Southern Miss won the first battle between these teams, 93-83, on Jan. 6 in Reed Green Coliseum. Kevin Holland went 8-for-8 from the field, including 7-for-7 from beyond the arc, to tie school records in both. Only Marcus Crowell in 990 versus UL Lafayette (0- for-0) has gone perfect on at least eight tries. Neil Watson also had a 7-for-7 three-point game on March 2, 203 versus ECU. UTSA shot a coliseum opponent-record 44 three-pointers in that contest, making 3 of them. The Roadrunners got within singledigits at the 2:46 mark, its first time doing so in over 0 minutes. The Golden Eagles, however, made 4 of their final 6 free-throw attempts to close the game out. In addition to Holland s 23 points, Cortez Edwards added 20, Dominic Magee had 8 and Tyree Griffin posted 6. The home team has won every head-to-head meeting in the series. Southern Miss last game saw UAB shoot 63 percent (including 5-for-5 on second-half free-throws) to take an win. On Thursday, the Golden Eagles were tied with first-place Middle Tennessee with 7:5 left before falling Before this past four-game homestand, Southern Miss picked up its first C-USA road win of the season with a defeat of Florida Atlantic on Feb. 3. The Golden Eagles led 38-2 at the half, went 8-for-2 on three-pointers and posted 32 free-throw attempts. The Golden Eagles need one more league win to continue the trend of Doc Sadler improving the team s C-USA win total in each season he has been at the helm ( ). The 3 overall victories are the most by a Golden Eagle team since the 202 NCAA Tourney squad, and the Black and Gold have clinched a spot in the C-USA Championships, March 7-0 in Frisco, Texas. With at least four games remaining, Griffin already has 68 assists (sixth-most in single-season history). With 0 more dimes, he will have the most by a Golden Eagle since Dallas Dale s 222 in the season. Griffin is currently No. 2 against C-USA foes for scoring (5.7 ppg), fifth in assists (6.2 apg) and third in steals (2.2 spg). Edwards now has 840 points for his career. He is seeking to become the 37th member of Southern Miss,000-point club, and the first to have played under Sadler. Neil Watson was the most recent addition (,57 points from 20-4). Edwards has five doubledoubles on the year, and nine for his career, while being held to single-digit points just three times on the season. This year s team is averaging 7.2 ppg, the highest of any of Sadler s four years at the school. Southern Miss is also ranked third in C-USA for steals (6.9 per game), and its 200 for the year is not only the most of the Sadler era, but also 8 away from cracking the Top-0 in school history. UTSA has won five of its last six games, including home wins over Marshall and WKU. Despite its backcourt shooting emphasis (league-high 38 three-point attempts in C-USA games), the Roadrunners 40 rebounds per game leads the pack. Southern Miss ranks third and seventh nationally for fewest turnovers per game (9.6) and assist-turnover ratio (.59). Florida State, FIU and ODU have been the only teams so far to edge the Black and Gold in the turnover battle. Southern Miss 23 assists versus Rice were its most against a Division I team since Nov. 27, 2004 versus McNeese State (26). It also had 32 versus Rust on Dec. 3, 207. The Golden Eagles have posted a positive assist-turnover ratio in each of their last nine games. Probable Starters Dominic Magee 2.2 ppg 6.2 rpg RJr. Harvey, La. 4 207-8 SOUTHERN MISS BASKETBALL Last Time Out HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- UAB s hot shooting was too much for Southern Miss to overcome in an defeat on Saturday afternoon in Reed Green Coliseum. You re not gonna win many ballgames giving up 80 or more points, head coach Doc Sadler said. It s a lot like the game on Thursday night. Effort should always be a given, but we didn t make adjustments defensively and need to learn that whether it s the first or second half, if you can t step it up defensively, you will fall short. The Blazers (7-, 8-7 C-USA) outscored Southern Miss in the second half, including a 28-6 run after Southern Miss led 55-50, matching its largest of the day, with 2:06 to play. UAB scored eight points over a :03 span to lead with 7:28 on the clock. You could say we scored some points, but we didn t shoot the ball as well as