We stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. The reading of the minutes was waived, as there was no meeting last month. Treasurer s report: Report was given by Gordon in the absence of Ron. New Members or Guests: Jim and Sherri Hyder. Past Events: Coquille Car show was last weekend. 4-5 club members got trophies. The Adams House retirement show was yesterday. It was a nice show and they would like to try it again. Ray and Mike both won that the Myrtle Creek Show. Hot Rods and Hallelujahs in Sutherlin had their first show, Joe Chambers won. Sam Wilson just got back from Hot August Nights, the jag didn't sell. Don Larson went to the Lutheran church, him and Gordon both won. Old Business: Thanks to those that helped at the show n shine. There were 600+ cars. The car corral did well; the poker walk was a success. Cascade community credit union is going to take over the poker walk next year. The

2 teen center that did parking for first time did well. Gordon gave the totals made in each area of the show. Great success. Good of the Order: Gordon read a card that Ray gave us speaking of how happy Doris was to be part of the Stray Angels. She will be missed by all. Roger and Dorothea state that they are missing metal signs that were used in the March and Medford Show displays. They will be looked for. New Business: Dana made motion and Jerry seconded it to have the teen center park cars again next year. Don states they need at least four more people. Don Larson stores the club trailer at his home under a canvas canopy. He had to replace the canvas. Jerry made motion and Dana seconded it to reimburse the $135 that Don paid for replacement. Decisions need to be made on charities. In the past Doernbecher and the cancer center were each given $1,000. Ron would like to see Meals on Wheels and the unit at the VA that helps homeless veteran's get donations. Gordon opened the floor regarding other charities ideas were: Camp millennium St Jude's Dale Bowman pond (pond where handicap adults and children can fish) Douglas Community Library Association Douglas Special Equipment Fund These will be discussed at the next meeting. On August 26, NASCAR will be at the Douglas County Speedway. From 12-2 classic cars can be brought n and the driver gets in free. The next meeting will be on the 3rd Sunday in September as many officers will be out of town at the Seaside show on the normal Sunday. The next meeting will be on September 17. The meeting room reservation has been changed. Bob Bright spoke of needing a first aid kid in the pavilion at the show. Rob will put together a proper kit. Sam states that the Friendship Meet at Lost Creek Lake on August 20 has been cancelled due to the fires. Dell states that there are show-n-shine shirts leftover and for sale for $10. Gordon states there are also dash plaques for those that worked the show and didn't get one. 3 What Labor Day Means For most people, Labor Day means two things: a day off and a chance to say goodbye to the summer. However, why is it called Labor Day? Labor Day is a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women. It has been celebrated as a national holiday in the United States and Canada since The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885, Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country. In the USA, governmental recognition first came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. September Car History September 3, 1900, the first car ever made in Flint, Michigan makes its debut in the town s Labor Day parade. Designed and built by a county judge and weekend tinkerer named Charles H. Wisner, the car, nicknamed the Buzz- Wagon, was one of the only cars built in Flint that did not end up being produced by General Motors. In the end, only three of the Wisner machines were ever built. September 13, 1899, Henry Bliss became the first pedestrian killed by an automobile in the U.S. Bliss, a Manhattan real estate salesman, had just stepped off a streetcar at West 74 th Street and Central Park West when he was struck by a passing taxicab. He died the following morning. September , at 5:45 PM on this day, 24-yearold actor James Dean is killed in Cholame, California, when the Porsche he is driving hits a Ford Tudor sedan at an intersection. The driver of the other car, 23-year-old California Polytechnic State University student Donald Turnupseed, was dazed but mostly uninjured; Dean s passenger, German Porsche mechanic Rolf Wütherich was badly injured but survived. Only one of Dean s movies, East of Eden, had been released at the time of his death ( Rebel Without a Cause and Giant opened shortly afterward), but he was already on his way to superstardom and the crash made him a legend.
