G day All At our April meeting we will be having Grant Barker, from Samhuntvic. Grant has his own brand of hunting clothing and gear. He will set up a display of his products, and will be selling them at a discounted price on the night. Grant has kindly donated some of his goods for our nightly raffle. His Camo has got fluoro running through it, for safety. While you are thinking of buying hunting apparel, Rob Fickling from Moroko30, has agreed to sell his ATF King boots at a discounted rate if the branch buys in bulk. His next shipment will be coming in in May. Rob took three years to design and test these boots to suit Australian hunting conditions. Please if you are interested let me know, either by or call me. They usually retail for $ The Outdoor Shop has received some more DVDs from the ADRF. We have got Deer caping and Trophy care, Deer Field Dressing and Butchery, and Roaring in Reds by The Graf boys. As April is usually The Rut for Reds and Fallow, this DVD will be of use showing how to call the Red Stags in close. Make sure you go and see Nick and Frank at the shop. Melbourne member John Mahony was lucky enough to win last years raffle for a fallow Hunt with Pete Costin. He finally went up in March and took a quality animal. John will be bringing in the antlers and hopefully give us the run down on the hunt. As the Hog deer season is starting in April, I'm sure there will be some Hoggie antlers on display also. The Ada Hunters Dinner will be on again this year, on the 15th of June. Last year the branch had over 20 people attend. The dinner consists of totally game food. We usually make a weekend of it and stay overnight. The venue is The Black Tie restaurant in Warrigal. Anyone interested give Walter a ring or as he will be taking the bookings again. Bring along your partner for a good night. The Arthur Bentley trophy is presented on the night for the best Sambar for last year. ABN Next Branch meeting 11th April 2013 Grant Barker from Samhuntvic Rob Fickling from Moroko30 The branch will be having a combined Hound Hunt and Stalking weekend on the 18th and 19th of May. Dinner will be provided by the branch on Saturday night. Anyone interested please let Pete Bransperger or Craig Hill know, so we know how many to cater for. Our world renowned chef Frank Favrin will be once again prepared to cook up a storm of some form of game. Congratulations to John Mayall and Shaun Bell who came second and third respectively in the Hog Deer category in the ADA National Trophy Competition for The next branch hunt will be on the 19th of May. 2 The 2nd BGRC Australian Deer Association Friendly Shoot 16 February 2013 Neil Hibble The 2012 BGRC-ADA Friendly Shoot was a great success and a repeat performance was held again on 16 February. We has 23 competitors in attendance, of whom 13 shot for the BGRC and 10 for the ADA. Four events were held on the day: Hunting Rifle, Special Snap, Group 1 Nitro and Group 2 Stopper. The results for these events are below and on the following page. The overall result was closer than in Last year the ADA won one event based on average scores for the event. In 2013, the BGRC won the Hunting Rifle and Special Snap and the ADA Group 1 Nitro and Group 2 Stopper. Summing the average scores for the four events gave a higher aggregate to the BGRC, enabling retention of the perpetual shield. If the ADA continue to improve they might take it from us in BGRC Average Score ADA Hunting Rifle Special Snap Group 1 Nitro Group 2 Stopper Aggregate Total It was a great day and members of both clubs enjoyed the competition and interaction between the clubs. My thanks to Walter Albert, Vice President of ADA Melbourne Branch and Tom Zamanis (who happens to also be a BGRC member) for helping to organise the shoot and for arranging for venison sausages to be supplied for our BBQ lunch. Once cooked they did not last long making the local butchers' bangers pretty ordinary in comparison. 4 MY MEGA FELLOW DEER (Dama dama) Buck John Mahoney The Australian Deer Association (ADA) Melbourne branch had its first meeting for the year on February 9th, As part of a fund raising endeavour a major raffle was run on the night with three prizes on offer: 1st Prize; Fellow hunt to the value of $2,750 which included all food, accommodation and trophy fee if successful. Provided by MEGA-TRACK hunting and guiding service 2nd prize; a set of Cooper Tyers of choice to the value of $1,000 provided by Guests 4WD and Cooper Tyers 3rd prize; $500 of Stoney Creek clothing of your choice from Melbourne Firearms Given these three fantastic prizes from our major sponsor s I was happy to part with some of my hard earned, for a chance to go home with any of these prizes on offer. After the AGM was over, it was time to draw the raffle and low and behold the first name out of the hat, was mine. My mother always said I was a tin ass! With the first prize a Guided Fellow hunt to the value of $2,750, safely in my back pocket, who am I to argue. Nearly all of my deer hunting experience has been chasing Sambar and never with a guide, I was very excited about this Fellow hunt with a guide to boot. After a few congratulations from fellow ADA members it was apparent that I needed a NSW R-Licence, so it was off to see Tom Zamanis ( The Cornerstone of ADA Melbourne Branch,) amongst the many hats Tom wears, he also is the branches Accredited Assessor for NSW Game Councils R-Licence. Thanks Tom. With the formalities out of the way it was time to get hunting. Peter Costins from Mega Track hunting services located at Howlong, on the NSW/Vic border, just