The 2011 squad can become the first team to post back to back nine-win seasons in school history. Only six times previously have Bulldog teams posted eight or more wins in consecutive years. MISSISSIPPI STATE REMAINS RANKED IN TOP 25 State will enters Thursday night ranked 25th in both the AP and the coaches poll. Mississippi State s game against LSU will be the ninth straight game the Bulldogs have played ranked in the AP Top-25 Poll, marking the longest such streak since the 1999 Bulldogs played its final nine games of the season ranked in the poll. MULLEN COULD POST ONE OF BEST THREE-YEAR MARKS Head coach Dan Mullen has led his Mississippi State teams to 15 victories in his young career. The school record for victories in the first three years of a coach s tenure is 26, set by Allyn McKeen from Ralph Sasse ( ) and Emory Bellard ( ) are the only two other coaches to reach 20 wins in their first three seasons. TIGERS AND TIGERS AND TIGERS, OH MY For the second consecutive season, Mississippi State opens the season with three consecutive games against teams with Tiger mascots. In his first three years Mullen s teams have opened each season with a Tiger opponents (Jackson State in 2009, Memphis in 2010, 2011). DOGS AGAIN FACE ONE OF NATION S TOP SCHEDULES Last season Mississippi State played five teams ranked at the time of the game and four teams that finished among the nation s top 12. This year, State faces five teams ranked in this week s polls, including three of the nation s top 11 ranked teams this week. LOSSES COME AGAINST QUALITY OPPONENTS Mississippi State had four losses on the 2010 season, and each came to a team ranked in the top 12 of all major polls. The four teams finished with a combined record of 45-8 (with six of the eight losses coming against each other). State hasn t lost to an unranked team since Dan Mullen s first season of 2009, and all three losses to unranked squads that season were to opponents receiving votes in the week the game was played. STATE LOOKS TO BREAK LSU STREAK The Bulldogs will look snap an 11-game LSU winning streak in the series. The Tigers have won 18 of the last 19 in the series dating back to a pair of Mississippi State victories in 1990 and State has beaten LSU only three times since The Bulldogs and Tigers have played 104 times, but the teams have only met 19 times in Starkville. The two teams did not meet on the Mississippi State campus from 1923 until DOGS UNBEATEN ON SEPTEMBER 15 Mississippi State has played three football games on September 15th in its history, and posted a record. Most recently, the Dogs beat Auburn on 9/15/07. OFFENSE CONTINUES RECORD BREAKING PACE Mississippi State has gotten off to a blistering offensive start in the first two games of the season. The Bulldogs have gained 1,176 yards, the most ever over a two-game span in school history. TURNOVER MARGIN HELPS TELL STORY OF 2010 SEASON; TREND APPEARING AGAIN IN 2011 The most telling stat for Mississippi State last season was its turnover margin. The Bulldogs were plus-11 in turnovers in their seven wins, and minus-4 in four losses. State turned the ball over just nine times in nine wins and 12 times in four losses. Though the first two weeks of the 2011 season, State was +2 in its win over Memphis and even in the loss at Auburn. OFFENSE LOOKS TO CONTINUE IMPRESSIVE STREAKS The Mississippi State offense has scored at least 30 points in each of its last five games, the longest 30-plus point streak in school history. Under head coach Dan Mullen, State has scored 30 or more points 12 times in 27 games. The Dogs had only reached the 30-point mark 21 times in the previous 94 games. DOGS CONTINUE TO EXCEL IN GROUND GAME In his 27 games as head coach at Mississippi State, Dan Mullen s team has eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark in all but one contest. State rushed for 100+ in each game last season, and eclipsed the 300-yard each of the first two games this year. The Bulldogs also scored seven rushing touchdowns in two weeks, marking 24 times in 27 games the offense has scored at least one touchdown on the ground. State has rushed for 300 yards in back-to-back contests and gone over 200 yards in five straight and 10 of the last 11 games. RUNNING BACK BALLARD CONTINUES TO IMPRESS... Senior running back Vick Ballard led the Bulldog rushing attack with 968 yards and a school record 19 rushing touchdowns last season. In Week 1 at Memphis, Ballard was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for a career-high 166 yards