1 CELEBRATING 15 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Triad Chapter - American Singles Golf Association August 2008 Laura Kennedy Scores a Holein-One! Laura Kennedy had her first hole-in-one on Wednesday June 18th around 6:00 PM. She was playing hole #12 at Maple Leaf Golf Course. She made the shot using a 9 wood and a Titleist Pro V1 ball. Playing in her group were David Moose, former ASGA member Don Hartman, and Tom Gardner. Laura has been playing golf for 32 years, so this was a great thrill. She says she Looked down to pick up my tee and never saw it drop in the hole! But, everyone else did. Laura ended the round with her best score in two years, a 75, which was also her best score at Maple Leaf. July Meeting Recap Sixteen members and three guests attended the July 14 chapter meeting. President Robin Pinnix opened the meeting by recognizing the guests. Two of our guests were prospective members Landon Wood from Clemmons and Kirby Wolfe from Greensboro. We must have made a good impression because Landon has since joined the chapter. Our special guest for the meeting was Greg Dorn, son of chapter member Frank Dorn. As many are aware, Greg is just recently back from serving in Iraq where he was injured and members of his squad were killed by an IED. Thankfully Greg is doing well. He wanted to take the opportunity to thank the members of our chapter for the many s and prayers he received while serving and recovering from his injuries. He answered several questions about Iraq and gave us his first-hand perspective on the situation there. Robin told everyone about the good showing Triad members had at the Hickory chapter s Rock Barn outing the previous weekend. Laura Kennedy was recognized for her recent hole-in-one. Also, we learned that chapter member David Moose and former member Don Hartman came in second in Maple Leaf Golf Course s Association tournament. David shot a 72 and Don a 71. Laura and David said that Don was having heart problems and may have to have surgery. But, he s still playing golf as well as ever. Con Peltier invited members to her home to watch the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Olympics on August 8. Everyone wished Helen Godwin (July 7) and David Moose (July 6) Happy Birthday! Oak Valley Results Sixteen players attended the June 28 th outing at Oak Valley Golf Club. With a 1:30 tee time, we were looking at a typical summer day hot with a chance of thunderstorms. Our host for the outing, Ralph Pitts, planned an event with several ways to win. There was team event using the bets two net score on each hole, men s and women s low net prizes, and a closest to the pin prize on hole #6. As the groups were playing the last few holes, thunderstorms were breaking out all around us. We could see lightning and there was heavy wind, but no rain. All but one group managed to finish all 18 holes despite the stormy weather. The last group came in after finishing #16 because of the vivid lightning that seemed to be getting closer by the minute. As groups finished up, most players headed over to La Bambini s Italian Restaurant in Clemmons where we had dinner after the round and where the prize winners were announced. Lee Lyons joined us for dinner. In the team competition, two teams tied with a two best ball net score of 120. Based on a scorecard playoff, first place ended up going to the team of Barbara Shoemaker, Tom Loughlin, Eddie Sparks, and Louis Marusik. Members of the second place team were Ralph Pitts, Attend a Multi-Chapter Event. Meet more singles. Play more golf. 2 Triad Chapter of the American Singles Golf Association President Robin Pinnix Chairman of the Board Carole Olson Golf Chairperson Jim Runyan Social Chairperson Helen Godwin Membership Chairperson Penny Gettings Communications Chairperson Curtis Jones Secretary none Treasurer Kevin Chrestman MEMBERSHIP DUES Dues for the Triad Chapter of the American Singles Golf Association are as follows: $70.00 National Dues Payment can be made by check or major credit card. Mail with application to: ASGA National Headquarters, P. O. Box 848, Pineville, NC TM Steve Motsinger, Carol Brooks, and Constance Peltier. Carol Brooks took the women s low net prize with a score of 68 and Tom Loughlin took the men s low net prize with a score of 66. Carol Brooks also took the closest to the pin prize. Celebrating the 4 th at Olde Beau Nearly a dozen Triad members attended the 4 th of July outing at Olde Beau. On Friday, the format was a shambles team event plus individual putts. Though the round was interrupted by a good rain, everyone eventually completed the round. In the shambles event, second place went to the team of Carroll Jennings, Steve Motsinger, Eddie Bulldog Sparks, and Rita Davis. You know Eddie must