State piled up a 38-0 lead at the half and beat Troy on Saturday. Redshirt freshman QB Nick Fitzgerald, filling in for an ill Dak Prescott, accounted for 170 yards of total offense and three touchdowns. Fred Ross returned a punt 77 yards for a TD and caught a 59-yard TD pass. Dan Mullen, the 2014 Maxwell Football National and SEC AP Coach of the Year, became the quickest MSU coach since 1946 to reach 50 wins, doing so in 83 games (Allyn McKeen, Jackie Sherrill). Mullen owns the highest winning percentage at MSU since the College Football Hall of Famer McKeen from (.764, min. 3 seasons). Prior to Mullen s arrival, MSU was MSU leads the all-time series with Louisiana Tech, 8-3. The two teams are meeting for the first time since a MSU overtime victory on Sept. 24, 2011 in Starkville. Dak Prescott, who is up for seven national awards, owns an 18-8 record as a starter and he has shattered 22 school records. For his career, the senior has scored 37 TDs (34 rush, 3 receiving) and been responsible for a school-record 83 TDs (49 passing, 34 rushing). For the season, Dak is 118- of-182 for 1,353 yards with eight touchdowns and no interceptions through the air. He has thrown a school-record 231 straight passes without an interception, a streak that stretches 22 quarters. That streak is currently the longest in the nation and the third-longest in SEC history. Prescott is the only active FBS player with at least 6,000 career passing yards and 2,000 career rushing yards. Jr. LB Richie Brown leads MSU in tackles with 54, which ranks fourth in the SEC and 19th nationally. That s the most by a Bulldog through the first six games of a season since Quinton Culberson totaled 54 tackles in the 2006 season. Brown has four double-digit tackle games this year. Jr. DE A.J. Jefferson is tops on the squad in tackles for loss with 10.5, which ranks fourth in the SEC and ninth nationally. Jefferson has had at least one tackle for loss in seven straight games. His 10.5 TFL are the most through the first six games of a season in MSU history. Jr. WR Fred Ross is tied for the SEC lead in catches with 35. The 2014 National and Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year, Mullen is in his seventh season in Starkville after guiding the Bulldogs into unprecedented territory, including the fastest ascent from unranked to No. 1 in college football history. Seven years into his tenure, Mullen (50-33,.602) owns the highest winning percentage as a State coach since the late Allyn McKeen from (.764), and he is third in school history in victories (50). Prior to Mullen s arrival, the school record for consecutive bowl game appearances was three. Under his guidance, the Bulldogs have been to a schoolrecord five consecutive bowl games, including their first Orange Bowl berth in 73 years in December No coach in school history had ever been a finalist for a national coach of the year honor until Mullen won the Maxwell Football Club s National Coach of the Year award in He also claimed the Associated Press SEC Coach of the Year award that same fall. The 2014 season was arguably the best in school history as Mullen s group won 10 regular season games for the first time and 10 overall for just the third time. The Bulldogs claimed six SEC wins -- the most by MSU since while finishing second in the difficult SEC West. Mullen developed a team that went from unranked to No. 1 quicker than any in college football history (five weeks; Ohio State made the move in six weeks in 1964). The Bulldogs were the nation s No. 1 team for the first time in 80 years of Associated Press polls following wins over No. 6 Texas A&M and No. 2 Auburn during a raucous stretch in Davis Wade Stadium. MSU became the first team since 1983 Auburn to defeat three consecutive top-10 ranked teams. The Bulldogs also became the first squad to hold the No. 1 ranking in the inaugural College Football Playoff poll. MULLEN S YEAR-BY-YEAR RECORD The year was capped with a berth in the Orange Bowl for the first time since Mullen s squad rewrote the MSU record books in 2014, shattering 22 single-season records, including 10 by National Player of the Year finalist Prescott. The Bulldogs led the SEC in total offense for the first time since 1982, putting up a school-record yards per game. State earned its highest Associated Press poll finish since 1940 (No. 11), and it tied its highest finish ever in the USA Today Amway Coaches poll (No. 12). MSU has shattered 68 team or individual single-season