south of Albury/Wodonga, called to make arrangements for a date that suited us both. To my surprise it was quickly realised that Peter lived and worked for a few years in the small country town that I grew up in. Anyway back to the hunt. As the Fellow season opens on the 1st of March it was decided my hunt would be the first cab of the rank, on the 4 th March, when all the top Bucks are still out there. It was prearranged that once I arrived at Howlong a little after lunch, to call Peter and get direction to his home. While driving down his street and looking for his number I came across two 4WD with MEGA TRACK blazed across their sides and I thought! this has to be it. Peter met me out the front and after the usual shaking of the hands, Peter said gees you ve been in a good paddock! referring to my substantial weight gain since he last saw me 20 odd years ago. My retort was, yeh last time I seen you, you had hair! The pleasantries aside we went inside for a cupper and chewed the fat, about the good times we had in my old home town. THE HUNT Peter suggested at around four o clock we pack the bino s and water in the vehicle for our first trip. Firearms were not needed as this was to familiarize myself with the deer and the property Peter had access to for his guiding services, the hunt would wait until the following morning. Once through the gate of the property it was blindingly obvious how dry the county had become over the summer period, rain was surely needed. With binos at the ready it was up hill and down dale for the next few hours glassing and looking over the herd. Fellow deer preferred habitat is mixed woodlands and open grasslands, this property had it all. As the rut had not yet started the larger bucks were segregated from the main herd which mainly consisted of does, yearlings, fawns and spikers. Some of the bucks had their head down and were feeding; from behind you could clearly see the scale of antlers on display. I was in heaven and the next mornings hunt was just too far away. I could hardly wait. The quality of bucks seen on this property was truly amazing, hats off to Peter for a well-managed herd and his knowledge of these deer is first class. Over the years I have found glassing deer is one of the most enjoyable aspects of deer hunting, just watching deer undisturbed you can gain so much knowledge about their behavioural pattern and secrets, you can use this to your advantage during a hunting trip. By the time we got back to Peter house it was dark, while I watched a few hunting CD s from Pete s library, he prepared the nightly meal, venison pie, one of my favourites and there was no disappointments. 5 MY MEGA FELLOW DEER (Dama dama) Buck Continued The next day an early start was in order, alarm set for 5 o clock which gave us enough time for a quick bite, then set off for the property before first light. The difference this time being, firearm and ammunition were coming with us. Peter s plan was to try and make it back to the hill where the bucks were hanging out the evening before and hopefully cut them off as they were making their way back up the hill after feeding on the flats during the night. We made a bee line for where we had seen the bucks, coming in slowly and quietly as to not disturb them. As with most deer they are very rarely in the same place as the day before, today was no exception and a change of plan was in order. We decided to detour around the left hand face of the hill; everything was in our favour, the sun was out but no glare and a slight breeze in our face, as we crossed over the ridge we could see a nice looking gully in front of us, with a washed out creek which came from the flats below to half way up the gully. Peter suggested we sit for a bit as the deer might be using the washed out creek to travel from their feeding area, to get back to the hill top. No sooner had the words come out of Pete s mouth and a fellow buck miraculously appeared before our eyes. Whispering, Peter asked what my thoughts were on the buck and if you like what you re seeing take the shot before he s on to us, after seeing the well-formed palms, my reply was that s good enough for me. Just after Peter had covered his ears the 225 grain projectile from my 338 ultra-mag hit the spot, the buck did the shimmy-shimmy shake! Then fell to the ground and it was goodnight Irene. As the projectile passed through the animal and out the other side it managed to put a nice 50 cent size hole straight through the middle of its heart, after a few superlatives the congratulations were all round. If anyone out there is considering going on a guided hunt, all I can say is go for it. Hunting with a guide is well worth it, believe me, it takes all the hard work out of it and let s face it you need to spoil yourself some times. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Peter Costins from Mega Track Hunting and Guiding Services, for his professionalism, hospitality and the opportunity he has given me, all because of his support for ADA Melbourne Branch. 