MSU recorded back-to-back wins over Auburn for the first time since with a 17-9 win over the No. 25 Tigers last Saturday on the Plains. Dak Prescott threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns and the Bulldogs limited Auburn to zero touchdowns in four redzone chances. Auburn was held to no touchdowns for the first time in the Gus Malzahn era ( , 2013-pres.) Dan Mullen, the 2014 Maxwell Football National and SEC AP Coach of the Year, is one win away from becoming the third coach in MSU history to claim 50 victories (Allyn McKeen, Jackie Sherrill). Mullen owns the highest winning percentage as a State coach since the College Football Hall of Famer McKeen from (.764). Prior to Mullen s arrival, MSU was MSU-Texas A&M series has played to 4-4 tie. The Bulldogs won last year s meeting behind two touchdown passes and three TD runs from Dak Prescott and three INTs by Richie Brown. Dak Prescott, who is up for seven national awards, owns a 17-7 record as a starter and he has shattered 21 school records. For his career, the senior has scored 36 TDs (33 rush, 3 receiving) and been responsible for a school-record 81 TDs (48 passing, 33 rushing). For the season, Dak is 95-of-142 for 1,069 yards with seven touchdowns and no interceptions through the air. He has thrown a school-record 191 straight passes without an interception, a streak that stretches 17 quarters. That streak is currently the longest in the nation and the sixth-longest in SEC history. Manny Diaz unit is allowing only 14.8 points per game, which ranks third in the SEC and 16th nationally. MSU has allowed only one touchdown in the last nine quarters, which dates back to the fourth quarter of the LSU game in week 2. State has not allowed a TD in the last five quarters. MSU has produced at least 420 yards of total offense in 16 out of its last 18 games dating to Jr. LB Richie Brown leads MSU in tackles with 39, which ranks fourth in the SEC and 18th nationally. Brown recorded career highs in tackles (13), sacks (2) and tackles for loss (3) at Auburn. 12 of those were solo. He was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts. Jr. DE A.J. Jefferson is tops on the squad in tackles for loss with 7.5, which ranks third in the SEC and eighth nationally. Jefferson has had at least 1.5 tackles for loss in five straight games. The 2014 National and Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year, Mullen is in his seventh season in Starkville after guiding the Bulldogs into unprecedented territory, including the fastest ascent from unranked to No. 1 in college football history. Seven years into his tenure, Mullen (49-32,.605) owns the highest winning percentage as a State coach since the late Allyn McKeen from (.764), and he is third in school history in victories (49). Prior to Mullen s arrival, the school record for consecutive bowl game appearances was three. Under his guidance, the Bulldogs have been to a schoolrecord five consecutive bowl games, including their first Orange Bowl berth in 73 years in December No coach in school history had ever been a finalist for a national coach of the year honor until Mullen won the Maxwell Football Club s National Coach of the Year award in He also claimed the Associated Press SEC Coach of the Year award that same fall. The 2014 season was arguably the best in school history as Mullen s group won 10 regular season games for the first time and 10 overall for just the third time. The Bulldogs claimed six SEC wins -- the most by MSU since while finishing second in the difficult SEC West. Mullen developed a team that went from unranked to No. 1 quicker than any in college football history (five weeks; Ohio State made the move in six weeks in 1964). The Bulldogs were the nation s No. 1 team for the first time in 80 years of Associated Press polls following wins over No. 6 Texas A&M and No. 2 Auburn during a raucous stretch in Davis Wade Stadium. MSU became the first team since 1983 Auburn to defeat three consecutive top-10 ranked teams. The Bulldogs also became the first squad to hold the No. 1 ranking in the inaugural College Football Playoff poll. MULLEN S YEAR-BY-YEAR RECORD The year was capped with a berth in the Orange Bowl for the first time since Mullen s squad rewrote the MSU record books in 2014, shattering 22 single-season records, including 10 by National Player of the Year finalist Prescott. The Bulldogs led the SEC in total offense for the first time since 1982, putting up a school-record yards per game. State earned its highest Associated Press poll finish since 1940 (No. 11), and it tied its highest finish ever in the USA Today Amway Coaches poll (No. 12). MSU has shattered 68 team or individual single-season and career statistical records under Mullen. The Bulldogs have also produced a first-team All-America selection in five straight years. Linebacker Benardrick McKinney became the latest recipient in 2014 before being selected in the 2015 NFL Draft. Player development has been key in Mullen s six previous seasons. Eighteen MSU players have been chosen in the NFL Draft under Mullen s watch since The five selections in 2015 were the most through the first six rounds of a draft in school history and the most overall in a draft since a schoolrecord five went in Of the five Bulldogs drafted, three earned two stars in high school, while two were three-star recruits before arriving in Starkville. An additional school-record seven players signed NFL free agent contracts following the 2015 NFL Draft. Off the field, Mullen s players are constant achievers in the classroom and the community donating countless hours to the Starkville area and state of Mississippi. Twenty Bulldogs were named to the 2014 SEC Academic Fall Honor Roll. During Mullen s entire six-year tenure at MSU, 110 players have earned the distinction of SEC Honor Roll recipient. THE LAST MEETING #6/7 Texas A&M 31 #12/14 MSU 48 Oct. 4, 2014 Davis Wade Stadium Starkville, Miss. 61,133 Dak Prescott threw two touchdown passes, added three TD runs, and No. 12 Mississippi State overwhelmed No. 6 Texas A&M in Davis Wade Stadium. For the first time in program history, the Bulldogs defeated back-to-back top-10 ranked teams. A&M s Kenny Hill was picked off three times by Richie Brown, who tied the school record for interceptions. Two of the picks led to tochdowns. Prescott s 2-yard bull rush in the third quarter made it A&M blocked the point after kick and then responded with a touchdown by Speedy Noil to cut the lead to with 3:33 left in the third. Just when it looked as if A&M might have some life, State unleashed another Dak attack. Prescott zipped a deep out toward the sideline for Fred Brown, who slipped a tackler and went 51 yards for the score to make it Josh Robinson went over 100 yards rushing and scored two first-quarter touchdowns. Will Redmond had a game-high 10 tackles. 