and three scores on just 10 carries. In just 14 career games (missed one game last season) he has scored 23 touchdowns (fifth all time at MSU) and had five three-touchdown games. Ballard has rushed for 301 yards and four touchdowns over the first two weeks of the season, and currently is ranked third in the nation with a yards per game average. His 9.71 yard-per-carry average is tops among any player in the top 15 of rushing yards nationally.... AS DOES QUARTERBACK RELF Senior quarterback Chris Relf continued an astonishing stretch of great play in the first two weeks of the season. Over his last five games Relf has completed 84-of-125 passes (67 percent) for 1,190 yards with nine touchdowns and three interceptions. His quarterback rating over those four games is whopping During the five-game stretch, he s also rushed for 356 yards on 98 carries, going over the 100-yard mark twice. Relf has posted four career games of 100 yards or more, the third most among quarterbacks at Mississippi State (Don Smith 9, John Bond 5). The Mississippi State defense ranks first in the Southeastern Conference and 17th nationally with an average of 8.5 tackles for loss per game. The Bulldogs have also intercepted a pair of passes (returning one for a score) and recovered two fumbles. QB COULD SET SCHOOL RECORDS THIS SEASON Relf has a chance to rewrite the Mississippi State career passing record book. He already ranks among the top ten in completion percentage, interception percentage, yards per attempt, passing efficiency and touchdown passes. The Montgomery, Ala., native needs 36 completions and 499 yards to enter the school s top 10 in those categories. With 1,357 career rushing yards, Relf is only the school s sixth quarterback to reach the 1,000 yard mark and needs only 96 yards to enter the school s top 20 all-time. O-LINE PAVING WAY EVEN WITH REPLACEMENTS In the first two games of the season, the Mississippi State starting five along the offensive front included four players with extensive playing time and a senior left tackle. During the Auburn game, a pair of injuries forced redshirt freshmen to step in and fill holes at left tackle and center. Despite the replacements, State s offense has gained 642 rushing yards and allowed only 12 tackles for loss on 101 carries and one sack on 65 passing plays. FAMILIAR FACES RETURN ON DEFENSE Even with the departure of three senior linebackers and a defensive end, the Bulldog defensive lineup entered the season with 12 different players that have earned at least on career start. Defensive linemen Sean Ferguson, Fletcher Cox and Josh Boyd have combined for 52 career starts. Defensive backs Charles Mitchell, Nickoe Whitley, Wade Bonner, Johnthan Banks and Corey Broomfield have earned 83 starting nods. DEFENSE WAS BEST WITH BACKS AGAINST THE WALL One of the main reasons the Bulldogs were able to keep opponents from scoring touchdowns in 2010 was its remarkable redzone defense. State allowed foes to reach the 20 yardline 40 times this season, with opponents only scoring touchdowns 17 times (42.5 percent). This season, opponents are 3-for-4 on redzone touchdown scoring opportunities. BROOMFIELD HAS INSTINCT FOR INTERCEPTIONS... Junior cornerback Corey Broomfield has a knack for picking off passes and the Palm Bay, Fla., native intercepted his ninth career pass in last year s regular season finale, moving him into the school s all-time top 10 in the category. He is also tied for the national lead among active players with three career pick-sixes and the total has tied the Mississippi State school record. It s also tied for second most in the history of the Southeastern Conference....AND BANKS HAS NOSE FOR BIG PLAYS AS WELL The other half of the cornerback tandem, junior Johnthan Banks, has also shown an ability to make huge plays. The Maben, Miss., native has collected eight interceptions during his career at both safety and corner. Banks returned his third career interception for touchdown against Auburn, and he s now tied with Broomfield (and Tennessee s Prentiss Waggner) for the national lead among active players with three pick sixes. SAULSBERRY STARTING AT FOURTH SPOT Senior offensive lineman Quentin Saulsberry drew the starting duty at center in the Bulldogs first two games, marking the fourth spot he s earned a starting nod at in his four years in Starkville. He began his career as the Dogs right tackle for 12 games in In 2009 he moved over to left guard and earned 12 starts. Last season, he started 11 times at right guard and twice