1 OFFICIALS GAZETTE 2018 FORMULA 1 ROLEX AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX FROM THE EDITOR For the last 21 years I have enjoyed officiating at the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park, interviewing officials and being the Editor of the Officials Gazette since The Officials Gazette is fun to produce, and our team has worked well together for the past 12 years. Ron Searle, an Aussie living in Houston and Michael Shaw from Sydney have been the eyes of the meeting with their cameras madly snapping the sights and sounds of this year s meeting. Stalwart Lynne Huntting has again flown across from the US to impart her knowledge and conduct interviews for the Gazette (Ron and Lynne also produce the Formula 1 Austin Grand Prix Officials Newsletter at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin Texas). Meaghan McNeill provided transport and logistics for the Gazette team for which we are truly grateful. Thanks again for the opportunity to put together the Officials Gazette for 2018 and remember that ALL copies are now loaded onto the CAMS website, so download them at your convenience. Cheers Richard McLean Gazette Editor rich.mac@bigpond.net.au LINK ONLINE: ISSUE 5 / PAGE 1

3 TIM SCHENKEN Tim Schenken, AGP CAMS/FIA Clerk of Course, was just inducted into the 2018 Australian Motor Sport Hall of Fame, along with an impressive list of notable and significant Australians. He said he was quite honored. In 2016 he received the Medal of the Order of Australia, as part of the Queen s Birthday honours. Tim said the HOF topped this off. At AGP, Tim is Clerk of the Course and he s been in Race Control ever since the first AGP in He was just hired the year before by CAMS to head up Race Operations. Since that time, he s also been the Race Director for the Australian Touring Car Series, which has evolved into today s Supercars, with Tim remaining in that position the whole time. Tim now is also director of CAMS and chairs the CAMS Organising Committee. For the inaugural AGP, Tim and the late Peter Nelson, who was AGP Secretary of the Meeting, wrote the first Minute By Minute schedule, which has now been copied and used universally. For that race it came out in pocket-sized, spiral-bound form to fit in the pockets of their CAMS-issued white cotton overalls. Tim credits Peter as being the architect of modern Grand Prix organization. Some of his innovations are now standardly used in F1. It was Peter s idea to have a Muster Tent for the morning marshal s meetings, overnight overalls cleaning, and more. Australia was the first country to have officials licensing and training. Several key Aussies attended three Grands Prix in America, prior to Adelaide - two in Detroit and one in Dallas. They didn t go off quite as smoothly as had hoped, but Tim says one learns by mistakes. It s always a challenge. Formula One is the only truly global sport and it needs to be right. Currently, Tim is the President of the FIA Circuits Commission, eight inspectors in this group inspect circuits worldwide. Tim s area is mainly Asia. Other inspectors include FIA s Charlie Whiting, and Tony Cotman of the US. Tim has been on the Commission for ten years, eight of which he was the Vice President, and a year as President. He will age out next year and pass on the head role. Tim started his racing career in Australia, doing local hill climbs. In 1964, at the age of 22, Tim went to Europe where he raced for twenty years. He did the whole F1 pathway including F3, FF, F2 and F1. This pathway is now being used again in a similar fashion. F2 is a great gauge of one s talent for F1. Tim raced in 35 Grands Prix, from 1970 to 1974, being on the podium in 1971 at the Austrian Grand Prix. He earned seven Championship Points. Tim retired from racing in He is one of only five Australian drivers to have been on a F1 podium. The others are the late Sir Jack Brabham, Alan Jones, Mark Webber, and Daniel Ricciardo. He then raced sports cars for several years, quite successfully in large international events. In 1976 Tim and Howden Ganley founded Tiga Race Cars, which built sports and formula cars. Ganley now resides in San Francisco. In Tim ran John Fitzpatrick s IMSA team in San Diego CA. He wanted to come back to Australia, and CAMS recruited and hired him in ISSUE 5 / PAGE 3

6 FINAL STEWARDS CUP TEAM The winners of the 2017 AGP Steward's Cup were Sector Two. It was a busy weekend for Sector Two, with so much happening, especially on Race Day with multiple incidents. The crew has been together for ten years, and last year they worked with the A Team and Form-Up, and at times Sector Two resembled A Team-Lite. Comments from the team on why they thought they won the Cup: Ten years of consistent enthusiasm and continual thirst for knowledge. There s no such thing as a silly question. Plus, overcoming enormous problems. On Race Day in Particular: Protecting Massa s car at race end and being personally thanked by him for safely escorting him away from the public. Great team work Gary McLean Sector Marshal, Comms - Bill Birney, Tony Bolin, Marion Duggan Flags - Paul Freeman, Stephen White, Paul Thornbury Track - Scott Petrie.
