Newsletter - May 2016 (Issue 05) KIRKCUDBRIGHT GOLF CLUB Follow us on Facebook: Kirkcudbright Golf Club info@kirkcudbrightgolf.co.uk Captain s Desk Our season is now in full swing and I am delighted at the number of golfers playing our wonderful course. There were many compliments from golfers playing in our first Open competition, significantly from lower handicap golfers who enjoyed the challenge. Congratulations to Bob Patterson and his team for an excellent competition, this was Bobs first Open as Match Secretary. The new catering team have settled in well and I ask that you give support to the functions organised (Ed - see the item on Steak Nights at the end of the Newsletter). These help to bind our club together and give the clubhouse a real purpose. May I remind all that we are in changing times, both with the demographic of our members and visitors. We desperately need to cater for all groups. We have a few clubhouse members and hopefully we can grow this part of our business. It is worth pointing out that we do operate a club license so non-members need to be signed in by a member or take out club house membership. Club House membership is 10 a year and forms are available at the Office. We welcome Ian Senior as House Convener and thank Alastair Crawford for his sterling work. Looking to the month ahead I am amazed at how busy each section of the club is going to be. I will try to keep you up to date in my weekly mail shot and if you want any intimation sent to members please contact me by phone, or around the club house. Well done to those successful playing away from home. I have arranged a number of reductions at other clubs to allow you to sample days away. The list is ever gowning and posted on the club notice board. I have also asked that a copy of our insurance on your behalf is included in this newsletter. I have a vendetta this year regarding PITCH MARKS so beware I am watching!! Social media is important and you can help. Comment, like and share, allowing other to experience the diversity of our club. (Continued ) 1
Lastly my ongoing thanks to all who help, office, Ambassadors, painters, brusher-uppers, gardeners, divot fillers, competition organisers, junior helpers, buggy maintenance, social media, if you pick up litter, being nice to visitors, the list goes on and on. Thank you. Maurice. (Club Captain) LADIES NEWS The 2nd May is the annual day trip. This year we have twenty-five ladies going to Brampton. A few ladies have been there before but the majority have not. It is getting to the time of year when the members are getting out and about to play at different courses and taking part in competitions. Always a good way of seeing other places at little cost if you have entered a competition. It is not a case of not being good enough just get a friend to enter with you and go! It gives you a bit of confidence and you get to meet lots of people from other clubs. Our Open Texas Scramble is coming up (Sunday 15th May). I hope there will be many teams entered from our own club. The teams do not have to be made up of all Kirkcudbright members. You can ask friends from other clubs if you wish. For that event we are hoping to have new tablecloths for the lounge. We are hoping to fund them from the Ladies Committee, but if anyone would like to give a contribution, it would be very much appreciated. These table cloths would then be used only for special occasions in the clubhouse. A trophy has been brought back to be used for the monthly medal for a 9-hole competition. It is hoped to encourage more members who feel eighteen holes are too much will take part in this. On the intervening Tuesdays it is hoped to present a spoon to the winning 9 holer Isobel Watson has been working hard at getting the Get into Golf started. One session happened at the end of April with three times a week going through May. Each person going for six lessons followed by three rounds of golf with a member and then one month s free membership. About 25 people have been signed up. It is hoped that some of these people will start playing golf on a regular basis and indeed come to Kirkcudbright to play. If you know of anyone who may be interested, please contact Isobel Watson or David Broadfoot. Mary Robertson EGGS NEWS The EGGS kicked off their match play season with a 5-3 home victory over the Eden Mallards from Carlisle. However, we were made aware of the power and destruction of the Winter floods when our guests described the devastation wrought on their Course, the Clubhouse and the machinery sheds by the River Eden. We wish the owners well in their efforts to restore some semblance of normality and maybe there is some merit in having a Course laid out over the side of a hill by our wise designers. We celebrated Peter Roberts victory in the April Medal illustrating the merits of his warm weather. training the previous week in sunny Spain and another welcome victor showing of the prowess of his new hip was Jack McCreadie in the Coca-Cola Cup played over the County Course in Dumfries. 2
24 members of the Eggs played for the Coca Cola Cup at the Dumfries & County Golf Club. We received a great welcome from the staff and the course was in excellent condition, all agreed that the greens were exceptional, the Professional was kind enough to donate a box of golf balls as a prize. Winner was Jack McCreadie with 34points, second place was Collin Kennedy with 33 points and third was Tommy Learmonth with 32 points. The Eggs Captain presented the prizes after the Eggs Members had an excellent meal. JUNIOR NEWS Kirkcudbright golf club has a great history of junior golfers playing in the Scottish Boys and this year was no exception. Cameron Gray, Nathan Watson and William Squires did us proud. Pictured is Cameron holing out on the 15th green to go 2up and 3 to play in his first round match which he went on to win 3 and 1. Unfortunately the putter went cold in his second round match and he didn't make the 3rd round. Nathan played steady golf against a current internationalist and made him play under par to put him out also in the second round. William played very sensible golf on a quirky course and got on a good run to make it to the fourth round with three very convincing wins. Unfortunately, he picked up a small injury during his fourth round match but fought to the end losing out on the 18th green. Well done boys. Also pictured is our Junior vice captain Callum McMillan presenting the prizes to our Saturday morning juniors. Watching on are Eddie Carruthers and John McLellan our Saturday morning organisers. 3
