5 4 th of July Special Events Sunday, July 1 - Thursday, July 5 The following activities are in addition to our regularly scheduled weekly events, which can be found starting on page 8. SUNDAY, JULY 1 Family Talent Showdown* 5:30pm - 7pm, Night Heron Park Bring your family and show off what makes you unique! Check in beginning at 5:15pm for our Talent show. Prizes for Best Child Talent (under 8), Best Youth Talent (8-14), Best Teen/ Adult (15+), Best Family, and Most Unique Talent. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs to take in the show, admission and participation is complimentary. Microphone, ipod hookup, and bluetooth speaker available for use. Sunday Sundaes with Rick Hubbard* 7pm - 8:30pm, Night Heron Park Our fan favorite Rick Hubbard and his famous kazoo band will present a special patriotic performance on the Night Heron Park Stage. Build your own ice cream sundaes for $5 each! Please bring your blankets and chairs for seating. TUESDAY - JULY 3 Cornhole Tournament in the Park* 2pm - 3:30pm, Night Heron Park Stage Show your cornhole skills with a little competition in the park! Teams can register starting at 1:45pm at the stage; tournament play begins at 2pm. The top 3 teams will be awarded. Admission is complimentary. Kamp Kiawah Kid s Night Out: Party in the USA! 6pm - 9pm, Night Heron Park, 3-11 yr olds Show off your American Pride! Enjoy water balloon launching, potato sack racing and other patriotic games and snacks! For more information about Kamp Kiawah, see page 43. Additional Kid s Night Out events for July 4th week are available on July 5 and July 6. Fireworks Twilight Paddle Mingo Point, 8pm - 10pm Relax, unwind, and see the sunset as you have never seen it before! After the sunset, enjoy a brilliant fireworks show over the marsh. Participants must be at least 16 and those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. This trip has a 24-hr cancellation policy. $55/ person; Resort Guests and KICA members $50. Reservations required Dive in Movie* 9pm, Night Heron Family Pool Float around the pool and watch Spiderman Homecoming. Admission is complimentary, concessions and glow gear are available for purchase. WEDNESDAY - JULY 4 A Day Celebrating America* Loggerhead Bar & Grill at The Sanctuary, All Day Loggerhead Grill will be hosting an all-day Fourth of July Party. Fun in the sun with numerous activities including hair braiding, clowns and live music. End the evening by viewing our spectacular fireworks show. Loggerhead Grill will feature a festive Fourth of July Buffet or enjoy grilled favorites for lunch off of our extensive poolside menu. 6 KiawahActivities.com Tye Dye and Party on the Pool Deck 1pm - 3pm, Night Heron Park Pavilion Join us for a Patriotic Party and some Tye Dye! Make your very own unique Tye-Dye design with a Patriotic flair and then dance to some of the summer s hottest tunes with our Recreation Staff on the pool deck! Join in on a hula hoop contest and MORE! Admission is complimentary, Tye- Dye shirts are $18 plus tax each. Pool use is for Kiawah Island Golf Resort guests only. Sand Sculpting Contest* 1:30pm - 3pm, Just West of the Sanctuary Hotel Create a Sandtastic Sand Sculpture at this annual event! Themes will be Most Patriotic and Most Creative. Judging will begin promptly at 3pm. Complimentary. The Annual Patriotic Bike Parade!* Bike decorating begins at 5pm Parade starts promptly at 5:45pm, Sea Forest Drive at East Beach Village Patriots of all ages are encouraged to join in the parade on bikes, skates, roller blades, or by foot. Parade decorations will be available at 5pm on Sea Forest Drive near the East Beach Village. The Kiawah Island Fire Department will lead the parade, followed by Uncle Sam and the Lady Liberty. The route leads participants down Sea Forest Drive, from the East Beach Village, and finishes at Night Heron Park, where everyone is invited to join us for our Independence Festival. Complimentary. Bike Parade Road Closures: On July 4, Sea Forest Drive will be closed to thru traffic at the Sea Forest Drive/East Beach Village intersection from 5:30pm until 6:30pm. In addition, residents and guests in Mariners Watch and Windswept villas will experience temporary road delays between 5:45pm - 6:15pm. Fireworks held on the beach promptly at 10pm Bring your family and friends to celebrate America s Independence on the scenic oceanfront Terrace Lawn at The Sanctuary. Indulge in fantastic food and classic cold festive drinks while enjoying our All American Band. Children will be able to participate in our fun filled activities and games that will be provided leading up to the fireworks held on the beach promptly at 10pm. This festival will kick off following the Annual Bike Parade at Night Heron Park with many attractions for family and friends to enjoy! Festivities include: live music, face painting, jump castles, carnival games, and much more! Food and beverage tickets will be on sale at the park starting at 4pm and at the event. Food will be served until 9:15pm, featuring a cookout menu inspired by traditional holiday favorites. Food prices range from $5 - $15. Night Heron Grill will close for food service at 4pm, bar will be open until 10pm. Beaches & Cream Ice Cream Sundae Bar! The Sanctuary, Happy 4th of July! Friday & Wednesday, 7pm - 10pm, $12 Come celebrate with us as you build your ultimate ice cream sundae with all the festive toppings! Reservations required Swim Across America* Sunday, August 5 SAA is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is dedicated to raising money and awareness for cancer research, prevention and treatment by hosting open water and pool swim events across the US. SAA, whose events include Olympians, has raised over $75 million since its inception. Money raised by SAA supports cancer research and clinical trials at world-renowned research institutes. Kiawah s event will feature both ½-mile and 1.5 ocean swim options, a kids splash and lunch with an Olympian. This