PRESIDENTS REPORT Welcome to the August President Report, my last to you as your President, before the AGM, Dinner, Speaker and Election at the end of the month. So far I have been surprised at the small number of nominations for membership of the committee, with 3 people nominating in time for the publication of the Bulletin. Ben McKee and Michele Bayley have been giving outstanding service on the current committee as Sports Subcommittee chair and Membership Secretary respectively and I commend them both for your consideration. Andrew Bayley has, I believe, performed incredibly well in his position as the key member of the Bulletin editorial group and his work would be made easier and much more effective from a position within the committee. I would very much like to see him given this opportunity. I know that some of you are still considering your position and you are reminded that you must have a correctly filled out nomination form in the hands of secretary Noel Peers by 7:30 PM Friday, 18 August. If nominations exceed 6 people then an election will be required. It would be good for the club to be in this situation. Regardless of whether an election is needed, the AGM and Dinner promises to be a marvelous social gathering with good food and a chance to listen to a highly informative motorsport speaker, Aaron Noonan, who started his career with our club. Do not miss this occasion. I am standing down from committee along with some fellow old timers who believe we have fulfilled our promise to move the club back to an even keel. I believe the way forward to be full of promise for the next generation. In my personal situation I am facing a month of medical treatment followed not too long afterwards by a requirement to spend about 6 weeks in North America with Jenny continuing research activities started last year. I do not believe sporadic attendance at the club would be appropriate for an office bearer, but will continue to contribute when I am able. In the meantime, I would like to thank the other 11 members of the Committee team who have worked industriously to bring the club to a good place. Together we have achieved good progress on the 5 most important areas that we identified at our first meeting. These were; to create and register with Consumer Affairs Victoria an appropriate Constitution for our club; to set in place appropriate protection for our club via insurance policies; to upgrade the activities of the Sports Subcommittee to ensure that all events were run as calendared and are not cancelled or postponed; to improve Club communication via an upgraded Bulletin and the use of social media; and to smooth out difficulties associated with the Club s use of the H plate scheme for classic and historic vehicles. You will also have noticed that monthly meetings have had a particular activity programmed for each night. Much remains to be done on many issues ranked slightly behind these in order of urgency. The new committee will still be busy! Our club still needs a new motorsport home. Those of you who attended the July monthly meeting will have heard Ken Marriot s concept for a cooperative venture between motorsport clubs and various industry partners. Due to the fact that the elected Ballarat City Council has backpedaled enormously on their previous enthusiasm for this project we are now trying to progress other options. I acknowledge the dedication of John Phillips who continues to push this project with all his available contacts. You may have noticed a recent front-page Courier article and a very supportive editorial on our behalf. Those of you who are interested and have the ability to attend are hereby notified that a reporter from the Courier will be attending at our club rooms at 5 PM on Thursday, 17 August in order to talk with selected representatives of our club, other motorsport clubs, industry and manufacturing groups who all stand to make use of such a venue to advance our sport, their businesses and to bring highly desirable economic activity in the order of perhaps $100 million per year to the region. It is up to us to now make the running on this issue which our elected representatives seem to be ignoring. We thank the Courier in advance for the community interest that they are supporting. We are looking for several interesting cars for pictorial purposes to attend this gathering. If you think you can assist or would just like to listen then please give me a call on or leave a message on See you all at the AGM Dinner Night Keith McElroy President The Ballarat Light Car Club Bulletin July

EDITORIAL REPORT I apologise for the lack of recent event results as this Bulletin is on a fairly tight deadline due to the upcoming elections and some reports could not make it in. It s only been two weeks after some of our club members drove out to Narringal Homestead to bury John Stretch at his family plot, it s been an experience to remember and is a sobering reminder about not forgetting those around you. While we ve been saying farewell to John we also say farewell to the current Committee members at our AGM which is back on for 2017, with Ex-Supercars commentator Aaron Noonan coming along to give a talk about his career and a 3 Course Dinner on the cards too. It promises to be a great night and there are still tickets available all around Ballarat! The Sunday after the AGM is the rescheduled MK and KX that had been postponed due to a clash with Off Road Rush with the event after that being the Wings and Wheels Sprint and Motorkhana at Maryborough in September. 