at center. BUMPHIS CLIMBING SCHOOL S TOP 10 With a 44-yard touchdown reception at Memphis, wide receiver Chad Bumphis moved into a tied for eighth on Mississippi State s career touchdown catches list with 10. Bumphis needs only two catches and 305 receiving yards to enter the school s top 10 in those categories. CAM LAWRENCE HAS HUGE DAY AT AUBURN Junior linebacker Cam Lawrence posted a career-best 14 tackles with 3.5 tackles for loss, a sack and forced fumble at Auburn. He entered the game with only two tackles for loss and one sack in his entire career. The 14 total tackles more than doubled his previous career best of six last year against Kentucky. HEAVENS RETURNS TO ENDZONE AGAINST AUBURN Junior wideout Brandon Heavens had a pair of touchdowns in the season opener against Memphis in 2010, but hadn t caught a touchdown in 13 games prior to a 15-yard grab on the Plains last weekend. Heavens finished the game with three catches for 46 yards. SWEDENBURG HAS BEEN SOLID Sophomore punter Baker Swedenburg had a solid outing in his first collegiate game. He hit five punts for an average of 41.4 yards with four pinning Memphis inside its own 20 yardline. In week 2 at Auburn, Swedenburg punted six times with two inside the 20 and permitting only one return for nine yards. BURE MAKING WAVES ON SPECIAL TEAMS Senior cornerback Marvin Bure might have found his niche on special teams. The speedy defensive back compiled five tackles in the opener at Memphis and one at Auburn - all six have come in his role on kickoff coverage. NAMES ABOUND ON PRESEASON WATCH LISTS Mississippi State players appeared on a slew of preseason watch lists, recognizing both players in the Southeastern Conference and across the nation. Senior Vick Ballard was named to the Maxwell and Doak Walker Award watch lists; Fletcher Cox and Charles Mitchell were named to the Nagurski Award list; Chris Relf earned recognition from the Davey O Brien Award and the Manning Award; Quentin Saulsberry was named to the Lombardi Trophy list. See page 4 for a list of all awards winners this season. BALLARD, MITCHELL CHOSEN AS CAPTAINS MSU announced permanent team captains for the 2011 team prior to the first game of the year. By a vote of their teammates, Vick Ballard and Charles Mitchell earned the honor. FERGUSON, MITCHELL AND SAULSBERRY HAVE PLAYED EVERY GAME A trio of players have played in every game over the past three years. Defensive lineman Sean Ferguson, Saulsberry and Mitchell have each played in all 39 games, with Saulsberry the only one to earn a start in each one. ATTENDANCE: 92,538. SEPTEMBER 18, 2010 TIGER STADIUM BATON ROUGE, LA. ESPNU GAME RECAP BATON ROUGE, La. - For the first two quarters, Mississippi State s stifling defense kept LSU s big-play offense out of the end zone. But in the third frame, the Tigers finally found their rhythm and maintained it throughout the second half en route to posting a 29-7 victory. With the win, the raucous crowd of 92,538 at Tiger Stadium saw No. 12 LSU extend its winning streak to 11-consecutive games against the Bulldogs, who fell to 1-2 on the year and 0-2 in SEC play. Despite the final margin of victory, the Tigers led just 12-0 at the break behind four field goals by Josh Jasper covering 44, 32, 51 and 37 yards. The Bulldogs, though, wouldn t be deterred heading into intermission. Instead, they came out of the locker room to start the second half and orchestrated a 13 play, 81-yard drive that was capped by 1-yard plunge up the middle by Vick Ballard, closing the gap to Five plays into that drive, though, starting quarterback Chris Relf left the game for good with an injury. Freshman Tyler Russell replaced him and completed both of his passes for 36 yards in leading MSU to its only score, while running twice for 9 yards. However, the momentum was short-lived. From that point, the Tigers, who haven t lost to MSU in Baton Rouge since 1991, answered with back-to-back touchdowns to extend their lead to 26-7 before Jasper added his school-record fifth field goal in the fourth quarter for the game s final points. The Tigers offensive rhythm, coupled with an LSU defense that forced five turnovers, was just too much for Mississippi State to overcome. In addition to forcing those miscues, which now totals nine the past two seasons combined, LSU (3-0, 2-0) held the Bulldogs to just 268 yards of total offense, with 115 coming through the air and 153 on the ground. Relf, who was 5-of-8 passing for 34 yards and two interceptions before his early exit, paced MSU on the