1 Volume 18, Issue 10 October 2016 Trick or treating comes from the Middle- Age practice of the poor dressing up in costumes and going around door to door during Hallowmas begging for food or money in exchange for prayers. The food given was often a Soul Cake, which was a small round cake which represented a soul being freed from Purgatory when the cake was eaten. Orange and black are Halloween colors because orange is associated with the Fall harvest and black is associated with darkness and death. There are no words in the dictionary that rhyme with orange, the color of pumpkin. 5 More Golf News... How to recover from a bad tee shot We all wish we could hit every fairway, unfortunately we are all acceptable to a wayward tee shot. How we proceed after hitting a tee shot in the woods is a key to scoring success. The easiest thought is to hit the ball hard and hope that it misses the trees and/ or bunkers. To eliminate the big score on a hole after a bad tee shot is to play conservative. The following are points that will assist you on a better score: Know what you are capable of doing Pick a club that will allow you to feel comfortable Pick a yardage from the hole and hit the recovery shot to that point Example: if you like a 80 yard shot then layup to that yardage to give you full shot into the green Patrick Richardson, PGA Head Golf Professional As always, if you have a question about this topic please stop by the golf shop or schedule a lesson to learn how to be successful at the recovery shot Special notice 2017 Senior Club Champion Terry Montford # 1 Ball in golf...and used by many of our champions at The Wilmington Island Club! 6 Junior Golf News... FUTURE STARS Program We are proud to continue the "Future Stars/PGA Junior League". After reviewing the success of this program from last year and feedback from parents/children blending the two made sense. The program will provide the necessities to learn the game during clinic time and put the learning to the test on the golf course in a fun/exciting format similar to the PGA Junior League season. "Future Stars/PGA Junior League" September / October Schedule September 9th (Saturday) 2:00-4:00 clinic/pga junior league match September 23 rd (Saturday) 2:00-4:00 clinic/pga junior league match October 7 th (Saturday) 2:00-4:00 clinic/pga junior league match October 14 th (Saturday) 2:00-4:00 clinic/pga junior league match "Future Stars" Ages 16 & under - all skill levels Fee: $125 includes clinics and matches Where: All clinics and matches will be conducted at the Wilmington Island Club Please invite friends and let's have fun!! Please let us know if your child is planning on participating. Junior Golf Update Congrats to the WIC 16&under PGA Junior League team for finishing 3 rd in the state championship. Team members: Vincent Dobbins, Aidan Ganley Jake Harnan, and Ben Wood represented WIC at the state championship. The team won the city championship for the third time in a row. Will Randall, Nathan Sheldon, Edwin Shepherd and Noly Tran contributed throughout the season as well. The 13&under WIC Ross team won the Savannah East Division. Team members: John Avino, Chad Chadwell, Peyton Cromwell, Bear Dollander, Cameron Sheldon, Drew Sheldon, Jake Sheldon, Maddie Sheldon, Bryn Sorge, Noah Sterrett, Lily Tran and Noah Williams. The 13&under Blue Heron team showed a lot of improvement during the season. The following players represented the Blue Heron team: Jac Cetti, Alex Dao, Grant Hunter, Nik Manocha, Sebastian Nanez, Connor Pina, Noah Russell, Caroline Ryan, Mary Elizabeth Semones, Ryan Shirley, Dylan Sullivan and Noah Williams. Chad Chadwell, Bear Dollander, Maddie Sheldon and Bryn Sorge participated as an All-Star for the 13& Under Savannah League. WAY TO GO WIC!! 7 Tennis Amy Bradley, Director of Tennis Wilmington Island Club/Weston Savannah USPTA Elite Professional (P1) Tennis Tips and Tricks What if your toss is always off and thus your serve is always off? Here are several tennis tips that may help. Do not hold the ball in your hand when you toss; hold it in your fingertips. Begin the toss in front of your legs. Toss the ball up and forward toward where you imagine your point of contact. Do not flick the ball with your wrist as you let go; and, remember to release the ball with your hand at as high a spot as is comfortable, at least as high as your head. If there is a short distance between the release point and the contact point, there is less of a chance that the ball will go off course. Make certain to toss the ball only as far as the height at which you ll make contact, or a few inches higher. Higher tosses are more likely to stray, and even when they don t, they re more difficult to strike. Finally, reach after the ball with the arm with which you tossed it. These tennis tips should help you keep your toss on target. Here s the final bit of advice among the tennis tips for serving. If your opponent appears worn out after a long point, and is still catching his or her breathe, aim your next serve directly at his or her body. An opponent who is out of breathe will often make the return without taking required adjustment steps for returning a body serve. Aiming the ball at the receiver will often thus result in a weak return that then allows you to hit an aggressive shot back. This is among the easiest of tennis tips to ensure winning an extra point.
