1 Grace Episcopal Church invites you to attend their organ recital this Thursday, May 15th at noon 216 East 6th Street Brendan Jones will be performing works by J.S. Bach, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Jean Langlais and William Mathias. This 15-minute performance is free and open to the public. Additional recitals will be at noon on May 22nd (Wayne Eastham) & May 29th (Stephen Wiggin). All performances feature Grace Church s historic Estey Pipe Organ that was installed at Grace Church in 1906, a gift of John C. Latham, Jr., in memory of his mother, Virginia, a long-time member of the Grace Church choir. The cost of the organ at that time was $2,700. Today, the equivalent would cost about $250,000. 4 2014 Little River Days Festival Family Fun Since 81! The 2014 Little River Days Festival, Thursday through Saturday, May 15 th through 17 th, will be another great event in downtown Hopkinsville. The fun will begin Thursday at 5pm, with Hopkinsville Appreciation Night, an evening of nothin but great carnival rides and amusements with $5 off unlimited ride wristbands. Then, be back on Friday at 10am, when all of our vendors will be open for business. During lunch, First Dance DJ Services will be playing your favorite tunes, while our vendors serve your favorite foods and beverages. Find unique items for sale and bargains galore from a variety of merchants all day, Friday and Saturday. There will be two nights of great musical entertainment, beginning with The Respectables, Nashville's premier party band, on Friday night. Then, on Saturday evening, enjoy foot stompin country rock with The Katie Austin Band. On Saturday, don t miss comedy ventriloquist, Ken Karter, and the Funny Dummy Show at noon; and the 2014 Hoptown Talent Showcase Finals at 1pm. All entertainment is free of charge! 11 What is the Soap Box Derby? The All-American Soap Box Derby, The Greatest Amateur Racing Event in the World, is a youth gravity racing program for boys and girls ages through 18 years old. The goals of the Soap Box Derby program have not changed since it began in 1934: to promote families working together, to teach children some basic skills of workmanship along with the spirit of competition and the perseverance to continue a project to completion. Across the United States and around the world, family time is spent together building Soap Box Derby cars. Lifelong bonds are developed as the Derby Experience is shared. The Soap Box Derby is a program that will provide cherished memories that you will enjoy for a lifetime. Where do I begin? Contact the local Derby Director at for information on the local race. Find out about construction clinics and/or other programs that may be of assistance to you. Decide which type of car you wish to build. The local Derby Director will be able to help you with this information. You might want to look for a sponsor to help underwrite the cost of your racer. You will normally need to purchase a car assembly kit and a set of Z-Glas racing wheels. Read the official plans and build your car exactly as the instructions indicate. Plan to attend a construction clinic to help you understand the regulations and guide you in building a safe and competitive car. Participate in your local All-American Race. What are the Race Divisions? Stock Division The Stock Division is for racers ages -13 years old. Stock Cars can accommodate a racer up to (approx.) 5 3 tall and 125 lbs. The Stock Car, a lean-forward design, is sold as a kit which includes everything needed for racing with the exception of Z-Glas racing wheels and weight. Because painting is not permitted on the Stock Car shell, drivers have their choice of purchasing one of three colored shells: red, white, or blue. Builders should allow 4-6 hours to assemble their Stock division car. Super Stock Division The Super Stock Division, is designed for racers ages 9-18 years old. Super Stock Cars can accommodate a larger racer up to (approx.) 6 0 tall and 150 lbs. The Super Stock, a lean-forward designed car, is also sold as a kit which includes everything needed for racing with the exception of Z-Glas racing wheels and weight. Builders should allow 4-6 hours to assemble their Super Stock division car. Masters Division The Masters Division is for racers ages years old and is usually dr iven by mor e experienced drivers. Masters Cars can accommodate a child up to (approx.) 6 0 tall and 160 lbs. Because of the laydown design of the Masters car, small drivers are also competitive in this division. Division Winners The Stock, Super Stock and Masters Division winners in the local race will receive a stipend to help with expenses to represent Hopkinsville at the National Soap Box Derby contest in Akron, Ohio How do I Become a Sponsor? If your company or business would like to become a sponsor in the 201 Hopkinsville Soap Box Derby Race contact a member of the Hopkinsville Kiwanis Club Soap Box Derby Committee (names and numbers listed on the back of this brochure). This year, the Soap Box Derby will again feature a challenge for the adult racers.