ground with 46 yards, while Robert Elliott totaled 40. In relief action, Russell threw for 81 yards while completing 5 of his 10 passes. He was also picked off three times. But just as stingy was MSU s defense. The Tigers had just 15 first downs, two fewer than Mississippi State, and was held to only 261 yards. Only 96 of those yards came through the air, as quarterback Jordan Jefferson was 10 of 18 on the night. He also rushed for another 41 yards and a score, while Stevan Ridley led all rushers with 76 yards STATISTICAL COMPARISON Mississippi State vs. LSU Mississippi State LSU Overall Record Conference Record Points Scored Points Allowed Total Offense Rushing Yards Passing Yards Yards Allowed Rushing Yards Allowed Passing Yards Allowed INDIVIDUAL COMPARISON Mississippi State vs. LSU Mississippi State LSU Rushing Yards-per-Game Vick Ballard Michael Ford Chris Relf Spencer Ware Passing Yards-per-Game Chris Relf Jarrett Lee Tyler Russell Zach Mettenberger Receiving Yards-per-Game Jameon Lewis Rueben Randle Vick Ballard Deangelo Peterson Total Tackles Cameron Lawrence Tyrann Mathieu Charles Mitchell Brandon Taylor Interceptions Johnthan Banks Michael Brockers Nickoe Whitley Tharold Simon

5 DAN MULLEN HEAD COACH THIRD SEASON In just over two full seasons, Dan Mullen has revitalized and reenergized the Mississippi State fan base. From the moment of his introduction on December 10, 2008 as the 32nd head coach in school history, supporters have turned out in record numbers and capacity crowds. Mississippi State fans have sold out a school-record 10 consecutive home games, including all seven at Davis Wade Stadium last fall. Each of the last two years have seen the school s attendance record broken. In fact, 12 of the school s top 20 crowds have occurred in the last two years. Mullen was widely regarded as one of the top young minds in college football when he arrived at Mississippi State, and he brought not only an impressive offensive resume and a list of NFL-developed quarterbacks but also an energy and passion for the college game. Improvement wasn t limited to fan enthusiasm, as Mullen ignited the Bulldogs to a nine-win season in just his second year. State won six games in a row in the middle of the season, and finished among the top 10 in school history in the following categories - passing yardage, completion percentage, passing touchdowns, rushing attempts, rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, total plays, total offensive yards, per-game offense and first downs. The defense also amassed the 10th highest sack total in school annals. The 2010 Bulldogs closed out the season with nine victories including posting the largest margin of victory in a bowl game in school history. The resounding Gator Bowl win over Michigan capped a truly remarkable year. In 2009, despite facing the nation s toughest schedule. State s rushing attack, led by first-team all-southeastern Conference selection Anthony Dixon, finished ninth nationally with a rushing yard average per game. State averaged yards of total offense per game, the eighth highest total in school history and the most since Mullen s first season concluded with a rousing victory over MSU s in-state rival, which brought the Golden Egg back to Starkville. He became the only the third Mississippi State coach to win his Egg Bowl debut since 1939, joining Allyn McKeen and Jackie Sherrill. The Bulldogs posted a 5-7 overall record in 2009, including three road victories. During the previous four seasons as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Florida, Mullen molded a Heisman Trophy, Davey O Brien and Maxwell Award winning quarterback, along with a Rimington Trophy finalist and a Biletnikoff Award semifinalist. In 2008 alone, Mullen s offensive attack ranked third nationally in scoring averaging better than 45 points per game as the Gators scored at least 30 points in 12 of 13 games. The 587 points scored eclipsed the previous University of Florida mark, set in Florida rushed for a new-school record 41 touchdowns that season and UF s 80 rushing touchdowns over the two seasons ranked second nationally Overall, Florida s rushing yardage of 2,987 this year ranks ninth nationally and is the third-highest total in school history. Seven offensive players were recognized as All-Southeastern Conference selections following the season in which Florida claimed its second SEC Championship and a chance to play for its second national championship in three seasons. The Gator offense ranked first in the SEC