we have in the past, Sadler said. We got up by five without blocking and defending, and the next thing you know, we are down five. We got to the free-throw line a little bit in the second half when we were struggling, but 3 attempts is still not enough. We need to get in the 20s. Southern Miss (3-5, 6-9 C-USA) led at the break. UAB had a one-point lead early in the half, but consecutive three-pointers by Dominic Magee and Tyree Griffin allowed the Golden Eagles to regain a advantage with 6:34 remaining. D Angelo Richardson s steal led to a Cortez Edwards fadeaway that gave the Golden Eagles a 2-9 lead with 8:7 to play. The 0-0 run kept UAB off the scoreboard for 5:06. Edwards (9 points) and Magee (8) led the offensive charge. UAB shot 68 percent in the second half and 62.5 percent for the game. Southern Miss will spend the next week in Texas, first battling UTSA on Thursday and then UTEP on Saturday. 5 Need to Know Who s Who on that Southern Miss bench? Head coach Doc Sadler is beginning his fourth season in Hattiesburg. He is joined by assistant coaches Steve Shields, Marques Townsend, Clarence Weatherspoon and Director of Operations Omar Thomas. Shields and Sadler became acquaintances through the Texas recruiting circuit in the early-mid 990s. Sadler moved south to Lawrence, Kan., to be the Director of Basketball Operations for the Jayhawks upon leaving the Huskers. Townsend was also a manger/administrative volunteer as the two overlapped for a year and was hired prior to Sadler s second season at Southern Miss. Weatherspoon remained tight with his alma mater following his storied playing career, becoming a season ticket holder and earning recognition at Clarence Weatherspoon Day on Jan. 30, 206 when the Golden Eagles defeated UTSA. He is a recent inductee into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame too and is in his second year on the USM staff. Thomas just completed a 2-year professional basketball career. He played two years at UTEP under Sadler and was instrumental in the team making an NCAA and NIT appearance. Graduate assistant Tyler Schaul and video coordinator Jake Stoffers were both Iowa State student managers when Doc Sadler spent his lone year (203-4) there as an assistant coach with then-head coach (now Chicago Bulls) Fred Hoiberg. Meet the Hoopers! The Southern Miss basketball roster features some impressive basketball family backgrounds. Sophomore Clay Weatherspoon is the son of assistant coach Clarence, widely considered the best player in Southern Miss history. Kevin Holland s father, James, is an assistant coach for the Western Michigan men s basketball team. He led USC Spartanburg (now Upstate) to the 982 NAIA championship and spent the season playing for the Harlem Globetrotters. Holland was also an assistant for Doc Sadler s first UTEP team that won the 2005 WAC title and appeared in March Madness. He has since served on the coaching staffs at San Diego State, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama (where Kevin attended high school). Eddie Davis III s cousin, Diontae Jones, plays basketball at Grambling. Tyree Griffin s brother, Bo McCalebb, was the 2007 Sun Belt Player of the Year at New Orleans and is playing overseas. The Young and the Restless Southern Miss is one of four C-USA teams (out of 4) to have one senior on the squad (D Angelo Richardson). Richardson, a walk-on junior college transfer out of Holmes CC, is a native of Vicksburg and has been a major energy contributor to the club. His first season also saw him hit multiple buzzer-beaters, one each in regulation and the first overtime against Tougaloo in the opener and another long threepointer that defeated FIU and essentially sealed a C-USA Tournament berth. Eddie Davis III and Kevin Holland are both in their fourth years at Southern Miss but still qualify as juniors. Davis had two separate upper and lowerbody injuries that held him to only 3 games his first two seasons, but the redshirt-junior played 30 last season and looks to continue that trajectory. LaDavius Draine is the lone freshman on this year s squad. The All-State shooter out of Calhoun City HS once had 46 points in a first-half as a senior and will play multiple positions for the Golden Eagles this season SOUTHERN MISS BASKETBALL Additional Notes The Golden Eagles