and career statistical records under Mullen. The Bulldogs have also produced a first-team All-America selection in five straight years. Linebacker Benardrick McKinney became the latest recipient in 2014 before being selected in the 2015 NFL Draft. Player development has been key in Mullen s six previous seasons. Eighteen MSU players have been chosen in the NFL Draft under Mullen s watch since The five selections in 2015 were the most through the first six rounds of a draft in school history and the most overall in a draft since a schoolrecord five went in Of the five Bulldogs drafted, three earned two stars in high school, while two were three-star recruits before arriving in Starkville. An additional school-record seven players signed NFL free agent contracts following the 2015 NFL Draft. Off the field, Mullen s players are constant achievers in the classroom and the community donating countless hours to the Starkville area and state of Mississippi. Twenty Bulldogs were named to the 2014 SEC Academic Fall Honor Roll. During Mullen s entire six-year tenure at MSU, 110 players have earned the distinction of SEC Honor Roll recipient. Mullen has helped the program improve its NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) nearly every year in his tenure, including the SEC s fourth-best football APR with a score of 974 in During the historic run to No. 1 in 2014, the Bulldogs 2.76 grade point average was the program s highest ever while 20 of the 21 seniors have earned undergraduate degrees. Mississippi State scored first and led at half, but could never put the visiting Bulldogs away. Late in the fourth quarter with the game tied 20-20, Louisiana Tech went on a nine-play, 60-yard drive and had the ball in field goal range with less than four minutes to play. But an interception by Jonathan Banks ended the drive. Neither team was able to generate any offense in the final minutes. In overtime, State won the toss and elected to play defense. Whitley intercepted Isham on the second play from scrimmage. Two plays later, Relf hit Perkins for his first completion since the third quarter, ending a streak of seven straight incomplete passes to end regulation. Perkins finished the game with 47 yards rushing and had two catches for 22 yards, including the game winner. Relf was 14 of 29 for 165 yards guiding the struggling MSU offense. 5 THE NOTEBOOK MORE NOTABLES MSU is receiving votes in the latest Associated Press Top 25 and Amway Coaches polls. MSU has been ranked in 12 out of the last 17 polls and 36 weeks Dan Mullen since Oct The Bulldogs are just outside the Top 25 in the last two polls after being ranked No. 21/22 in week 5. MSU is tied for fifth in the SEC with Arkansas at 1-2. Both of the Bulldogs losses are to teams currently in the top 10 (No. 5, No. 9 Texas A&M). MSU has won 10 of its last 11 home games and is 20-4 at home in the last four seasons. All four losses were to top 15 teams: #16 Texas A&M (2012), #10 LSU, #1 Alabama (2013), none (2014), #14 LSU (2015). State leads the SEC and is fifth nationally in 40+yard plays (12) and is second in the league in 30+yard plays (17). Nine of the 12 are pass plays. The Bulldogs are the least penalized team in the SEC with 23 penalities in their first six games combined. They are fourth nationally in fewest penalties per game (3.8). Since the start of the fourth quarter vs. LSU in week two, Dak Prescott is 76-of-112 (68.9 percent) for 942 yards, six touchdowns and zero interceptions through the air. Under Dan Mullen (since 2009), State is 45-1 when leading at the half and 46-1 when leading at the end of the third quarter. The Bulldogs are 4-0 when leading under both scenarios this season. Dak Prescott went into 2015 with a school-record.605 career completion percentage. In six games this year, it has climbed to.613. The Bulldogs have racked up 17 sacks for 132 yards so far this season, a mark that is third in the SEC and 15th nationally. MSU IS 27-5 IN NON-CONFERENCE GAMES UNDER MULLEN The Bulldogs are 27-5 in all non-sec games under Dan Mullen, including a 24-3 mark in the regular season. The Bulldogs have won 10 consecutive regular season contests against non-conference foes dating back to their Sept. 7, 2013, win against Troy. MSU s last non-conference regular season loss was to No. 13 Oklahoma State on Aug. 31, Under Mullen, the Bulldogs are 17-2 against non-sec foes at home with both losses coming in his first season of 2009 (Georgia Tech, Houston). MANNY