2 TAKIN IT TRACKSIDE By Toby Batchelder When you go 5 for 8 at the plate in a baseball doubleheader, that is a great day! When you go 5 for 8 on scheduled race nights, you are batting well below the Mendoza line. Even though Crash Davis created a rainout in the movie Bull Durham, I can assure you track management is not turning on the sprinklers in the sky. They want to see the pit full of cars and the stands full of race fans enjoying their Friday night. I know missing a week puts me in the bit of a funk as I am sure it does you too. Schedules get thrown off. Struggles with television show offerings cause confusion. Happy Hour sees some faces on Fridays they normally don t. Freedom is not a good thing for some of us. While it has been some time since the checkers last flew, let s recap where we left off. We saw three new feature winners on the season Kodi Sabins (T-Bird Mini Mart Wildcats), Joe Tetreault (Pepsi Limited Sportsman), and Craig Smith (R.E. Hinkley Super Streets). We witnessed some great finishes in the Supers and Casella Modifieds. We all enjoyed a great night of racing as the program ran just over 3 hours. So we will try it again this week, weather permitting of course. I know I look forward to Friday nights at the track. There is something therapeutic about the smell of race fuel and burnt rubber, the look on someone s face after they climb out of the car victorious, the kid cheering on his favorite driver from the grandstands, or the number of laughs we all have during those short hours together. Even though I am a bit late to the game, I wouldn t want to be anywhere else on a Friday night. Claremont Speedway is proud to have LinMat Photos, Video, & Graphics on-board as the track photographer this season. Tyke and Linda Matheson have years of experience photographing auto racing and add their own special touch to their craft. 3 Cornish s Jeff Morse led the first 15 laps of the R.E. Hinkley Super Street feature after starting on the outside of the front row. He recorded his 1st top 10 of the year by finishing 8th. Brian Robie was a new entry to the Casella Modifieds this week. Unfortunately for Brian, mechanical issues just before the feature was to start forced him pitside for the night. Prospect, CT s Nick Salva is 2nd in the Newport Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Point Standings after finishing 4th in the feature.

SUPER STREETS Newport s Craig Smith is all smiles after picking up his first win on fhe season. Age before beauty, a common phrase used to make fun or mock pity on others. However, the R.E. Hinkley Super Street feature saw an Old Bone prove there was no making fun in this instance.

Once again sporting the throwback paint scheme covered in notes, this was Smith s 2nd podium finish after capturing 3rd in the Dean Smith 52-Lap Memorial Race and 3rd top 5 in as many weeks.

4 SUPER STREETS Newport s Craig Smith is all smiles after picking up his first win on fhe season. Age before beauty, a common phrase used to make fun or mock pity on others. However, the R.E. Hinkley Super Street feature saw an Old Bone prove there was no making fun in this instance. Newport s Craig Smith used his backup car once again and took the lead from Bryan Town with one to go to win his first feature of the season. Once again sporting the throwback paint scheme covered in notes, this was Smith s 2nd podium finish after capturing 3rd in the Dean Smith 52-Lap Memorial Race and 3rd top 5 in as many weeks. to re-fire from the back setting up the first of 2 green-white-checkered finishes. Smith was able to get by Town in Turn 3 to pick up the victory. Current point leader, Hayden Scott, finished 2nd while Town locked down 3rd. Dylan Bodreau grabbed his 4th top 5 of the season by finishing 4th. Charlestown s Ryan Currier snatched his 1st top 5 of the season by placing 5th. Jeff Morse started on the outside of Row 2 and looked to be the car to beat early as he would race out to a large lead in front of the 20-car field. A caution on Lap 14 would bring everyone back together when Charlestown s Ben Poland would capitalize. Poland would take the lead on Lap 16 and guide the field with Town and Ricky Bly in view. Bly moved to 2nd after a restart on Lap 35 but contact with Poland in Turn 2 would send Poland around with 2 to go. Both Poland and Bly would need

5 IN THE DRIVER S SEAT Ryan Currier was happy with his car after practice sessions were complete and it showed as he finished 5th - his best finish this season. After a wreck last week junked his car, Drew Davis arrived just before the start of the evening with a new paint scheme for him. In fact, it was a whole new ride - Aaron Fellow s old car minus the engine. The division has now seen 5 different winners in as many races. It took until Race 12 last year before we had our 5th different winner. Rookie Alex Poisson lost a driveshaft during the first practice. After examining, the transmission also cracked so he was unable to start any event during the evening. Zach Jewett has 2 top 10 s in his last two times out including a season best 6th this week. Kenny Fowler grabbed his 2nd top 10 of the year after finishing 9th. He started 17th.Lenny Silver joined that club too by claiming 7th. 20 cars started the event. 11 were able to finish. Seven cautions did slow the race which took nearly 37 minutes to complete. Charlestown s Ryan Currier picked up his 1st top 5 of the season after finishing 5th in his Outlaw Racing entry. Dylan Bodreau grabbed his 4th top 5 in 5 races as he finished 4th. Bodreau started 9th.

Ben Poland was one lap away from winning his 1st feature since 2015 but contact with Ricky Bly in Turn 2 looped Poland. He finished 10th. Kenny Fowler (8) ended up 9th during the feature. This was his 2nd top 10 of the season.