6 State Report Walter Albert The State Executive met in person for the first time since the election of new office bearers on 24th of March. The new office bearers are Colin Brumley as State President, Charles McHugh as State Secretary and myself as State Treasurer. Melbourne branch was well represented at this meeting, but unfortunately some branches failed to send their delegates. The Public Relations Committee is planning to have a stand this year at the Shot Show expo, and next year at the Wild Deer expo. In an Australian first, we will be setting up the Marksman Training System simulator at these expos. The National ADA has recently purchased it and it is the only Hunting Simulator of its type in Australasia. The PR Committee have also for the first time been given a budget to spend money to advertise online through hunting websites. ADA's membership has not been increasing in line with the number of new deer hunters getting their game license. The Hunter Education Committee, led by Barry Howlett, is planning their next course at Forest Edge on July Tim Ebert has agreed to help on this committee and they are looking for members who can help with presentations on the day, so please contact Barry or Tim if you can help. Please encourage any new member or prospective new deer hunter to sign up for this course as it is the best way to quickly learn about deer hunting from the experts. Melbourne branch is entitled to three delegates to State Executive. As Charles and myself are now office bearers on SE, we are now able to have 2 more delegates. Our new delegate Tim Ebert has taken on several projects and it would be good if we could get two more members to come on board and help with running the SE. Please consider. The position of Project Officer has been put on hold, as we are going ahead with the use of a virtual office service. This service will operate 24/7 and divert calls to the appropriate persons or to our website. They will also report to us the type of calls we are getting, so we can better respond to them. Mick Schmidt will answer the calls untill the new system is up and running. The National Parks Regulatory Impact Statement will shortly be closing for comments. If any member has issues with it or would like to put forward suggestions, please contact Steve Garlick or Col Brumley. The 2013 Victorian Hunters Dinner is coming up on 15th June at the Black Tie Restaurant in Warragul. Melbourne branch will again attend, as it is an excellent night with great game food. If you would like to come please book through me and book early as there are limited seats and it fills up quickly. Cost is $50.00 per person. Partners are most welcome and there is accommodation nearby. Please contact me for tickets, on during work hours and I must receive payment in full to hold a ticket. As most members would know by now, we did not achieve the trial Balloted hunting on Snake Island. The Government's reasoning for rejecting the proposal was flawed, so we are setting up a plan to tackle the issues that the Government came up with. This is being led by Barry Howlett, and any member who would like to help, please get in contact with him. There are many members of the ADA in the Western suburbs and Geelong. They do not attend branch meetings as it is too far to drive. State Executive believes the time is right to form a sub branch around the Werribee area and it should be part of Melbourne branch. 7 PBGM Update March Tom Zamanis Progress in our PBGM programs has been quite slow with the warm weather of summer and re-establishment works that HVP are undertaking to replace the lost trees of We have however been conducting some outings on an adhoc basis when the weather allows, but have not been met with much success over this period. This has led to declining participation, and to arrest this decline we have requested assistance from the Westernport Branch to bolster our numbers with their members that are accredited. There have been a number of challenges to finding success in the current circumstances but we have put together a proposal to HVP to use methods popular overseas to increase our effectiveness. We hope that the proposals are met with approval and we can get started very soon. Two new members joined our PBGM team, Ray Milione and Don Heater successfully gained competency in our accreditation program. Shaun Bell was also successful in re-qualifying. Weather conditions on the range were favourable, with little to no wind. A big thank-you to the BGRC team hosting the event and to ensure it all went smoothly. A BBQ with venison sausages supplied by Melbourne Branch and cooked by the BGRC had all fed in a timely manner. An induction day has been set aside in the near future to familiarize the new members and those from WP Branch that want to assist. Sambars Roar 7

8 Hound Report Craig Hill The good news is Danny and I both pass the pilot assessor s training course. The bad new is DPI has to fix some items in the reg s. Five of us sat the course two ADA, two VHH and one VDA. There would have been at least 150 years plus of hound knowledge sitting listening to every word spoken by one lady. What we though we knew before we started, we were shown to be only the tip of the iceberg compared to what Glenys knows and was able to teach us in a very short space of time. All five people there walked in with reservations in our expectations of the course. After all we are not breeding show ring dogs, but working dogs and we are the experts on hunting hounds. The 300 plus papers of pre course reading we had may have had something to do with the reservations as well. By the looks of it we ll be able to build a dog from scratch this lot I will have letters after my name when this is finished. Were just some of the comments before the start of the course. The morning started with a briefing, the course in it aims objectives and measurable results. Simon Toop from DPI was present and spoke on the department choice of Glenys Alexandra and the requirements of department in the understanding of the assessment process. Glenys started the course by explaining the brief she had been given by the department and her background which qualified her to prepare and present a course of this nature. Glenys is a top all breed judge for the ANKC and travels the world judging dogs, she also teaches and has prepared the teaching courses for ANKC judges. She has spent her life with dogs and dog people. She knows and understands them. Most important of all she is able to share her knowledge. This is a quality that is short supply now days. The aim of the course was to provide assessor with the additional expertise required in order for organisations to comply with the new Regulations and be approved to register hounds on behalf of the Secretary. 