We hope your experience and participation with the Annual Meeting & Election was both informative and well received. Recreation As we quickly approach fall weather, we have closed the Recreation Pool as well as the Beach effective Tuesday, September 6, following the Labor Day weekend. Facilities that remain open are the Club Pool (as weather permits); recreation game room and event/ meeting room; library; playground; putt-putt golf; walking trails and lakes. While each and every committee within Fairfield Plantation is vital to the continued growth and success of the community, the Recreation Committee is perpetually soliciting volunteers for events and activities throughout the year. Those volunteers are needed outside the routine monthly committee meetings. Please, volunteer your time once or tens of times throughout the year your support is needed and much appreciated. For more information on how you can support our Recreation Department, please contact our Recreation Coordinator, Keith James. kjames@fairfieldplantation.com Golf Operations & Greens The cart path improvement project is complete in respect to the paths themselves. Various cost conscious efforts were retained in-house rather than through the contracted labor for the cart paths alone. Through the support of both Golf & Road Maintenance there were tasks such as, but not limited to, hauling off debris; filling in and placing sod along paths; and general clean-up. The overall project was a success. Coincidentally and in conjunction with the new paths, our Golf Operations Manager was able to renegotiate our Golf Car contract with Club Car. Fairfield Plantation is proud to introduce fifty (50) new, beautifully designed cars which replaced the fleet of golf cars with an exhausted warranty period. This was done at no additional cost to the Golf Operations budget and has been very well received by the membership and our guests. On a final budgeted note, Golf Maintenance was in dire need of a new roofing system on the workshop as well as windows throughout the facility. This budgeted line item was completed in a timely manner and has provided for a better work environment for our Golf Maintenance personnel. Our Greens Superintendent, Jay Walton managed to negotiate terms of the contract to fit budget constraints. Job well done! Food & Beverage After so many requests to BRING BINGO BACK our Restaurant & Events Manager, Beverly Clements has done exactly that! After reviewing various ideas with our General Counsel we are happy to reintroduce this fun activity back to the Club while adhering to both state and federal regulations. Join friends and neighbors at the Country Club every Monday at 11AM for a great lunch and refreshing drinks with lots of fun and prizes. Remember, plan your next event or luncheon through the Country Club. Beverly specializes in a wide array of party events and catering. There are various facilities within Fairfield Plantation to host your event depending on your need. If your event is outside the community, Fairfield Plantation can provide catering to most local area locations. The cost of the trip is $55. Please make checks payable to Plantation Planters Garden Club. Linda Colon and Sandy Kopp will be taking up trip money at our October meeting. This trip is open to all so come and join us for a great way to get into the holiday spirit! Marilyn Coulon, Publicity Think Spring I know that Fall has officially arrived and we are still dealing with last Summer s drought conditions but if you want those gorgeous spring bulbs like tulips, daffodils, crocuses, alliums, hyacinths, jonquils or gladiolus now is the time to plant them. They like soil that is loose and well-drained so it is easier to plant them in a bed. I do love to see them in a natural setting but that takes a little more work. If you are planting in a bed, dig and loosen the entire bed to the proper depth. The general rule of thumb for spring bulbs is to plant them two to three times as deep as the bulbs are tall. That means for large bulbs such as tulips or daffodils plant them about 8 inches deep and for smaller bulbs 3 to 4 inches deep. Tulips, daffodils and hyacinths should be planted with the nose of the bulb up and the root plate down. Planting depth is measured from the bottom of the bulb. Press the bulbs into the soil and cover with soil. This method of planting is preferred over planting bulbs one by one with a bulb planter. In many soils, like Georgia clay, bulb planters do not work well, if at all. Plant your bulbs in a location that gets lots of sun from January through early May and you should get beautiful blooms starting with jonquils and crocuses in February, hyacinths and daffodils in March/early April followed by tulips in mid-april and finally gladiolus in mid to late April. Be sure to check the package for bloom times, they can change depending on the variety of the bulb. A major mistake that home owners make is cutting the entire plant back after it blooms. Do not do this! Prune off the spent blooms but keep the leaves. You can fold the leaves down and secure with rubber bands if you want to minimize their appearance but do not cut them off. Leaving the foliage on the plant will allow the nitrogen in the leaves to be absorbed by the bulb and this allows for healthy blooms in future years. If you are looking for locally grown or native plants, be sure to stop by the Marketplace. The Marketplace is going to be held in conjunction with the Georgia Master Gardeners State Convention on the afternoon of Friday, September 30, and all day October 1. There will be a number of local vendors selling everything from garden art to plants to super soil. It will be located outside of the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center. Happy Gardening! Nancy Dombrowsky Plantation Travel Club The Plantation Travel Club will meet on TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11, NOT October 4, at 6:30 pm at the Country Club.
