South-West (GWAS) Indoor Regional Championships The GWAS Indoor Regional Championships took place on 18 th February in Weston-super-Mare and a total of 8 archers from Cleve made the trip to take part. In the Gents Compound section, Adam Shaw won the event and the title of Indoor Regional Champion! In the Gents Recurve, the highest placed Cleve archer was Alec Thomas who finished in 8 th place. He was closely followed by David Mortimer in 12 th place and former Cleve shooter Luke Jones who now shoots for Coastal Archers who finished in 13 th. In the Junior section, our new Regional Champions are Ella Shield (1 st in Girls U14 recurve) and Tallulah Kelly (1 st in Girls U14 barebow). In the Girls U18 recurve, Esme Caie finished in 2 nd and Aimee Brake in 4 th. The combined score of all four girls meant that Cleve won the Junior Team Trophy! Well done to all 4 of you! Help needed with Tree Planting Club members following the development of our new field at Moorend will be aware that some help is going to be needed to assist with planting several hundred trees. That time has come! On Friday 16 th March, Club Chair Francesca Hawker will be at the new field (see map below) marking out with sticks where the new trees (400 of them) and shrubs (100) are to go. Francesca will be there from 10am until the job is finished so any help that day would be appreciated. The planting itself will take place on Saturday and Sunday 17 th and 18 th. The start time on the Saturday is 1pm until it gets too dark. Anyone who can help on the Sunday, please contact Francesca (fhawker83@gmail.com) for further details of the arrangements. Do remember that access to the field from the A4174 ring road is currently blocked off so you will need to reach the field via the hamlet of Moorend itself.

Recent Tournament Entries On 4 th February, Deer Park hosted their WA 18m Inclusion shoot in Cheltenham. Adam Shaw, David Mortimer, Alec Thomas and Caitlin Clarke from Cleve entered this event. Adam won the Gents Compound event, David and Alex finished 4 th and 5 th respectively in the Gents Recurve and Caitlin finished 2 nd in the Ladies recurve. On Sunday 25 th David Mortimer entered the Battle of Old Basing WA 25m and WA 18m combined event and finished 28 th out of 52 participants in the Gents Recurve. Anyone entering external tournaments and who would like to see their efforts reported in a future Newsletter is encouraged to details of their efforts to the Editor or even better, a copy of the Results List as some clubs are not particularly timely with posting tournament results on their websites and your honourable Editor, as diligent as he is, does not have enough time to trawl the Internet to see what you ve been up to. Those interested in entering tournaments can find listings in the following places; Club Website Archery UK Magazine Listing tournaments within about an hour s drive of Up Yonder see Published quarterly (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) listing all tournaments within the UK Archery GB s website As per the magazine but updated more often (roughly monthly) - Brighton Bowmen s website Listing lots of national tournaments: Dates for Cleve s Open Tournaments for 2018 Spring Tournament 21 st and 22 nd April. On the first day a double 720 round (i.e. WA 70m, WA 60m and WA 50m rounds) and on the second day will be the traditional York, Hereford and Bristol rounds. Summer Tournament 21 st and 22 nd July. The first day will be a 720 ranking round followed by Olympic-style Headto-Heads. The second day will be WA 1440 and Metric rounds. Junior Tournament 2 nd June. Rounds are the Windsor-family of rounds as previous years. Entry forms for all of the above are available via the club s website ( Please do your best to support all three of your club s tournaments, whether by shooting or helping out!

