foursome said they would continue to search for the ball and for her to go back and hit a provisional, which she did. Immediately after hitting the provisional, her ball was located. The question is, could she have played the original ball? Under Rule 27-2, you must announce you are playing a provisional ball, and you must play it before leaving the teeing ground. Even though the first ball was found, the fact that she went back and hit what she thought was a provisional ball, that ball became the ball in play, and she was hitting stroke number three. Rules Corner, along with Pin High is officially shutting down the for season, and I want to thank those of you who have told me how helpful it has been to you over these past few months. It s good to know the rules and it can often save you strokes. If unsure of a rule, look it up. If someone tells you a rule that doesn t sound right, ask them to show it to you in the Rules Book. Speaking of the Rules Book, spend some time reviewing it over the winter months, and if offered the opportunity to attend any rules clinics, do take advantage of them. It s been a pleasure being your rules chairman these past 2 years. Membership 2010 It has been decided that beginning in 2010, we will reinstitute a Social Membership option. This is reflected in the revised membership application in this newsletter. The dues for a Social Member is less, as the GHIN dues and Hole-in-One charges are not included. This option in only available to current and past members who want to belong to Teesters but no longer play golf. The USGA Course Rating System According to the official USGA Course Rating System Guide the system was implemented by the USGA on January 1, 1987 as a refinement of the existing USGA Handicap System. (it) assists in addressing the problem of portability of handicaps by adjusting a player s Handicap Index according to the relative difficulty of the golf course being played. Course Rating A course rating will usually range between 66 and 77 and is based on the expected performance of a scratch golfer. So if par is 72 and a rating is 74.5 on a specific set of tees, a scratch golfer would be expected to shoot a 74.5 from those tees. Slope Rating A slope rating describes the level of difficulty for a bogey golfer compared to the course rating. A bogey golfer is defined as a player who has a handicap of about 20 and can hit tee shots an average of 200 yards. A course of standard difficulty has a slope rating of 113. A lower number would indicate an easier course, a higher number a more difficult course. Slope rating ranges from 55 to 155.

We would like to have had more couples, but the tournament was enjoyable and the buffet at Crosby s was great as always. Championship Course Play Days Barbara Weisend, Chairman Sweeps winners for the entire 2009 summer are now posted on our Championship Course bulletin board. At our closing luncheon on September 10th, the following awards were presented. To earn low gross or low net, a player must play with the Teesters six times on the Championship Course. Most Birdies: Joanne Oberly 4 Low Net: Gerri Francis 67 on July 31st Low Gross: Sally Huzyak 87 on July 1st Remember that we have tee times on the Championship Course all the way through October 11th. Have a fabulous Fall and enjoy your winter. High Sierra Team Play Norma Buller, Chairman Teesters played in five High Sierra Team tournaments at Silver Oaks, Hidden Valley, Washoe/Reno, Genoa, and Wolf Run and will play Dayton Valley on October 7th. We are currently in the middle of the pack. Players who competed were Margit Deuerling, Ann Dentz, Sandy Schell, Barbara Weisend, Gerri Francis, Jill Straub, Marcia Chambers, Ramona Smith, Marilyn Gareffa, Kelly Cates, Sherry Valenta, Janet Myrick, Sally Huzyak, Cindy McCaffrey and Norma Buller, All the ladies did a fine job and I hope they enjoyed themselves. 6 august 2009 Grilled Artichokes from Sally Huyzak 4 Artichokes 1/4 cup each balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, water, olive oil 1 tbl minced fresh ginger Slice artichoke tops off crosswise and trim sharp leaf tips with scissors. Boil or steam until artichoke bottoms pierce easily. When cool., cut each choke in half lengthwise and scrape out fuzzy center and any purple tipped leaves. Place artichoke halves in ziplock bag. Mix remaining ingredients, pour into ziplock bag and seal. Turn bag to coat sides and marinate 8-24 hours, turning bag occasionally. Shake off marinate and save. BBQ cut side down 5-7 minutes on grill. Flip chokes over and grill 5-7 minutes. Flip chokes over and grill 3-4 minutes longer or until tips are lightly charred. Arrange chokes on platter and drizzle remaining marinade over chokes. Serve hot or room temperature.
