7 Executives Don Smolenski Howie Roseman DON SMOLENSKI President 17th year in Philadelphia Don Smolenski, a longtime leader in the Eagles front office and a veteran sports executive, was named the club s president in June, His promotion capped a steady rise through the executive ranks of the Eagles organization. As president, Smolenski directs the club s business and strategic efforts, including sales, marketing, communications and operations. He is known for his collaborative, easygoing style, financial acumen and long-term view and for playing a key role in significant projects from the construction of Lincoln Financial Field to the club s internationally recognized environmental and philanthropic programs. During his first year as president, Smolenski infused energy throughout the organization with his engaging leadership style. He embarked on a two-year, $125 million revitalization plan to Lincoln Financial Field and aided Eagles chairman Jeffrey Lurie and general manager Howie Roseman on the team s search for a new head coach - a process that landed Oregon head coach Chip Kelly. He also spearheaded a plan that relocated the team s training camp to Philadelphia for the first time since The stadium revitalization plan, like others, was a direct result of his numerous conversations with Eagles fans, an initiative that fuels Smolenski s drive as one of the key stewards of the franchise. Smolenski is also a driving force in the team s environmental initiatives. Through its Go Green! program, the Eagles have emerged as a leader in environmental stewardship. The team has become a green leader in the sports industry through its conservation efforts, recycling programs, and use of renewable energy. In fact, his efforts have made Lincoln Financial Field one of the greenest sports stadium in the world with the installation of solar panels and wind turbines in STADIUM REVITALIZATION ON TAP In February of 2012, the Philadelphia Eagles kicked off a two-year, $125 million project to revitalize Lincoln Financial Field and provide season ticket members and fans with an enhanced gameday experience. Over the past two seasons, LFF has seen several changes and additions made that were direct results of feedback that the team received from its fans. The Eagles teamed up with both Gensler Architecture and Turner Construction to develop and execute a plan for the project that will be completed prior to the start of the 2014 season. We have had discussions with season ticket holders over the past couple of seasons to find out what was important to them. We listened and developed a plan of action. The revitalization is a direct result of those conversations, said Smolenski. Our main goal when we began this project was to dramatically enhance the gameday experience for our fans. They deserve an exciting and fun experience and we are committed to that. HOWIE ROSEMAN General Manager 15th year in Philadelphia Howie Roseman is in his 15th season in Philadelphia and his fifth as the Eagles general manager after being promoted to his current post on January 29, Roseman spent the previous two seasons as the team s vice president of player personnel. Known as one of the most aggressive general managers in the league, Roseman has earned a reputation for seeking any edge he can find to field the best team. Roseman oversees the college and pro scouting departments, the team s medical, equipment, video and player development staffs, while serving as the steward of the salary cap. He played a vital role assisting Eagles chairman Jeffrey Lurie in the team s search for a new head in 2013, which ultimately brought renowned Oregon coach Chip Kelly east to Philadelphia. He s one of the brightest young guys in the league, said Eagles chairman Jeffrey Lurie. I m very excited about what he brings to the table. He has assembled an excellent team around him. He s meticulous in his evaluations. He has great relationships with players, coaches and agents around the league. Over the last couple of years, Roseman has configured what many observers have coined a strong scouting staff with a blend of experienced scouts and a young core of talent. You have to give him a lot of credit for that, because there are a lot of young guys who wouldn t do that, former NFL GM and current Eagles senior football advisor Tom Donahoe said. They d feel threatened by it. They would feel a little bit intimidated by it. But Howie s only interested in getting the best group of scouts that he can. He values our opinion. We don t always agree, but that s part of scouting. ROSEMAN S SCOUTING TEAM Over the last two years, Roseman has revamped the Eagles scouting staff. Here s a breakdown: Tom Gamble... 13 Eagles Youth Partnership WHAT IS EAGLES YOUTH PARTNERSHIP? Eagles Youth Partnership (EYP) was founded in 1995 to leverage the power of a sports team to be a positive force for good. This 501(c) (3) public charity helps to level the playing field for over 50,000 low income children in the Greater Philadelphia region every year with a focus on health and education programming. As a public charity supported by the Eagles, diverse corporations, foundations and individuals, EYP takes its services directly to kids at their schools and in their neighborhoods to improve their odds of success. EYP s mission is to enhance the quality of life for vulnerable children and youth in our region, especially in urban areas that are economically disadvantaged. EYP ensures that children can see, read and have safe places to play and learn. We see young people as resources to be nurtured rather than problems to be solved. And we are in the unique position to leverage the star