SINCE 1956 Coach Rec. Pct. 1. Dan Mullen (2009-pres.) Jackie Sherrill ( ) Emory Bellard ( ) Paul Davis ( ) Wade Walker ( ) Dan Mullen has spearheaded Mississippi State to unprecedented sustained success and reenergized the Bulldog fan base in the process. The MSU faithful have gone on to watch the head coach lead the Maroon and White to four straight bowl games for the first time in now the 115th year of the program. Just six years into his tenure, Mullen (45-29,.608) owns the highest winning percentage as a coach at State since the late Allyn McKeen from (.764), and he is third in school history for wins by a MSU head coach (45). In 2014, Mullen has guided the Bulldogs to three straight wins over top-10 teams, a first in college football since 1983 Auburn. He s led the program to its first ever No. 1 ranking. Mullen became the MSU all-time leader in bowl game victories with three when the Bulldogs trounced Rice 44-7 in the 2013 AutoZone Liberty Bowl. On top of that, Mullen has dominated the Egg Bowl rivalry (4-1), owning the second-highest winning percentage (.800) against Ole Miss. Mullen (63 games) was the quickest Bulldog coach to 35 career wins since Allyn McKeen in He ranks third all-time in MSU winning percentage among coaches who have coached more than four seasons. From the moment of his introduction on Dec. 10, 2008, as the 32nd head coach in school history, supporters have turned out in record numbers and capacity crowds to support the Bulldogs. Mullen was widely regarded as one of the top young minds in college football when he arrived at Mississippi State, and he brought not only an impressive offensive resume and a list of NFL-developed quarterbacks, but also an energy and passion for the college game. A total of 13 players have been selected in the NFL Draft during Mullen s MSU tenure. Of those 13, seven were considered three-stars by recruiting services in high school. All seven of those are still in the NFL. Under Mullen s guidance, the 2013 MSU offense went down as one of the most prolific in school history. The Bulldogs shattered school records for total yards (5,647), yards per game (434.4), passing yards (3,178), first MULLEN S YEAR-BY-YEAR RECORD downs (305), completions (253), passing yards per game (244.5) and completion percentage (59.0). Mullen also helped develop Dak Prescott into one of the top signal callers in school history as Prescott broke the school record for rushing yards by a quarterback (829) and registered the third-highest total offense mark in school history (2,769). As a team, MSU showed constant improvement and went on an inspiring three-game winning streak to close the 2013 season despite a rash of injuries. After a hard-fought game against No. 1 Alabama on Nov. 16, the Bulldogs bounced back a week later with their first victory ever at Arkansas. Then on a cold Thanksgiving night, Mullen continued his dominance of the Egg Bowl rivalry as MSU, on a gutsy final drive engineered by an injured Prescott, claimed its fourth Egg Bowl win in five seasons with a overtime triumph. The Bulldogs closed the year racking up a bowl school-record 533 yards to defeat Rice 44-7 in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tenn. The 37-point margin of victory was the largest of the 2013 college bowl season as MSU finished the year with a 7-6 record. Off the field, Mullen s players are constant achievers in the classroom and the community donating countless hours to the Starkville area and state of Mississippi. Eighteen Bulldogs were named to the SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll in During Mullen s entire five-year tenure at MSU, 90 players have earned the distinction of SEC Academic Honor Roll recipient. The 42-year-old has helped the program improve its NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) every year in his tenure, including most recently the SEC s fourth-best football APR with a score of 974. MSU is the only SEC football program to improve its NCAA APR score every year since the formula s inception. The Mullen s created the Mullen Family 36 Foundation, raising more than $250,000 for charity in the last two years. The foundation has impacted the lives of 36 different children s charities throughout the state of Mississippi. THE LAST MEETING Vanderbilt 3 MSU 15 Sept. 19, 2009 Vanderbilt Stadium Nashville, Tenn. 31,840 Great defense, an excellent night from place-kicker Sean Brauchle, and a late touchdown run by Tyson Lee to solidify things led Mississippi State to a 15-3 victory on the road at Vanderbilt Saturday night. Mississippi State s defense limited the Commodores to just 157 yards of total offense in Saturday s contest, much of that allowed