1 WOMEN S GOLF May 14, 2018 WAVES AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS MALIBU, California Pepperdine junior Hira Naveed will represent the women s golf team at the NCAA Championships this week in Oklahoma. She s coming off a tie for sixth place at the NCAA San Francisco Regional. Pepperdine has qualifi ed as a team for the NCAA Championships 12 times in the last 20 years but this is the fi rst time that the Waves have sent a single individual to the event. EVENT INFO The NCAA Championships will be held at the par-72, 6,328-yard Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Live scoring will be available at NCAA.com. All players and teams will compete in the fi rst three rounds between Friday and Sunday (May 18-20). The fi eld will be cut to the top 15 teams and nine individuals from non-advancing teams for the fi nal round of stroke play on Monday (May 21), which will decide the individual national champion. Match play will determine the team champion on Tuesday and Wednesday (May 22-23). On Friday, Naveed will tee off on #10 at 8:25 a.m. CT, and on Saturday, she ll tee off on #1 at 1:05 p.m. CT. She s paired with Gabby Curtis (Wisconsin) and Erin Harper (Indiana) for the fi rst two rounds. Groups will be re-paired for rounds three and four. FIELD A total of 132 student-athletes (24 teams and 12 individuals) are taking part in the NCAA Championships. RANKINGS The Waves are rated 49th nationally by both Golfstat and Golfweek/Sagarin... Hira Naveed is 74th by Golfstat and 84th by Golfweek/Sagarin. NAVEED Hira Naveed (Perth, Australia) is a three-time All-WCC fi rst team selection. She s playing her best golf of the season and heads into the NCAA Championships with three straight top-10 fi nishes (T-9th at the Silverado Showdown, T-2nd at the WCC Championships and T-6th at the NCAA San Francisco Regional). At TPC Harding Park last week, Naveed fi nished with a 5-under 211, a personal best for 54 holes at Pepperdine, as well as the Waves record for an NCAA Regional. Her second round 5-under 67 tied Pepperdine s single-round NCAA postseason record and put her into fi rst place heading into the the third and fi nal round. She had an even-par 72 in the fi nal round, which dropped her to a tie for sixth place but was still good enough to qualify her for nationals by two strokes. Naveed is making her second NCAA Championships appearance. She tied for 32nd place in 2017, best among the Waves. Naveed s season scoring average is strokes, on pace to be a personal best and to rank #17 on the Waves single-season records list. Her career average of ranks sixth. Naveed tied for eighth at the 2017 Canadian Women s Amateur Championship. She was the 2015 Western Australia Junior Girls Player of the Year before arriving at Pepperdine. HONORS Three Waves earned 2018 All-WCC fi rst team notice: Momoka Kobori, Hira Naveed and Tatiana Wijaya. Five Waves have earned All-WCC fi rst team honors in their careers, led by three-time selections Naveed (2016, 2017, 2018) and Wijaya (2015, 2017, 2018). Kobori (2018), Patricia Wong (2016) and Katherine Zhu (2017) have each made it once. Wijaya (2015) and Kobori (2017) are past WCC Freshmen of the Year. Wong earned WCC Player of the Month honors for November Zhu is a three-time WGCA All-American Scholar, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar and WCC All-Academic fi rst team honoree. WCC CHAMPIONSHIPS Pepperdine ended up on the wrong side of the closest WCC championship fi nish in history and the tournament s fi rst-ever playoff. Both BYU and Pepperdine fi nished play with identical scores of 900 at Carlton Oaks Golf Club, but the Cougars would go on to win their third consecutive WCC title by the score of on the playoff hole. Hira Naveed tied for second, Tatiana Wijaya took fourth and Momoka Kobori tied for fi fth. NCAA SAN FRANCISCO REGIONAL The Waves fi nished two spots better than their #13 seed, taking 11th overall last week at TPC Harding Park. The Waves 3-under was the best score of the second round and got them within two shots of sixth place, but they couldn t duplicate their efforts in the third and fi nal round and ended up seven shots back of sixth. GIBBS Under the direction of Laurie Gibbs, who is now in her 25th season as head coach, Pepperdine has earned a place as one of the nation s top golf programs. Gibbs has been