have nine scholarship players on this year s roster, and we will be allowed next year as part of the NCAA sanctions that Doc Sadler and his staff inherited for the season. Cortez Edwards collected a career-high 3 rebounds against UTSA on Jan. 5, the most by a Golden Eagle since Michael O Donnell equaled the feat in the 205 opener at Memphis. It was also the first Southern Miss double-double of the year. Edwards on Feb. 9 at UTSA collected eight assists and rebounds, the highest-such combo since Jonathan Mills and Neil Watson each did so in 203. Tim Rowe s five blocks against South Alabama on Nov. 30, 206 marked the most by a Southern Miss individual since Gary Flowers had seven against New Orleans in Southern Miss had 45 free-throw attempts in its opener against SUNO (Nov. 0), its most in a single game since Only seven Golden Eagles played in the Dec. 0 win over Troy, the fewest since seven took the floor against Tulane last Dec. 0, 206 as well. It happened again in the Jan. 6 win over UTSA. Dominic Magee and Cortez Edwards have each posted double-doubles in the Dec. 6 and Jan. 6 wins, something that Southern Miss hadn t seen previously since 20 (Darnell Dodson and Jonathan Mills). Kevin Holland has made five consecutive threepointers three times in his career. He initially tied the school record for percentage with a 5-for-5 mark on Dec. 0, 206 versus Tulane, then made his first five against Youngstown State on Nov. 25, 207 in South Dakota. On Jan. 6, he went 7-for-7 from deep as part of an 8-for-8 day to further cement his legacy. Only Marcus Crowell (0-for-0 versus ULL in 990) has shot perfect from the field on at least eight attempts. The Golden Eagles defeated Rice despite having just 7 rebounds. It was the fewest in a game since having 6 versus Tennessee Tech in 984. The only other instances since then where the team had fewer than 20 were 9 each against Cincinnati in 2005 and UAB on Jan.. It was also the Black and Gold s its first win despite being out-shot since Feb. 6, 207 versus FIU (in overtime). Southern Miss out-rebounded Old Dominion in the Feb. 8 loss, marking the first time it had won that battle since the Dec. 0 win over Troy. D Angelo Richardson, a walk-on, is the lone senior on this year s team. The last Southern Miss squad to have one or no seniors was in Richardson made 23 consecutive free-throws from Jan. 6-Feb. 0, 208, the first time a Golden Eagle made 20 in a row since Kourtlin Jackson at the end of the season. Richardson s final-second three-pointer vs. FIU on Feb. 6, 207 gave Southern Miss a dramatic overtime win that essentially clinched the team s first C-USA Tournament appearance in three years. Southern Miss 32 assists versus Rust were the thirdmost in school history. Two Golden Eagles eligible to play this season are Dominic Magee and Tyree Griffin. Magee was ranked as high as the No. 2 recruit in Louisiana coming out of Helen Cox HS in Harvey. He redshirted his first year at Memphis before playing at 28-8 Grand Canyon last year, even scoring 29 points in his debut. Griffin was a major contributor at Oklahoma State from 204-6, starting 6 games as a sophomore. He even had a career-high 2 assists at Kansas and tallied eight double-figure scoring games. Magee s 6 free-throw attempts against SUNO in the opener were the most by a Golden Eagle since Kourtlin Jackson also had 6 in the 206 finale at Marshall. That s where we re going. I don t care anything about winning a lot of games. I care about one thing. I care about playing in the NCAA tournament. And with that statement, Doc Sadler began his tenure as the 20th head coach in Southern Miss history prior to the season. Despite inherited NCAA sanctions, Sadler has increased the Golden Eagles C-USA win total each year he has been at the helm. Sadler was announced at a press conference on May, 204, bringing over 30 years of coaching experience to Hattiesburg. As a head coach, his teams have posted winning marks in of his 4 years, with seven squads having won at least 20 games. Overall, he owns a in 4 seasons as a college head coach. During his coaching tenure, Sadler has been associated with 6 postseason teams in 23 seasons, including five in 0 years at the Division I level, while helping 9 players reach the National Basketball Association. Sadler and years at Kansas