Archery GB s January Challenge Those of you who are shooting Indoors at the moment may well have submitted a Portsmouth score during January for entry into Archery GB s postal competition the January Challenge. The final results are not yet out, but a draft results list is available at: A large number of Cleve shooters entered this competition and we ve seen some excellent results. The highlights to pick out were; In the beginners section (those shooting for less than a year), Iain Dale placed 50 th (out of 206) in the Gents Recurve whilst in the Ladies Recurve Caitlin Clarke placed 2 nd, Cleve Junior Floss Teague placed 48 th and Sharon Galpin placed 61 st out of 91 competitors. In the Gents Recurve event Alec Thomas finished 68 th, Cleve Junior Marco Costanza placed 76 th with David Mortimer and Cleve Junior Josh Smith finishing joint 140 th out of the massive 638 entrants. In the Ladies Recurve event, the top four shooters from Cleve all came from the Junior club with Anna Perkins in 45 th, Esme Caie in 91 st, Aimee Brake in 117 th and Ella Shield in 134 th out of 275 competitors. In the Gents Compound section, Jake Bunce finished 22 nd and Chris Jones 98 th out of 162 shooters. In the Ladies Compound section, Cleve Juniors Jasmin Williams and Sophia Boulton finished 19 th and 27 th respectively out of 51 shooters. In the Longbow section, Trevor and Ann Powell finished 101 st (out of 128) and 27 th (out of 58) in the Gents and Ladies sections respectively. In the Ladies Barebow, Sue Threlfall finished 33 rd (out of 73). And finally, for archers who began their archery careers before 1993, the Seniors category saw Club Chair Francesca Hawker win the Ladies Senior Barebow event (out of 2 but with a score that would have placed her high up in joint 16 th out of 73 in the main event) and Paul Hawker placed 10 th out of 29 in the Gents Senior Compound section. Cleve Juniors keep winning at new inter-club event Following on from their success at home in January, members of the Junior club travelled to Cheltenham on 11 th February for the latest leg of the new M4-corridor inter-club competition. This latest leg was hosted by Deer Park Archers and, again, Cleve came out the overall winners! Team Cleve this time was composed of Josh Smith, Marco Costanza, Toby Close, Anna Perkins, Aimee Brake, Ella Shield, Maja Kliczka, Jessica Dale, Tallulah Kelly, and Sophia Boulton. The final leg of this competition takes place on 18 th March and is being hosted by Wallingford Castle Archers near Oxford. The ever-winning Team Cleve!

Club Committee Vacancies Your club committee STILL needs you! There are currently vacancies for a Health & Safety Officer and a Social Secretary. If anyone would like to fill these positions, the committee would love to hear from you. And some advance notice: From the AGM (November), the club will need a new Secretary as the current Secretary, Anne Norbury, has taken on the additional responsibility of being Membership Secretary so will be relinquishing her current role. Please give the post of Secretary some thought as the Club cannot function without a Secretary. Reminder - Easter closure of Chipping Sodbury and transition to Outdoors Due to the timing of Easter this year, Chipping Sodbury Sports Hall will be closed at the end of March. This means there is no Indoor archery on Friday 30 th March (Senior night and Junior training) nor on Saturday 31 st March (Junior Club and Mixed Senior/Juniors). In addition to the timing of Easter, some extra events for the Juniors organised by Junior Coaching Organiser Bob Nicholls, mean that the transition from Indoors in March to Outdoors in April will be a little different this year. So, below is a little timetable of how things are hoped to pan out from March onwards at the moment. Second CLUB EVENING First official OUTDOORS Junior Club at Up Yonder, 9.30am to 12noon. Third CLUB EVENING No Junior Club as this is the weekend of the club s Spring Tournament. Thereafter, things should settle down

As we are nearing the beginning of the Outdoor season, a reminder of important things to remember when at Up Yonder can be found at the end of this newsletter. This will be familiar to more established members, but new members should take some time to read through it. Junior Indoor Leagues The latest set of results for the Perris Indoor League (from January) show Cleve s Recurve A Team still tied in first place with Deer Park in Division 5 but marginally ahead having scored 21 more points so far (3292 vs 3271). The Recurve B Team is now in joint 1 st place in Division 6 but well ahead on total points scored. Our Compound Team remains in 4 th place in the single Compound Division. Full results including individual performances at: ( In the regional (GWAS) postal league, the scores after the combined month of December/January show that our U12, U14 and U16 teams are all still placed 1 st and we are safe in the knowledge that the U12 Team cannot now lose! This is only the 4 th ever Gold badge won by a Cleve Junior. Also this month, Cody Howells won himself the White Progress badge with his very first scoring round! Well done Cody, and Welcome to the club! As we ve also had a number of new members join the club over the winter, I ll add-in some useful (I hope) tips. The Ground Layout: Dotted around on the noticeboards should be posters showing the layout of targets. If you haven t seen these, then make this the first thing you go looking for. Rules on range safety require that archers wishing to shoot at distance must do so using targets towards the middle of the range. Targets at closer distances should be to the left and right of the middle. In effect, the arrangement of targets is to be an inverted V shape. And on the right-hand side of the field, the first two targets should not be put out further than 50m