feel right at home at Olde Beau given its mascot. First place went to Emily Williams, Kady Carruthers, and Frank Dorn. In the putts contest, Frank won the men s prize and Emily won the women s. One player, who shall remain nameless what s happens at Olde Beau stays at Olde Beau learned that you should never wear white pants if you might get soaked by the rain. Luckily, Frank Dorn, always a gentleman, came to the rescue with the loan of his rain suit pants. After golf, dinner was at Nikolas s Restaurant. After dinner, a few of the members had rented a condo overlooking the 18 th hole for the weekend. So, folks gathered there on the patio to enjoy the fireworks show Olde Beau staged that evening. Then, those players staying at the Alleghany Inn got to enjoy a second fireworks show later that night that the town put on across the street from the Inn. Saturday was an overcast day with a good chance for more rain. But, at least the overcast skies kept the temperatures down. For the second day s event, there was some shuffling of players. Rita Davis got up than morning to find that her car would not start. So, given that it was a Saturday on a holiday weekend, she ended up skipping golf to ensure she got her vehicle fixed. Curtis Jones made the drive up from Winston that morning to fill one of the openings. The game for the day was a simple team event we took the best net score on each hole. There was also a closest to the pin prize on hole #14 with the added catch that you had to make at least par to win the prize. The rain hit us as the foursomes were playing the first few holes on the back side. It lasted for just a few holes. With the rain came foggy conditions that made the #14 closest to the pin hole even more challenging as you could barely see the green from the tee due to the fog. But, the rain quit and the weather clear up, allowing us to finish the round. After the round, we gathered on the clubhouse porch for the awarding of the prizes and to rehash the day s events. There we learned of Steve Motsinger s and Kevin Chrestman s golf cart adventure. According to Kevin, as they were coming down one of the steep, wet slopes, their cart started sliding sideways down the hill. At that point, Steve, who was driving, decided to abandon ship and jumped out of the cart, leaving Kevin to ride the skid out from the passenger s seat. Fortunately for Kevin, the cart finally stopped skidding and didn t roll over or drop off the side the mountain. In the team competition, first place went to Eddie Sparks, Kady Carruthers, Curtis Jones, and Jennifer Gwynn with a best ball net score of 57. Kady helped lead the team to victory by birdieing 2 of the first 3 holes on the way shooting a 39 on the front side. The other two teams tied with a net best ball score of 63. It took nine holes in a scorecard playoff before it was determined that second place went to the team of Carroll Jennings, Kevin Chrestman, and Steve Motsinger. That meant the team of Do you want to update your personal information on our chapter s roster? You can now do this yourself. Simply click on the MY ACCOUNT link at the national website (SinglesGolf.com). 3 Louis Marusik, Frank Dorn, and Emily Williams wound up in third. The closest to the pin prize went to Curtis Jones who just met the must make par condition after blowing his birdie putt 5 feet passed and just barely dropping the par putt. And, everyone congratulated Carroll Jennings for a great round of 82. Triad Does Well at Hickory s Rock Barn Outing Forty-seven members of the American Singles Golf Association (ASGA) competed in tournament play on Saturday, July 12, at Rock Barn Golf & Spa s Championship Robert Trent Jones, Jr., Course. Hosted by the Hickory Chapter of ASGA, the joint-chapter outing attracted golfers from the Charlotte, Triad, Asheville, Up- State SC, Wilmington, Raleigh, Tampa Bay, and Jacksonville Chapters of ASGA. Nine players were from our Triad chapter. Our members represented us well and won several of the prizes. Carroll Jennings won Women s Low Gross with an 87 and a closest-to-the-pin prize. Louis Marusik won the Men s Low Gross prize with an 84. Ken Mabe won the Men s Low Net prize with a net 72 and a closest-tothe-pin prize. Our members took several prizes last year too. Let s hope Hickory keep inviting us to the outing despite that. Also attending from our chapter were Robin Pinnix, Steve Motsinger, Frank Dorn, Rita Davis, Jennifer Gwynn, and Tom Loughlin. Everyone who played had a great time. A Champion in Our Midst Our own Helen Godwin won the High Point Country Club's 2008 President's Cup on July 17th. Fourteen golfers played in this two day net score event with the first day played at Willow Creek CC and the second at Emerywood CC. Helen's net scores were 67 at Willow Creek and 69 at Emerywood for a 2 stroke win over the second place player. Norma Hall placed 5th in the event with net scores of 76 at Willow Creek and 68 at Emerywood. It is great to have the Triad ASGA so well represented in events like this. Helen won a nice trophy for the mantel and $50 credit in the club's pro shop. In addition, you can be sure that Jim treated Helen to dinner to celebrate the victory. CONGRATULATIONS HELEN!!!!! 