3 Introducton The summer months wll see the culmnaton of four years plannng and preparaton for the NHS to ensure t contnues to provde busness as usual performance levels as well as meets any demand that results from the London 2012 Olympc and Paralympc Games and assocated cultural events. Whlst London s expected to be buser than usual durng ths perod, t has a comprehensve and flexble healthcare system that s used to meetng fluctuatons n demand and s well prepared for the Games and cultural events takng place. Ths reference gude has been developed to help the NHS n London to manage servces to resdents, vstors and Games Famly members durng the Games. Operatng Gudance for the NHS n London To help t to support, co-ordnate and report on the performance of the NHS n London durng the summer, NHS London has publshed Operatng Gudance for the NHS n London durng the 2012 Olympc and Paralympc Games (Concept of Operatons). The Operatng Gudance sets out: NHS London s approach to managng the NHS n London durng Games-tme the phases of operaton for NHS London and the NHS n London from steady state to major ncdent and the supportng processes the responsbltes for NHS London, PCT Clusters and Provders durng steady state and should an event arse that mght requre a future coordnated response. (Major ncdent procedures are descrbed separately n exstng plans and polces held locally the reportng system n place to provde the necessary regular reports to DH NHS Operatons durng the Games the role and functon of the Games Tme Coordnaton Centre (GTCC) NHS London s establshng to provde addtonal support to the NHS durng ths perod. 5 Advce for patents and publc Patent Advce and Lason Servces As London wll be partcularly busy durng the London 2012 Games, patents may be anxous that healthcare servces wll be adversely affected. Patent Advce and Lason Servces (PALS) can play an mportant role n reassurng patents, helpng them to navgate the NHS durng the Games, and also respondng to ther concerns. Transport for London has been advsed to drect enqures they receve from concerned patents to the respectve Trust Patent Advce and Lason Servce. It s advsed that Trusts bref ther Patent Advce and Lason Servces and swtchboard staff about handlng enqures from patents concerned about the mpact of the Games. Stayng healthy durng the Games The followng advce s recommended to encourage resdents and vstors to manage ther own health, as far as possble, durng the Games and to prevent llness and njury. Enjoy the sunshne safely When the sun shnes durng the London 2012 Games remember to: Apply generous amounts of at least SPF 15 sunscreen and top t up regularly Stay out of the sun and seek shade between 11am and 3pm when the rsk of burnng s hghest Wear a hat and choose clothng that wll keep you cool and covered Eat well If you are eatng out durng the Games, t s mportant to take care over what you eat. Make sure that: Any cooked food you eat s thoroughly cooked, kept steamng hot and s separated from raw food. Any cold food that you eat has been kept chlled n a chller or cool box. Stay hydrated Make sure you drnk plenty of water or other soft drnks durng the day so that you stay hydrated. If you re headng to a London 2012 sports event or ceremony there are restrctons on takng lquds nto venues. Drnkng water wll be avalable nsde for detals, vst the London 2012 webste. Whle publc transport s a great way to get around, t can get hot and stuffy, especally on the London underground, so carry water wth you on journeys. Drnk sensbly If you are drnkng alcohol, don t let t get n the way of you enjoyng the Games. Make sure you eat well and drnk water or soft drnks n between alcoholc drnks that way you won t rsk mssng any of the acton. Travel Well If you are out and about all day, whether travellng between venues, seeng the sghts or clmbng stars at tube and tran statons, you wll probably be dong a lot of walkng. Make sure you brng comfortable shoes and plasters for blsters. Publc transport s lkely to be very busy durng the Games, so plan your journey n advance and allow extra tme to get to your destnaton. Asssted ral travel Patents travellng to appontments durng Games tme may wsh to book passenger asssted travel on natonal ral servces wth ther Tran Operatng Companes (TOCs) where applcable. Look after your sexual health Carryng condoms wth you and usng them every tme you have sex wll help protect aganst sexually transmtted nfectons (STIs), ncludng HIV, and help prevent pregnancy. NHS pharmacsts can gve free confdental advce and drect you to the best sexual health servce for you. Accessng the NHS n London People access the NHS n London through a number of routes ncludng va pharmacsts, GPs, dentsts, emergency departments, urgent care centres and other self-referral facltes, such as sexual health clncs. To help people to choose the most approprate and convenent health servces for ther needs durng the London 2012 Games the followng sgnpostng nformaton s beng provded va a range of channels (see rght and overleaf). For health nformaton and advce Many llnesses and njures can be treated wthout the need to see a doctor or nurse. Alternatvely, vstors can contact NHS Drect on NHS London Remember your health nsurance All vstors should have travel nsurance wth approprate health care coverage. Ths wll ensure the cost of any treatment ncurred durng ther stay can be reclamed. Are you from a European Economc Area Member State or Swtzerland? Vstors from a European Economc Area Member State or Swtzerland may be enttled to free healthcare for an llness or njury that becomes mmedately and medcally necessary to treat durng ther stay and cannot wat untl they return home. They wll need to show a vald European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and proof of ther dentty when accessng treatment. Are you a resdent of a country wth a recprocal healthcare agreement wth the UK? Resdents of countres wth whch the UK has a recprocal healthcare agreement may be enttled to free healthcare f the need for treatment arses durng ther vst. At pharmaces and most supermarkets, people can buy many medcnes and healthcare products, such as paracetamol, buprofen, antacds, emergency contracepton, plasters, bandages and sunscreen. Pharmacsts can also drect people to the rght health servce f they requre treatment.