and Iowa State respectively, winning two Big XII titles and advancing to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen both years. While at ISU, Sadler learned under head coach Fred Hoiberg, who plays an NBA style of offense, which Sadler brings to Southern Miss. Sadler spent six years at Nebraska, compiling a 0-89 record and three NIT appearances. Sadler opened his tenure with the Cornhuskers with five straight wins, including his 50th as a Division I coach over nationallyranked Creighton. He went on to guide NU to 7 wins, tying for the third-most victories by a first-year coach in Nebraska history. In , Sadler led his second squad to 20 victories, just the 2th 20-win season in program history and the first since 999, guiding the Huskers to the second round of the NIT. The following year, Nebraska earned an 8-3 record, including an 8-8 record in Big XII play. It was the first.500 conference record by the Huskers in a decade, and ended with their second straight NIT appearance. That year, Nebraska had the best scoring defense in the league at 60.4 points per game, the second-best mark at NU in the last 50 years. The Huskers second straight NIT appearance marked the first time in a decade that Nebraska had played in the postseason in consecutive years. Following a year that saw Sadler put the youngest team in the Big XII on the floor, Sadler led Nebraska to the NIT in 200-, earning a 9-3 record. The Huskers were led by a defense that ranked in the top-20 nationally in both scoring and field goal percentage. The 89 wins in his first five seasons are the most by an NU coach in Nebraska history. Sadler, 55, began his Division I head coach career by spending two seasons leading the program at UTEP, where he helped continue the long-standing tradition of success in Miners basketball. Sadler s UTEP teams boasted 48 victories in his two years as head coach and won 72.7-percent of their games. Including his first season with the Miners as an assistant coach, Sadler helped UTEP to 72 victories over three years, ranking the Miners 20th nationally in victories during that span. The Miners gained three straight postseason appearances with Sadler on the bench. A native of Greenwood, Ark., Sadler made one of the most successful Division I coaching debuts in college basketball history, as his Miners squad ran to an impressive 27-8 record and an NCAA Tournament berth. UTEP won a school-record 4 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) games and its first WAC Tournament title in 5 years to earn the league s automatic bid. The 27 wins were one off the UTEP school record. They also put Sadler in rare territory, as the mark still ranks ninth in NCAA history for victories by a first-year Division I coach. Sadler led UTEP to 2 victories in and an NIT berth, relying on a defense that ranked 5th nationally by allowing only 59.5 points per game. UTEP set a C-USA record by allowing just 56 points per game in conference play in , and also allowed teams to hit just 40.6 percent from the floor on the year, the program s best mark since 974. While solid defense is a staple of his teams, Sadler understands the need to put creative scorers in a position to flourish. That was especially noticeable in his first UTEP team, as the 2005 Miners set the school record for points scored (2,66, 74.7 ppg), assists (579) and free throw percentage (.792). Sadler helped two players, Omar Thomas and Filberto Rivera, earn first-team All-WAC honors in 2005, the
7 first time UTEP had a pair of players on the first team in 20 years. Thomas also earned MVP honors after an outstanding performance at the league tournament. A year later, John Tofi, one of two,000-point scorers on the squad, was the third Miner to earn a first-team all-league certificate under Sadler. Before taking over as head coach, Sadler was an assistant at UTEP under then-head coach Billy Gillispie in when the Miners made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in more than a decade. Under Gillispie and Sadler, UTEP tied the biggest turnaround in NCAA history that season as it went from six wins the previous year to 24 wins in Sadler s first season assisting the Miners. Sadler honed his coaching skills in his native state, as he served as a head coach in the junior college ranks for five years