This is the 23rd all-time meeting between North Texas and UTSA. The Mean Green leads the series 14-8, however the Miners won the first meeting on January 4 in San Antonio. In that game, Candice Adams led off the game with a three-pointer on the Mean Green s first possession, but that would be the team s only lead in the game. Briesha Wynn led North Texas with 13 points and four of her teammates contributed six points apiece in a losing effort at the Convocation Center. Vonnie Ballgame... As the clock ticks down on Joh Vonna Darrington s time in a North Texas jersey, she is playing some of the best basketball of her career. Over her last six games, Darrington is averaging 6.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, while averaging 21.3 minutes. On Senior Night against UTEP, she scored a career-high 12 points and grabbed nine boards, only one rebound shy of her first-career double-double. Although she is only shooting from the field over that span, she has gone from the foul line. Nifty Sixty Points... When the Mean Green lost to UTEP on Senior Night, it was the first time all season the team scored 60 points and lost. Previously, North Texas was 3-0 with wins over UMKC, Florida Atlantic and FIU. On the other hand, the Mean Green is now 2-21 when allowing 50 or more points in a game and 3-2 otherwise. Adams Assassin... Over the course of the season, Candice Adams has been the most consistent threepoint threat for North Texas. She is (31.1-percent) on the season, including (33.3-percent) in Conference USA play. She has made two or more treys in 10 games, while the rest of the team has 12 such games combined. Adams is also the best foul shooter on the team, going (75-percent) from the line so far this season. Last Game Recap DENTON The ice from an overnight freezing rain might have melted in the afternoon, but there sure was rain in the Super Pit on Thursday evening. UTEP came into town and dropped 11 three-pointers on the North Texas women s basketball team, and the Miners defeated the Mean Green on Senior Night, It was two closely-matched teams but they made a couple more shots, head coach Mike Petersen said. They made 11 threes and a lot of those were when we were squared up on them. Six of those threes were right over us when we didn t get our hands up quickly enough. Guard Candice Adams had all three North Texas three-pointers in the game and tied a season-high with 15 points on 5-12 shooting. It was the third time in the sophomore s career that she had three treys in a game, which is a career-high. Four other Mean Green players scored in double-figures, marking the first time since December 5, 2005 in a win against SMU that five teammates each scored 10 or more points. Although there was an eight-point spread at the final buzzer, it was the closest game of the season for North Texas, as there were 10 ties and 19 lead changes over the 40 minutes. The final lead change came with 3:09 remaining, when UTEP s Cameasha Turner hit the team s 10th three-pointer of the game to make the score in favor of the Miners. We led for over half the game, but at the end of the day they made some big shots when they needed to, Petersen said. To win games like these you have to make plays, and credit to them for making plays. The junior guard scored 15 points, all in the second half, after sitting out most of the first half in foul trouble. Senior Stacie Telles and freshman Lulu McKinney tied for the UTEP scoring lead with 16 points apiece. Between those three guards came nine of the Miners 11 three-pointers.

Since being introduced as the seventh coach in North Texas women s basketball history on April 16, 2012, Petersen has changed the perception of North Texas women s basketball into that of a contender. Prior to arriving at North Texas, Petersen was the head coach at Wake Forest from and is the school s all-time winningest coach. He is a coaching veteran with over 30 years of experience, including three seasons as the head coach at TCU. Petersen guided Wake Forest to unprecedented heights in leading the Demon Deacons to the postseason in three of the past four seasons and winning 72 games, which is the best stretch in Wake Forest women s basketball history. He has also been a head coach at Gonzaga ( ), New Mexico State ( ), and TCU ( ). Petersen also spent five seasons with the Minnesota men s basketball team ( ), serving as associate head coach for four seasons. Prior to taking over at TCU, Petersen was the women s head coach at New Mexico State University from In his four seasons with the Aggies, Petersen recorded three consecutive 20-win seasons and compiled an (.681) overall record and a (.736) record in Big West Conference games. Petersen began his head coaching career in 1985 when he accepted the head women s coaching position at Gonzaga University. During his first season, Petersen led the Zags to a record and missed the NAIA National Tournament by a game. After an record in their transition year into NCAA Division I, Gonzaga captured the West Coast Conference title in its inaugural season and only their second year at the Division I level. He won 65 games in four seasons at Gonzaga.