7 For treatment for an llness or njury The NHS provdes a range of walk-n servces such as urgent care centres, walk-n centres and mnor njures unts. Walk-n servces offer convenent access to a range of treatments. Many centres are open 365 days a year and outsde normal offce hours. Vstors and resdents can see a health professonal wthout an appontment for treatment for a mnor llness or njury that requres mmedate attenton. Busness as usual chargng and enttlements for overseas vstors apply. Walk-n centres Walk-n centres provde fast access to health advce, emergency contracepton and treatment for mnor alments and nfectons. Mnor njures unts Mnor njures unts cater for the urgent treatment of such thngs as cuts, sprans or mnor burns. Urgent care centres Some hosptals have urgent care centres that provde treatment for a range of mnor llnesses and mnor njures whch need mmedate attenton. Sexual health servces Vstors or resdents that are worred about unplanned pregnancy or sexually transmtted nfectons (STIs), ncludng HIV, should be drected to NHS pharmacsts who wll gve free confdental advce and drect them to the best sexual health servce to meet ther needs. Informaton on all London/natonal sexual health, HIV and contraceptve servces are avalable on NHS Choces. Pharmacy Pharmacsts can assess and drect people to the most approprate sexual health servce accordng to need. Most pharmaces provde: Advce and sgn-postng to sexual health servces Pregnancy tests Emergency contracepton Condoms Communty Contraceptve Servces Communty Contraceptve Servces or CASH servces can be both walk n (no appontment needed) and booked appontment systems. Clncs provde all methods of contracepton ncludng: Emergency Contracepton Condoms Long actng reversble contracepton or LARC (such as the mplant) Some clncs provde STI testng and treatment Gentournary Medcne (GUM) Communty sexual and reproductve health servce or Gento-urnary Medcne (GUM) servces n the UK are free, open access and confdental to all who use them. Symptomatc patents should be drected to a GUM clnc. Referral s not necessary (anyone can self-refer). People contactng a servce should be offered an appontment wthn 48 hours of frst contact. Indvduals wth urgent problems, ether real or perceved, should expect to receve approprate advce and or management on the same day or at the next clnc sesson wthn the local sexual health network. STI care management (testng and treatng STIs, some provde dedcated servces e.g. young people s servces, gay men clncs Emergency contracepton Post Exposure Prophylaxs for Sexual Exposure (PEPSE) Condoms Pregnancy tests Advce and partner notfcaton Gay men and men who have sex wth men In lne wth Brtsh Assocaton of Sexual Health and HIV gudelnes, all gay men or men who have sex wth men (MSM) seekng a sexual health servce should be referred drectly to GUM. 8 Stay healthy durng London 2012 Advce for patents and publc If you become unwell or are njured ths summer Choose the rght NHS Servce We want everyone who comes to the London 2012 Olympc and Paralympc Games to have a happy, safe and healthy experence. Ths leaflet provdes nformaton about the health servces avalable whle you are here and tps on stayng well durng your vst. NHS Choces For health nformaton and advce Pharmaces For face to face health advce, treatment and medcaton PEPSE Post Exposure Prophylaxs (for Sexual Exposure) Anyone who has been exposed to HIV (e.g. condom falure etc.) should seek advce mmedately PEPSE may be admnstered after assessment of level of rsk. PEPSE should be admnstered as soon as possble and s more effectve wthn 72 hours of exposure. Sexual Assault People who have been sexually assaulted or raped can contact the polce or one of the London Haven s. The Havens are specalst centres n London for people who have been raped or sexually assaulted. The servce provdes emotonal support by traned staff for those who experence sexual volence. The Havens wll provde gudance around evdence and forenscs as well as follow up support and advce. Those who do not wsh to report an assault to the polce can stll access the servce. People need to call ahead to make an appontment at the Havens before attendng. Dental Servces Most General Dental Practtoners wll see people n pan. Vstors and resdents can contact a convenent dental practce and ask for an appontment. 