this is just before the end of the covered barn to ensure that if an arrow were to either miss the target or deflect off the target, those working or tending to horses in the area at the end of the barn will not be at risk from stray arrows. The Signing-in book: A signing-in book is on a table under the shooting shelter (usually by the door to the kitchen area). ALL members (except Juniors on Saturday mornings) shooting at Up Yonder are required to signin the book EVERY time they visit the field AND sign-out prior to leaving. Parents are requested to sign the book as well please because knowing how many people use the field is very useful for grant applications the club makes to funding bodies. Lost and found arrows: Along with the signing-in book is a book for recording any arrows you lose and any that you happen to find. If you lose an arrow and cannot find it straight away, you MUST fill-in the book before you leave the ground. Please record your name, description of the lost arrow and which target was being shot at when it was lost. Likewise, if you find someone else s lost arrow, put a note in the book and put the arrow in the Lost Arrow tube by the door to the kitchen area. Photograph register and Guest Book: And also on the table is a book for signing if you are taking photographs or videos and a book for anyone who is shooting as a Guest. You need to sign the photo book on EVERY occasion when you are taking photos or making video recordings. And ALL visitors are required to sign in and out. The cost for visitor shooting is 5 per visit payment method by arrangement. Helpful hints for new members: Targets/Bosses: Over the winter months these are to be stored under (or as near to as possible) the shooting shelter when not in use as they have a habit of being blown over in strong winds. The targets are on wheels to help you move them around. The targets also have covers over them to protect them from the elements. Once you have finished shooting, please replace the cover unless someone else has indicated that they wish to use the target. Please see also the notice above about the need to arrange the targets in an inverted V shape for range safety. Target Faces: If you need to replace a target face as the one on the boss you intend to use has been shot to pieces, PLEASE take the old one home with you and recycle it with your paper recycling. PLEASE DO NOT leave old, shot-out, target faces lying around at Up Yonder nor stick them in the bins with the usable faces. Distance markings: The shooting line is the first row of white bricks in front of the shelter and across the field. White bricks in the ground and black-on-white markers on the fence denote distances in yards. Yellow/orange bricks on the ground and black-on-yellow markers on the fence denote distances in metres. Tape measures are available in the kitchen area for measuring ad-hoc distances. Shooting shelter: If the weather is inclement you may shoot from under the shelter. Also be aware when you arrive that others may be doing this too. If shooting to a certain distance you will need to use a tape measure to find the right distance for your target. Toilets: We are able to use toilets to the right hand side of the shelter (with the shelter behind you), in a building in the car park used by the livery stables. The door to the toilets is a heavy metal door. There is a wooden gate from our field into the livery car park. Car Park: Please use the car park behind the shooting shelter. Do not use the car park by the livery stables (i.e. where the toilets are). Access to the kitchen area: This is gained via a key available for a 5 deposit from Membership Secretary Anne Norbury (anne.norbury@blueyonder.co.uk). The kitchen has cold running water, a kettle, a microwave plus a selection of cutlery. PLEASE clear up after yourselves and TAKE YOUR RUBBISH/LITTER HOME as there is no waste collection. When can I shoot? Anytime daylight hours other than 9.30am to 12noon on a Saturday (as that s Junior Club). Gates: At the end of the drive into Up Yonder, you will encounter a large wooden gate. The owners of Up Yonder unlock this ca. 7am. When arriving and leaving, please close this gate behind you. Whistles: You will have learnt on your beginners course about range safety and the use of whistle commands to control shooting. Other than organised shoots during the year (e.g. there is a Recurve League

and a Longbow League organised on various days throughout the year), it is unlikely that the field will be under whistle control. It is important, therefore, to be aware of all archers around you and wait until everyone has finished shooting before collecting arrows. Shooting etiquette: As there is often no fixed time for shooting, club members will come and go at any time. When you have put your equipment together, done your warms up and are ready to shoot but you see that others are already shooting, please wait for the next end before shooting i.e. so that nobody finishes shooting only to see that you have just started and still have 5 arrows to go. Horses: If there are any horses in the field adjacent to our range, then they are in quarantine. Please do not, therefore, stroke/touch them or give them any food. Anything else: If I get reminded of other useful tips, I ll add them to the next newsletter.