12 MODIFIEDS In the Casella Modified division, KIXX Victory Lane will now be known as Washington as Mr. Smith went there yet again by holding off 13-time Claremont champion Dwight Jarvis on a green-white-checkered finish to pick up his 2nd feature win. Jarvis finished 2nd while Claremont s Jeff Murray grabbed his second 3rd place finish in as many outings. After winning the full-field heat race, Dylan Rock started on the pole and paced the first four laps until engine trouble cut his night short. Dana Smith, having already moved into second, found himself out in front after Rock s luck turned. Murray followed Smith around the 1/3 mile oval until Jarvis was able to get by late in the race. Nick Salva finished 4th while Brandee Tree had her best finish of the season coming home 5th. The Modifieds are back in action this week. The Valenti Modified Racing Series makes its only visit to the speedway on July 7 while the special event for the Casella Modifieds takes place on August 4. Look for details on the event in the near future. Brian Robie and Scott MacMichael arrived after practice as both were finishing their cars. Robie was able to make his heat race while the X Machine of MacMichael was only able to start the feature. Brandee Tree picked up her 1st top 5 of the year in the #84. Jeff Murray s new car does not give him sticker shock as he picked up his 2nd podium in 2 chances.

13 Dana Smith held off Dwight Jarvis on a green-white-checkered restart to pick up his 2nd feature win of the season. Dwight Jarvis followed up the last event s win by finishing 2nd in his 2nd start of the year. Moving up is Jeff Murray s only option as he finished 3rd in his 2nd event of the 2017 season.

16 LIMITED SPORTSMAN Joe Tetreault became the division s 4th different winner this season by leading all 25 laps. In the sporting world, each game can be a different experience unless you re the Cleveland Browns for the most part. Thankfully Joe Tetreault s car isn t brown and orange. After a last place finish the previous week, Tetreault started on the pole this time out and led all 25 laps en route to his first feature win of the season. Rookie Chris Colburn finished 2nd for his best showing of the season. Current point leader Tyler Janovsky finished 3rd for his 5th podium finish in as many races. The Polish Prince now has a slim 5 point lead on Hot Stuff Kenny Thompson as Thompson was unable to finish the event as he went pit side on Lap 15 with a cut tire under green. Chris Gilbert finished 4th for his best finish thus far while Briana Akusis did the same as she finished 5th. The Limited Sportsman were scheduled to run with the Street Stock Showdown Series last week but because of the rainout, that will be rescheduled. Josh Ruel suffered damage in the heat race and was unable to make the feature. The race took only 9 minutes to complete as only 1 caution for a spin slowed the action.

20 Chris Carver and Seth Melcher battle in early heat race action. It was Melcher s first time out this season. Craig Smith (52) and Jeff Morse heading down the front stretch. Smith made a move on Lap 38 on Bryan Town in Turn 3 to win the the feature event. Craig Smith (97), Chris Jackman (middle), and Ricky Bly are 3-wide during heat races for the R.E. Hinkley Super Streets. Bly won his heat race.

22 WILDCATS Kodi Sabins picked up his 1st win of the season after a runner-up last week. The Commander Kodi Sabins took control on Lap 17 and never ran away from the field picking up his 1st feature win and 2nd podium finish of the year in 2 outings. Running part-time this year, Sabins waited in the wings by moving to 3rd by Lap 8 and 2nd by Lap 16, before being able to get by Zach Lyn to take the lead for good. After leading 12 laps, Lyn ended up 3rd as Greg Millette finished in the runner-up spot for the 2nd time this year. Dale Squires Jr. continued his strong start to the season by finishing 4th, his 5th top 5. Kyle Currier finished 5th while Nick Little, Sam Giveen, Jim Carley, Hillary Renaud, and Samantha Stoddard rounded out the Top different feature winners for T-Bird Mini Mart Wildcats have visited KIXX Victory Lane this season. At this time, 21 drivers are currently eligible to compete in their extra distance event, the Cody Lafont Memorial Twin 25 s, on July 21. The $ 500 to win event as well as $ 75 segment winner bonuses highlight an increased purse for the 4-cylinders. He also surprised his then bride-to-be with a bouquet of flowers from Putnam s Colonial Florist during the intermission on Friday night. Even better, he finished 5th, his 3rd top 5 of the season. Greg Millette continued his impressive 2017 season with his 2nd runner-up finish and 5th podium. A couple of new faces joined the ranks this week as Hillary Renaud and Seth Melcher raced this week. This was the largest starting lineup thus far this season. The division has boasted 3 different winners in 5 races. Last year, 6 different winners took the checkers around the oval. No cautions slowed this event which was much different from last week. Zach Lyn may not know if but someone is trying to steal his hot rod in Victory Lane as he came home 3rd for his 4th podium of the year. Sam Giveen (41) and Jim Carley (66) head through the turn. Giveen enjoyed his best finish of his rookie campaign with a 7th. Carley finished 8th for his 5th top 10.

The Race Against Cancer Event will be held August 25 with the rain date set for August 26. Last year, race teams and fans were able to raise $ 30,000 for the organization. A driver s starting position was based the amount of money raised. That practice will likely continue this season. The mission of the Friends of Norris Cotton Cancer Center is to support the work of Norris Cotton Cancer Center by raising funds for cancer research and patient services, increasing awareness for this nationally recognized Comprehensive Cancer Center, and acting as ambassadors between the Cancer Center and the communities it serves. Norris Cotton Cancer Center is a world-renowned cancer treatment and research facility affiliated with The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Volunteers raise money, produce events, and facilitate community outreach in an effort to find a cure for cancer. Look for more details in the near future.