9 Advce for staff It s mportant that NHS staff wear ther dentty badges whlst workng durng the Games and also that they carry them whlst travellng to work as addtonal securty measures wll be n place n and around Games venues and along road race routes. There wll also be addtonal polce offcers n the captal. Road race stewards have been brefed about the need to let NHS staff cross some restrcted areas to access patents and healthcare organsatons, should they need to do so. Staff wll only be permtted to so f they show a vald dentty badge. Transport at Games-tme Usng publc transport It s expected that there wll be congeston and delays on the road, tube and ral networks n some parts of London durng the Olympc and Paralympc Games. The extent of ths s lkely to vary at dfferent locatons and dfferent tmes. It could also have a knock on effect on other areas. Many parts of the Underground and DLR wll be under pressure, ncludng statons and lnes that are not near venues that wll be mportant nterchanges and routes for spectators travellng to and from events. As a man route to the Olympc Park, the Jublee Lne wll be sgnfcantly buser than usual throughout the Games. The Central Lne wll also be extremely busy. Durng the Games: the publc transport network wll be busy, so gve yourself plenty of tme to reach your destnaton. For short dstances, t may be faster and more pleasant to walk or cycle and there wll be extra maps and sgnage to help follow the advce of maps, sgns and staff who are there to make your journey as quck as possble f you are travellng by bus, check your journey wth journeyplanner for Natonal Ral servces, check the tmes of trans wth operators before travellng. To manage the large number of addtonal passengers, transport operatons wll run dfferently durng the Games: Tube and DLR On days, servces wll start approxmately mnutes earler Trans wll run up to 90 mnutes later than normal on all days, ncludng days. Last trans from central London wll leave around 01:30 (see tmetable). The Tube wll operate addtonal evenng servces on the Jublee, Central and Dstrct lnes. DLR wll operate peak servces all day throughout the Olympc and Paralympc Games. Natonal Ral servces Natonal Ral servces from London wll operate later than normal. Last trans for both suburban and nter-cty destnatons wll leave London termn typcally between 00:00 and 01:00 Bus servces Bus servces n London are lkely to be subject to alteratons. In addton, when the road events take place ths wll mpact on those bus servces that operate along or close to the route. TfL communcatons TfL wll be producng daly communcatons relatng to the transport network that wll be emaled out to the NHS n London. Ths wll consst of: 1) A mornng and evenng bulletn (summary of what s happenng that day (5am) and what s happenng the next day (3pm)) 2) Any unscheduled communcatons (for example the Jublee lne has gone down and an event has been delayed by 30 mnutes) Clusters and Trusts wll be n drect recept of ths nformaton. However, for the unwell patent who s vstng from abroad durng the Games, the dfferental dagnoss wll need to nclude dseases/ condtons not routnely seen n the UK, as well as those that are common n the UK. Antbotc resstance patterns may also be dfferent for nfectons contracted abroad. Early advce on dagnoss and treatment should be sought from publc health mcrobologsts as requred. Some Games Famly members have been accredted by LOCOG to take part n, work on, or attend the Games. Some are also enttled to acute and emergency care on the NHS n accordance wth one of the commtments made when the UK t bd to host the Games n London. The bd commtment only apples to hosptals, the usual NHS charges for and enttlements to healthcare for people from overseas apply to healthcare servces provded n any other settng. LOCOG medcal has developed a comprehensve healthcare programme to meet the needs of Games Famly members and spectators. Ths ncludes provdng health care servces n all Games venues and offcal hotels through teams of qualfed staff at facltes equpped and desgned to provde mmedate and necessary care. It s expected that LOCOG medcal wll provde the vast majorty of care for Games Famly members.