7 Becoming an Accredited Club Official. Why bother? Here s Why. Motorsport is about competition, is it not? One-on-one. The fastest car and driver to finish gets the Trophy. It is me against you. And it s Good Stuff. MEMBER REPORT Membership Renewals A friendly reminder that memberships were due at the end of June. Renewal forms have been posted. Michele Bayley mbbayley@bigpond.com Clubs like BLCC exist to allow us as paid up members to come together so we can participate in this motorsport competition. So we can compete against each other. As individuals. May the best person - and car win. But in order to put on these events that we compete against each other in as individuals, we need qualified officials to run them. In fact, we need a Team of officials for every event. Sometimes, like MotoCross or an H-Plate run, we need just a few. Sometimes, like the Tunbridge Rally, we need a bagfull. As a rule, we generally need around the same number of officials as competitors. So running motorsport events is a Team activity. What this boils down to really is that every member who competes as an individual - whether it be autocross, rally, Hillclimb or track, ought to give serious thought to also becoming a part of the BLCC Officials Team, as an accredited official, Many of us do it for events we re not active in I like competing in Autocross, and I like Officialling at Rallies. So as a Club, we need to be both. Individuals as Competitors AND a Team as Officials. The Club will be running some Club Chief Training during October, this is probably the best accreditation you could get, so watch this space for the date. It will be an all day show. You d need to have your General Official s accreditation to do it, If you haven t got your General Official ticket, go to the CAMS website you can get it Right Heeeeeeeeere become-an-official Ian Brain The Ballarat Light Car Club Bulletin July

NOMINATION STATEMENTS Ben McKee Hi, I have been a member of the Ballarat Light Car Club for approximately 20 years and I have been very involved with a lot of the club s motorsports. I have been helping out with the running of events for a long while now and know what is required to get things done. I have also spent some time looking after the Autocross track. I am keen to be part of the Sports Subcommittee going forward to help make sure that our events are organized & run. My interests are in the car club s future, so my boys have the opportunities also to enjoy all that the club has to offer. So I am keen to help give the club a stable base going forwards. Thanks, Ben McKee Andrew Bayley Hello, I ve been in the club for a short while now and have found myself involved in just about every event for the last four years whilst also working as the Clubroom s Cleaner and currently, Editor of the Bulletin. If elected, this will allow me to work on the Bulletin within the Committee, rather than working on it from the outside which will not only give me a better understanding of the running of the club, but will also give the general club member a better insight into their club too as the end result will be a better Bulletin. Michele Bayley I have been a member of the BLCC for the past 5 years and have been the Membership Secretary for all that time. I enjoy meeting new members and helping when we have events on, doing the booking in and whatever else is needed. I also enjoy going to Mt Leura and I help out wherever I can. 8 The Ballarat Light Car Club Bulletin July 2017

JOHN STRETCH MEMORIAL On the morning of the Second of August 2017, the BLCC gathered to pay respects to the late John Stretch. We gathered in the rear carpark of F.W Barnes and Son before the Courier arrived to take pictures of the club cars lined up along the front of Barnes. The procession of club cars started off from F.W Barnes at 10am, led by Keith in his survivor MG Sedan making a steady pace to Narringal Homestead, arriving around 11:20am. The local contingent had been waiting for our procession and after a quick pause to park the lower of our cars, the group of around 35 people headed to the Cemetery. It s a little parcel of land on the other side of the creek, to which a small bridge was constructed for the day. A brief service followed, where Ian Getsom made a speech and buried John with his parents before another speech from one of the locals who spoke of his memories of John, his memories of John being the Santa at the local fair and his wider involvement in the community. It was a pleasant sight to see and hear of so many people who knew John attending the service and it goes to show the popularity of the man to have such a turn-out for a second memorial, 41 years on. While John had been forgotten at the funeral home, there were still many people who held fond memories of the man. J.C Stretch Park on the Rokewood-Skipton Road. 13 GUEST SPEAKER - AARON NOONAN Aaron Noonan has been a mainstay of the modern day Australian motorsport scene since his early days with Australian Motorsport News, he continued up the ranks and was the PR manager of the Carrera Cup and Holden Motorsports, which included HRT and Kmart racing at the time. After his PR career, Aaron then became a commentator for the V8 Supercars, becoming the public face of statistics on the broadcast. Working with Channel Seven gave him access to the Seven archives, leading to the Magic Moments of Motorsport DVD range which features whole Bathursts not seen since the day they aired. At the same time, Aaron worked on Seven s Legends of Motorsports series, working as a co-host and introducing segments that featured video that had been sourced from the Seven archives. Currently, Aaron operates V8 Sleuth, a database that tracks around 400 V8 Supercars and also keeps tabs on Group C, A and Super Touring cars. He has also worked with Fox Sport, SPEED and also operates AN1 Data Service which provides statistical services to motorsport, continuing the trends of tracking history he had started during his commentary career and continues to this day with V8 Sleuth. 