in the fourth quarter when VU still had hopes of of pulling out a late win. Brauchle had a stellar night - just the third game of his Bulldog career - nailing field goals of 44, 27 and 49 yards at key times during the game to give the Bulldogs a 9-3 edge. A 40-yard breakout run by senior Anthony Dixon led to a 22-yard TD scamper by Lee, who faked to Dixon before taking the ball in for the score, and MSU led Dixon was the offensive star of the game from scrimmage, rushing for 123 yards on 21 carries. Teammate Christian Ducre added 62 yards on the ground for MSU. State amassed 341 yards of total offense against a tough Vanderbilt defense. Four of Wilson s five touchdowns this season have come on third down, which leads the nation. He has made nine catches on third down this season, eight of which have gone for first downs. Nicknamed Bear by his high school coach, Wilson did not start playing football until his senior year of high school. Wilson was the 2013 Mr. Basketball in the state of Alabama and played the season on the hardwood with the Bulldogs. He has since chosen to focus strictly on football. For the season, Wilson has made 30 catches for 458 yards and six touchdowns. In SEC only games, Wilson is averaging 62.3 yards receiving, which ranks sixth in the league. In his home state return to Alabama, Wilson hauled in a career-high and game-high eight passes to go along with a career-high-tying 91 yards on Nov. 15. He also had 91 yards receiving at LSU on Sept. 20. ELITE REDZONE DEFENSE MSU leads the nation in redzone defense. Opponents have made 36 trips and scored 22 times (.611) against the Bulldogs. In 36 trips, opponents have managed only 13 touchdowns (.361). Ranked teams have made 11 trips to the redzone against MSU and managed five touchdowns (.455). The Bulldogs are the only SEC team in the 60 percentile of redzone defense. The next closest is Auburn at 71.4 percent (42 attempts, 30 scores). The next closest Power 5 Conference team is Louisville at 69.2 percent (26 attempts, 18 scores). PRESTON SMITH HAVING ALL-AMERICAN YEAR Senior Preston Smith has been a dominant force on the defensive line this season. Smith ranks third in the SEC in tackles for loss (12.5 total, 1.25 per game) and fourth in the league in sacks (8.0 total, 0.80 per game). Smith also has two interceptions to his credit (one returned for a touchdown against UAB), three pass breakups, a team-high 15 quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles and two blocked kicks. Smith leads the SEC in blocked kicks -- both on field goals -- and ranks fifth nationally. He blocked a 30-yard field goal attempt in the third quarter of the season-opener against Southern Miss that was returned for a 68-yard touchdown by Jay Hughes. Smith also blocked a field goal at South Alabama in week three. Smith became the first player in SEC history to be named SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week for three-straight weeks (Weeks 1, 2, 3). MSU s SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week 2005 Willie Evans (Sept. 17) 2008 Jessie Bowman (Sept. 15) 2009 Pernell McPhee (Sept. 21, Nov. 28) 2011 Fletcher Cox (Oct. 10, Oct. 17, Oct. 31, Nov. 28) 2014 Preston Smith (Sept. 1, Sept. 8, Sept. 15) SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week In Two-Plus Consecutive Weeks 2014 Preston Smith (Sept. 1, 8 and 15) 2013 Michael Sam*, Missouri (Sept. 28 and Oct. 5) 2011 Fletcher Cox*^, Mississippi State* (Oct. 8 and 15) 2010 Drake Nevis*, LSU (Sept. 11 and 18) Nick Fairley*^, Auburn (Oct. 16 and 23) 2006 Glenn Dorsey*^, LSU (Sept. 11 and 18) * Earned All-America honors at the end of the season. ^ Eventual first-round pick in NFL Draft TRIFECTA: DAK CAN THROW, RUN AND CATCH For the third time in his career, Dak Prescott caught a touchdown pass from WR Jameon Lewis as the two connected 24-yard touchdown with 4:27 remaining in the second quarter of the South Alabama game on Sept. 13. Prescott lateraled to Lewis, who fired back to Prescott on the near side of the field. All three of Prescott s career receiving TDs have come from Lewis passes. It was also the second time in Prescott s career that he has run, thrown and caught a touchdown pass in the same game. He did it against Troy last season on Sept. 21. He caught a 17-yard TD pass from Lewis in last year s Kentucky game on Oct. 24 as well but did not run for a score in that contest. Prescott is the only quarterback in FBS this season to rush, pass and receive a TD in a single game this season. Only two other QBs have passed and caught a TD in a single game this year: Trevor Siemian of Northwestern vs. Cal on Aug. 30 and Grant Hendrick of Boise State on Sept. 13 at Connecticut.