HANDICAP & COMPETITION NEWS Last Sunday (24 th April) twenty of our Gents took part in our annual friendly match with our friends at Portpatrick (Dunskey) and Alistair McGowan came out on top for the Kirkcudbright side with 38 points. This friendly match has been going for more than twenty years now and remains as a popular fixture. We look forward welcoming the Dunskey members to Kirkcudbright later in the year. The Selkirk Arms Hotel Open Competition was also a great success with almost 100 players taking part; enjoying the course and the warm welcome extended at Kirkcudbright Golf Club. The winner was Phil Shortt of Dumfries & Galloway, pictured below receiving the trophy from Maurice and Bob. Remember all results are available on our website at and Don t forget to get your names up for the match-play competitions as the sheets will be coming down soon for the draws to be made. Championship Qualifying begins for the Gents this week (Wednesday 3 rd May). Preferred lies remain in place due to the wet conditions. This will be reviewed on Monday 16 th May. GET INTO GOLF We have had a great response for our Get into Golf campaign and David is running three group sessions per week, Thursdays at 5.30 p.m., Sundays at 3.30 p.m. and starting 9 th May, Mondays at 6.30 p.m. Our first session was last Thursday with 6 participants benefiting from David's expertise around the green, the most important part of the game, getting the ball in the hole! David can cope with up to eight participants in each session so we have some availability if anyone is interested. Remember, members can introduce a friend to the scheme and take part in the group coaching, only 30 for 6 one hourly sessions. So come on folks! Look on the website for details... let's Get more people into Golf! 4

STAR INTERVIEW This month, we caught up with another of our talented junior section. William Squires made it to the fourth round of the Scottish Boys Matchplay Tournament recently with some impressive golf. Here s what William had to say What s your handicap right now? 2.4 & whats the lowest it has been? 2.3 What's the best course you have played? Murcar. What course would you most like to play that you haven't? Augusta, not got that far yet. If you could only play links or parkland for the rest of your life what would you choose? Parkland. Who would you pick to hole a 6 foot putt to win you 100? Keith Munn. Best player you've played with or against? Robert Watson off +1. What has been your best moment in golf? Getting a hole in one at the 6th although I didn't know. Who would be your dream 4-ball? Me, my dad, Luke Donald, Graeme McDowell and a spectator with good eye sight. What is your favourite club in the bag? Putter. If you could change one thing about golf what would it be? A rule the stops people throwing clubs. It doesn't look good. What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given? It's not all about distance. It just helps. What's your bogey hole at Kirkcudbright? It changes every round. Do you have any golfing superstitions? Nope Away from golf, what are your other interests? Basketball, Snooker but I'm not very good, and just eating a lot. Thanks William and good luck with your golf this season. 6
May Coaching Segment with PGA Golf Professional, David Broadfoot Hi everyone, We are now into May, month 2 of the golf season. I like to call it improvement month. By now most of you will have played a fair bit of golf and will have competed in a medal or 2. You should have a fair idea about the state of your game and whether you are playing to your handicap (or better or worse than it!). If you aren't happy with your game, you need to do something about it. If you can't play to your handicap or you want to reduce it, you need to do something about it. Unfortunately, it won't just happen. Golf is more fun when you can consistently beat your handicap, not just every now and again! The worst thing you can do is leave it too late and you don't finish the season the way you want to. NOW is the time to start improving! Get in touch and we can come up with an improvement plan designed just for you. I have added a new package to my lesson menu. 'The Tour Pro Experience' this one is for the golfers who REALLY want to improve and is just as the name suggests. I will spend a lot of regular time with you, working on your game, watching/helping you practice & play, and play golf with you. Just like the Tour Professional's do with their coaches. This is what is available from a dedicated, full time coach. Not many coaches can offer this type of package. Please get in touch for more info. Thanks for reading, don't stand still with your golf game, you should always try to improve. Like the saying goes 'if you're not getting better, you're getting worse' there will always be people trying to improve all the time, sooner or later they will overtake you if you don't keep improving and moving forward. Please like my Facebook page 'David Broadfoot - PGA Golf Professional' where you will find instructional videos to help you improve your game. David Broadfoot, PGA Golf Professional 7
