If you are in a team you have made a commitment. You are part of a team, and that brings with it responsibilities on and off the field (court). Training is part of being involved in a team. Coaches put a lot of time and planning in. You are expected to attend and give your best. If there is a valid reason that you can t participate, please let your coaches know as soon as possible. You have made a commitment for the season. Always make sure you display the attitude of Fairplay. Fair competition, respect, friendship, team spirit, equality, sport without doping, respect for written and unwritten rules such as integrity, solidarity, tolerance, care, excellence and joy, are the building blocks of fair play that can be experienced and learnt both on and off the field. (International Fairplay Committee). These ideas align perfectly with our own College Values Passion for learning and perseverance when faced with difficulties Respect of each other, ourselves and our environment Integrity - we will act with integrity at all times Diversity and toleration of others Excellence in all we do with lots of energy and enthusiam We expect our spectators and supporters to respect that these are the values we hold and that their behavior and attitude reflects and enforces this at our fixtures. Thank you and well done to our head students Jack Griffin and Sarah Bevege on their speeches at our ANZAC Day assembly, you complimented each other perfectly and represented the College with great mana. Also congratulations to Oliver Barnsdall on his golfing success over the holidays and Demante Murray on his outstanding achievement of being chosen for the Northern Māori u16 s Rugby team. 3 P A N U I 1 1 NEW ZEALAND INSTITUTE OF SPORT In the first week of holidays a group of us took up the opportunity to partake in a high performance course with New Zealand Institute of Sport (NZIS) held at Otorohanga College. During this course we took part in a variety of activities and assessments that allowed us to gain 20 Level 3 NCEA credits. Whilst doing this course we gained more knowledge of how to ref a ripper rugby game at a high level, as well as using proper techniques and skills of how to manage and coach a variety of sports teams. We also learnt how to prevent and assist injuries that may occur at sports events. This experience has helped us gain confidence in how to manage events in the sporting industry. We would highly recommend other interested students take part in a course like or similar to this. It's a great experience and a good way to learn new things as a majority of our assessments were held outside. This course also helped us break out of our shell and interact with people we ve never met before which we can now call our NZIS family. Also we would like to thank Mrs Rauputu and the NZIS Tutors Tessa, Taylor and H for giving us all this opportunity and the experience of what it is like have a career in this Industry. P A G E 3 Students involved: Puhiwaiora Ngawaka, Jessica Williamson, Shauney Puohotaua, Henare Williams, Alex Tiriteu and Cenedra Haumaha. GOLF Tēna koutou katoa Last week I played in the NZ Māori Golf champs in Taupo at the Centenial Course. On Monday and Tuesday I hit 80 and 76 which put me in the top 16 for the senior division. On Wednesday morning I played my last strokeplay round and hit 81. On Wednesday afternoon I played my first round of matchplay against a Waikato golfer on a zero handicap. After hitting a satisfying even par 72 we were both all square after 18 holes so we went to a sudden death. On the third hole of sudden death I lost making a bogey when my playing partner made a par. It was such an awesome game! I was now competing in the top 16 plate division and on Thursday I went on to win both of my matches to put me in the final on Friday. In the final I was playing against a golfer on a plus 3 handicap and after a close battle I managed to win the match on the 16th hole. Overall I played great golf throughout the week gaining a top 5 finish in the senior nett, winning the senior stableford and winning the top 1st 16 senior plate matchplay, finishing 9th in the matchplay. I would like to thank all my whanau for their support, my sponsors and also my coach Andrew Horan. Nō reira, tēnā koutou,tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa. Oliver with his Waitomo team mates - Michael, Tori and Oliver all won their matches. Oliver Barnsdall 2016 CAREERS EXPO The careers expo will be held at the Claudelands Showgrounds in Hamilton on Sunday 12 June and Monday 13 June. If we have keen interest from students and parents we will look at getting a bus to transport us all, so parents can come along as well. Please contact Marina Rauputu to express your interest or to find out more information.
4 Welcome to the start of our Home-Learning Journey Each week, we will be providing some ideas for families to continue learning with their children after school. There will be a variety of activities, covering different learning areas and styles. Students can post examples of their learning in the box situated in the student office. All work submitted will be entered into a draw for a prize at the following assembly, as well as a prize for one of the best. We hope you all have fun! Te whakatauki o te wiki: Ko te manu e kai i te matauranga nona te Ao! The bird who feeds from knowledge will inherit the world. 1. Discuss this week s whakatauki and write an explanation of it s meaning. And/or, design a poster that illustrates the meaning of this whakatauki. E.g. 2. While having dinner, take turns taking bites of different foods and describe them. Try doing it with your eyes closed. *PRIZE for best adjective. 3. Again, during dinner, or if more appropriate, while helping with dinner or after, draw a timeline for the different foods included. 4. While doing the dishes, appropriate a price to different items and pretend you are earning that much money per item you clean and put away. E.g. 1 cent a knife, 2c per fork, 50c per cup, $1 per plate, $2 per pot. How much money do you earn per night? What about in a week? 5. Walk around your house, sketching the different trees, shrubs, and/or any other plants or flowers and research their names. When submitting your examples of home-learning, include your name and Tutor. BOARD S NEWS AND VIEWS TRUSTEE ELECTIONS Attached to today s newsletter is further information about the trustee s election. These days, trustees are well supported by opportunities to grow and develop in their roles and responsibilities of being a trustee on a school board. School Trustees Association (STA) provide a range of professional development opportunities, both by attending group sessions with other boards, and also onsite training at individual schools, specific to the needs of the school. Piopio College trustees have always taken up these opportunities to strengthen our ability to govern. On Wednesday, May 11, at 7.00pm, the current board is providing the opportunity for staff and parents to meet in the staffroom to hear about, and question what it means to be a board trustee, and as a member of the board, what is expected of trustees and how this works. We look forward to meeting with you on May 11, at the information hui. Regards Jaqui Taituha PIOPIO COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTION Nominations are invited for the election of three (3) parent representatives to the board of trustees. A nomination form and a notice calling for nominations will be posted to all eligible voters. The voting roll is open for inspection at the school and can be viewed during normal school hours. There will also be a list of candidates names, as they come to hand, for inspection at the school.