16 WINTON SPRINTS For a round of our 2017 Club Driver Championship some 8 BLCC members travelled up to Winton Motor raceway near Benalla on Saturday 24th June. Although at least 6 were there to be part of the Pedders No Bull Series which in most instances they have completed other rounds there were a couple of us that made the trek because it was a round of our CDC. It is a long time since your scribe was at Winton which I think was probably over 20 years ago. It made it interesting when booking in when asked what time I expected to do because when I was there last I was in a totally different car but more importantly the track was shorter then. One of our cheeky BLCC types reminded me to make sure I turned left onto the additional straights and didn t shortcut through where the track used to go. It would have made for good times but not quite legal. So I jumped in with the juniors and the beginners. Well the juniors have no fear and some pretty quick machinery and certainly know how to find the limits. Keith remarked at one stage that my group were making me keep my eyes wide open as they seemed to have a propensity to do a bit of waltzing around as they explored the limits of grip. It also meant that the yellow caution lights came on fairly often which meant we had to lift off a bit. Arriving at the track early on the Saturday morning we were greeted with a pea souper of a fog. The start had to be delayed until the fog lifted. The day then panned out to a great day weatherwise even though the weather bureau had been promising showers all week. The clouds threatened to spoil our party a few times but we got through with out any moisture spoiling our day. Another competitors car dropped a copious amount of oil along about half the track which created another delay whilst it was cleaned up. Pretty sure the engine would have been bit rattly as there shouldn't have been any oil left in it as it made its way back to the pits. Dylan Simonis was the quickest from BLCC in a Falcon narrowly pipping Richard Gay in the Pulsar. Richard was pretty pleased with himself having broken the record for the APAR Class that the Pulsar falls into. Murray Rogers was next of our crew in a Mirage that Murray had fairly singing on the day. Les Noonan has certainly been superseded as Captain Revalot as Muzza s Mirage certainly had a lot of revs on board. Josh Gay was next in the Pulsar. Sadly both Josh and Dylan were in my group which meant I wasn t able to get any photos of them. They were also better behaved than a few others in our group too and didn t spin or get out of shape and just proceeded to lay down quick times. 16 The Ballarat Light Car Club Bulletin July 2017

WINTON SPRINTS Keith McElroy in his familiar Red Subaru was next for us without Geoffrey to co-pilot him. I think Geoffrey stayed in the pits along side a rather quick Reno Clio that his chauffer took great interest in. If our editor can find room to stick all the photos I have provided in the Bulletin (I certainly have! -ed) there is one of a SSS Pulsar behind Keith which happens to be facing the wrong way. Perhaps he thought we were doing a reverse test in a motorkahna or more likely found the limit of grip and round she went. I know the feeling having done the same last time I was there when I entered the start/finish straight facing the wrong way. Joe Viccars ventured out in a newly acquired Mazda MX5 which Joe said he only had 3 days to prepare having only just got it. Joe remarked that is wasn t quite setup the way he would like so I expect we will see it again only a bit more sorted and ultimately quicker as Joe re-engineers it. Paul Keast also ventured up with the Corolla that use to be Joe s previously. Paul had i little moment at one stage which sadly I hadn t quite made it back to my photo vantage point to be share it with you. Paul was more than pleased that I hadn t managed to snap it for all to see. Last was yours truly in the newly acquired Laser. I was happy to back at the track after a long hiatus and slowly improved times as the day went as I reacquainted myself with the parts of the track I knew plus the new bits. I also had to come to terms with crossing over to the darkside being in both a Ford and a front wheel drive car having previously been there in a rear wheel drive Gemini. These sprint days are well run and great value for money. We had 12 flying laps and 4 standing start laps plus a ten minute practice session at the start of the day all for $120. The Benalla Auto Club who runs the day scores it as a total of the best Flying lap plus the best standing lap which will explain the times in the results when you see them. The track surface is really weird and makes your tyres sound really strange. They roared which was a bit disconcerting at first but once I got used to it and assumed it was all was OK I just accepted it as normal. Hopefully it was. The standing lap was understandably slower than the flying laps and I could feel the tyres squirming around until they came up to temperature. All in all a great day and hopefully I get to do it again only next time I hope not to have to wait another 20 years. 18 WINTON RALLYCROSS Saturday 15 th and Sunday 16 th of July seen the first running of RXAus rallycross championship run in Victoria. BLCC were well represented over the weekend. Darren Windus and Jamie Sargent in AWD class : Arron Windus and Richard Gay in the two wheel drive class. Saturday started late due to the thick fog around the Winton track. With a quick practice which saw Arron Windus and his Mazda only complete 2 laps due to a misfire, Richard Gay found it tough going in his Nissan Pulsar circuit car. The dirt section of the track cut up a bit rough due to the rain during the week. Darren Windus and Jamie Sargent seemed to come to grips with their toys for the weekend. Sat.