FACES FORMER BULLDOGS MSU defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Manny Diaz served in the same capacity at Louisiana Tech last season. Under his direction, Tech led the nation in turnovers gained (40) in They were among the top 25 nationally in nine different statistical categories. Diaz was a part of Tech s C-USA Championship Game appearance and a victory in the Heart of Dallas Bowl over Illinois. HOMECOMING HISTORY MSU owns a all-time record in Homecoming games, including a 5-1 mark under Dan Mullen. The Bulldogs have won five straight Homecoming games, defeating UAB, UT Martin (twice), Middle Tennessee and Bowling Green. MSU has won eight out of its last nine Homecoming games. FRED ROSS TIED FOR SEC LEAD IN RECEPTIONS Jr. WR Fred Ross is tied for the SEC lead in receptions with 35 (also held by Ole Miss Laquon Treadwell). It s the most through the first six games by a State player since Justin Jenkins had 40 catches in Ross had 30 catches all of last season. Ross is just 13 catches shy of already entering the MSU single-season top 10. He s made at least five catches in four of six games this season. The Tyler, Texas, native is the seventh receiver under Dan Mullen to have at least 35 catches in a single season: Jameon Lewis (64 in 2013); Chad Bumphis (58 in 2012, 44 in 2010); De Runnya Wilson (47 in 2014); Chris Smith (47 in 2012, 35 in 2011); Arceto Clark (36 in 2012); Fred Ross (35 in 2015). For his career, Ross has recorded 990 receiving yards - 10 shy of 1,000. Ross added to his explosive play arsenal when he returned a punt 77 yards for a touchdown early in the first quarter against Troy on Oct. 10. Jefferson is off to arguably the best start by a defensive end in school history. Jefferson has registered 10.5 tackles for loss, which is the most through the first six games of a season in MSU history. He is halfway to Willie Evans single-season record of 21 set in Evans had 10 tackles for loss through his first six games. Jefferson has tallied at least one tackle for loss in seven straight games, racking up 12 TFL during that stretch. The streak dates back to the Orange Bowl. Jefferson ranks second in the SEC in tackles for loss and he is tied for ninth nationally. Jefferson, who has played in 32 career games, has recorded 21.5 tackles for loss in his career. That is 0.5 shy of entering the MSU career top 10. WESTIN GRAVES PERFECT SO FAR Sophomore place kicker Westin Graves arrived at MSU in 2014 as a walk-on from Jackson Prep. In 2015, he is one of the nation s most accurate kickers: Graves is 7-of-7 from field goal range on the year and 21-of-21 on PATs. He is the first MSU kicker since at least 1990 to start the season 7-of-7 on field goal attempts. Graves is the first MSU kicker to make four field goals of 40-plus yards in a single season since Devon Bell in Graves is one of nine FBS kickers 7-of-7 or better this season. He and Trent Domingue of LSU (7-of- 7 as well) lead the SEC. Graves is 3-of-3 from beyond 40 yards this year, including a career-long 44 at Auburn. 8 RETURN OF THE DAK Dak Prescott delivered the most prolific season by a quarterback in State history in He owns an 18-8 record as a starter and is a candidate for every National Player of the Year award. Dak finished eighth in the Heisman Trophy vote last season, marking the highest finish by an MSU player in the award s storied history. Dak is seeking to become the second player in SEC history to rush for 40 touchdowns and throw for 40 touchdowns in a career. Another Dan Mullen protege is the record holder (Tim Tebow). Prescott is six rushing TDs shy of achieving the feat. He has rushed for 34 scores and thrown for 49. Prescott is attempting to become only the third FBS quarterback in the last 20 years to rush for 10 touchdowns in three straight seasons. Tebow and former Nevada QB/current San Francisco 49er Colin Kaepernick both did it. Prescott has three rushing scores this season. Market, who ruptured his Achilles in last year s Egg Bowl and fought his way back, played in 41 career games with 20 starts. The Batesville native started four games this season and finished with 147 career tackles. MSU recorded back-to-back wins over Auburn for the first time since Auburn missed on four possessions inside the 10 with new starting quarterback Sean White. On the game s first possession, White completed his first four passes before throwing the ball straight into the hands of cornerback Will Redmond near the goal line.