power of the Philadelphia Eagles football team to bring hope and access to those children that others have been unable to reach. - Sarah Martinez-Helfman, EYP Executive Director WHERE DO THE FUNDS COME FROM? As a 501(c)(3) public charity with a $2 million budget, EYP relies on funds from the public, the Eagles and other generous companies and foundations. The Philadelphia Eagles are EYP s largest funder, covering staff salaries, free office space at the NovaCare Complex and many other resources allowing funds given by corporate, foundation and individual donors to support its community programming. In honor of the 10th anniversary of the Steve Patterson Award for Excellence in Sports Philanthropy, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation presented the Legacy Award to EYP in September EYP, corporate and non-profit partners, and the Eagles Football Club unite to: Capture the attention of young people Improve attitudes about learning and healthy lifestyles Offer educational programs to children in hard-to-reach areas of the city through the star power of the Eagles organization DID YOU KNOW? 14 Go Green Initiative The Eagles believe the path to sustainability is a journey, not a destination, which is why they developed their Go Green initiative in 2003 with the opening of Lincoln Financial Field. What started with a blue bin under each employee s desk has grown into a company-wide sustainability initiative that aims to reduce the team s impact on the environment in a cost-effective manner. With the help of partners and fans, the Eagles have been able to develop a multi-year curriculum and action plan that has incorporated green energy production, recycling, composting, energy conservation, reforestation and much more. The Eagles environmental program operates with the help of inputs and collaborators such as national and international sustainability standards organizations, United States Environmental Protection Agency guidelines, multiple environmental advocacy organizations, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania environmental agencies and sustainability best practices employed by several industries. From the beginning, the journey to becoming an environmentally responsible enterprise has been guided by The Sexton Company, which is widely recognized for its innovative corporate social responsibility and sustainability work. Professional sports teams have a unique platform that allows them to reach large audiences through their words and actions. The Eagles view it as their responsibility to be leaders both on and off the football field. WEARING EAGLES GREEN WITH PRIDE The Eagles Go Green program did not come together overnight. It has been a gradual process that continues to take shape over the years with the help of partners and vendors, as well as other environmentally responsible businesses and sports teams. Every year the Eagles work with their partners to identify ways to improve their operation, both from an environmental and financial perspective. One example of this collaboration occurred when the organization wanted to take its recycling program to the next level. Representatives from the Eagles sat in a room with their recycling partner, dumped a garbage bag from the most recent game out on the table and asked the question, Which of these items cannot be diverted from a landfill? After those items were identified, the Eagles worked with their food vendor to find alternative versions of those items that were both environmentally friendly and cost-effective. A similar approach continues to be taken with every aspect of the organization s operation, helping grow it to what it has become today. Solar panels in the Lincoln Financial Field parking lot HOW ARE THE EAGLES CONTRIBUTING TO A GREENER ENVIRONMENT? Solar & Wind Energy In 2012, the Eagles completed an extensive project with their energy partner, NRG. Lincoln Financial Field now features the largest solar array in the NFL with over 11,000 solar panels, as well as 14 wind turbines that generate clean energy. Altogether, the project produces roughly four megawatts of clean energy annually, which is over 30% of the organization s electrical needs and six times the amount of power needed for all 10 home games. Recycling & Composting Since 2006, the Eagles have steadily increased their recycling percentages from 8% to over 86%. By combining recycling and composting with their energy-from-waste program, the Eagles are now able to divert 100% of their waste from landfills. Even the cooking oil used in the kitchens are recycled and converted to bio-diesel fuel that powers the team s field maintenance vehicles. After each game, all edible, prepared but unsold food is sent to local soup kitchens or shelters. Energy Conservation Over the years, the Eagles have implemented a variety of energy conservation techniques, such as using lower-wattage light bulbs and tying lights and HVAC to automatic sensors and timers. Since Lincoln Financial Field s first full year of operation in 2004, the Eagles have reduced their energy consumption by over 50%. Green Purchasing All cups and flatware used by the team are created from bio-plastics which biodegrade in just 45 days, compared to conventional plastics that take years to disintegrate. Over 90% of the paper products used by the team come from 100% post-consumer recycled materials. Reforestation The Eagles offset the carbon footprint of all team travel through reforestation. The organization participates in yearly tree planting events at the Eagles Forest in Bensalem, PA. Along with volunteers and partners, the Eagles have planted over 4,200 trees since 2008.