at Arkansas-Fort Smith from 999 to His success as a head coach began there, as he posted a record at Fort Smith. Sadler served two stints as an assistant coach at Arkansas-Fort Smith, first in and then again during the season. He took over as head coach and athletic director in 998 and served in that capacity until 2003 when he left to join Gillispie at UTEP. Sadler s teams won the Bi-State East Conference title each of his last four years at Arkansas-Fort Smith. The 200 and 2002 NJCAA Region II Coach of the Year, Sadler led the Lions to the region title and an appearance in the NJCAA Tournament while winning 30 games each of those seasons. Off the court, his teams had a 95-percent graduation rate during his tenure and every sophomore over his last two seasons at UAFS was awarded a scholarship to a four-year institution, including eight Division I scholarships. Honing his administrative and fundraising skills, Sadler oversaw a department that posted a 72.4 winning percentage across all sports under his guidance while he also spearheaded efforts to build a new basketball arena for the university SOUTHERN MISS BASKETBALL Over 4 full seasons as a Division I assistant coach, of his teams reached the postseason, including ASU s 996 team that reached the Sweet 6 of the NCAA Tournament. At Texas Tech, Sadler helped the Red Raiders to the 993 Southwest Conference title and an NCAA appearance. He recruited talent that helped the Red Raiders to a 28- record and a Sweet 6 appearance in 996. The energetic Sadler also served one season as a high school coach, guiding County Line High School to a 38-7 record. Sadler, who was a four-year student manager for the Arkansas Razorbacks under Coach Eddie Sutton, earned his bachelor s degree in physical education in 982 before beginning his collegiate coaching career with Sutton at Arkansas. Sadler added a masters of science degree in education from Northeastern State in 99. Sadler and his wife, Tonya, who is also a native of Greenwood, Ark., have two sons, Landon and Matthew. Head Coach Doc Sadler What others are saying about Sadler This is not a home run, this is a grand slam hire. I have coached against his teams for 20 years and his teams play tough and are extremely difficulty to guard. He will do great at Southern Miss. John Calipari, Kentucky Head Coach Doc Sadler is a great fit for Southern Miss Basketball. His teams have won a lot of games with grit and toughness and it will be no different in Hattiesburg. Golden Eagle fans will embrace him because he wasn t born with a silver coaching spoon in his mouth. He s earned his success. Fran Fraschilla, ESPN College Basketball Analyst I couldn t be happier for Doc, but we will miss him greatly here at Iowa State. Much of our success this past year was because of Doc s influence on our team. Southern Miss is getting an excellent basketball coach and an even better person who will do special things for the program. Fred Hoiberg, Iowa State Head Coach I ve known Doc for almost 30 years. He s a really good guy that can flat out coach and recruit. Players want to play for him. I m so excited for Doc but also very happy for the Southern Miss community. Bill Self, Kansas Head Coach Considered by many to be a tremendous tactician and strategist, Sadler is equally as impressive on the recruiting paths. Sadler has signed eight players who have gone on to play in the NBA, including Michael Batiste, Tony Battie, Cory Carr, Mark Davis, Darvin Ham, Eddie House, Maurice Jeffers and Jason Sasser. Sadler has also coached other players who reached the NBA -- Greg Anderson, Mario Bennett, Randy Brown, Isaac Burton, Byron Irvin, Joe Klein, Andrew Lang, Ron Riley, Alvin Robertson, Darrell Walker and Rickie Winslow. Overall, Sadler s total is an impressive 9 former pupils who reached the highest level of professional basketball. As an assistant coach, Sadler served stints at nine current Division I schools, including Arkansas (982-85, under Coach Eddie Sutton), Lamar (985-86, under Coach Pat Foster), Houston (986), Chicago State (987-88, under Coach Tommy Suitts), Texas Tech (99-94, under Coach James Dickey), Arizona State (994-97, under Coach Bill Freider), UTEP ( , under Coach Billy Gillispie), Kansas (202-3 under Coach Bill Self) and Iowa State (203-4 under Coach Fred Hoiberg).