5 CELEBRATING 15YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION AUGUST 2008 We ve been around as an organization for about sixteen years now. Many people have come and gone. Over 25,000 have joined in one of our 70 chapters nationwide over the years. Many members are now hitting their 10th year of membership, and even some beyond that. Single-hood doesn t seem to be that bad of a deal and fits many of our members to the tee. And during these years, we ve been able to draw some conclusions. First, getting new members is a good thing. Second, losing members is a good thing. Yes, when members hook-up with other members, we judge ourselves as being successful, because the organization made a relationship happen, even though it s congratulations and farewell time for them. Our success in this regards provides additional validation, especially to newcomers. It says that we offer a great option to improve one s life: meet members of the opposite sex, enjoy more friends of both sexes, and play more golf. Okay, we re validated. Now what? To keep this organization, and especially your local chapter on the right (and fast) track, it s important to constantly promote getting new members. New members today are your Board members next year and year s beyond. New members could be the reason you go to your next meeting. Will he or she be there? New members bring in their circle of friends. If you attend a meeting and no mention of bringing-in new members is made, then it s time for a talk with your Membership Committee, or your chapter president! Every chapter should have an on-going program for members to bring in guests to meetings, socials and golf outings. One chapter offers a free beer or wine to members if they bring a guest to a meeting (the drink is paid out of the chapter treasury). Another offers the guest three mulligans at their first golf outing. But whatever the incentive, if your chapter is not growing, it is, as they say, dying. ASGA National provides a number of things to help your chapter get guests to join your chapter: Display stands (see website for details / SinglesGolf.com) Press releases (we can help you write one of you can go to our website for some sample press releases) PSA s for local radio stations and signage for driving ranges Local members can post chapter information on a regular basis on Craigslist and there are many other websites where simple posts will bring new members to your meeting. So make something happen. Your efforts will make a difference. Upcoming Multi-Chapter Events Details and registration forms of all events are at Sea Palms Weekend / St. Simon's Island - August 15-17, Hosted by the Jacksonville chapter. Note: this is a weekday (Mon-Wed) event! Carson City, Nevada - Annual Weekend Event - Sept , 2008, hosted by the Sacramento, CA chapter. Contact Dwight Pattison at golf@sactosinglesgolf.com Mountain Fall Weekend at Lake Lure, NC October 17-19, Hosted by the Asheville chapter. Details can be found at or contact Hank Parish (hyparish@msn.com) for more information. Fall Fling at Mission Inn (Florida) - October 24-26, Hosted by the Tampa Bay chapter. New Year s Event (Florida likely) December 29-January 1, Hosted by ASGA National Office. Details TBA in August. Bear Info: You Need to Read This! We ve been thinking about starting a chapter in Wyoming. While exploring the possibilities, we read a brochure from the Wyoming State Department of Fish and Wildlife advising golfers to take extra precautions and be on the alert for bears while playing on Big Horn, Grand Teton, and Shoshone National Forests Golf Courses. They advise golfers to wear noise-producing devices such as little bells on their clothing to alert, but not to startle the bears unexpectedly. They also advise you to carry pepper spray in the case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch for signs of bear activity. Golfers should be able to recognize the difference between Black Bear and Grizzly Bear droppings on the golf course. Black Bear droppings are smaller and contain berries and possibly squirrel fur. Grizzly Bear droppings have bells, golf-gloves and sunglasses in them, and smell like pepper spray. Just thought we d point this out in case we ever have a multichapter event there! - Tom Alsop President / Founder American Singles Golf Association