9 Hound Report Continued Ensuring dogs are compliant with the Regulations is critical to protect hunters from prosecution Maintain the integrity of the permitted breeds by ensuring that only true to type which are sound for purpose, are pasted at assessment. The course also provides a process which will protect both the organisations and Game Victoria in any future auditing that may occur. There are some very import key words in the above stated aims. Firstly additional expertise. The department and ANKC both recognize the level of knowledge already held by the assessors from all organisations. However with the addition of the extra breed we need to enhance the years of practical knowledge we already possess. Protect is mentioned for the hunter, organisations and Game Victoria by enhancing the skills of the assessors. The integrity of the breed. This is of the utmost importance we all love hounds by there deed and their nature. We cannot put ourselves before the structural integrity of our hounds. We all seek to improve our hounds lets do so with the shared leaning of hundreds of years. The first rego day was held at Alexandra, as part of the Upper Goulburn branch expo. We had some 60 dog presented on the day. Of which we had 8 dogs that failed to comply to the required breed standards. ADA has started a back to the future move by reintroducing the photographing of hounds at registration. This is an add level of integrity of the process and speaking form experience a great aid in the recovery of lost or stolen hounds. With the changes made in the process we can not assess a hound till it is at least 12 month of age. As all hounds must be registered to hunt the department has come up with a paper based puppy per registration for dog under the age of 12 months. Hunts can download the form from the net or get a copy from the branch, fill it in and post it to the department for processing. This will enable hunts to train pups under 12 month before they are required to be accessed and registered. Import reminder to all hunters. With the changes to the regulations you no longer need to have you full address on the hound s collar. You must however have the hounds registration number hard stamped on a tag on the collar. Always check the game guide for the last and up to date information on your requirements when hunting in the field. Ignorance is no excuse in the eyes of the law. Sambars Roar 9

Venison sausages will be available for lunch, donated by Gino Lendaro There will be a proficiency test held on the 2 nd. Of March 2013 at the SSAA range at Eagle Park. There is will not be a full accreditation at this stage. Charles Mchugh Has a shooting platform on display at the club and wants comments on what we can do to improve on it. He also mentions how this form of hunting is used in Europe. Charles will be talking to Hancocks to see if the platform could be used in there plantation. 8.6 Hunting Dog Advisory Report Craig Hill As for my talk on the hound assessor pilot training course.(i was half asleep) I spoke briefly about some of the content and the lady who presented the course Glenys Alexander international show judge and trainer of judges. l spoke of the level of formation she was able to impart to some very experienced hounds and long term breeds in a very short space of time. It will include the rego days as well. 8.7 Branch Hunt Gino Lendaro No hunting as yet as it is still too hot and dangerous due to extreme weather. 9. General Business Westernport Branch has sent out an invitation to all members to their Barbeque which will be held at the Upper Yarra Reservoir. The poison to be used is compound 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) which is contained within an approved bait type for the pest species. Poisoning will occur from 05/03/2013 to 28/05/2013 after which time DPI will collect and dispose of untaken and unused baits in accordance with the Directions for the Use of 1080 Pest Animal Bait Products in Victoria. When used in accordance with the product label and the Directions for the Use of 1080 Pest Animal Bait Products in Victoria the chances of non-target animal impacts are reduced but there is still some associated risk. By being aware of the dangers you are able to help manage the risk. To minimise the risk of poisoning to your animals you are advised: 1. Confine, muzzle and /or restrain your domestic animals, particularly dogs and cats, to prevent them from accessing 1080 pest animal poison baits or carcasses. 2. Domestic animals, particularly dogs and cats, are susceptible to primary poisoning from ingesting 1080 pest animal bait products and secondary poisoning from ingesting contaminated carcasses. It is unusual for domestic animals to scavenge on dog carcasses. 3. Closely monitor the health and behaviour of your domestic pets. If you notice any unusual or uncharacteristic behaviour contact your local veterinarian immediately. 4.