community oriented event is designed to attract swimmers from across the country of all ages and skill levels. Register online at Kiawah. Take a break from the pool and have the whole family learn to hula. Learn the basics of this traditional dance and have some fun testing your skills with our instructors. No reservations required. Fresh Flower Lei-Making Workshop Wednesday, June 13 4pm - 6pm, Night Heron Park Join our instructor and learn to make your own fresh flower lei. Pick from a beautiful assortment of fresh flowers and make a stunning lei that reflects your personality. $25/person. Wizard Academy Friday, 5:30pm - 6:30pm, Night Heron Park Stage Calling all potential wizards and witches, Kiawah s Wizard academy is open! Students will make their own wands, have a potions class, learn and practice some spells, and participate in wand dueling. They ll leave with their Wizarding certificate and may just have to defend the academy from a villain! Recommended for ages 6+, advanced reservations are required. $25/person. 26 Look for our Tagged Gators! The Town of Kiawah, in partnership with the Kiawah Island Community Association, is conducting an alligator study focusing on alligator behavior and movements. Captured alligators are fitted with visible, numbered tags so that they can be easily identified in the field by biologists and visitors. Two visual tags (blue for males, yellow for females) will be placed on each alligator, one behind the head and one on the tail. Campers will find new ways to have adventures on the island! They will learn to kayak and cast net, paddle board, go shelling, do archery and Archery Tag, play water games, get creative, and MORE! Ages 8-15, advanced reservations are required. 4 camper minimum. Campers will be transported on certain days to other locations on the island, an additional waiver for transportation is required. Drop off at 8:30am at the Night Heron Park Basketball courts Activities are weather dependent and may be switched out. Campers are encouraged to wear their swimsuits under their clothes. Campers must wear shoes with a heel strap or tennis shoes. Ages 8-15 Full Day: 8:30am-4pm, lunch included. Monday* What s SUP? Learn to paddleboard and explore the marsh, you ll learn the basics of paddle strokes, then we ll hit the river on our boards, play some disc golf, and try your hand at atlatl. Pool games and a craft will round out the day. Tuesday Beach Day! Work on some junior lifeguard skills and find out what it takes to be a beach guard then put those skills to the test as you spend the afternoon learning to paddle and surf. Wednesday* Start the day with our favorite game 9 Square in the Air! Have some pool time and then head to Mingo Point for kayaking and cast netting- maybe you ll see some dolphins! Thursday* Show your skills with target paintball, give our Ninja Warrior and slackline course a go, and finish the day with SUPer games on the Kiawah River. Friday* Meet your match with Archery Tag and then finish the day with a motorboat trip on the Kiawah River with one of our naturalists. However, if you take all 5 classes, you can become an official Kiawah Island Jr. Naturalist and receive a free Rite in the Rain notebook to be just like your favorite Naturalist! Each session will target a different area of wildlife and give each child a better appreciation of our native species. Requirements: Children must be 7-12 years old; parents must be present to sign kids in and out, before and after the trip. Join a naturalist for a behind-the-scenes look at the daily life of the Nature Center s resident animals. Assist the naturalists with preparing food for our animals and get hands-on care experience by helping to make sure their enclosures are clean and the animals are healthy. $25/ child The salt marsh behind the island is packed with wildlife rarely seen and waiting to be discovered. We will meet at the Mingo Point Outpost where we will board our motorboat and head out for some on-the-water exploration. Let our trained Recreation staff take the stress of planning your child s birthday party out of your hands. Each party last 2 hours and includes a decorated table, minutes of your chosen activity with an instructor, a dedicated party attendant, and a special surprise for the birthday boy or girl. Special additions, such as cake and themed decorations, are available to customize your party. Party base price is $250 unless noted otherwise. In many areas along the Kiawah River strand feeding can be seen from the water and land. This is a fascinating behavior, but dolphins must be given ample space. In the Kiawah River, we know this rare behavior is done only by a handful of individuals. Disrupting dolphins while feeding can result in stress, reduced success, or abandonment of this behavior altogether. Please responsibly observe dolphins from a distance, as they will be much more likely to continue their unique strand feeding behavior. Keep your distance from dolphins- it's the law! The Marine Mammal Protection Act recommends not approaching dolphins within 50 yards from a vessel (kayaks included) and 10 yards from land. Never touch, feed, or encourage animals to approach you or your vessel. When in a vessel dolphins can approach you; however, do not chase, follow, circle, or separate groups. Loggerhead Sea Turtle Nest Evaluations Sea turtle nesting and hatching is monitored on our beaches by a group of dedicated resident volunteers. The Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol is one of the largest turtle patrol volunteer programs in the U.S. and has been in existence since The Kiawah Hatching Patrol evaluates turtle nests three days after seeing signs of hatching. An evaluation includes determining: how many live turtles emerged from the nests, how many eggs did not hatch and/or how many hatchlings did not live to make it out of the nest, and our most exciting part, to assist with releasing struggling hatchlings into the ocean.
