The Rams earned a win over the Minutemen on Jan. 24 at the Ryan Center, in a game with similar implications atop the A-10. UMass leads the all-time series between the two schools, The Minutemen are URI s third-most common opponent, having met on the hardwood 127 previous times. Over the last 11 meetings between the two schools, dating back to the season, URI holds a narrow 6-5 lead in those games. scouting the minutemen In his second season at Massachusetts, head coach Travis Ford s squad has posted a 16-6 overall record, including a 6-2 mark in Atlantic 10 play. Last time out, UMass earned a win at home over Richmond. Four Minutemen average double-figures in scoring, led by Rashaun Freeman s 17.0 points per game. He leads the A-10 in field goal percentage (.632) and is third in rebounding (8.6 rpg). Stephane Lasme is averaging 12.9 points and an A-10 best 9.7 rebounds per contest. James Life (12.8) and Gary Forbes (12.3) are the other double-figure scorers for UMass. The Minutemen are 7-2 overall and 4-0 in league play at the Mullins Center this season. Rhode island in the atlantic 10 Since its inaugural season in the conference during the season, Rhode Island has posted a (.442) all-time record in Atlantic 10 play. The Rams are 7-2 in conference play so far this season, picking up a win at Fordham on Feb. 3. Last season, the Rams were 8-8 overall in league play. Head coach Jim Baron - the only coach in conference history to win Coach of the Year honors at two different schools (St. Bonaventure, 1995; Rhode Island, 2003) has posted an all-time A-10 mark of (.418). Baron has compiled a (.456) mark in league games while at the helm of URI. The Jan. 24 win over UMass in Kingston gave the Rams sole possession of first place in the league, while the Jan. 27 loss at home to George Washington knocked the Rams out of the top spot in favor of the Colonials. The win at Fordham last time out put URI back in the top spot - marking the first time since the season that Rhody had been in sole possession of first place in the conference in the month of February. baron in select company Sophomore Jimmy Baron is the only player in the country to rank among the top 15 on two national statistical lists: free throw percentage and three-point percentage. Baron is connecting on 90.3% (56-62) from the charity stripe, while shooting 50.4% from beyond the arc (70-139). low scoring affair Rhode Island tallied a season-low in points in a win at Fordham on Feb. 3. The junior, who has assumed the point guard role since early December, is averaging 9.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists, while shooting 48.2% (27-56) from the floor and 83.3% from the charity stripe (15-18). He is also posting a 2.3:1 assist-to-turnover ratio in just under 30 minutes of action per game during the span. hot on the inside, cold on the outside While the Rams struggled from the outside - 8-for-25, 32.0% - against George Washington on Jan. 27, they were quite efficient inside the arc. URI connected on 19-of-28 shots from two-point land, good for 67.9%. Rhode Island is averaging 22.0 points off the bench so far this season. daniels in shooting, not scoring slump Junior Will Daniels in the midst of a shooting slump, but it has not affected his scoring. Entering the Jan. 7 game at home versus Dayton, Daniels was connecting on 54.5% of his attempts from the field (78-143), including 28- of-53 from the perimeter (52.8%). Since then, over the last eight games, the fifth-ranked scorer in the Atlantic 10 is shooting just 37.3% from the field (31-83) and 24.0% from beyond the arc (6-25). On Jan. 13, the Rams snapped a seven-game losing streak at Hawk Hill, downing SJU, The following weekend, Rhody traveled back to the City of Brotherly Love, and snapped a six-game slide at Temple s Liacouras Center, besting the Owls, brought to you by the number 50 and the letter W In the 10 games this season in which Rhode Island has shot 50% or better from the floor, the Rams are 9-1. On Jan. 27, the Rams dropped their first game when shooting better than 50%, falling to George Washington (50.9%). On Jan. 17, Rhody shot a season-best 54.8% against St. Bonaventure. But reserve forward shook off his shooting slump, connecting on 4-of-7 from three-point land, including a key trey with 48 seconds left, which brought Rhody within one point and set up the final, gamewinning play. career night for daniels vs. la salle Junior forward Will Daniels poured in a career-high 26 points in a victory over La Salle on Jan. 3. He was 10-of-18 from the floor, including 1-of-4 from the perimeter. He also connected on 5-of-5 from the charity stripe, to go along with six boards and three assists in 35 minutes of action. Daniels scored 10 straight points during a key second half stretch. klepto keith Freshman Keith Cothran tied a Rhode Island single-game record with seven steals at Ohio on Dec. 27. He joined five others who also notched seven swipes in a singlegame - the last URI player to do it was Dawan Robinson vs. Pittsburgh on Dec. 21, He leads the squad in steals with 28 - in just 14 games - good for 2.0 spg. maybe there s something to that beware of the phog thing... Entering the Dec. 30 game against Kansas, Jimmy Baron had connected on 51 consecutive free throws and had not unintentionally missed from the charity stripe. He was 0-2 from the line at Allen Fieldhouse and since then has shot just 28-of-32 from the line (87.5%), dropping his season average to 90.3% (56-for-62) and his career average to 92.2% (83-90). from way downtown, (m)bang... Junior forward Joe Mbang connected on a season-best four three-pointers against Boston University on Dec. 22. The 6-6 reserve led the Rams in scoring vs. BU, tallying 14 points in 20 minutes of action. Mbang ranks third on URI in three-point FG made (32). the silver lining to the ohio game Several of the Rams freshmen saw significant action versus Ohio on Dec. 27. Keith Cothran scored a career-high 12 points, while also tallying a school-record seven 4

5 steals. Lamonte Ulmer blocked a career-best three shots, while Jonathan Cruz tied his season-high with five points. Junior Jamael Lynch tallied his first two field goals in a Rhode Island uniform, finishing with four points. EIGHT IS great and three is the MAGIC NUMBER Sophomore Jimmy Baron connected on eight three-point field goals, en route to scoring a career-high 28 points, versus Brown on Dec. 5. Baron was 8-for-9 from the perimeter - tied him for URI s second-best single-game long-distance shooting percentage.