in scoring offense and total offense for a second-straight season in 2008, averaging 45.2 points and yards per game. Under Mullen s tutelage in 2007, UF averaged 42.5 points and yards. In 2007, Mullen directed the Gator offense to the third-highest point total ever by a UF unit and the top single-season marks for rushing touchdowns and third-down conversion percentage. Florida s offense scored 75 touchdowns during the season most in the SEC. Mullen orchestrated a UF attack that was the only one in the nation to have rushed for a touchdown and passed for a touchdown in every game during the season. He also helped UF score on 83 of 152 drives in 2007 for a league-best 54.6 percent, marking the best number since the stat was tracked by the SEC in Florida also averaged 7.0 yards per play last year, the fourth-best total in the nation and the Gators averaged 5.3 yards per rush, the second-best number in school history. In 2007, he helped coach sophomore quarterback Tim Tebow into a Heisman Trophy, Maxwell and Davey O Brien award winner, 78th Sullivan Award winner and AP first-team All- American among other honors. He also tutored six offensive players to the All-SEC team: Tebow, Percy Harvin, Cornelius Ingram, Brandon James, Jim Tartt and Drew Miller Mississippi State Football Notes Game 3 vs. LSU Mullen played an integral role in Florida s 2006 national championship, overseeing an offense that averaged 29.7 points and yards per game. In the BCS National Championship Game, he engineered an attack that produced 41 points against a top-ranked Ohio State squad that was limiting opponents to less than 11 points per game on the year. Under Mullen s tutelage, quarterback Chris Leak opened the contest by going 9-for- 9 for 99 yards and a touchdown en route to earning Offensive MVP honors. The 2006 Gator offense posted 76 plays of 20 yards or more, 19 of which went for touchdowns. Florida passed for 29 touchdowns in 2006, while Leak ranked among the national leaders with 23 scoring tosses. Tebow matched UF s single-season record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with eight scores, and his 5.3 average yards per carry were second nationally among signal callers. Six different players averaged at least 5.0 yards per carry. In 2005, Chad Jackson played his way to Biletnikoff Award semifinalist status after matching the UF single-season record with 88 receptions, a figure that led the SEC and finished sixth nationally. Center Mike Degory was also named a finalist for the Rimington Trophy, given annually to the nation s top center, during that campaign. Both earned first-team All-SEC honors under Mullen s tutelage. Mullen went to Florida from Utah with head coach Urban Meyer, with whom he had spent 10 seasons. While the quarterbacks coach at Utah, Mullen developed Alex Smith the first overall selection in the 2005 NFL Draft from a pocket passer into an efficient executor of the spread, making him one of the most versatile threats in college football. Smith took over the starting job three games into Mullen s tenure, passing for 2,247 yards and running for 452 to finish second in the Mountain West in total offense in The 2004 campaign saw Smith earn National Player of the Year honors from The Sporting News and Sports Illustrated, while also becoming Utah s first-ever Heisman Trophy finalist and garnering final consideration for the Davey O Brien and Walter Camp National Player of the Year Awards. Smith passed for 2,952 yards and 32 touchdowns and ran for 631 yards and 10 scores on the year, ranking second in the nation with a efficiency rating and leading the Utes to a perfect 12-0 season and a Fiesta Bowl championship. As a team, Utah finished the 2004 season third in the nation in scoring offense (45.3) and total offense (499.8). Prior to his stint at Utah, Mullen served as quarterbacks coach at Bowling Green for two seasons, putting up 6,627 yards of total offense and scoring 81 touchdowns during that span. In 2002, quarterback Josh Harris threw for 2,425 yards, ran for 737 yards and completed the campaign as the nation s third-leading scorer. Mullen spent the two years before his Bowling Green stint as a graduate assistant at Notre Dame and assisted with Syracuse s 1998 BIG EAST championship and Orange Bowl run. A two-year starter at tight end for Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa., Mullen earned first-team All-Centennial Conference honors as a senior. He is married to the former Megan West, and the couple has a two-year-old son, Canon.