5 THE NOTEBOOK MORE NOTABLES MSU moved back into the national polls this week after the win at No. 25 Auburn. The Bulldogs are 21st in the Associated Press Top 25 and 22nd in the Amway Coaches poll. MSU has been ranked in 12 out of the last 15 polls and 36 weeks Dan Mullen since Oct MSU s lone loss came at the hands of current No. 8-ranked LSU. The Bulldogs missed a potential game-winning 52-yard field goal as time expired. Since the start of the fourth quarter vs. LSU in week two, Dak Prescott is 53-of-72 (73.6 percent) for 658 yards, five touchdowns and 0 interceptions through the air. Dak Prescott went into 2015 with a school-record.605 career completion percentage. In four games this year, it has climbed to.615. State ranks second in the SEC in both 30+yard plays (12) and 40+yard plays (8). MSU leads the SEC in 40+yard passing plays (6). The Bulldogs are the fewest penalized team in the SEC with 17 penalities in their first four games combined. That mark also ranks 15th nationally. MSU is putting up yards per game through the air, which is second in the SEC and 24th nationally. The Bulldogs have racked up 12 sacks for 94 yards in four games this season, a mark that is third in the SEC and 11th nationally. MSU has 30 tackles for loss, which is fourth in the league and 19th nationally. Sixteen different players on the squad have at least 0.5 tackles for loss this season. The Bulldogs tallied 8.0 tackles for loss of 55 yards at No. 25 Auburn last Saturday. PK Westin Graves is a perfect 5-of-5 in field goals this year and 13-of-13 on extra points. Graves drilled a career-long 44-yarder in his last game at Auburn. The three highest total offensive games in MSU history have all occured under Dan Mullen s watch: this season vs. Northwestern State (647), 2011 vs. Memphis (645) and 2014 Orange Bowl vs. Georgia Tech (605). TEXAS BULLDOGS Two State players who will make the trip to College Station this weekend hail from the state of Texas. Both redshirt freshman defensive end Will Coleman and junior wide receiver Fred Ross are from Tyler, Texas, which is 150 miles northeast of College Station. Ross was a Parade All- American and four-star recruit coming out of John Tyler High School. Coleman prepped at Tyler Lee High School. MSU quarterback coach Brian Johnson is a Baytown, Texas, native, while running backs coach Greg Knox is a native of Rosebud. WIDE RECEIVERS MAKING PLAYS A total of 13 different players have caught a pass for MSU this season, a trend that continues under Billy Gonzales. Jr. Fred Ross is third in the SEC with 22 catches. Ross hauled in a career-best nine passes against LSU in game 2. Junior De Runnya Wilson, nicknamed Bear, currently ranks 13th in the SEC in receiving yards per game with Wilson has caught a touchdown in both SEC games this season. Wilson, a Birmingham native, did not start playing football until he was a junior in high school and he has developed into an NFL prospect. He ranks fourth all-time in MSU career receiving touchdowns with 14. He is three scores away from tying for second place. Junior college transfer sophomore Donald Gray hauled in four catches for 140 yards and one touchdown against Northwestern State. Gray s yardage was the most by a Bulldog since Jameon Lewis had 220 in the 2013 Liberty Bowl. Sophomore Gabe Myles, a Starkville native, has hauled in a touchdown catch in back-to-back games. Myles put the Bulldogs on the board with a 37-yard reception from Dak Prescott at Auburn. JEFFERSON LEADING DEFENSIVE LINE Junior defensive end A.J. Jefferson has been one of the most productive defensive linemen in the nation this season. Jefferson has collected at least 1.5 tackles in five straight games dating back to the Orange Bowl. He is third in the SEC and eighth nationally in tackles for loss this season with 7.5. DAK VS. TEXAS A&M Dak Prescott has had great success against Texas A&M during his career, racking up 673 yards of total offense. Prescott accounted for five touchdowns in last year s victory in Starkville. Brown s 12 solo tackles tied for the most by an SEC player in a conference game this year. The Long Beach, Mississippi, native ranks fourth in the league with 39 tackles entering the Texas A&M game. Trailing 10-7 midway through the second quarter, Prescott found true freshman Justin Johnson for a 5-yard TD strike. The Bulldogs held USM short of the goal line on four straight plays from inside the 3-yard line to take a lead into the half. Prescott culminated a nine-play, 95-yard drive escaping and finding Gus Walley for a 4-yard touchdown pass with 12:15 to go in the third quarter. The big play of the drive was Prescott s 49-yard scamper down the sideline to set up the score. Westin Graves booted the first made field goals of his career to tack on the lead and Prescott closed the scoring with a 7-yard TD run with 5:55 remaining. The 34 completions set an MSU team and individual single-game record, breaking Prescott s old mark of 33 set in the 2014 Orange Bowl. MSU came up short on the two-point conversion attempt when Prescott and Ashton Shumpert weren t able to connect in the corner. Prescott was a perfect 6-of-6 on the 82-yard drive. The Bulldogs retained possession with 1:32 left in the game. Prescott again marched MSU down the field from its own 11-yard line. However, Devon Bell s 52-yard field goal sailed wide right as time expired. The Tigers held the Bulldogs to only 43 rushing yards.
